* I wish I had seen CHOW 69 before Wednesday. I'll finish this one if it kills me!!

* Had more time to think about this one, but about the usual amount of time to draw it.

* Doing the colorwork. Prisma colors and some acrylic paint. I can't wait untill I can get Photoshop, takes so long this way...

I killed my piece. I dont think it qualifies as a valid character concept. Its more of a nude figure study. That's the reason... well, that and I forgot to work this week.
I will rejoin the challenge if I get an actual character idea rather than defaulting to rendering another figure study.

bumskee
April 30th, 2007, 07:34 PM
junon, well it's quite open to interpretation I think, and there's so many ways a person can be "sexy" and like penumbra said. :)

penumbra, I would have assumed "red riding hood" would have been seen as "little red riding hood" fairytale but in modern days. And sexy as in to say she's grown up from a innocent kid, that's why "little" is missing from the topic. "Modern" as in like present.

Sorry for not making it clear, but like with any other ChOW, it's open to your interpretation. :)

Matt, :P you cow..

bumskee-Thanks for responding. Its a great topic, I was just having some fun with the possible permutations of the description. I like to twist things a bit.
For example: Little Red Riding Hood, psychologically scarred by the animalistic murder of her Grandmother, grows into a very seductive serial killer who preys on lecherous con men(wolves in sheeps clothing).
She dips the cowl of her cloak in the blood of her victims. On the street she becomes known as "The Red Death".
By the way, your work in the "Hyde" and "Death's Horse" threads was beautifully handled. I admire your ability to draw sensitivity and real expression out of your characters.

Penumbra, I gotta say, I love the way you think (as well as the artwork you produce). I read this and I was thinking kinda boring topic, not thinking outside the box, but after reading your posts, I got kinda of excited about the possibilities that you could work with if you just think out of the box.

I'm in.

April 30th, 2007, 08:19 PM
Penumbra, :) well that actually sounds really good, I am really shabby with putting words to my thoughts.. hah! you've put a nice twist to it! would be nice to see you go on with that idea.
"red death" is a nice touch.

thanks for the kind words!

Scotwith1T- Thanks, about the thinking and the artwork. I am really striving to educate myself and broaden the way I concieve ideas both artistically and in thought process. CA is already making an impact on me in that respect.
bumskee-Thanks, I think I am leaning in that direction, so thats probably what I will try and develope. You are going to participate as well though, right?
About putting words to your thoughts...well, you can certainly put images to your thoughts. I just talk alot:)

I was looking at my WIP, and found myself quite displeased with the composition ( though I'm sticking with the same basic concept). I think the pose is a little more interesting without obfuscating too many details. Moreover, it's a little more in line with what I've had in mind.

http://community.conceptart.org/gallery/I/2005/01/01/25722.jpg

OK; all done. All told, the concept isn't quite hwere I'd like it to be. Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty pleased with it on a technical level, but I don't think I quite conveyed the mood I was going for with the overall character design ( frankly she looks more like a dominatrix than I'd like). That being said, I'm going to go ahead with a full redesign of the character, just as a matter of personal ambition. But for now, here's my entry.

The first blow from the axe was the woodsman’s…a large gash down the beast’s side and gut. With a yelp and a whirl of fur and fangs it turned about… just then from the gash spilled some of its last undigested meal. A hand could be seen with a ring, grandmother’s ring, something inside Red snapped at that moment. Although she was a small girl, she found a strength inside her she had never felt before…pushing aside the woodsman, taking up his axe for her own she began swinging wildly. The wounded wolf trying to get away as blow after blow landed on its bloodied body. The woodsman trying desperately to calm the girl careened back with a mortal wound to the neck. No more would this girl shy away from terror again… no this was the turning point… from now on the wolves of the world (those with and without fur) would have to fear her… yes no longer would she live in fear… the beast lie dead at her feet but something of the beast was now inside her. A gurgling woodsman lay in the corner…soaked in blood, his axe was now hers and she would take it up time and again.
Killing was a justified end to a means… and she meant to do some killing!

stage two and final (unless i tweak it again), trying to sculpt the volumes out of the dark with as few strokes as possible:

http://www.metrocast.net/~chipartist/ImagePost/masqueRedHood02.jpg

Red knows how to get the wolves howlin', oh yeah, she fills the house. We water the well, hell, we could piss in it and they'd never notice while she's on. She banks large, I tell ya, that basket of goodies is always topped. But she's a sweet kid, never runs with the wolves after hours, never takes the job home. To her Grandma. Really, her Grandma for gawdsake!

