I don't understand all this protest against Dru Blair. He's been around for a long time. I think what's confusing people is the BIG picture on that link, the close up, is the photograph. I think it's confusing which is the painting and which is the photograph on that link.

Oh, I'm sure it's real. As it's been said, though, I don't really see the purpose in copying a photograph with an airbrush and ending up with something that looks identical.

Well thanks for the clarification. Does it matter? Well since I posted it I guess it matters to me because I wanted an answer. Which I got! Thanks Melancholie. I wasn't making any statements about the purpose of copying a photograph with such high fidelity.

My question was serious. Does it really matter to any of us if someone is either spending absurd amounts of time being a human xerox machine, or pretending to be spending absurd amounts of time being a human xerox machine? In the first case, the artist is burning his time doing something that he enjoys and which (judging by the time he spends) may not bring him a decent income. In the second case, he may be pulling the wool over the eyes of a few folks, but he likely isn’t making any money doing so, and he isn’t impacting our ability to have fun or make money. In either case he is aiming for some momentary glory, which is worth its weight in smoke.

As far as technique goes this is extrodinary. But after that everything else falls short. It's just too.....plastic too me.

The caption under the detail makes it pretty clear that it's not the ref but the painting (real or faked, I'm staying out of that).

Yeah... your right. Perhaps because it's a reproduction of a reproduction that we're look at, it'll be too hard to distinguish photo of art from reproduction of photo reference (did that make sense?).

I gotta agree with Seedling's last post. That's about how I see it.

with reading anything other have said i will say fake using an image brush .
you zoom in on the eyes and you see the studeo lights? come on...with an air brush?

the guy says he took around 70 hours to complete it. i call bull, since he had almost a majority of it looking "photorealistic" in the first 3.5 hours. what would he have done for the remainder of that time? sourced pigments from rare alpine flower petals, crushed between female-sumo wrestlers folds of skin and mixed with the tears of conjoined twins?

The real problem I have with this page is the notion that there is an entire magazine dedicated solely to airbrush art.
