Arn J.
hmmm....i fixed your image in the poll, but i think the one before was much stronger, especially technical-wise...well whatever ;)

does the creature have to create its own slime or can it be applied via a tube aka astro glide?Own slime...if it would be slime coming from "outside" you could do any creature which is temporarily slimed and call it a slimy creature...

and as for the cliffs are they needed in the final piece?not necessarily, if the idea or image carries the cliff aspect...

Hmmm, the creature I want to make would jump out of the cliff itself, would that be allowed??Well...would be still a Slimy Cliff Jumper, so i think it's ok ;)

Kind of hard to jump if it's slimey...like...slimey as in the slime has to come off of it? Or slimey like...a frog secreting poisons?Slimy as a slimy creature like a jellyfish, frog, slug etc

Huh, my first C.O.W....
It was the only thing that came in my head. It can jump and it's very slimy.

Concept: Patupatu is a weird plant, that prefers to live at the cliffy seashores of Ramerian IV. But being a plant Patupatu can move (jump) with the help of it's spiral "leg". Slime of Patupatu contains a kind of neurotoxin but it doesn't always save Patupatu from it's natural ememies.

Now it got darker dark under it's "head" and etc. :needle:

Along the cliffs of Nasturno, a region seemingly bereft of life, exists the helio-plankton "Armisthriosia". Little more than a helium filled mucous sac of chlorophyl, the Armisthriosia is the basis for the entire food chain. In Nasturno the only other species, known to science, is the "Tenuis oracado". More commonly known as the Slimy cliff jumper.

In it's larvael form the Oracado launches itself from ledges through a sort of jet nozzle. It uses this method of "jumping" to reach the floating Helioplankton blobs.

Unique in nature the Slimy Cliff Jumper, in adult form, subsists entirely on it's larvea. The Oracado is a cannibal. No one is quite sure how this came to be, but it does guarantee that the species can never become too successful. Each generation eating the next.

I was really impressed with Jakkas's image last COW and wanted to try that sort of work flow. I am just at thumbnail stage and I've settled on one that I like so I'm do a mono tone high res sketch to test. I started to detail the bottom right sketch which is the creature I liked the most. Amphibian in some ways to give me the slime and the powerful frog-like back legs for jumping. I'll add some species detail next post.

COMMON NAMES:
Slimy Cliff Jumper/Mountain MudPuppy/Arjaniann Mountain Frog.
Family
PROTEIDAE
Scientific name:
Necturus Slijmerig

SPECIES INFO: The Arjanian Mountain Frog is a rare amphibian situated near the top of the `endangered: most at risk` list. Found only in one small mountain range this species is on the brink of extinction. Being an amphibian the `Mountain MudPuppy` as it is sometimes know needs access to water on a daily basis and suffers huge population casualties in extreme dry spells. Its water source is usually small puddles that collect in crevices and cracks high up on rugged cliff faces. As water is so scarce at these higher altitudes the Species has evolved a way to produce its eggs in a water filled sac which it attaches to the cliff faces. The male, unusually for amphibians, stays with the egg sac until the worm like tadpoles emerge. These tadpoles secrete a slime that allows them to stick to the cliff face and they slowly radiate out from the parents location until they find a bare patch of cliff within reach of a water source to set up home.

The adult feeding method is unique. They attach themselves to the cliff face with their large, suckered rear feet. Here they sit and wait for passing birds or flying insects which they lunge at as they pass by. Their large feet, firmly anchored to the rock prevent them from falling with their prey in their mouth.

For once, I'm trying not to overdo the whole thing... looking okay for now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v72/MusashiSama/slimy.png
Slimy Cliff Jumpers, also called Sea Frogtopi, are evolved from octopi and are able to climb up rocky cliffs with their powerful tentacles. The slime prevents the skin from drying. Females lay eggs several times a year, the problem is that Jumpers eggs are fish's favorite food. That's why they climb up cliffs erected above the sea. Once eggs are laid off, males join them and fertilize the nests.
To get back in the sea, it's much easier: they just jump off the edge, extending their membranous fins and tentacles to slow down the fall. Birds won't be able to eat the eggs because the slime left all around dry quickly, becoming a very powerful glue, animals stepping in the slime would never be able to get off.
Little known fact: Slimy Cliff Jumpers climb the highest cliffs so that the waves won't reach the eggs: indeed, once back in water, the natural glue dissolves and makes them little slimier than your average frog. Contact with salty water would cancels the protective slime.

