concept:
These flies are attracted by the smell of blood, just like sharks, when the prey is wounded, many others will follow the scent of blood and join the chase. They swoop down on the prey at high speed and perform a dipping motion with their abdomen razors, which results in a deep cut causing severe bleeding. Each cut bleeds and weakens the prey, while adding more flies to the chase. At the end there would only be an exhausted prey covered by thousands of moving green shapes while its flesh is slowly being torn away.

concept:
The Razor Fly spends most of it's time sifting through various scrap yards, collecting bits of aluminum and other soft metals in which it uses it's acidic saliva to melt down and form a very fashionable but deadly helmet, fully equiped with a set of sharp and deadly razors for which the species aquired it's name. The only thing more spectacular then to witness a rare Razor Fly, is to behold two Razor Flys whose paths have crossed, for a fight to a death ensues and only one Razor Fly may emerge victorious, the other left for death.
The Razor Fly is in truth, not a fly at all, but a species similar to that of the Damsel Fly. Due to the species' unsual desire to collect metal and continually expand the razors on it's helmet, the common Razor Fly lives no longer then a few months, most often dieing from severe battles with other Razor Flys or the fact that partial metals are digested as it creates it's helmet.

concept: The Reaper
The Razor Fly, also known as the Reaper, is a fat but dangerous parasite. Using it's finely honed talons, the Reaper will slice trenches into it's victims and lay it's eggs. Once the eggs are laid, the Razor Fly will suture the wound with a thick but sterilized goo. The eggs suck in as much nutrients from the embedded creature, usually causing necrosis. Once the site begins to fester the eggs have just hatched, the Reaper will return to break the skin of the victim and harvest it's young. The larvae will attach themselves to the Reaper and they will move onto another site of the creature. The experience of being struck by the Razor Fly is quite a painful one. Many slow moving animals, such as livestock, cannot protect their exposed backside, often find themselves the victim. Farmers lose countless dollars from the meat that is ruined by these pestilential parasites.

concept: Anax Terminus (family Aeshnidae, genera Anax)
The Razor fly is the most aggressive in the Anax genera. Once it has emerged from the larval state it uses a razor edged weapon on the underside of its tail to kill prey that it lures with its amber-like protrusion. The blade like weapon is formed with chitin and although incredibly thin and strong it is very lightweight.

concept:
The Razor Fly lives in the deep jungles of Brazil. It's unique razor-like apendages are used for attacking larger prey, such as tiny jungle mice. The apendages are made up of hardened cartilage, which is flexible, durable, and sharp as a razor. When prey is spotted, the Razor Fly swoops down on the creature and inbeds it's dagger-like apendages into the body. A poison-like toxin, coating the apendages, slowly liquifies the prey's insides until it is ready to be devoured by the Razor Fly. The poison is not deadly to humans, but you can become extremely sick if you come in contact with the substance.

concept:
The common household fly was getting out of control. The population was above and beyond what anyone would have ever imagined possible so the humans needed to act. Eventually they created a parasite that could kill off the species quickly and without harming any other life on the planet. They would inject the parasite with a high radiation chemical to act as a catalyst to it's development process and once they reached it's maturity, the parasites would be released to do their job. After about half the population flies had been wiped out, the flies began to gain hideous defense against the parasite. It would now absorb the parasite and as a result from the high radiation chemicals used on them, the flies began to mutate. The grew 5 times in size, grew a hard outer shell. The top of their shells comes to a sharp point that people often step on by mistake and end up cutting their feet. Hence the nickname "Razor Fly".

concept: The Chelicon
The Chelicon – Razor Fly – once lived in the dry places and deserts of our globe. Like many other creatures they followed the canyons of dried out rivers in search for water and carrion. The great pointy protrusions on their back had several uses, the main being as storage of fat and liquid. Secondly, the sharp points and razor-like edges of these served as a defence against dinosaur carnivores, who would only hunt the Chelicon when at the point of starvation. Also, the patterned surface of these outgrowths is believed to have functioned as a sort of attraction at mating season, together with the vivid reds of the insect’s body.