"Little" Red Riding Hood isn't so little anymore...pictured on a recent wolf hunt in Alberta, Canada, the new spokeswoman for the NRA stomped all over her Pro-Gun Control opponent on Hannity & Colmes last Sunday: "I wear this red hood to remind me of the awful day I discovered my grandmother slain by a wolf...if my grandmother had had a gun, she would still be here today! Every citizen needs to exercise their right to bear arms to protect themselves from wildlife predators...and human predators as well! Do you think we'd have so many rapes in this country if every rape victim had pointed a snub-nosed .38 cal in their attackers face? I don't think so!"

Damn, I love this topic! I only hope I can come up with something...trying to figure out a spin or gimmick on this to make sure it's unique...in the meantime, here's that 1926 hit by W.M. Randolph, "How Could Red Riding Hood?"

When we were young, yet old enough for us to understand,
We all believed in faeries, and hoped in Faerie Land.
But the modern child is running wild,
And wants to know too much.
He's never understood about Red Riding Hood.

How could Red Riding Hood
Have been so very good
And still keep the wolf from the door?

Father and mother? She had none.
So where in the hell did the money come from?
Please let me ask it, who filled her basket?
The story books? They never tell.
They say she found a great big wolf in granny's bed,
And he had a big sun bonnet pulled down over his head.
But you know and I know what she must have found instead!
How could Red Riding Hood
Have been so very good,
And still keep the wolf from the door?

Why was she dressed up in that bright flaming red?
Was she expecting to knock someone dead?
Why did she ramble, she knew it was a gamble?
She was out in the woods for no good.
They say she was a maid most discreet.
No doubt about it, she must have been sweet.
But you know and I know that even sweet girls must eat!
How could Red Riding Hood
Have been so very good,
And still keep the wolf from the door?

You can find the Janet Klein cover of this at CD Baby (http://cdbaby.com/cd/kleinj4), track 4...

hello everyone... this is my 2nd attempt to participate CHOW (the 1st one i even didn't finished it :( ) so this is my perception about modern day red riding hood:

after the incident with the wolf and granny, Red riding hood realizes that luck won't come twice, hunters won't there every time she needed help in danger, she knows that she have to be able to protect herself, so she learn many kinds of martial arts, and seeks the path of power, so she can protect herself anytime, and even maybe protect other people.

and this is my final piece:

What's a young college student with a hefty tuition to do? Why, pick up a night job, of course. Clad in her signature red hoodie, she hits the streets once a month as a freelance werewolf hunter. Sure, the mortality rate for her line of work is pretty high, but so's the payscale. A good thing too, because genuine silver bullets are a necessary business expense.

Red Riding Hood ran too the city. There she became addicted to her own wolves, herion and sex, turning tricks for johns that treat her little more then a piece of meat. She wonders if this life in the modern world is worth it after a few bills are thrown her way and before the drugs enter her blood. She wonders about ending it, but these wolves are of her own making and the darkness is not the hunter that will save her.

Final
Modern Day Red Riding Hood
After the incident years ago involving the wolf and her grandma, red owes her life to one man, the hunter. He saved them both from death. Time has passed since then, and sadly her grandma has died, and following that the hunter became ill and also has passed away. But red decided to continue his legacy of protecting the local villages from the wolves in the forest. She hunts them down!!!

I'll try and get in on this one, maybe I can make up for my dire entry for the last CHow. Loads of great looking entries so far, I'm especially fond of the pieces by Hurricane and Meatsworthy ;)

Here's a wip. Having some problems with this but maybe some crits can sort me out? I was going to have Red swimming in the lake sorta splashing about, seems like everyone has gone for the wolf killer angle so I decided on her finally feeling safe in the woods...i dunno. My first problem is that the character would probably be too small to count as a character design as opposed to a scene.
Secondly I'm not loving the colours. I'm thinking of adding more darks to up the contrast? It just isn't feeling rich enough.I could do with a second opinion though.
Anyway, i'll stop going on and show the damn image already.

Meatsworthy: Nice style! I really love the rendering. My only teeny tiny crit would be that the 'wolf's' facial anatomy looks wrong - a little too cartoony. But he's probably just a placeholder right now anyway, so feel free to ignore. And I wish I could see a little more of her face, but I kind of like that: I keep wanting her to turn around.

woodlandwalker: I'm assuming that's a her after reading your story. Her face is very mannish, but maybe that's what you were going for. The problem is she's very confusing looking: not quite a woman, and not quite a man in drag. Otherwise, I like the concept a lot.

