Hey! :)
ok.. I've made a list of recommendations based on what I thought was good for this round.
One thing, I noticed lots of Non modern entries.. too many leaning towards fantasy or futuristic. And not attempting to make the character hot/sexy/cute/lala. And lots of entries not finished or without a lot of effort into them.. sadly, I've been quite blunt with this list.. :( sorry..
didn't make to poll list
hurricane - not finished! :)
pale rider - not finished
filip - kinda like this, but you didn't finish it..... :(
gtgauvin - I think this has bad lighting.. would be nice if he could work on the colours.. also anatomy too..
blu-girl - not finished!
Y.V. - not finished
monstertree - not finished
vigostar - not finished tho would have loved to have seen it done..
madhatter106 - not sure if that's sexy..and don't think it's quite modern too..

* I wish I had seen CHOW 69 before Wednesday. I'll finish this one if it kills me!!
* Had more time to think about this one, but about the usual amount of time to draw it.
* Doing the colorwork. Prisma colors and some acrylic paint. I can't wait untill I can get Photoshop, takes so long this way...

I was looking at my WIP, and found myself quite displeased with the composition ( though I'm sticking with the same basic concept). I think the pose is a little more interesting without obfuscating too many details. Moreover, it's a little more in line with what I've had in mind.
http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/25722.jpg
OK; all done. All told, the concept isn't quite hwere I'd like it to be. Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty pleased with it on a technical level, but I don't think I quite conveyed the mood I was going for with the overall character design ( frankly she looks more like a dominatrix than I'd like). That being said, I'm going to go ahead with a full redesign of the character, just as a matter of personal ambition. But for now, here's my entry.

http://www.glensportfolio.com/woodlandwalker_chow70_LRRH.jpg
The first blow from the axe was the woodsman’s…a large gash down the beast’s side and gut. With a yelp and a whirl of fur and fangs it turned about… just then from the gash spilled some of its last undigested meal. A hand could be seen with a ring, grandmother’s ring, something inside Red snapped at that moment. Although she was a small girl, she found a strength inside her she had never felt before…pushing aside the woodsman, taking up his axe for her own she began swinging wildly. The wounded wolf trying to get away as blow after blow landed on its bloodied body. The woodsman trying desperately to calm the girl careened back with a mortal wound to the neck. No more would this girl shy away from terror again… no this was the turning point… from now on the wolves of the world (those with and without fur) would have to fear her… yes no longer would she live in fear… the beast lie dead at her feet but something of the beast was now inside her. A gurgling woodsman lay in the corner…soaked in blood, his axe was now hers and she would take it up time and again.
Killing was a justified end to a means… and she meant to do some killing!

stage two and final (unless i tweak it again), trying to sculpt the volumes out of the dark with as few strokes as possible:
http://www.metrocast.net/~chipartist/ImagePost/masqueRedHood02.jpg
Red knows how to get the wolves howlin', oh yeah, she fills the house. We water the well, hell, we could piss in it and they'd never notice while she's on. She banks large, I tell ya, that basket of goodies is always topped. But she's a sweet kid, never runs with the wolves after hours, never takes the job home. To her Grandma. Really, her Grandma for gawdsake!

"Little" Red Riding Hood isn't so little anymore...pictured on a recent wolf hunt in Alberta, Canada, the new spokeswoman for the NRA stomped all over her Pro-Gun Control opponent on Hannity & Colmes last Sunday: "I wear this red hood to remind me of the awful day I discovered my grandmother slain by a wolf...if my grandmother had had a gun, she would still be here today! Every citizen needs to exercise their right to bear arms to protect themselves from wildlife predators...and human predators as well! Do you think we'd have so many rapes in this country if every rape victim had pointed a snub-nosed .38 cal in their attackers face? I don't think so!"

hello everyone... this is my 2nd attempt to participate CHOW (the 1st one i even didn't finished it :( ) so this is my perception about modern day red riding hood:
after the incident with the wolf and granny, Red riding hood realizes that luck won't come twice, hunters won't there every time she needed help in danger, she knows that she have to be able to protect herself, so she learn many kinds of martial arts, and seeks the path of power, so she can protect herself anytime, and even maybe protect other people.
and this is my final piece:

What's a young college student with a hefty tuition to do? Why, pick up a night job, of course. Clad in her signature red hoodie, she hits the streets once a month as a freelance werewolf hunter. Sure, the mortality rate for her line of work is pretty high, but so's the payscale. A good thing too, because genuine silver bullets are a necessary business expense.