JakkaS Great ideas. Thanks. I went with the chin-fin idea and I like the way that turned out. I am messing with the eyes now but I can't get it to look convincing yet. I need to do more amphibian research I think. I didn't add claws for a reason. The ends of the toes were supposed to look like suckers that it used to attach itself to the rock with. I think I need to make each toe bone thinner so the ends look more bulbous and maybe more specular highlights

Amphibious creatures that is able to breathe in land and water. In order to prevent from drying out by the hot morning sun, these creatures only comes out in the night. They climb up the steep cliffs by the coast to the only place that they can feed. As they are slow creatures, they take half the night to reach the destination. The slime on their body can only last them 15hrs before drying out. They feed the whole night until morning before the sun rises. When the day breaks, they will jump off the cliffs back to the sea to rest and to replace their body fluids to generate their slime.

Thnx hammajamma :)

Ok, my comments / crits / etc.

Wasker - I like where you're going with it so far, just the layers on layers is a really neat efefct by itself. Cant wait to see more.
zweiDee - Image isn't loading for me :(
Charanty - I think you could push the values just a little more; make the dark darker under the "head," inside the "twirls," etc. I like the jewel-like eyes
jchery - I like the image, but is the creature really "jumping?" Seems more like it's flying, but then again you might just reitterate in your description. :)
hammajamma - I love the cannibalism concept, & I particularly love the face of the adult. :)
southern - detailing is just awesome~ I think my favorite part are the pattern on it's back / legs, & the eye. I think the finger tips could be detailed a lot more though [ the way it's toes are detailed, slimy with intense shading ]
Dark Musashi - I like the concept, I think, however, you should try and make your creature "pop" more from the background. :)
Arn J. - In all honesty, I think your piece[s lol] for silver tooth were a lot higher quality. The second image I think matches the "slimy" theme well though :)
yoitisi - I love the detail you put into your sketches, can't wait to see the finished colored version.
JakkaS - I absolutely love the thumbs, inspiring as always. I think the creature your choosing to use [ 2nd image ] is really...cute lol. Can't wait to see the final.
gnahz - I love the expression on his face. I just thing you could really make the last few legs a little more detailed to match the front legs. They don't look nearly as slimy as the front of the creature, also increasing the darkness between each leg could really make them pop more. :)

That was tiring lol. So many good works though, can't wait to see everything once it's all finished :)~

Kriechgen GE-BO 0019-04. The kriechgen can be found in deserts with a mountainous terrain. They have a thin layer of slime that covers most of their body. The slime helps control the kriechgen's body temperature, as the animal is cold-blooded the slime absorbs heat when in the light and preserves it while in the cold. The slime also acts as a natural camouflage while the kriechgen attacks its prey. As most of its prey see through thermo-receptors, the slime mimics the surrounding temperature to hide itself while attacking. The kriechgen mostly live cliffside where they watch for their prey, consisting mostly of smaller flying reptiles, and when spotted, the kriechgen jumps off the cliff towards the animal. While airborne the kriechgen's wings, while usually covered in a chittinous shell, spread out so that the kriechgen can glide to its intended prey.

The Bering Sea Cliff Jumper is a carnivorous creature found only on the most remote cliff areas in the Bering Sea island chain. It is essentiallyl the missing link between the mollusk and land-dwelling animals. It has the ability to hunt in the frigid waters below, or attack sea bird nests high in the bluffs overlooking the ocean. It is able to survive on land because of the high humidity level in the air. It usually sleeps in the sea caves that dot the shore. The shell that coats it's back is for defense, as there are large predatory birds that hunt Cliff Jumpers. The spikes on it's shell excrete a kind of nerve gas when the Cliff Jumper is threatened. It has two sets of eyes that are very sensitive to motion. The creature itself is very light, and can move and jump very swiftly across cliffs.

North American Gremlox

The Gremlox is known for it's curious mating habits. Durring mating season the males approach the larger females in groups and perform a mating dance. The female chooses her favorite one and takes him into her den. After mating the female sprays a thick green fluid from her genitals. For some reason this causes the males to begin running around in a wild frenzy- though no one knows why, since the fluid is harmless. Most of them seem to head for nearby cliffs where they "commit suicide" throwing themselves over the brink.

any ideas before i get into it?
this is my first painting using my new wacom tablet :D.

and the idea for this thing is that the two front (arms?) are coated with a slimy substance which allows them to stick to almost anything and the back legs are used to launch it off the cliff at prey (mainly small insects) which it catches with its tongue which is constantly hanging out of its mouth.
:)

oh and i know it looks kind of weird but picture it on the face of a rock just stuck there.