The razor fly its on top of the list when it comes to well adapted creatures, basing their main diet on Goni Goni fruit they have adapted their bodies to fit into the little dents of the Goni Goni tree making it able for her to reach their beloved food, never the less their slim bodies enable them to fit into the tightest places..weather it is for food or to make it imposible for predators to reach their larva. wich is exactly how they get so thin, the flexible larva grows up in the shrunken space making their bodies flatenned and soft as they grow up. being that thin and having those minuscule little grey hairs covering their bodies they receive the name of razor fly

The Razor Fly is a typical bug which has the ability of making small cuts through human skin in order to lay its eggs.
Here you have a male fly ready to cut the skin using its sharp blade.
Razor flies born bladeless, but after 2 days (they live about a week) the razor grows.
The female doesn't have this type of blade since it only lays eggs.

A new species has just been identified...Calliphora Razora or the “Razor fly" (as its affectionately become known)...is just the latest in a long line of what scientists believe to be a product of advanced evolution and one that is taking the insect world by storm. This mighty monstrosity won’t be squashed like a normal bug… oh no, it appears to have developed 3 blades upon its back and a hardened more robust body structure capable of withstanding up to 90psi, that makes killing one no easy task. Recently discovered by local entomologists this pest slices and dices its way thru nets, flyswatters, screen doors, even the occasional bumbling scientist’s hand! Caution must be used when encountering this species, in the event one is in your home call 1-800-BIG-BUGS and the appropriate authorities will be dispatched. Each new discovery will be captured for further study.

Beelzebub is Lord of the Flies. The Abadimbaal, or Razor Flies, are his foot soldiers in the wars he fights against heaven and within hell. On their native plane, the Abadimbaal stand 12 feet tall and are fierce in battle. On our material plane of existence, they're not much larger than our own insects. The Abadimbaal travel to our world for one purpose... to breed. Abadimbaal maggots must fester in the living flesh of a human, preferably a young virgin or a priest that practices celibacy. An Abadimbaal comes in the night when its victim is sleeping, slices open the flesh and spawns its fetid larvae. Newborn Abadimbaal must hatch, consume the host and steal back to hell by sunrise or die.

concept:
The razor-fly is a large tropical species from the rainforests of australia, which can generally be found around the remains of dead animals during the months of its breeding season. It uses the bladelike ridges on its body and limbs to hack little grooves into the flesh of the animal, into which it lays million of tiny eggs with its spike-shaped ovipositor, before pulling the flesh closed again to protect the delicate eggs from the sun. The maggots grow and develop inside the moist rotting flesh of the host carcass, before hatching into mature razor flies and flying off to find their own nest-corpse. The spikes on its body also serve to make it a rather unpalatable meal for any hungry predator that might otherwise eat it.
While they are normally quite harmless to those content to leave it alone, they have been known to form swarms and attack live animals when food and nesting opportunities are scarce. In this case, the victim is rarely killed immediately (the chitinous blades seldom manage to inflict serious wounds), but faces the horrible prospect of being eaten alive from the inside if they fail to remove all of the sticky, almost transparent eggs from their wounds before they hatch- indeed, the main reason these creatures seldom breed out of control is that, if the mother fails to rid herself of all eggs, she herself will be eaten long before the next breeding season.

About the size of a tennis ball, the females swarm after mating. Flying at ground level (hence the 'raze' reference... scraping the ground, stretching it i know! ) they hunt for hosts for their eggs, primarily large mammels. Hitting the host at great speed the needle like appendage pierces the skin, at the same time the impact compresses the abdomen, forcing the eggs into the host at high pressure. This ensures the safety of the females eggs but also kills the fly in the process - an eye for an eye!

concept:
The razor fly was a prehistoric insect that was defensive in nature. If threatened, three large blade like bones would pop out of its thorax with great speed. Some researchers have suggested that these sharp blades could have vibrated violently when extended. The stinger is acutally a useless appendage that only looks dangerous and usually falls off in old age. The second set of eyes on the legs of the razor fly were quite useful during an age with so many predators.

