Basic Program and Tablet Question... [Archive]

Hi Guys,

Very new to the site, but been drawing for several years. The thing is I've stupidly always resisted the digital age, but more and more I see the work people are doing and feel its time I dropped the sceptacism.

Thing is I don't know what program is best and whether I need a tablet and if so which one?

Just to expand, I'm looking to hand draw/sketch images and then digitally paint into them to produce a loose painterly effect. Something like Mark Harrison for anyone who's read 2000ad.

Looks like the Intuos is the most popular choice. Can anyone tell me in what way the Graphire range are inferior to the Intuos. There's quite a hefty price difference between the two ranges. I have an Intuos here at work, and it's ace. Would I notice a dramatic drop in quality if I were to get a Graphire for home use?

Also, what size do most people go for? Is A4 big enough?

Nope, much better to ask again what's probably been covered 100 times before, and hope somebody takes pity on us poor saps. It is THE WAY of the internet forum.

I believe the differences are:

for the Graphire model --
lack of macro buttons, less sensitivity (pressure levels) than the Intuos

as far as size is concerned, I'm using the 4x5 without any issues for home usage since most of my work is done with physical media.

I know some people get fed up with noobs asking these questions, but it is a little mad trying to sort through some of these threads. Anyway, I've gone for Photoshop CS2 and I'm looking at the wireless wacom Graphire A4 tablet, I think its about £130 which seemed pretty reasonable.

I'm just starting out so I thought £350 for the ilo-thing was a little bit of a gamble at the moment.

I'll let you know how I get on.
