screw it. i'll put up the rest of the pages. here are pages 31-36. 31 is a study after max turner. i've met max, he's a great guy. draws a lot like nicolai fechin. beautiful charcoal work that i'm adapting here to pen.

32-36 are studies after joseph clement coll, a very famous pen and ink illustrator from the late 1800's and early 1900's. his work tends to be pretty dark, and maybe even overworked, but his light/dark patterns and shapes are good.

i'm also a fan of franklin booth--check him out as well.

here's my best attempt at keeping these in order:

--foliage study based on "On Drawing Trees and Nature" an excellent book for drawing foliage, rocks, and landscapes. cheap from Dover Publishing too.
--feature studies after Vanderpoel's anatomy book, also cheap from Dover.

some pages from a sketchbook i was keeping while taking an environment design class at gnomon school of vfx in hollywood.

nice sketches, are you doing that free or do are you using photos ?

the eye and face stuff was done with reference--i can't draw celebrities from memory. most of the eyes were done from "hollywood glamor portraits of the 50's." the skulls were done from life. some of the other stuff were studies after artists i like--max turner, joseph clement coll, etc. some were done from anatomy books--vanderpoel.

this stuff at the bottom here (the environments) was done from life, markers, ballpoint and some white watercolor paint.

here are ballpoint pen studies i did from life. poses were usually 5 min, some went as long as 15-20. these are all from the same 4-hour session in los angeles.

Interesting excersize topics you got there. The hatching looks solid and great model drawings.

you've got masterful hatching technique. i'd love to see some of your imagination stuff but you've definitely got a beautiful style and great linework.

if i may ask. could you msg me the name of the brush pen you used for those 2 drawings in post #7. i've been looking for a pen that can create those kinds of lines for so long.

Thanks, you guys. i'll be putting up the imaginative stuff soon. i've got a lot of work from the past few years.

ped454--the brush pen was probably just a sakura pigmabrush--kind of like the pigmaliner pens with a brush tip. another place to look for them is in any japanese bookstore or stationery store. they use them for small calligraphy on cards and letters. (i've studied japanese for 10+ years, so i know where to look at those stores) try some of the major online retailers. i'm pretty sure dickblick.com has them

jeff lebowski/gspot--those were mostly marker that bled. just a little of doc martens "pro white" opaque watercolor to make a "pop" on a few of them. marker bleeds on moleskine notebooks, so i don't like doing that too often.

the imagination stuff is coming, i promise. i'm just posting this study stuff to get it out of my system.

i need to set this up....

suffice it to say that i had a lot of school loans to pay off--it's a very long and complicated story. my "day" (and sometimes night) job is working for Boeing Directed Energy Systems on the Airborne Laser Program. In case you're wondering what that is, it's been on the cover of Popular Science; it's a missile defense program where we put a megawatt-class IR laser on a 747 and shoot down missiles in flight. crazy, sci-fi, gee-whiz stuff.

but work can be a drag...

so i took five days off of work to teach myself painter ix. to do that, i just gave myself the assignment of "storyboarding" some things i've seen at work. of course, stuff at work is all done in the infrared where you can't see it, so i've used some creative license here and worked without any photographic reference. i just popped ryan church's intro to corel painter dvd and started messing around...

so... for never having done any digital painting before this, i think it turned out okay for two days of spinning my wheels and 3 days of painting. but i think i still need to figure out a better workflow--what to draw and scan first, and what to save for painter or photoshop manipulation.

i'm traditionally trained on "analog" media. like most people here, i've drawn all of my life, but in the past five years, i've been lucky to study under some of the best instructors and entertainment artists in los angeles--people who've taught some of the big names on the conceptart.org front page from los angeles, art center, etc. before they became big names, and people who've done hall of fame worthy illustration. it's been both intimidating and inspiring. some of these artists have kept american illustration alive on the west coast through the 1970's and 1980's, they are directly responsible for at least half the resurgence in "classical" fine art painting, and some can trace their painting instruction back to frank j. reilly, to n.c. wyeth, etc.

you can't help but feel both humble and hopeful when you're around people like that. just to know that great work is possible makes me really happy.

i took a class somewhere in la called "production design ii" it was split up into character, creature, and environment design topics.

the first image is some random stuff for a creature assignment. the second is some abstract compositional studies, roughly postage stamp size, drawn with the intention of generating ideas for environments. black ballpoint in a moleskine sketchbook as usual...
