It's a successful study in that I immediately saw Sargent's personality in your piece... and I'm not familiar with the original. Immediately the thought was "Sargent"... so you captured something elusive there.

haven't done this for a bunch of months now. went life drawing with the gray sketchbook. just so you know, canson is selling the 9x12's again. but they're kind of expensive...like 30 bucks each. i ordered another 5. gonna have a lot of drawing to do.

p_sage--thanks! i'm still getting used to the watercolor, but i'll get it one of these days. you can almost tell sargent's work just from the composition and massing of darks.

What are those gray canson sketchbooks called? All I can find are sketchbooks with different colors called "mi-teintes" by Canson. I really want one instead of buying paper by paper.

Plus, amazing rendering on that gray paper. I wish I could achieve that look.

i've only found 9x12... they're expensive too. not sure which shade of gray it is. it changed from dark to light a few years ago.

WOW! Nathan's demo is freaking brilliant !! He sure knows what he's doing.

I am surprised that the demo was in acrylic though, for a water-based portrait class. He didn't want to have to use a blow-dryer every 2 minutes maybe (?)

might have to take these down soon. these are presentation drawings for my friend Matt from my engineering days. he has invented a kind of motorized skateboard that moves like a "freebord" and is controlled like one of those Segway scooters. He's exhibiting at an entrepreneur conference at Stanford. these are just some pitch drawings--eye candy for his booth.







tony00--yeah, nathan is always brilliant. i'm glad to be taking his class again, but the timing couldn't be worse. i don't have adequate time to commit to the homework with all this freelance and side project stuff going on. but i don't know when he's going to get around to offering this one again, so i felt like i had to take it.

using acrylic like this is way easier for me than watercolor. nathan does have a way of working that's very loose and watercolor-ish, but the advantage is just that you can paint over it without disturbing the paint underneath. in watercolor and white gouache, you have a very limited number of passes before you can't paint over it any more. like maybe 2-3 layers at the most.

One thing I like about Nathan's acrylic sketches is the palette. The shapes and energy are amazing of course, but he has very variety/harmony going on I think, and great skin colours..

I've been doing a lot of smaller stuff with sort of Zorn palette, but experimenting with broadening things a bit again. Would love to know his palette if you know it?..

shit, i'm sick again. can't post anything right now. just gotta make it thru the work day. all i can say is more marvel and star wars stuff. some comicon exclusive designs, and now action figure proposals for a major motion picture that hasn't been released yet. lots o' work. trying to keep up with homework for nathan's class is kicking my ass.

I use a water bin, an old listerine bottle to carry water in, masking tape, Winsor and Newton watercolors, white gouache, brushes; mostly Princeton (Princeton 1” flat #4350st) and Robert Simmons white sable (#721 flat, sizes 1/2” and 1/4”), sketchbooks and a small hiking pack they all fit in. The sketchbooks are heavy weight, acid free craft paper made by Canson (can be found as a scrapbook in the photo album section of art and stationary stores, product # 541-2022).
The studies are done small and quickly. Most are less than 3x5" and completed in 40 minutes or less.

I've glanced through the first page and liked what i've seen so far. How long have you been drawing? How do you render Mass, and how do you 'see'? Your work seems to have a very 'cast drawing' quality to it, have you drawn lots of those in your time? I'm working on a bargue drawing at the moment which will push me when I get round to rendering the values on it. The eyes on page one are brilliant. I'll definitely be coming back to this sketchbook to see more.

beginning of an oil study after jacob collins for nathan fowkes' class



MasonJames i've been drawing my whole life but kinda took a break for college (engineering). i started drawing mostly in line until very late in life--maybe age 27 or so. not sure how i see 'mass' per se; i mostly look for volume and look for the rhythms and overlaps that show it the most clearly. after that, i try to design my shapes and use a kind of "calligraphic" line that comes and goes for the core shadows, etc.

i've done maybe a handful of cast drawings in my entire life. i know it's popular as a learning method and a lot of the new realist schools encourage it. it is useful, depending on where you're at, and i did a couple to try to apply for grad school before i decided against it. i don't like the atelier method of sight-sizing it though. maybe it's useful for improving your eye for proportions, but it kills your rhythm unless you learn to transcend that method, and that's mostly why i say i'm kind of against it.

some of how i think comes from sculpting. i tend to have a decent eye for value, but i also tend to be pretty timid with color. trying to slowly break out of that habit and loosen up color-wise.