Red Riding Hood ran too the city. There she became addicted to her own wolves, herion and sex, turning tricks for johns that treat her little more then a piece of meat. She wonders if this life in the modern world is worth it after a few bills are thrown her way and before the drugs enter her blood. She wonders about ending it, but these wolves are of her own making and the darkness is not the hunter that will save her.
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/3589/redridinghoodcopyck4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
A little rushed at the end, the back ground, and I wanted to make the road way filled with her own wanted addictions, just didn't have the time.

hi all,
Final
Modern Day Red Riding Hood
After the incident years ago involving the wolf and her grandma, red owes her life to one man, the hunter. He saved them both from death. Time has passed since then, and sadly her grandma has died, and following that the hunter became ill and also has passed away. But red decided to continue his legacy of protecting the local villages from the wolves in the forest. She hunts them down!!!

I'll try and get in on this one, maybe I can make up for my dire entry for the last CHow. Loads of great looking entries so far, I'm especially fond of the pieces by Hurricane and Meatsworthy ;)
Here's a wip. Having some problems with this but maybe some crits can sort me out? I was going to have Red swimming in the lake sorta splashing about, seems like everyone has gone for the wolf killer angle so I decided on her finally feeling safe in the woods...i dunno. My first problem is that the character would probably be too small to count as a character design as opposed to a scene.
Secondly I'm not loving the colours. I'm thinking of adding more darks to up the contrast? It just isn't feeling rich enough.I could do with a second opinion though.
Anyway, i'll stop going on and show the damn image already.

Some great stuff going on. This is my first time into the chow, here's where I'm at so far,
I'm probably going to keep the coloring pretty graphic. The wolf may be just a silhouette shape for Red to contrast against too, I might change his posture too. We'll find out when I get there.
Keep up the good work all.
Also, maybe I missed the memo but did ca disable image hosting? Just wondering. Peace!

Some very good entries.
FridayEve, impressive use of colors. I second prepsage for the BG.
heartofnation, very nice brush work. I have no words.

Red was on her way back to the crib when a couple of The Wolves descended on her. She had to defend her flower chain and mack it back to grandma's. Can't get merked in the street.
To be honest, I get kinda sick of all the annorexic strippers that show up in a topic like this, so I shot for an image we don't see often enough: A young, strong, black woman.

Well this is my first digital painting other than a quick sketch a while back in the DSG. Realistically I'm not going to get it finished but I thought I'd put it up.
Theres some real quality work on this site. So far meatsworthy and naomifuls work are my favourites but everybody has got talent here.

There are some wonderful pieces coming through on this one! Gotta say I love Beastmaster Freds!
I've not really had a chance to do something finished, which is a shame as I love the idea. Here are a few of my doodles. I kept thinking of the James Thurber version of Little Red Riding Hood:
The Little Girl and the Wolf
by James Thurber
One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food. "Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was. So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood.
When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.
(Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.)

Until recently Rose McCowl thought she had a pretty sweet gig, driving around picking up ‘occult’ objects for her grandmother’s collection: Hi, Mr. Tin-Foil-Hat-Man, here’s the money, where’s the bric-a-brac? Thank you, Mr. Tin-Foil-Hat-Man, have a nice day! All well and good… but recently a certain Mr. Wolfe has been trailing her, sometimes even beating her to the pick-up. Then there’re all the accidents, other collectors hit by lorries in the street, falling down staircases, even disappearing. Rose can’t shake the feeling that somehow it’s all wrapped up with this Mr. Wolfe.

Concept for the fairytale in an modern set . Replacing the woods with a big city. Like in the fairytale she is more a girl than a woman.
p.s. Also she could be a messenger in a gigantic skyscraper .Carrying the packets from the lobby to the final office .Imaging a Superskyscraper almost like a little town, this could give a nice background for a story.

Anyway, this isn't finished, so I'm not officially going to submit it for "judging" but want to start getting more involved in the community. I hope no one is offended by her PETA t-shirt. Hey everyone, first of all really awsome round! nice work all around.
:)
I am feeling a tiny bit guilty for not recommending so many entries into the poll, trust me! I would love to have done so but frankly lots of entries were quite not finished and not very well thought out. If your didn't make it to the poll, it's mainly because you've not finished it and left it at WIP, and/or that you've gone way off the brief. If it was way too futuristic or fantasy I didn't recommend it, unless it satisfied the other two requirements rather nicely. :x
So.. please don't feel bummed out if it's not on the poll.. :O
My vote goes to Meatsworthy and endtroid for all round awsome work.
right behind was naomiful, c@c, bluefooted (my initial idea was just that.. oriental chick with wolf shirt! :)), krunner & emily g.
:)
[EDIT]
I am pretty sure I recommened edujante to be included.. it may have been overlooked.. or something.. :(
oh and as for hurri, I talked to him about his entry before letting oblio know, but good to see him on the poll nonetheless.

