if you speak Japanese, please help us translate this user manual for crisis mapping software that will be used to collect and manage data in Japan. (this was sent to me by my former roommate, a doctor and professor at Harvard who has previously volunteered in Haiti, etc.)

    http://blog.ushahidi.com/index.php/2011/03/16/crisis-mapping-japans-earthquake-and-how-you-can-help/

it's google documents that you can translate by paragraph.

I took yesterday off from work to help translate the instruction manual for this software being used by crisis management volunteers in japan. the collaboration via google documents was f'ing amazing! so fast! a rough version of the software is up and running:

please keep the people in japan in your thoughts. if you can find a way to help out, do it!

    昨日、仕事を休むことにして、この緊急情報ソフトの一部を日本語に訳した。被災地の管理者たちに役立つよう に願っています。

this was released to the public, so now i can post it...

the sculpt is by J. Jung at Gentle Giant (he's an excellent sculptor, by the way, and i don't know who painted it, but the paint department here is pretty awesome as well), and the designs were by me. this was my first or second minibust assignment, so it took a bit of getting used to. i think these 4 were drawn and painted in about a day and a half or so after thumbnailing a bunch.

i've done a bunch more since then--mostly marvel and star wars stuff, and i've changed my workflow and materials too. besides the minibusts, there have been a lot of miscellaneous assignments for all kinds of other clients. can't post that stuff though.

Really nice! I can totally tell it's Mark, well done!

Chris, is the structure of the painting class similar to the head drawing with Nathan? You took the head drawing class as well, where he basically focuses on the reilly construction, then the light, the shadow, the full range and then he finishes with composition.
Does he skip these to jump into monochromatic painting or does he also talk about construction and things like that? How about technique? In the drawing class, Nathan emphasizes principles instead of technique, maybe it's different in the painting class

    Thanks!

    CCSEARS SIGHTING!

Been busy keeping the traditional craft alive I see!
"Everything must serve the idea. The means used to convey the idea should be the simplest and clear. Just what is required. No extra images. To me this is a universal principle of art. Saying as much as possible with a minimum of means."

    anyway... you get the idea.

these were all done for a biotech company's annual report. the marketing firm wanted them done in a certain style because these drawings would be superimposed on a background so that it looked like they were drawn in a lab notebook.

it was a lot of work, but i learned a lot. these are just about maybe half the drawings.

so a big thank you to Mr. C at the 405 Group. he found me here on CA.org, so that should let you guys know that all kinds of freelance jobs are floating around out there. do good work and put it up on the forums!

okay... now i have to get back to work for another client

it's 10pm and i'm still at work on a friday night doing this watercolor study after sargent. trying to figure out nathan's technique for this stuff. when it switches to color my technique might change, but for now i think i'm treating it like charcoal on toned paper--try not to mix the black and white together or it will turn so cold that it will overpower the value study. i have a couple of messed up examples where i screwed that up. it's tricky. but if you try this with black or brown watercolor and white gouache and you want to keep them semi-transparent--do not mix them together without a good reason.

celb--Thanks! Nathan's a great teacher and he deserves a ton of exposure for his work.

VictorB--Thanks man. Super busy. some good projects coming up, i hope.

    krenx--thanks!

bebbo--i'll try. too busy to resize them all tonight.

    MaFeng--Thanks@

    Teundeboer Thanks Teun!

    DeadlyHazard--thanks!

OmenSpirits--thanks! yeah, i'm trying to keep it going on all fronts.

    lemming-clone-Thanks!

    asatira--thanks!

nickybeats--i was just a civilian engineer for the USAF and then for Boeing Directed Energy Systems. I worked on the Airborne Laser Program (you can wikipedia "YAL-1A") to find it.

tony00--hey tony, the class is mostly the same as nathan's oil painting class. at least, the syllabus is mostly the same. he has a strong aversion to teaching technique. i understand why, and if my patience and perseverance works out, i guess i can manage. there are some peculiar difficulties to switching to watercolor all of a sudden. although nathan says he thinks of it the same way he uses oil or acrylic, that's not 100% accurate.