The Razor Fly was once a bain of early farmers life. Due to myths involving 'the white wings of the devil coming to take your youngest child away' and other nonsense stories, the Razor fly flourished with no opposition for centuries. Taking large portions of meat from livestock, rendering the remaining carcass useless for sale, the Razor fly was initially thought to be a fierce predator.
Yet with the advent of technology scientologists studied the Razor fly intently, finding that due to its large 'razors' it was infact a cumbersome flyer and only took meat from already dead animals frozen from the previous nights blizzard. So the saying goes..."the razor fly will fly straight by, if only thy cow would have warm upper thigh"?

concept: The Monk Razor Fly
People in the warm regions of the world are familiar with the Domestic Razor Fly, and the inconvenience it can be when these insects, in search of blood, decide to cut your skin with their minuscule blades. But the public at large usually ignore the fact that, in some parts of the world, Razor Flies were once as large as a horse, and armed with blades capable of cutting a man's head clean off.
In Tuva (a small country in Central Asia), the Monk Razor Fliy was the scourge of the land, attacking and sucking the blood of everything that moved. Since it was too big and fat to fly, the Monk only used its wings to create a infernal buzz which intimidated its prey, and to lift the desert sands to cause temporary blindness. Its body was covered by detachable plates that fell off in a fight, confusing an eventual attacker and giving the fly the chance to escape. Not that many animals would attack the Monk Razor Fly: its meat was poisonous for most living creatures, and its only rumored predator was the Roc Bird, a humongous bird that was never proved to exist outside of middle eastern legends.
Fortunately, this living nightmare had a very short lifespan, like most common flies. in a week it reached adulthood, and a week later reproduced and died. Early inhabitants of the central Tuva region simply avoided leaving their dwellings during the fly season (between May and July), to avoid horrible death. Eventually, the species declined, mostly due to weather changes in the region. For such a fierce predator, the Monk Razor Fly was very sensitive to temperature variations.
Not much of a fossil record of this incredible animal survived, except for small body parts preserved in amber rocks. The High Lama of Tuva was rumored to own a giant Amber stone which contained an entire animal, which was described by a Japanese traveler who came to central Asia to learn Buddhism. When the traveller came back to Japan, his sketches describing the armor plates and curved blades of the fly are told to have become the inspiration for the classic samurai armor attire. The amber stone containing the last Monk Razor Fly, if ever existed, was seized in the Russian occupation of Tuva and never seen again.

concept:
A little bully in the insect world, the Razorfly (thought about changing the name but this one was too cool)has a knack for beating up his prey before dining upon their delicious innards.
Since his diet consists mostly of beetles and the occasional housefly, this little brute has developed giant mandibles for flipping his victim on to their backs, then using his razor sharp tail to disembowel the unlucky bug that crosses his path. Even the carapace of the gentle ladybug has proven to be too tough for our little assassin so here too he must wrestle his meal to the ground.
It is beleived that the Razor fly evolved from some sort of rare union between a dragon fly and the robber fly, but to this day none have been captured in a well enough condition to determine their evolutionary track.

The razor fly, also known as the razorwing fly and the scissor bug, evolved a pair of hardened wings with razor sharp (or nearly so) leading edges. The fly uses a specialized set of fast-twitch muscles to flip the wings over and swing them forward, mimicking scissors. The remaining wings have nearly atrophied, leaving the bug only capable of short hops of a few metres at a time. The fly uses its wings only for defense.

Try to polish the work more...eg make straight lines really straight and not wiggly....avoid sloppy lines even if they should symbolize movement, they decrease the overal quality. And finally add a concept to your entry. It can help compensating misunderstandings or issues on the artwork ;)

I voted for Davi. In addition to it being lovely, it inspired me to go researching the suicide rates of different countries around the world, allowing me to dispell some of my preconceptions and achieve a deeper understanding of the great nation of Sweden and its nine million inhabitants. :) Not to mention ABBA.
Very close seconds include Sweden's greatest artist, Cloister, as well as Garret Hanna, whiteeeeeeeeeeeee and edujante. When I say "very close" I mean a razor thin margin between first and second place. har har.
The high quality level this week is some of the most evenly spread out I've seen in COW. It reminds me of some of the most fierce battles like Hellish Beast. I guess we like bugs.
Nice work everyone.

LOL. You see? Did I not predict this in the posting thread? Supervlieg loves the white hot speculars. Every single time. You can count on it like you can count on the sun rising.
Hehehe I missed that post. But I have to admit I love them specs. Especially if theyre in the right place. yummy.