Friday Eve and Meatsworthy stood out to me. Execution for both was superb. Voted for Meat's entry because he seemed to push it more conceptually. It does seem like a modern day 'lil red riding hood. Except I wanted to see more of sexy as stated in the brief.

Dammit. I'll have to vote for about a million of you- this round was awesome.
I'm so glad I didn't get time to enter, I'd have been horribly embarrassed.
I think my favourites (for the criteria) were FridayEve, Manuel Calavera, Foofoo and Frostblade... but to get a better answer than that out of me you'll have to put a gun to my head.
Some of the other entries were beautiful too, but the "Red Riding Hood" part often seemed superfluous. I preferred to see people update the fairytale, rather than create a beautifully-drawn modern girl in a red top, then write a story to tie it in with the challenge.

Bumskee-
Bummer, man. Can't say I'm not disappointed I didn't make it. When I read "modern day" I interpreted that as revamp or re-imagine. I see many entries that could have easily been read as no less sci-fi/fantasy nor modern day. Not to mention I was going for a modern day werewolf hunter with a Ninja like quality. I guess that didn't come across in my design.
Having said that I doubt I would have stood a chance against some of the more amazing entries. I think I voted for maybe five different entries because comparing some of them is like compairing apples and oranges. Meatsworthy and Naomiful were probably my favorites but some of the others were pulled off equally well and were completely different in style, mood and theme.
I would love to hear what anybody else has to say about my piece. crits welcome...

Voted for Meat's entry because he seemed to push it more conceptually. It does seem like a modern day 'lil red riding hood. Except I wanted to see more of sexy as stated in the brief.
Agreed - while I love Meatsworthy's idea and execution, I'm not seeing the "sexy." Of course, the rejoinder to that will be "but sexy is open to interpretation." If that's the case, then the qualification of "sexy" is too much of a gray area; since it's not a yes/no, binary quality, where/what is the line?
Had someone drawn a sexy guy, would that have been eliminated because it's not sexy to the judge(s), if they're heterosexual? I'm just curious..."sexy" is such an intangible, ethereal, personal thing. Do future entries requiring "sexy" cater to those judging and their definition of sexy?
I guess this sort of thing peeves me - working in costumes in Hollywood, we get this sort of thing a lot ...you'll be sitting in a production meeting, and the producer or director or executive will turn to someone in the costume dpeartment, and say, "yeah and she's gotta be really really really SEXY!" Mmmmmmmkay. Depening on who's at the table, you can get seventeen different opinions of what that is and where to go with it...
Please don't read this as sour grapes...my sexy (or not, I suppose) non-modern satanic nun didn't make it to poll, I'm fine with that...she ended up looking a bit too Glenn Close in my book. (Crying, "Big Chill" Glenn Close and not "Fatal Attraction" Glenn Close!) I could debate the validity of moderness of a Church of Satan style satanic nun, but defer to the judges on that point...but I'm sure someone with a nun fetish would certainly find her sexy...see here (http://community.livejournal.com/nun_fetish/profile) and here (http://www.amazon.com/Anticristo-Steven-Fentone/dp/1903254027/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0313794-5837472?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1178600035&sr=8-1)....
Love all the entries...just wish some of them were sexier (to me) LOL ;) Great topic and great round, one and all :) Can't wait to see what this week's topic will be...

I really dont wanna moan and bitch about this - it's ridiculous and futile, however, I can't leave it without saying anything - you obviously dont object to simplistic, cartoony styles, but I think that the fact that you dismissed my entry as having bad anatomy, and a bad face is bias and unfair.

Sorry to see that I missed the poll. In my mind it was finished, and posted as such. I know I put a lot more detail into the face than some of the other areas, but I don't consider this as leaving it unfinished. Not bitching, but would like to know if I failed because of quality, in which case I can tighten things up next time, or because it was believed that I hadn't finished, despite comments to the contrary.

nuru, it seems to me like your piece looks like you have gone for a realistic style, rather than a comic style - so i think in those terms it may have not met the standard in a "real" style turn.

Oh, man! This is going to be a tough choice. Especially since Bumskee gave us such tight criteria with which to judge. So what's sexy and modern and Red Riding Hood.
Vahn: I disagree with you about the fantasy aspect. There's nothing in the prompt that excludes modern fantasy ala Charles deLint, etc, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood is certainly fantasy. Anyway, just a thought.
nuru: Good attitude! I actually really like your entry - I'd tend to think you were going more for a stylized pic rather than realism, based on that wolf.
Here's who I voted for:
c@s, for sure - the posing is great, as are the details on her jeans and hoodie.
lukavi - love the hips! And her beautiful doll face.
Naomiful - beautiful sketch and concept!
Propishus - Such great style! Love the storybook look to your entries - they're really fun - and her attitude.
cakeypigdog - Great, as usual ;)
Endtroid - Love the style, I think this is one of my favorites of yours!
Bumskee - She was right on the edge of the 'sexy'/ 'cute' border for me (which is tough anyway, because what the hell is sexy, anyway?), but I love the lines and draping so much as well as the graphic style, so I had to vote for it.
Meatsworthy - Another that wasn't exactly 'sexy', but it was such a nicely done entry that I had to include it.
dragon4lunch: Thanks! Very appreciated. Glad you checked my profile ;)

