Economic girly men.
I suppose I'd better make this on-topic. Where are all the pictures of those guys that have sort of well-built but still quite natural physiques? You know, the sort of guys the Greeks made statues about. If there was a hoard of photos of them then imagine how happy those people who draw Roman and Greek soldiers would be. Too much muscle sometimes just looks out of place, such as if you were to draw a Hoplite or something.

Infact, what ever happened to regular sized people? I don't understand why anatomy reference has to be burly men..

Agreed, but what if you wanted to draw a fat or thin guy? I haven't seen a lot of reference when it comes to those

I stumbled over a bodybuilding photo's a while ago, in a newspaper photoreptage about a competition, and aparantly, it was called something like classical bodybuilding. anyhoo, these guys had what you describe as a more 'classical' look to them, as the rules wherent pure size, but more about being well-toned and well-defined, and as well as keeping within certain proportions. thats at least what this source claimed. however, I cant find anymore of that on wiki or with google.
there isnt hard anyway to find reference with more "greek" bodies. just search for the older bodybuilders. and also, try natural bodybuilding; they cant use steroids and all that jazz, so you're ought to builders with smaller muscles.

this was still pretty much the idea back in the late 70s/early 80s too, but as things got pushed further and further with the 'roids, unnatural became common and freakish seems to be the goal now.
I just watched Pumping Iron again recently and in the Mr. Olympia (I think it's over 200lbs. category?) competition at the end, Serge Nubret beats out Lou Ferrigno for 2nd place, though Lou Ferrigno is obviously much much larger. Serge just had better balance and proportion, and was probably a better poser

There are bodubuilding competition and there are fitness competitions, you have to look for those. They are mostly about chicks with 3 sq inches on fabric on them, oiled skin and too much tan, smilling like they go something jammed up their rear end but there is also a male category. The guys in these competitons have to be defined but not huge. Actually fitness competitions have a part about flexibility and balance and things like that.
