EOW#50The Architect's House
This one has a bit more brief than the last.
The architects House
The outside of the home is a two story shack sitting atop a huge curled up tree root, lopsided and shanty like, peiced together with scraps and such, but The inside of the small rundown shack is actually a huge 15 story mansion full of strange MC Esher like rooms that act as labyrinths. It is a nigthmare of a house.
The Architect was once a kind, humble man, who would put on magic shows for the children of the city, and play games with them in the labyrinths of his home, but now the children are starting to disappear and the people of the city suspect The Architect as the culprit. The Architect is currently in a deep sleep like coma induced by an exiled shade known as Xaodinat. He has been kidnapping children
I will except any medium. you can image, inside or outside views of the house. taking into consideration the character of the Architect and the Creepy surreal and mutable qualities of the house. original story concept by Paul Fassett as Part of "Adventures in Purgatory"
Now... concept!
Due April 5
NO DESCRIPTION NESSISARY AS THIS HAS A FAIRLY INDEPTH BRIEF on the other hand if you choose to concept the bathroom or some undelineated section of the house thats fine but you might want to orient us with a short description

ok this is finall i dident have time to try any other ideas lots of course work, :)please crit me:)
Desciption:"its finally done! admittantly its not how i planned but at least he's still alive. i followed his instructions perfictly except for the hosts, funny isn't the children that he once entertained are now giving him life, i too would have preffered to use the convicts he had suggested but i was running out of time! it had to be done!
its incredible really all his own creation it simply takes the life force from the few chosen but leaves just enough for them to sustain themselves, such a brilliant mind we were lucky it dident go to waste, all i have to do now is revive him when the cure is found... it could take years but im confident it will work.
disaster!!! a power cut caused the michien to fail breifly he's ok but we lost three of the children... im going to need more..." Xaodinat:

Okay, I'm in. I'll do the outside of the home, because I like big, curled-up tree roots, and an Escher-like interior maze just sounds scary (to draw, that is).
I think Jacek Yerka will be my inspiration this time around. He's a Polish surrealist who creates these amazing hyper-detailed paintings. I giant, ramshackle shack on a big tree route would be right up his alley! Here's a sample (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/jy11.jpg)that was the closest I could find to what I was going for.

Jacek Yerka indeed is a good choice of inspiration for this! He was also the first artist that came to mind...
I'll definetely give this one a go, it sounds interesting. :)

please clarify who's been snatching the kiddies -- the Architect or the Shade? The Archy is sleepy-bye, so I assume it's the Shade, but I want to make sure. either the "He" in the last sentence has an ambiguous antecedent, or i'm just stupid. prob'ly the latter ;)

She opened the door that would not open for the adults, stepped inside, and almost turned and ran back to the town. The strange and chilling expanse of the room drank the light, making it hard to see much, but she sensed the insanity of the place, and sensed also the regard of some evil presence. She wanted to run away, wanted very badly to run, but for the sake of her brother and the rest of the children, she knew she would not.

loosely base on Escher's Relativity, i'm treating this sort of as an illo for a YA mystery/horror novella. i think the gothic/noir quality of the B&W image helps the mystery -- what do you guys think?
also, i've has the devil's own time getting into most any thread lately, so this may have to suffice for my final if i'm "locked out" later on as well.

Vyse, my bad, I read too fast and skiped this part "shade known as Xaodinat. He has been kidnapping children", I thought the Architect invited the kids and then kidnapped them, it also freaked me out the first time I read it (reminded me of Neverland, CA).

lets see if I can do this one as well. I am on and off in these activities I know, but it's usually my confidence and inspiration in my work, that does that. But I need the practice. Last one was impressive I hope that the same caliber of people come back to do this theme! Where is Hideyoshi at anyways?

It's 50
i forgot to change it.
edit ...k fixed
the house intereior or exterior is your choice. the exterior has a more specific description. The interior has more scope for loose interpretation
the character part is merely added as flavouring... people homes often reflect their lifestyles . you do not have to draw either of the characters. and you do not have to know why who ever is kidnapping the children is dooing it or how or why or if the architect actually sleeps....
so if you choose to do the exterior those specificallt stated elements need to be included.

the only person to blame for lack of inspiration is sitting right there in fron t of your computer.... the brief is plenty open. YOu took the easy and litteral way... think outside the box. this si a multidimension spanning house, the inside is bigger than the outside. do an interior. or actually render the one youv'e got so its not all saturated colors and blurry edges.....
either way.... should be a challenge. not boring.. and please stop whining

... hm... should be easier than most to at least begin to visualize, anyway, this kind of idea has been kicked around for a while... check out the last Harry Potter flick. Little tent becomes improbable Pavilion...
I'll bet no one can do the Exterior, Interior, Michael Jackson, Xaodi-whatever, the Architect and a Partridge in a Pear Tree all in the same image... that's right... no one...
That's a challenge, that is...

