Art portfolio questions

I'm reasearching industry related art jobs for a class, and I had a few questions.

How does one prepare their portfolio when applying for a job?
since they ask for samples of ones work beforehand.

and what are recommended "tols of the trade" for developing artists who are looking towards having industry related jobs in the future?

First off, you need to explain "industry-related." As far as I know, there are at least three different types of industry jobs: Fine arts, illustration, and design. For each type, there is a different protocol. I am more familiar with the fine arts presentation:
1. Always have a professional looking website, complete with business cards and a logo. If possible, its good to turn yourself into a company, if not legally at least on paper.
2. Have a series or body of work presentable to the client. If the client is a gallery (as most fine arts presentations are) bring a professional portfolio containing prints of your work, and if possible, bring actual paintings/drawings/ sculpture/installation shots whatever.

Anyone else wanna comment? I'm just a recent grad, I'm not that versed in professionalism, besides what I've learned from the career center at school :)

Just make 150 ~ 500 finished, fulled resolved peices and then cherry pick the best 10 or 15. Make color copies, stick on website and black folder with proper MLA format and your good to go!
