I am starting more academic, Atelier-esque studies to help hone my skills in drawing and eventually painting, on top of what my University tries to offer.
I am looking for more feedback than normal, and I thought that I would have a better chance in this part of the forums than anywhere else.
If anyone thinks that this thread should instead be moved into sketchbooks, please tell me so.

Otherwise I am looking for lots of critique, tips, and advice on anything and everything posted here.


I started this Summer with some eyes from the first plate of the Bargue cast drawings, which I will be doing in graphite. I only managed to spend 1.5-2 hours on each eye for a total of ~9 hours, which I think might not have been enough time. I've made extra marks around certain parts to indicate where I was wrong and what was wrong with it. This was also my first time trying the sight-size method with any seriousness. I look for any critique on the plate or suggestions when working with the sight-size method. Below my drawing is the section of the plate that I worked on. The most accurate eye is located in the bottom left of the plate.





I am also working on a still life in charcoal and will post the still life and some progression of the drawing tomorrow.

I recently had my solo senior art exhibit, this is required in order to receive my degree. I created a short film for those who were not able to personally attend.

Thompson’s exhibit, “Ativan Altar,” will feature a collection of paintings and ceramic work. The show, which is appropriate for all audiences, runs through May 3rd.

Artist Statement:
I’ve had an anxious personality since a very young age,” Thompson said. “I have tried to capture the exact moment when these feelings first started; a rush of feelings that consume me on a daily basis. That moment of panic when the only thing I know is fear. My vision becomes blurred, my stomach churns on itself, and I feel disconnected from my body. There is a constant feeling of being overwhelmed and claustrophobic. The thought that there is no escape and I am trapped. All that is clear is a landscape that goes on forever, with no possibility of finding the way out. There is a constant urge to vomit from the simplest of daily tasks and this fear of being watched. With such a state of anxiety, the line between excitement and nervousness fades. The mind races with every possible negative thought known, with no sights of alleviation. For years I was given a false sense of hope. Through medication and the idea of prayer, I was told that it isn’t normal to feel this way. I long for the feeling to not be able to feel at all.

im having loads of trouble with drawing cathedrals and im hoping someone could recommend sites on the net where step by step drawing of cathedrals is taught .Book recommendations would also be great

Hi, I am a new member and I'm looking to improve my drawing skills. My plan that I will follow is to draw everyday and to make each attempt better (and more accurate) then the last. Here are some of my drawings. Comments, advice and suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.

From browsing this site for just a few days I feel that I have gotten a sense of what critique I would get by posting my works: work on your fundamentals. I also know how much work you'll have to put in, and how you must get drawing to get good. However, because fundamentals follow fairly strickt rules I belive just drawing won't cut it. So, if any of you could recommend some exercises to get me started it would be great.
For the second part of my post I would like to ask about artbooks. Is it worth buying one and following it. I feel like I know, in theory that is, the basics in rendering, perspective and composition and I wonder how much more theory there is to it. Or is it all about application? Will drawing hundereds of boxes in perspective and whatnot really help with the more complicated stuff. Or is it better to get out of my comfortzone?

As you might pick up, I'm kind of lost so any tips would be greatly appriciated :)

I start to paint 3 months ago because i was bored and i need something to challenge me and to explore and understand solitude, so i think painting it's a good choice,, it keeps my mind open and i slowly see that this effects other things that i do with photography etc, ,, ,,

Hello! I have a few canvases that I painted on a few years ago that I just hate looking at now and would love to paint on top of them.
Only problem is that they are done in Water-Soluble Oil Paints and I want to paint in Acrylic.

Is this possible? Will Gesso stick well to the water soluble oil paint?

I know painting on top of oils with acrylic is a big no-no but I was wondering if it would be different since its water soluble.
If all else fails, I'm willing to take the canvas off, flip it over, re-stretch the canvas, and paint on the back.

I'm stuck at completing the cast shadow of boxes. As you can see, I managed to find part of the shadow.
Do you know how to find the remaining borders? A link to an older thread would be fine too, I searched the forum (and googled it) but couldn't find a solution.