Ok, here is my COW (I hope it is slimy enough ;) ) :

Taar'ari
On the planet Sarenbar we can meet lots of strange animals. One of them is Taar'ari, the big red bird. Because of some reason in the process of evolution creature lost its wings, but it has incredibly strong legs to jump on cliffs where it makes nests. The cliffs and giant rocks near them are safe places where predators can't get Taar'ari and its eggs. The feathers of this bird are covered by a slimy mucus which helps them to swim very fast (Taar'ari hunts in the sea for small fish), mucus also gives this animal a chance to get away from the jaws of predator. Everywhere on the planet where you can find cliffs you will meet Taar'ari, it is a very common creature.

The cliff jumper is an odd little bird, coated with a fine layer of slime (which is their unique sort of sweat). They live and hunt their entire life around one specific area, the place where they hatched.
The slime acts as a lubricant when it's hunting or being hunted. In other words this little bird is a slippery bugger!

ohhhhkaaay...
this guy is tiny, say about 2 inches max, and uses the slime that is produced on it's "hands" and feet to cling to cliffs tween it's jumps. the slime is also a kind of defensive mechanism, 'cause it's not only icky in general to encounter, but it also tastes lousy.

Glad I could get in on this one. Coming up with a slimy creature that lives on an open place like a cliff was challenging for me. This is my 'final', unless I jump in and update it one more time before the deadline, lol.

The Atlas Spider is a gargantuan, insectile beast that lives in dusty canyons. Because of its uneven legs, it it uncomfortable walking and travels the canyons in great jumps. It secretes a nourishing mucus that lubricates its joints and sustains it during dry spells. The sludge left behind as it leaps from crag to crag hardens, toughening so much that it becomes part of the rock, driving the peaks higher and higher. Some of the creatures live so long that their edifices pierce the clouds and seem to hold up the sky, giving the species its name.

"The Slimy Cliff Jumper-
The Slimy Cliff Jumper is a species thought impossible to exist.
A fungae species capable of self propelling at high speeds.
As it seems, the 'species' has some form of intelligence, as it propells itself away from danger and into the oceans as they let go of their spores before they die.
The Jumper looks like a large mushroom, with semitransluscent slime in psychedelic colours covering it's 'head'."

Chippa: a creature whose favorite pastime is to jump from cliff to cliff, searching for their one true love. It is most unfortunate for these creatures, for a single male is born once every fifty years. The females have a general life span of twenty years, so they can be quite agitated by age twelve. Their entire bodies are covered from head to two in an "attractive" slime. The slimiest female has a better chance of winning the male's affections - that is if they find one another. They would probably be considered one of the most agile transportation beasts if they weren't so...sticky.

hi guys,

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b103/DarkArtist3/rezcow86edgar.png

this little critter was made for jumping off of cliffs. he enjoys long romantic walks on the beach, candle lit dinners, and most of all jumping off of cliffs.

his double ears give him excellent hearing, his tail helps for landing balance, the head frills help in guiding direction in the air, he has long flaps of skin under his arms, which he spreads when he is at his highest point in the jump.

It took me a bit longer than I anticipated so there's no fancy background or stuff. Might play around with it a bit more if Fozzy doesn't close early but this is the final for now. I'm quite pleased with it at the moment, although theres still a lot to improve :)

Edit: Changed a few small thing and added a sort of background :P

The Tridoon

This frog-like creature lives on cliffs in tropical regions. Since it is cold-blooded, it lays most of the day warming in the sun high up on the cliffs. It is most famous however for its way of fishing: it jumps off the top of a cliff, paddles through the air with its webbed claws to gain more distance, then it folds up its body (much like pelikans do) to reduce the force of impact when it plunges into the ocean amidst a shoal of fish. With its long yaw lined with many pointy teeth it has little trouble to kill and hold on to its prey. With its strong limbs it swims back to climb on the cliff again to devour its prey.
The slime that covers its body helps to isolate against the cold of the oceanwaters and also helps reduce the drag while swimming. It is slightly poisonous. The Tridoon has little natural enemies other than sharks.

The Offigrun

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/neorepto/OffigrunjaecksCOW.jpg

Planet Boolix has some of the most dramatic and uneven topography of any planet yet encountered. Impossible bridges of stone, towering spires of rock, yawning canyons pockmark its face. The planet's terrain is so uneven locally that 80% of the animal life is avian or aerial in some fashion. The other 20% of land-bound creatures have evolved very curious adaptations geared toward catching a flying target.

The offigrun is one such animal, frog-like and carnivorous. Four extra ribs extend from the spine upwards from its body. Between them, the offigrun suspends a viscous, slimy web of saliva, generated by its long prehensile tongue. From cliff to cliff and spire to spire, the offigrun jumps,, catching birds, bugs and other airborne prey in the strong, sticky net. After lunch is caught, the offigrun comes to rest on a ledge and plucks the quarry off the web with its long, sticky tongue.