I voted for ZonE because I really like his design. The fly really looks natural and unique compared to the other designs, I like his idea of it always flying in swarms, very cool man!

I voted for leosdel. His design seemed unique but still fly like and was well executed. Some of the better rendered entries felt like insects but not really like flies.

Too many to decide on!!! :xpld:
After, literally, sitting here for an hour I finally voted for Leosdel. Mainly for the colors, lens effect and the realistic biological aspects. Absolutely amazing!
Congrats!!!

ToeKnee gets my vote, great first attempt at the COW competitions, who knows what a bit of colour would have done for the picture but B/W seems to suit it perfectly. Cool description too.

So many to choose from, but in the end I voted for Whiteeeee. I love the rendering and design, it just looks like it would hurt if you accidently stepped on the bug.

... As already mentioned...a tricky one to vote on.
Finally the emotional faculties took over and made way for Kevzip. The design is perhaps not the most likely logically speaking, but for me it brings a sense of mystery which I think it's the only one to convey here ... some inexplicable alien intelligent lurking bug whose purposes remain obscure. The high-tech organic world-warping wings and mysterious head make an appealing contrast to the crude devise of razors. I’m surprised and charmed.
Leodsel and whiteeeee gets to share the silver-medal.
(I'd have preferred voting in several categories this time around... best idea, best artwork, originality, most likely and so on...and so on)
Nice round! Perhaps I'll found some energy for the next one as well.
Cheers!:)

haha, this was nearly impossible. Great work, everyone.
voted for michaeljaecks; loved your concept, man! It was pure fantasy, a different approach from much else that I saw, and who knew a lilac-colored demon fly from Hell could look so cool?
Close seconds were xgabo for style and kreator for a great rendering and cool idea. Here's to more rounds like this one (and I'll for sure participate)!

Voted for Southern.
Other really close picks were cloister, el_khan, & whiteeeeeee

That's awesome. I have to work that into my signature or avatar caption or something. "Lilac-colored demon fly from Hell."
Thanks for the vote in this fierce field of competition.n :)

I voted Michael Jaecks. A real bug monstrocity that for me went beyond a normal insect with some shiny bits crazy glued on.
Great quality of work from everyone this round. I am impressed!

A lot of these are gruesome, gross, and just plain cool, but xgabo's feels the most menacing and creepy to me... so that's where my vote goes :)
My second place is Sangmort just 'cause I love those colors :)
and third is Southern, the attractive goop is great but mostly I'm loving the mouthparts! lol

If only there were voting categories, cause it's damn hard to pick just one. Don't know how you do it Fozzybar.
I went with Cloister cause it just seemed the most visually appealing.

went with whiteeeeee. i love the coherent painted look of this one. i think it's missing a leg though and i do feel like the wings are a bit heavy, but overall a really nice application of concept and style. way to go everyone!

Wow there were quite a few I liked. I went with Michael Jaecks because it felt the most different and interesting from all of them. There was a more illustrative comic book concept, than just a really cool painting.
Davi's submission makes you think, had a great abstract concept going for it too, and certainly gave disturbing imagery.
I was also torn surprisingly for edujante it just told a story in its simplicity. The simple color palette worked really well for this, I could see it as part of a storyboard. The same goes for Cloister
I also loved how creepy xgabo's submission was too. I love that grungy brush texture by the way.
Although I like whiteeeeeee's rendering, some reason it felt like it should have been pushed further with the background.
A lot of great stuff guys!
One submission I also liked

