    haha Chris how cool is that, your teacher bringing in a preserved baby crocodile head! It fascinating to read and see what you are doing. My favourites are the last one and the last one on the first page top row, reminds me a bit of a pineapple, but I like the shape and the scales. Very cool stuff.

    PxlSlayer Thanks! It is pretty fun to do when you get a chance. simple variations, y'know...

    hard surface->hard surface
    organic->organic
    organic->hard surface
    hard surface->organic

    all of those should work. i just don't have enough time to do them all right away. something to come back to after the class though!

    MarianRowling Thanks Marian! these are a lot of fun to do.

    Great concepts and really nice lines.
    I like how you can make levels of depth so clever using shadows like you did on those sketches with the trees behind the men.
    You have quite a fantasy man.
    Cheers!

    this is another approach we're learning in class. basically, you start with verbs or action words--run, jump, smash, bend, fold, etc. then you start drawing abstract form/function/motion representations of those actions.

    here's a sample list of verbs and a couple of abstract representation diagrams
    Name:  Week6_ClassNotes_01.jpg
Views: 1401
Size:  286.0 KB

    then, i chose the verb "cut" and tried to list all the different sub-verbs or subtypes of cutting i could think of.
    Name:  Week6_ClassNotes_02.jpg
Views: 1317
Size:  253.7 KB

    there are different ways you can apply these representations, you can have some part of a mech which moves in a "cutting" motion, you can have a tool or prop that actually functions as a cutting implement, or you can have an object that is composed of forms that show an abstract "cutting" relationship. anyway, i picked the third way and in the back of my mind, i thought i would do architecture or environments based on "cutting"

    here are some of my abstracts:
    Name:  Week6_Abstract_01.jpg
Views: 1308
Size:  191.9 KB
    Name:  Week6_Abstract_02.jpg
Views: 1312
Size:  199.2 KB

Views: 1304
Size:  223.4 KB

Views: 1292
Size:  203.8 KB
    Name:  Week6_Abstract_05.jpg
Views: 1290
Size:  141.9 KB

    this is a quick rough design based on one of those abstract form studies.
    Name:  Week6_design_01.jpg
Views: 1292
Size:  135.4 KB

    i'm not sure, but i think this approach is very similar to what product designers use. make a shoe that says "jump", etc. you can imagine some marketing director telling a designer to envision concepts based on these action words. anyway, i like this approach a lot. not good at it yet, but i can tell it has a lot of possibilities for unique designs that i ordinarily wouldn't think of. i don't know, but maybe it will work for you in some way.

    don't have time to write more at the moment, but

    THANKS! Obstfelfer, Axelga, MacTire, knut-, VelocityKendall, NickyBeats, and the rest of you

    phatbuddha FUSHANDCHUPS--Thanks! It was a fun assignment to do. nice to break out the graphite for a change.

    Sickbrush--hey dude! life is busy as hell and full of a lot of ups and downs lately. wish i could say more but i can't post it online. i have been getting more opportunities to sculpt digitally at work, so i'm boning up on my Zbrush and modo chops. between that and classwork, i haven't been getting much time to mellow out. probably going to take the next term off from classes just to start finishing up all the personal artwork and concepts.
