Praise; The illustration kicks ass! And a question; you said before that working from a photo would've been easier when doing the sculpture, why? I mean isn't it easier to create something like a sculpture from something that's actually 3d rather than 2d like a photo?

Bet the answer is an obvious one.. i'm such an art noob, oh well.

I spent a few minutes looking back for where i said that but couldn't find it right now. (i'm tired and lazy tonight) anyway, i can only think of a few things to say about that...

i remeber i was mildly annoyed that they signed so many people up in the class i'm taking. i don't mind beginners, i don't mind new people, i like sharing what i know and seeing new approaches to things... BUT, i hate having to fight for space or a clear view of the model. And i really hate it when the person sculpting on the other side of the model shines the spotlight in my eyes so they can better see what they want while they blind me. when i signed up at the last minute (literally 2-3 days before the class started), they told me i was the 6th person to sign up and that they had been worried about canceling the class because there weren't enough people. when i showed up the first day...10-12 people. so many people that they didn't have enough modeling stands in working condition. (not to mention they still don't have enough shelf space to store sculptures between classes...)

(if you're going to sign up more people than you have stands to accomodate them, what the fuck are you thinking?)

in almost every sculpture class/group i've ever been to, it's customary to turn the model stand every 10 minutes or so...or to have everybody move their modeling stands around the model. first of all, it helps you work well and build up all sides of your model at the same time. secondly, it gives everybody equal access to the "good stuff i.e. the face and profile. in this class i'm currently taking, the instructor wants us to spend 90% of the first 2-3 weeks working from the profile and building out laterally. when there's 10-12 people in the class with modeling stands and clay and whatnot--there's just no fucking room. furthermore, there's no real discipline about it; nobody stays in their spot and we all just move around as we please.

so, if that's the case, yeah... i'd be better off saving my 500$ and working from photographs of my friends.

as far as actually sculpting from photographs goes... it just means you need to take the right photographs and have enough experience, knowledge, and judgment to fill in the blanks. even when you're working from the live model, you rarely work from every possible angle. rather, you work from angles where you can see the most information about the forms you're concentrating on. if you take the right amount of good photographs, you can figure most of it out.

as far as life vs. reference photos go. neither is really any easier than the other. (maybe when you're painting, photos are easier since the values and scale are closer to what you're actually painting.) but there is a certain "magic" to working from life, i don't deny that. since i can't afford it so much right now, it's almost a luxury. it opens up certain psychological things. at the same time, however, you can also see those same things in well-taken photographs. it's all just a matter of sensitivity, perception, imagination and understanding.

anyway... this is turning into another sears-rant, so i'll quit here before i say anything really really stupid.

i figured i might as well post it. here's what i submitted to spectrum a month or so ago. again, thanks to everybody for their support over the course of this thread. this one is dedicated to you guys.

as luck would have it, someone decided to troll my work on another picture-hosting site... this person was an older lady, graduate of the art institute of chicago back in (i'm guessing) the 1970's. she accused me of "trying too hard" of "being naive" and, get this, of carrying on traditions taught in 8th grade art class. also had the nerve to accuse me of using a light box on the recent airbrush sketches i've been doing. (that paper is way too thick, by the way).

anyway... what a fucking bitch! all this from a lady who posts giant signs like "friendly reminder: liberal men are scum sucking lying pussies"

of course, i never learn my lesson and trolled the troll. i struck the first blow...that much is true. but after seeing that message and the pride she placed in her art education... well, you know my temper with shit like that. stuck up *&^@#*^#@!

breathe deeply, sears. count to 10. don't feed the trolls.

anyway, something good might be in the works for me yet. it's unconfirmed right now, but i just might have an informal meeting with someone high up in the music industry. really excited about it since it might open the doors for doing more traditional work, album art, etc. but there are no guarantees and i'm knocking on wood as i type this. if i don't post for a few days, it's because i'm photoshopping my portfolio together again.

acrylics (both with the airbrush and normal brushes) and colored pencil on gessoed illustration board. same technique butkus and struzan used on the 80's-90's movie posters, but maybe a slightly different way of applying it.

the recent color sketches i was doing are just a quick shortcut way of sketching with them.

The mermaid is truly outstanding. I haven't seen any airbrush work in probably ten years, and tended to think of it as a dying art. Major props to all the time and dedication you've put into learning these techniques.

The mermaid turned out beautiful. I love it. The colors are wonderful.

It sucks to hear about all the trouble in your sculpting class. I can see how that would be really, really annoying. Regardless, your sculpture is turning out really good.

And about the woman, just keep holding your head up. It's always annoying to run into those people, but you kind of have to feel sorry for them. They can't see past themselves to realize the beauty and wonderful experiences they are missing out on.

Only have the time to run by and say hello this time. The leaning house thing looks just dandy, dude. It's got a nice bending perspective to it, which I really enjoy. Oh yeah! I also like how I'm able to see light hit your sculpted forms the same way I see light hit real faces... just recgonizing the planes adds to the sort of instant "yes, this is a good sculpture" factor for me.

I do all of my media hosting on mediafire.com these days. No major restrictions. You don't even need a profile if you don't want to sign up. You can just throw something up and they give you a URL. Having an account is worth the two seconds it takes to register though. Great organization tools and a nice presentation.