Vigostar: It's a good start. I like the distortion of her torso and arms, but her way too small face and short legs are bugging me. They don't seem to follow the same style pattern.

Okay, guys. Stop posting such cool entries when my back is turned. Seriously, it's annoying. ;)

I killed my piece. I dont think it qualifies as a valid character concept. Its more of a nude figure study. That's the reason... well, that and I forgot to work this week.
I will rejoin the challenge if I get an actual character idea rather than defaulting to rendering another figure study.

Bummer Penumbra, I was really digging the piece. Hopefully you'll finish it and share it with the class, even if not in CHOW.

monstertree I'm pretty new here, so please feel free to disregard - your image does look rather more like an environment, than a scene for red - perhaps you could zoom in slightly closer to where she will be? I really like the concept you have of red finally feeling free an uninhibited in the woods - its a really original take :) About the colours, in order to get dramatic shadows and rich colours could you perhaps set it at dawn/dusk? Or even a forest in autumn colours, or a dark, pine forest? right now its looking almost tropical - I suppose red riding hood could be set in a tropical frest though... I guess the wolf could symbolize any predatory, threatening animal..(?) Anyway, dont give up on it - think it wil be a lovely piece when you finish it :)

bluefooted: Looking pretty sexy alright! I do think her asian eyes need careful attention. Right now they look kind of flat. I don't know for what kind of realism and detail you're going, but it probably wouldn't hurt to render the folds of fleshy underside of the hand, where she has her little finger bent. The foot could use improvement too. But you knew that.

Thanks for the crit! You're right - hopefully, when this is colored her eyes will look a little more natural. I think they may also be a tad big: I was going for a slightly cartoonish look (obviously with her freaky leg anatomy!), but I may tone it down a bit.

amer-nazri: It's a good start. I really like her face. Is she holding up an eye?

nuru

Thanks for the crit bluefooted - it is traditional, but i might be able to make it look slightly less wonky with some shading, it's meant to be tucked underneath her.

amer-nazri - I really like the soft feeling of your style, and the folds of her dress

Bluefooted - like naomiful - am another fangirl - I love your work. I like the romantic feeling of the torn stockings and that gorgeous bow

joey B - that wolf is brilliant! hes scary as, however the focus is definately on him, and not red, its a pity you don't have a bit more time to make her as expressive as your wolf :)

Some great stuff going on. This is my first time into the chow, here's where I'm at so far,
I'm probably going to keep the coloring pretty graphic. The wolf may be just a silhouette shape for Red to contrast against too, I might change his posture too. We'll find out when I get there.

Nice works here this round. C&C

nuru- great stylization. It might help to cool down that red that is behind her and sharing the same tone as her hood. There are anatomy issues as mentioned before: The right leg, left arm (armpit is rendered too hard). I'd go with a mosaic pattern on the floor myself. It would offset the decorative elements on her clothing quite well.

Joey-b- It's pretty well rendered, but The focus is on the wolf rather than Red. (I know...time's a bitch ain't it :P)

Edujante- Love it. Great style, render, colors. No need to show the eyes in my opinion, she's a 'hood'.

El Khan- Nice perspective. However, those wolves in the BG tend to be more distracting than complimenting the composition. Your colors seem a bit flat, though there are some nice subtleties. The crossbow is also pretty awkward. (not quite sure if it fits into 'modern')

FridayEve- Beautiful strokes and color. BG is a bit plain, it might do it well to give us some enivronmental texture.

Madhatter- Nice tones, but the anatomy does need work.

Greenjack- It might help to pull some harder lines into the rest of her figure. As it stands, her head tends to get most of the attention because it contains more details.

Tommoy- Very cute and humorous.

Manuel- Nice work so far. It seems that her hair is a little heavy in the back though.

Vigostar- Legs and feet seem to be the major issues here.

Meatsworthy- Beautiful in almost every respect. Though it might be better to be able to see her face?

Adi- Go with the mask in the center!

-Will finish later. Nice job everyone.

The works here are coming along nicely. I have to admit some initial skepticism with the topic, but I've gotten more engaged in this challenge than I imagined I would. Of course, I had a flash of inspiration for what I should have done earlier today, but I've already redesigned this image from the ground up once.

Hell, nothing says I can't revisit it later. In fact, I've got some ideas for the wolf and the woodsman I might do in the future, just to have something thematic in my portfolio.

Everyone picked on the reverse type, haha. That happens because I assigned a key to flip my canvas, and spam it constantly! Sometimes I forget which way it was supposed to be.