Wow, great work everyone! I had so many favorites it was hard to pick one. IN the end Leosdel got my vote.
Jcai: I love that you showed off the swarm and the cow. I really like the foggy feel.
Sangmort: I'm diggin' the comic type feel. I also really like the texture in the wings.
jurffy: I like the tail, it reminds me a fishing lure. Though I think the wings need to be defined more
Southern: Brilliant image. Brilliant. I love the wings and the abdomen, it looks like this thing really exists.
Timothee: Love your style, simple, stylish and your idea is clearly defined.
Garrett: The watercolor feel of your image is great. Such a strong piece for your first COW.
Cloister: I really like how you drew the legs of your fly, I can imagine that if I stepped on it, it would make an awful crunch.
Tigerazzo: I think your piece could have benefitted from more color and some stronger linework.
Ikuru: I love love love your image. I want it tattoo'd on me.
skekTec: greeeeat illustration dude, don't get me wrong, but really I think you could have pushed the idea further.
Alejjo: cute idea, but I think you needed to push the detail in the image.
Baltasar: Cool drawing, and great attention to detail in the wings. I would say, push the feel movement on the grass, and that would kick it up a notch.
Eric Gerhard: I LOVE the lighting and the depth of field effect you've got going on.
Woodlandwalker: very cute idea. I like all the diagrams, but there's a lot going on in the piece, it takes away from the image.
ZonE: love this piece man. I like the wings and the blade, dangerous.
Antne: So sick dude. I would have thought the thumb to have more blood in it though.
El Kahn: Killer Illo, but really, all I'm seeing is the bugs from Starship Troopers
Davi: meeeeeeessed up. great idea, very dark.
Tommoy: I love how you painted this and I love the style.
Kevzip: I really really like the texture on this piece. I can't wait to see more of your stuff.
Leosdel: Dude, you've got my vote. Great design, great feel of motion, and sweet painting.
Ravenslayer: I think you should have made the fly a lot more prominent on the page.
Whiteeeee: I can't see your PIC! AAAH!
Edujante: You are my runner up. I love this image, taking up the torch of Tyranx. Great work man, great.
jchery: very creepy, though I think it should have been closer up on the creature.
Michael Jaecks: I always love your stuff. I like the comic style of it.
Eriboss: I stupid for asking but, was this done in painter or did you actually paint it on canvas? Because I love the feel of it.
Rabbithole: it's adorable and I want to hug it.
Food: You were a tie for my vote. I love how you painted this. LOVE it. The only reason I didn't vote was because I didn't think "razor" at first glance.
Jasmin: Cool drawing, but I think you could have push the highlights and shadows.
Kreator: KILLER KILLER. love this one. Your style really inspires. The fly looks a lot like the ones I grew up around in El Paso.
T0eknee: Splooooooooooog! NO more for this bug, he's had enough. I think you really could have really kick it up if you put color in it.
Electric Goat: always a favorite. I love the bright colors and the wings.
Eraser Foot: I really like the style of your image. Great design, but I think a 3/4 view would have made it even cooler.
Enbe: I like the painter feel of it.
Xgabo: there's so much that I love about your pic. Texture, style, feel, lighting. Awesome work.
Scorge: Again, you're always one of my favs. I just feel bad for the lady bug, it never saw it coming.
Whew.......that took a while.

