Rat-King Demon(s) - done as an entry for the Stan Winston facebook challenge of creating a demon. Did it this week in between work. Chavant nsp medium and about 7" x 7". Wanted to have a bunch of different demon heads smooshed together so I could play with the 'fleshiness' of them cramped together. The name came after as it felt appropriate. Turned out pretty good with the amount of time I had to put into it.

I did use a little photoshop burn and dodge as my camera is less than perfect and the lighting setup would not give me the contrast I was looking for.

I recently got into 3D printing. This is my first attempt to create a 3D model that can be printed with action figure like articulation. It basically works like a snap together model kit. It has about 30 points of articulation. I had to do some sandpapering in order to make everything fit together but that is something one should expect when 3D printing. The seam lines are a little bit big but I believe that has more to do with the resolution of my printer then the 3D file. The model and all the joints were created in Softimage. It was then exported as STL file via Zbrush. The final Boolean operations for the joints as well as some cleaning up of the geometry were done in Netfabb. The figure is about 7 inches tall. It has a couple of swapable hands and the weapons can be stored on the back of the figure.

I recently sold this stone carving and thought I would post the process.

I work in stone using power tools.

I recently sold this stone carving and thought I would post the process.

I work in stone using power tools.
Most of the material is removed by making cuts with an
aggressive diamond blade on an angle grinder.
I use the type of blade that will carve dry.
A lot of dust and noise. Not for the faint of heart.
Water can relieve the dust but it has it's own challenges.
Especially in winter.
Carving outside and wearing protective equipment.

Carving by moonlight.

My stone was long and about 4 inches thick.
I cut sections by cutting a groove on each side
and tapping with a hammer and chisel to break the piece.

Roughing out.

Shaping by grinding with the diamond blade.
This type of blade has small squares on the edge and is very aggressive.

To remove small sections of stone with control,
I cross hatch to make small squares,
and tap with a chisel to remove the piece.

The grass reeds are put in to support the legs ans neck.

Ploishing is done with diamond pads,
but I first go over the area with a fine diamond blade
followed by coarse sand paper.
The diamond pads are expensive and I use water to help
extend their life.

finished

and in the garden ...

He has at least one admirer!

hi. :)
thought i might share those.
ive made some lifesize sculpures from trash when i was at art school. when i found a way to build sculptures i want hold on to.
the first one is rather finished.
the upper body is made from plaster bandages wrapped around a model.
cut off + sewed back together again.
cotton fabric and bone based glue to make it harder+long lasting.
its coloured with oil paint.
its not yet as i wanted it to be. the bottom part should resemble a skirt of paintings and frames, which is not yet working out fine enough.

for the pan i used pretty much the same technique. for the hands and the face i used a quick casting paste. and filled the negativ with some kinda ceramiic paste.
its a wip so far too.
if you got any hint for me how i could make a figure that way but more waterproof id be pleased.
+ should i make the flower hes holding any different to make it more recognizable? and how? :)
thanks for watching.
have a nice day

How to become garage kit sculptor?

Hi all,
I have seen some very nice articles from Concept Art site and many helped me greatly in some different ways. I just recently went over the article by Wetterschneider about how to build a toy or sculpture and in depth guides with steps needed for most if not all the possible cases, this was great article =).

But I have just recently read another article from other site where a japanese garage kit sculptor talked a bit about him and his group (called circles), they were all students, and only about 3, but there seems to be groups of even less people. That made me think, because in Japan there are some events every year just for the sculptors to sell and showcase their works, but some of them are just as said students with few money and just a big will and skills. So I wonder how they produce their figures? I read also that one can cast resin into mold with more or less accuracy at home but this method is also known to leave bubbles inside if not combined with presure room or vacuuming machine, of course they cut the sculpture into pieces to fit better but still... aside from that the master sculpture should be first built in strong material to make the mold, and I dont think they could use 3d printer as most of the times it will become expensive... I never used Shapeways service (which prints a sculpture for us from file we make) but I think it cant be cheap enough, then how they achieve that? there should be a method to make that affordable with few money as they dont have it most of the times while getting a very nice result.

Well I hope you can bring me some light into this because Im totally lost, and of course Im thinking about taking their way whatever it is but first I want to have the right knowledge. As a side note I mostly use computer to make 3d models but also use other physical materials to sculpt, so if the method uses computer file as starting point it will be better for me but it wont be impossible the other way.

Thanks in advance for any help =).

hi guyz,
i am a starter user with sculpey firm, still trying to get used to it. head is about 7cm tall. its right hand will be attach to just behind right ear, i am planning to study on right arm and hand after first cook, cause i am not sure i can manage details on fingers while not harming ear and head etc. is that sound a good plan? i am also not sure of this plan cause main body will take to cooking sessions at total because of this.

feel free to criticize
And I'd appriciate any advice on working short haired models like this.