Penumbra - Your drawing is excellent. If I could draw like that, I'd have more guts to go tighter.

c@s - I like your stylized figure a lot. Maybe some stronger colors to really push it. Could be my monitor though.

EDIT: Oops forgot to answer, Drazen1 - I didn't have ref for the speedy, but I did dig out some wolf ref later.

Thought I'd have a go on this one, since I was recently researching Red Riding Hood for a different project.

here's a WIP

http://www.weirdnes.force9.co.uk/cart/chow70danjaw.jpg

Seems to me Little Red Hood would be an outdoorsy type, so I cast her as a game hunter.

I think I got the shoulders too broad and the hands to small; the hair suddenly developed a life of it's own. Oh well, I'll work a bit more on it later.

Red was on her way back to the crib when a couple of The Wolves descended on her. She had to defend her flower chain and mack it back to grandma's. Can't get merked in the street.

To be honest, I get kinda sick of all the annorexic strippers that show up in a topic like this, so I shot for an image we don't see often enough: A young, strong, black woman.

Meatsworthy- I compared your finish with the previous wip. The finish looks great but I think the skin tones of the face in the wip give the impression of a face that is slightly pinked by the cold winds. The skin tones in the finish seem a little too uniformly pink or maybe just a little too dark. If you could bring it closer to the values in the wip I think it would be perfect.
Still lovin it, its just a small crit. Its still a superior handling of light as it is.

Mr-Joe _ Thanks, I really appreciate that.

You nailed it! That's what I'm most dissatisfied about. I love that hint of pink in otherwise pale skin. I haven't yet found the answer to carrying the energy & feel of a speedpaint through to final without completely redrawing. Something always gets lost and I don't quite know how to bring it back.

c@s - much bolder now, I like it!

Well this is my first digital painting other than a quick sketch a while back in the DSG. Realistically I'm not going to get it finished but I thought I'd put it up.

Theres some real quality work on this site. So far meatsworthy and naomifuls work are my favourites but everybody has got talent here.

There are some wonderful pieces coming through on this one! Gotta say I love Beastmaster Freds!

I've not really had a chance to do something finished, which is a shame as I love the idea. Here are a few of my doodles. I kept thinking of the James Thurber version of Little Red Riding Hood:

The Little Girl and the Wolf

by James Thurber

One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food. "Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was. So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood.

When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.

(Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.)

The pic is gorgeous Blue, but it does look a little washed out perhaps. A tweak on the brighness/contrast slider bar in Photoshop should sort it out...

Until recently Rose McCowl thought she had a pretty sweet gig, driving around picking up ‘occult’ objects for her grandmother’s collection: Hi, Mr. Tin-Foil-Hat-Man, here’s the money, where’s the bric-a-brac? Thank you, Mr. Tin-Foil-Hat-Man, have a nice day! All well and good… but recently a certain Mr. Wolfe has been trailing her, sometimes even beating her to the pick-up. Then there’re all the accidents, other collectors hit by lorries in the street, falling down staircases, even disappearing. Rose can’t shake the feeling that somehow it’s all wrapped up with this Mr. Wolfe.

Dang. Not only my first ChOW, but my first post here in general. Go me. It's not amazing, but not bad, I think, for hearing about this, uh, Thursday night at 11pm. Just made it, too. Daaaaaang. Haha, I feel so out of place, all I did in Photoshop was add the black borders and lettering... Hur hur hur...

Yeah, she's blue, because she's Pictish-ish. Whoo. Go blue! Not sure how "modern" she ended up being, but I kind of got obsessed with the Pict aspect. Oh well. This was fun, at least.

Red hood is a mushroom dealer, she has to cross central park each day to sell her stuff, she wait her clients in the wolf wall, is for this reason that everybody knows Marieta Nilson as the red hood!

goddamn i love that piece man. i like the concept and absolutely love the rough/simpler painting technique. great attitude in both subject and execution. i'm wondering if we should see just a bit more forest/central park atmosphere but that is a sweet piece man.

Concept for the fairytale in an modern set . Replacing the woods with a big city. Like in the fairytale she is more a girl than a woman.

p.s. Also she could be a messenger in a gigantic skyscraper .Carrying the packets from the lobby to the final office .Imaging a Superskyscraper almost like a little town, this could give a nice background for a story.

Anyway, this isn't finished, so I'm not officially going to submit it for "judging" but want to start getting more involved in the community. I hope no one is offended by her PETA t-shirt.