May 8th, 2007, 05:20 PM
so I picked 3, for my top picks... and this is why!
Meatsworthy~ because it *screams* originality, nothing more modern then search and rescue, uniforms on strong women are sexy, and overall AWESOME concept.
Oregano~ first impression was a modern day 'young adult' not too sure about sexy, but she is definately appealing... even though it is sketchy, it has a finished feel to it... I would hang this on my wall!
Tiegrob~ because it has the finished "concept" art feel to it... and i really like the idea behind it... the description was very good and the quality of work is consistently pleasing to look at.
It is a specification that the "FINALS" have a border with info, and so I didn't vote for any without the border (because it was a specification for the final), the majority didn't really seem modern to me, even though the quality was over all pretty good, with a few exceptions.
Good luck everyone!!

Tom garden - yup you're right, I got too emotional this morning, I think at some stage or other, it's easy to become emotional about artwork, because it's so visible, and so subjective(and scary!) however in this case Bumskee was right :)
My vote went to Bluefooted, because the colors, mood and textures were so rich. Thanks for the comment btw, my BA was in fashion, so I think I often fall back on some stylized bad habits I picked up in fashion illustration - no excuses though, I really need to badly work on my anatomy!
cheers guys :)

I limited myself to 3 votes, it was really tough deciding. My favourite is Form's, just on the strong composition and other-worldy aspect... I hope you go on to develop this one further. Bluefooted's piece is also lovely (and the sexiest), such a great amount of care put into it. Voted for Emily too, I'm quite envious at how realistic it reads.
Thanks for the interesting discussion on "sexy"... it's so frequently at the top of any brief for a female character/illustration. The search and rescue theme came from red's fairytale innocence, I wasn't confident enough to push sexy at the same time. That, and my figure drawing would hamper any such effort (teach me bumskee! :P).

At this time my fried brain could only reset the whole thing - if any other mistake is present - please let me know.
gotta run,

My personal favorite by far is Edujante´s piece since I just love that style and love that character but I thought Entdroid´s also stood out from the rest of our pieces so I voted for these two.
That being said there were a lot of entries I liked a lot and I´m impressed by a shitload of the entries in one way or another.

Edujante> Donīt worry about us losing votes because of your entry into the poll. The only right thing to do is what seems has happened, all of the votes going back to 0 and the voting starting over. You should get the fair chance all of us got (especially since you got such a kick ass piece that has the chance to take home the victory if given the shot). I do think some people could get confused over this though and the people who has already cast their vote might not be voting again.
Plus a strange thing, when a piece gets a vote now if you look in the list over who has voted for it all of the original voters shows up but those who still stand at 0 in the new voting donīt get a list over who voted for them before (just a bit weird).

good point, Fred, i was wondering what the case was. and there may be some who won't check to see what's up if they've already voted, and may not re-vote. can Oblio add one vote to all submissions, so the list can show up again for everyone who had previous votes? i don't think it'd make a diff in the final poll totals, and it's a way to insure that the original votes get preserved (if not actually counted).

poll shows interesting errors in how many votes were done for each entry... for example when it was voted three it shows just one vote for masque...

Oblio, many thanks for taking the time to re-do the poll, it's gotta be a pain dealing with time changes and work stress as well as this.
unfortunately, i don't see meatsworthy's pic among the main image posts -- am i missing something? he's in the poll with a thumbnail, but i can't see it in the thread.
not a complaint, just an observation.

my vote went to naomiful, just a great drawing/painting and the textures are great. really dig the hood design.
adi-very cool, the SS uniform is a little creepy though, but i like the fact that the hood is green with bits of red, and the piece is very nicely painted.
tom garden-great entry, you've really been progressing as an artist and it's nice to see your commitment paying off. keep on.
meatsworthy-great painting man
fridayeve-very, very nice form, lighting, values, and textures. a great painting but not much concepting happening here.
edujante-i'd buy this if it were a poster. would make a great promotional piece. send me a postcard and i'll put it on my corkboard!
antne-really love the sketches/thumbs.
entroid-cool as beetle under a mushroom, but smoking? bad, bad, bad...;)
flipmcgee-awesome illo!
great work all.
sayot!
