Background
In the Spartan Camp we also do studies that don't always directly relate to figure drawing. Still, they can turn out to be very useful in some cases. Time to practise some basics!

Exercise
We're going to do some basic shadow construction drawings. Start with a number of geometrical shapes or objects, create a light source, and try to draw the projection of these objects' shadows. You can then try more complex shapes (or figures!). The first reference link below leads to a previous mentorship program here on CA. Be sure to give that one a look.

Reference
Here's a start. Currently looking for more sources:
Exercise
You should take a look at this informative video by Ron Lemen: (YT link)
Ron Lemen called this "spiralling" or "tornado" gestures, which seems appropriate. I believe he explains the technique and the rationale behind it very well. I would also recommend checking out his other educational videos.
This week we're trying out this "spiralling gesture" method. Simply draw some gestures or figures using this technique. This is not a complicated exercise, but very useful. Note that this exercise can be very suitable to get the hang on gestures from imagination.

Background
We have a little longer this week (see second post). We'll make use of that time and take the opportunity to perform a longer study.

Exercise
This weeks' optional study will be a long figure study from reference. The approach is rather simple.
Start by finding a good quality image of a figure, possibly high-resolution. I'll be adding possible reference sources shortly. The figure can be clothed or nude, coloured or in black/white. Take some time for sketching, and post work in progress shots if possible. This way we can offer critique along the way, which is a big advantage. We have some more time, so we can spend a little more time on refining as well.

Inspiration
Here's some inspiration that may apply to the current optional study.

Spartan Camp #260- 50 gestures + Optional "Hand Gestures Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 7th of April.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Hand Gestures Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

The Background
A simple but effective study this time around! Drawing hands can be very tough, so this week we'll give them a little extra attention.

The Exercise
To keep this tricky subject simple, we'll use the same method as with figures. Rather than to focus on complex details we draw the basic shapes, form, (e)motion, and movement. We draw some gestures. For this weeks optional study, some of your gestures should be hands. A convenient way to perform this study is to simply draw your own (other) hand. Using a mirror is useful to create more gestures and get a different view. Note that we are gesture drawing, so we are not aiming for elaborate studies. This is also easier to maintain for your posing hand. To give you an idea, this sketchbook post has some good hand gestures. drawings.

Reference
If you don't feel like using your own hand, here's a few possible reference sources

Link 1: Posemaniacs' hands. Can be rotated.
Link 2: I recently found this guide and have not had the opportunity to go trough the whole thing. It seems tailored towards antropomorphic drawing, but it also has some decent reference for the current optional study under the "hands" section.
Link 3: Medical examinations such as these can provide some quick gesture reference.
Link 3: Random hand photo gallery.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Spartan Camp #259 - 50 gestures + Optional "Figure Turnaround Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 31th of March.

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Figure Turnaround Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

Exercise
This week we'll practice our understanding of form by drawing a single pose as viewed from different sides. Here's how it goes. You start off by taking a reference image of a single figure pose. Try to find one that gives you a good clear view of the whole body. A good starting image goes a long way. Either clothed or naked is fine. You then use this image to draw a small series of gestures using this pose as viewed from different sides. Imagine rotating the figure around and taking pictures from the side.
This could be a tough exercise since it will demand some use of foreshortening. Some tips:
- No need to go for elaborate figure drawings. You can use gestures and refine them if you wish.
- It might be a good idea to start off by planning the number of views you'll draw. For example four (front, back, two sides) would be a suitable minimum. You could also do a quick top-view sketch to figure out your 'camera positions' and use that as a basis.
You can make an animated GIF of the result if you wish, however this is not required.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
