I'm working with a Wacom Intuos 5 tablet (without the touch feature), photoshop CS6 (cloud version) and a MacBook Pro Retina. Compared to my work on a PC I encountered different small "problems" with this combination of tools because Photoshop or the Mac has some time lags when for example the lasso tool is used and lines with it drawn by pointing on new coordinates. With each new point set there is a small time lag which makes working this way very hard. With some brushes (I had no problems with on the PC) there also is a small delay... but for most of them I could change the brush settings, so they work acceptable.

Does anyone of you encountered the same problems and is there a solution to fix this? I already have the newest drivers and stuff btw. Right now I think this just isn't the right system to work with for creating digital art.

Thank you for your help and feedback!

Chris

I feel like starting some conversations.
I'm not sure if one exists but I don't think it'd be appropriate to post rants and thoughts on my sketchbook,
I figure this is the most general subforum so... sorry I'm such a nubby :'D

Lately I've been trying to get back into art after years of feeling like it was better meant as a hobby.
For some reason, I decided I wanted to drop everything I had done my whole life and become a game programmer.
With no experience in coding. Fab idea.

I went to school for computer science for a while and learned how to do some neat things in Java,
but I got bored with going to such a tiny school in a small town with little to no creative flow.
I came from a city that was all about art; every where, every day; even if you didn't think about it, it was there.
I've about snapped and decided I'm moving back, but I'm not waiting to pull back the metaphorical leash on drawing.
That's what brought me here to CA.org. Anyway.

I've begun pondering some things I've been told over the years.
Things like,
"All masters were beginners once, too" or "The foundations of art are like underwear" etc.
(The latter is actually... I can't remember where I read that but it was good. Probably tumblr.
If anyone knows what I'm talking about go ahead and share. It was worth a read; Google gives me nothing)
I've been looking back on the patterns of my life over the past week and realized some things.

First of all, I suck at being an artist.
I've started to feel like being a "good artist" has nothing to do with your skill level.
People have always told me I'm a "good artist", but I always denied it furiously (when I got older anyway).
I couldn't ever give them a reason other than "I still need work." I couldn't figure out why.
I think at that point I was probably an amateur artist. When I was younger and complacent, I was a beginner.

I think being a "good artist" is about your attitude towards art, not your skill level.
This is how I've started to see it after coming here to CA.
I see people here who post on a daily basis, who are always studying, practicing, trying to get better.
Those are the people I look up to most; for their motivation, their dedication; not just their skill.

I always thought I had been wearing my artist's metaphorical underwear,
but it's become completely apparent that I actually haven't.
I've realized that there is something I have to get better at before I can get better at "art";
and that is getting better at being an artist. I have to tame the stubborn jerk that is my laziness.
Break it's spirit. Kick it's butt, etc.
It feels weird that I'm starting from square one after I've loved drawing all my life,
but also good at the same time. Refreshing, I guess.
It feels good to know that I really do suck but that I can get better, if I work hard enough.

That is all.

Layering Shades, building up the Shape/Texture - need help

I have hard problems in layering my shading to finish the final shape,
and creating a realistic texture. Im using Painter12 and draw a bit with Pencils,
tried Acrylics before and like more to paint digitally with a Wacom.
The same problem appears to me on paper and with pencils.

Whenever i sketch i draw lines and think about where the light comes from
and where shadows/tones should be. I use references to study and just do not understand
how these shadings are built up to form the final shape. Yea i have and read books,
watched tutorials and else, but something is still a mystery for me.

By observing others i noticed that even in their first stage
of painting they are blocking shapes up which fit on the spot, just clean up and detailing
is needed. Whenever i try on the first stage to be scribbly and unclean i feel like
losing the idea of how the final shading will look like.

Im using a midtone in my palette to start from and to build light up and down from there,
by painting a higher or darker tone.
This works for me on big and smaller shapes but only when they are clean and finished shapes.
#1 Example:

As i notice the layering of the light and shadows fit to the beginning shape. Meaning i tend
to support the shapes starting form by shading it about like in the same direction the
basic shape already has, i feel like being bound to the basic shape, because its too isolated.
When applying this to more complex shapes, ie. a rock or the iris of an eye my brushstrokes do
not lead somewhere.
I often read about "pictures in pictures", where more complex shapes are built up, to create texture.
I ask myself then how do i paint these, when the texture is chaotic and do not have a clean form/direction
(which i take from the basic shape).
As mentioned before, on tutorials i watched that most of the artists start by layering brushstrokes
with a low to middle opacity, to block out the shape. How are they sure what to blend together and
where to keep sharp edges, when those brushstrokes all have a sharp edge, or overlapping each other
with their opacities?! :O Do they switch their brushstroke direction in relation to something?
On what do they orientate? Is that just a matter of style? I think an artist has to know where
to put which

I do not use preserved layers and paint on the canvas, because i feel its even more setting
the starting shape into stone. I currently only use the Airbrush with 10-100% Opacity.

iTunes link to app is here

Subvision is an app for practicing your drawing whether you're into drawing from
imagination or drawing your subject in front of you.

This app doubles up as a view finder as well as a gesture timer. Animation artist will
love the gesture timer while traditional artist can benefit from the grid subdivision
and horizon line (also known as artist eye line).

Photos imported into Subvision will be cached into the app ready to be used without
needing to re-import every time you open Subvision.

Subvision further makes for a truly portable experience by including a camera vision right
within the app. This means users with a camera on their iPad can take advantage of drawing
from a live gesture model or scenery.

For the best experience with camera vision, I highly recommended that Subvision be used
with a smart cover that can hold the iPad in an upright position.

Hello everyone it's me againg!

I am still practicing drawing the head and after trying to draw it in perspective I realised I a having trouble drawing the "V" shape of the jaw. Mainly I am unable to acurately point where to put the "peak" of the "v" shape.

a)Is the peak at the level of the middle of the mouth?/(1/3) from nose to base of the head
b)Is it at the base of the lips?/ (1/2) from nose to the base of the head

I have looked for reference but it is has been very very contradictory to say the least and it hasn't helped me to solve this.

and not even proko's reference (my main one becuase he is bases his method on loomis) has been very useful... (acording to his drawing it isn't at neither of those 2 points)

Some references say that it is at the 1/3 while other say that it is at 1/2. From nose to base of the head.

I am confused... who is right?

thank you for your time!

I recently got into 3D printing. This is my first attempt to create a 3D model that can be printed with action figure like articulation. It basically works like a snap together model kit. It has about 30 points of articulation. I had to do some sandpapering in order to make everything fit together but that is something one should expect when 3D printing. The seam lines are a little bit big but I believe that has more to do with the resolution of my printer then the 3D file. The model and all the joints were created in Softimage. It was then exported as STL file via Zbrush. The final Boolean operations for the joints as well as some cleaning up of the geometry were done in Netfabb. The figure is about 7 inches tall. It has a couple of swapable hands and the weapons can be stored on the back of the figure.