This one definitely defines tough. How many times can you look at a variation of a fly? Apparently 38. Fuck, what a great round.
So, I've received one vote and I thank Mr. Bill for that. One of the biggest problems I've had when doing the cow is enter some scientific rational explantion for why my cow exists. Oh well, I had fun doing it as always.
On to the crits:
Corspufo Just saw your comment. Thanks man. May I offer some advice? Killer idea, rough drawing. I don't think you're doing your guy justice with this one. Biggest thing, tightness. I was a little confused at first when I saw yours becuse of the blur factor. Concentrate on the focus some more and you'll be slaying all of us. San Clemente huh? Spent some time at Camp Pandleton myself. San Clemente was one of my favorite hangouts.
Southern Damn, you knew what you wanted and you pulled it off in one of the most impressive and detailed pics I've seen in a while. Be-a-utiful. Digging the bug anatomy especially.
Timothee Almost too cute. Reminds me of Transformers for some reason. Love the pose though, says "Come on, I dare ya' to mess with me!"
Garrett Hanna Crazy surreal feel.
Cloister Action intensified to the max. You're stuff's getting better and better every time I check in. You were a very close second. What's this about teaching? I just got out of that game myself. Long story short, Academy of Art University in SF. No love lost there.
Ikuru Remember when I told you that I loved your humor? I could see this hanging above someone's mantle. Your artistic side is showing dude.
Skektek The rendering could use some work, but the idea is definitely there along with the graphic element. Priceless.
Davi You're crazy, and you can draw like a mofo, and your ideas are simply revolutionary. Fight, the, power.(In other words, Foz) Great shit.
Tommoy Very nice rendering. Seriously lacking in the description though. Would've helped.
Leosdel Awesome drawing and depiction of your cow. Motion effects are great. Do you really believe in censorship?
Whiteeeee What can I say? Beautiful texture, lines, anatomy and I think the lack of background make this little bastard more majestic. Fucking awesome. I'm learning from you. One step at a time.
Edujante Freaky nightmare. Thanks.
JChery Only two legs? Must be rough for this guy. Like the atmosphere though.
MJ I really, really hate to say this, but your colors are dying. The choice is great as always in terms of creative choice and contrast, but I have to admit it was your lack of outlines and vibrance that I really looked up to. My 2 sense.
Food The first time I saw yours, I said "winner!". It's all in the details and you captured it beautifully. Kick ass. I will admit though that once I read the description and probably spent twenty minutes trying to figure out the city scape, my brain was a little scrambled.
Electric Goat Man, this is truly the essence of concept art. Color, attitude, contrast, ideation(I know Woodlandwalker got it in first but how many times have we had an idea for cow and see that some one else has done the same already? Hmmmmm?) I'm surprised no one else has commented on this. Great piece of work my friend. Reminds me of a different era.
Finally Exgabo You got my vote. So many different reasons I can't even begin to list them. I will say that the lack of a face, or should I say the one I imagine is the key element here. Fuckin' gold my friend. Great job.
Scorge A little dry. Try to get into the feel for the conceptual rather than the factual. The pose is nice, but the drama that you were going for here is lacking. Nice rendering though. The wings in the back should be showing if they're at rest. Oh wait, that's me isn't it!? You know what they say. About your worst critic and all.
Anyway, great god almighty this is one of the best cows I've seen in while. See you all in the next one if I can make it.

argh... god this has been tough! Finally decided to vote on Leosdel - seemed to me like a straight forward idea that was brilliantly executed, can imagine it buzzing about in real life.. which would suck as it looks pretty nasty! the work on the wings is amazing too
Corspufo: Thanks for the comment! Should have coloured it but ran out of time in the end... next round i'll take def your advice! cheers

I'm voting Southern. I'm a sucker for realistic details, this one is no exception. While I find other ideas more special, as ZonE's or Cloister's, when it comes to bugs, I can't help but fall in love with good perspective, colors and details.
Clone behind is ZonE's, who would have won my vote if there was just a little more colors or volume.
Cloister and Davi also deserve a comment. The first one has a nice design, and a very good story behind it, and Davi's is surreal and done well enough to impress me.

First thanx for the vote Piru, and thanx for the kind words Scorge (Im flattered) and Corspufo (If you love it so much then why didnt you vote for it huh? ;) Yeah I see how it might work as a tatoo, I like that thought. ;))
I voted for Xgabo since he just happen to have that strong and dynamic composition and its really well executed and full of ennergy...
My second choice was Scorge, (I had a hard time picking one of these). I think its cute and I get the feeling its happy, like its actually smiling at me ;), allso it got allot of character and personalety, the more I look at it the more I like it.

Thank you for the votes! This round I also seem (I'm trying to say this without a bragging tone) to have "won" a few silvers and bronze-medals, and I'm very happy for those as well (...glad to be mentioned, really). I am trying to take this fantasy-art-thing more seriously now, and I hope to push my work to a professional level quite soon. All comments on how my imagery can be improved are always very welcome, and of course, when someone likes what I do, it's a nice and encouraging thing to hear it, even if there is some other entry more suited for the vote. So, thanks for the comments, guys! :)
RabbitHole: Thank you for the vote... if you would please seek out the voting-facility and conduct the actual voting as well... hehe ;)
scorge: Thanks. I've been teaching art (high-school, and college-level) four days a week for seven years. It hasn't been bad really (in Sweden teachers have about 14 paid weeks off (vacation/holiday) a year, which gives some time for concentrated painting.). But I'll probably try to find something else to do now... I never really chose an occupation... simply ended up there.
Btw, how tough is the free-lance business? Anyone?

I received good critiques on the submission thread, and with that i'll try to do a
better design for the next cow.

i vote for Leosdel
the fly looks as if it could be really existing. Funny description and excellent rendering with a fine design. Top notch!
my favs
Cloister
cool design and rendering. Bummer, that the razors are not implemented with a more interesting idea ;)
skekTec
love the idea. Nice render though too hard and thick lines on the wings ;)
ZonE
pure beauty :)
Tommoy
actually my runner-up. very nice design and hilarious descritpion :D
white(with 5 mio eeeeeeeeeeeeeees)
Superb design and rendering...lovely colors as well. Only the razor idea is a bit on the non-creative side :)
jchery
very unique...the most interesting and different design in the round imo...kudos on that. Very cool. But what happened to your eyes while painting the tail? It looks....errr....badly rendered...;)
electric goat
very pop and impressive art (what a pun). Very nice idea and design on the topic. Only problem is the back eye which is mixing up with the background because of the same color....maybe some adjustment on the saturation or outlining would help...
scorge
nice design. A bit too much of color mixing on the flies body and wings for my taste though ;)

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys! I've been drooling over the C.O.W entries for months and now i finally have the time to do a few. I promise I'll be more vocal with crits and comments on the next one. for now.....
Corspufo- creepy fly, i like creepy. i'm digg'n the texture and tones in the eyes. however, i think if you reorganized/simplified your palette and put a little more love into the focal area you would have a more impactful image.
Scorge- i enjoyed the story behind this image. the little guy looks like a bully and the anatomy is believable. the rendering is good and reminds me of an image from an illustrated guide or quality story book. the background color seems to kill the palette a bit though. maybe try more contrast in color by using complimentary combinations. just a thought.
Fozzybar- yup, that eye just fades away... thanks for picking my suggestion, it kind of forced me to produce something!

This was a pretty awesome round.
JCai - Very cool entry. I like your composition quite a bit, your eyes are drawn up into the cloud of the flies. The focus seems to be away from the detailed flies on the beasts back.
Sangmort - Interesting design. Very interesting concept. I would like to have seen more versions of the helmet.
Corspufo - I like the eyeball like the eggs in the rump, although they look kinda like eyes attached to the rump instead of inside of it. The design seems a bit heavy too. I have a hard time believing it can fly.
jurffy - I really like your tail, very nice.
SOUTHERN - Good god. Just an amazing entry. The only thing that I don't really like is the hairs on its' back. Very cool piece.
timothee - Pretty nice pose and I like how the wings are up so high. It does seem to be floating over the leaf and not attached to it. I also have a hard time believing that it can fly, there are wings missing from it.
Garrett Hanna - Oh when will mankind learn from the mistakes of it's past. Radiation makes horrible horrible mutants that will cause us no end of trouble. Very neat concept by the way. Kinda big and dramatic for something that just cause a bit of a nick to ones foot. Wild look and design. It seems like it could hover even without the wings thanks to those nuclear vents.
Cloister - I really like your color choices. Also it is a very nice design and a neat concept. I like that it is a creature that once existed but is now extinct.
tigerazzo - Interesting design, but not a very strong entry. I like your trees in the background.
ikuru - energetic and colorful. I lie the white milkyish eyes. It seems almost undead to me.
skekTec - Very fun design. I like that it is basically a normal fly, but the addition of the razors along it's side is a very subtle and fun way of handling this subject. The little comic at the bottom where it kills the spider is very funny.
Alejjo - Your design is very simple but I like it. I think it could be stronger with some more work or added detail to it's body. When you look at it as a whole it is very pleasing but as you focus in it loses appeal.
Baltasar_Ali - So is it cutting the grass to flush out the prey? Seems like a lot of energy to expend for little results. although I do like the idea of a Lawn Mower Fly. I guess I am just expecting it to eat the grass it is cutting. The fly is done well, I like your wings quite a bit. I feel like there should be a bigger blade for the cutting of the grass, as it is I don't see how it can cut such a level swatch of grass with those two little claws.
Eric Gerhard - I really think you were on target with what this COW was supposed to be about. The fly isn't metallic but has a very appropriate buggy color. Also it makes me want to wince away from the impending strike. The fly is done very well. The wings could be done a bit better. Maybe less color. A good and strong entry.
Woodlandwalker - Very cool concept. I can imagine hating something like this. The fly could have been a bit stronger. The body seems a bit muddy. Oh, and I have to ask, why three blades?
ZonE - I like the upper bits of the fly but the tail is a bit confusing. I have to really look hard to be able to see what is going on. It also doesn't seem very sharp. I would like to see these swarming around someone, fun fun.
Antne - Brutal! I don't know if there is more to say. It was drone very nicely. It is exactly what it is. It seems to be something from another world come to this place to do horrible things. Fiendish!
El_Khan - I don't buy that it can fly, but who says it has to fly. This seems to be a very aggressive ground predator with vestigial wings left over from its previous evolutionary state. Good design and not something I would wanna meet.
davi - you did a very good job design wise and this was put together very skillfully. That said, it is very messed up. Very neat and original concept. I wonder who it has murdered to make it want to end it all.
Tommoy - That thing doesn't get to come anywhere near my face. Nice design. I like the head quite a bit. The wings are confusing. It just seems to have extra wing. If I didn't know it was a razor fly or had read the concept then I would have known their purpose.
Kevzip - I like how this fly doesn't seem aggressive. This topic cause a lean toward aggressive designs. This is a very calm and actually caring type of creature. The design is very neat. The wings seem a bit like mouse ears or those hoops that you use to do needle point with cheese cloth stretched across it. I want to see the baby flies.
Leosdel - Very very nice. Lots of energy. Well drawn. very fun comic showing why it gets the name. Seems like it would be more of a buzzsaw fly.
ravenslayer - Design seems off. I don't see it as being a very effective way of defending itself. Also, what stinger? The picture of the fly is not very strong either, although I like the idea of the leaf like wings they should have been worked up differently. Your whole piece was presented well.
whiteeeeeee - Very pretty design.
edujante - Fun and different concept. I want to go, but why a giant razor legged fly? But at the same time I am thinking those wacky mad scientists. I enjoy the way you worked this piece. plenty of energy and decidedly big monsterish.
jchery - Huh, pretty cool. I like the way you presented the concept. I enjoy works that are set to one side and are balanced by large areas of negative space. I like the wings, they seem like they are in constant motion. I don't fully see how the creatures saw actually works, or why it has poison darts, or really where those darts come from. But it is a very curious design and I want to spend time looking at it and trying to figure it out.
Michael Jaecks - Interesting concept. Very nasty creatures. I like the eyes and the antenna.
Eriboss - Very neat picture. Good colors and very gritty.
RabbitHole - It looks a bit tacked together. I like the eyes and I think what you were trying to do with the fur is neat but not totally effective.
-Food]- - You picture is pretty. It looks like a outer space super fly, that might be because of the background colors.
Jasmin - The body seems a bit confused and not too well put together. The scale drawing looks better then the close up.
Kreator - This looks like type of god of chaos. Very nice picture. It only has the faintest resemblance to any fly and though it has wings it is hard to see it as a flying creature. Very violent looking.
t0eknee - They act kind of like a bullet. Interesting concept. I like the eyes, very good. Abdomen is kind weird and hard to figure out. Background is also distracting.
electric goat - I love the second set of eyes on the legs. Your colors are very bright and cool. The background color seems a bit overpowering though. What purpose do the razors serve?
eraserfoot - Pretty colors. Very clean looking design. Good solid design.
ENBE - interesting concept and design.
xgabo - This was probably the coolest concept/story. The design is also very strong. It seeks like a fast and aggressive predator. I like the way the wings have developed. Good stuff.
scorge - I like the leaves on the legs. Nice design.
infinitemonkey - nice concept and nice design. your fly has a very cool style too it.

I Finally chose Cloister's Chelicon/razor fly. I really liked the history/concept as well as the creature itself. I have to say that Leosdel, whiteeeeeee, and Kreator had me going round and round trying to decide which one to choose. They also had some beautifully rendered creatures. Ok, and one more I have to mention is JCai's entry. Very nasty/nice concept of your little beasties. All in all, a collection of awesome entries and once again this place is inspiring me to get to work creating!

Oh, you mean I got my ass kicked? Nah, people just vote crazy... My fly Kicked ass (It uses that winning kind of fly for toothpicks)! ;)
My personal best was actually for the puppeteer CHOW a couple of weeks ago, halfassed render and still got me 5 votes. ;)