Sofa, I wouldn't say anyone's mad at you... 'least not me personally. I just don't dig on wild self-deprecation. We all have a long way to go, some more, some less, but no one here sucks unless they're trying to.
On topic, it is a very descriptive brief, which for most concept artists is awesome. It gives you a solid place to start, now you fill in the blanks. Ask yourself where the shack is, what the tree species is, how big, what time of day, is it foggy, sunny, moist, dry, dead, creepy, whatever. And that's just the outside. It all just depends on how much thought you want or feel like putting into it...
dragon, it's here (http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/Corrick/Blob.jpg), and it's just that, nothing big. I was doodling one day. Glad you like it!

if the specificity of the first half of the breif isn't doin it for you. wade into the vague interior. I was trying to set up a real world ish concepting experience, where you take a vision.. not your own and try to get into the otherpersons head. too me this kind of thing is one of the joys of what we do.
take a specific idea and visualize it. but also to take a vague idea and throw visual images out for the originator to be inspired by... so in this particualr case you have a lot more freedom than in a real world concepting job.
On the other hand you can jump in to the thing feet first and try to include interior and exterior. like a space warp trapped inside a Klein bottle stuck up in a tree and made to look like a shack.... this I would like to see.
and rather than just saying "my work sucks" it would be more productive to say. Im having trouble with X or Y or Z (where x=edges, y=colour and z=perspective) and actually let the local experts help you in very specifc manners. because they will. they do. and then by asking a specific question one can see where your learning has progressed to and really feel like you are looking and learning.... which is a possitive thing. where if you just say ..my work sucks we have only two choices.. to kindly asspat, or to agree with you.. neither of which will help you in the slightest, and will irritate us :P

I just want to say that, although I am not part-taking in this event, I think the style of the brief is great, and a lot better suited than a simple 2 word place name as previous. The brief in this thread is a whole lot closer to a real life one than I have seen before.
I was trying to find the words to suggest this sort of thing in the EOW suggestions area in such a way that made people be mindful of passages and scenes that could be used as EOW topics.

I gonna give this one a try. Environments are not my strong point, so I could use the practice. Here's a couple thumbnails. I like the vertical one myself. Trying to emphasize the creepiness of the house. It's built up on pilings and supports. I threw a couple people in for scale, and a little bit of story. A couple coming to look for their child. That's OK right? The house is still the focus.

Wow! Look at all the updates...!
Beelow -- I love the colors you are using. It's very creepy. And the perspective gives it a good amount of movement and energy.
cakeypigdog -- that's a lot of thumbnails to knock out in a short time... how much time did those take, if you don't mind me asking? I personally prefer the first (but that's just me).
sanest -- perspective seems a bit flat and the house needs to be more of the focus, I think. can't wait for your update on the house!
corrick -- it really is a lovely sketch. can't wait to see the colors!

I'm done with mine, so I thought I'd give some feedback on everyone else's.
skunk257-Interesting take on it. I like the scale of it. Kinda looks like weird aliens in the tubes rather than children though.
masque-I'm curious to see where you go with it. I wasn't brave enough to tackle the inside.
life on the sofa-It's very blurry at the moment. Try using some hard edged brushes.
Peg-Nice mood to your piece.
Marco Mazzoni-You're a brave man. Looking good so far.
chaosrocks-I'm interested to see how it will turn out.
vantrum-Awesome pencils. Color is looking good too.
novenus-Another interested to see where it's going piece.
JagoArt-The geodesic dome thing behind the tree is drawing my eye more than the shack itself at the moment.
Mr. Indigo-Hard to tell where this one's going. It is pretty centered at the moment.
robmorfin-Looks like a very challenging perspective drawing. Good luck! Is that crazy pattern going to be part of it?
Beelow-Lookin' good so far. Nice atmosphere.
cakeypigdog-Awesome stuff as usual. Those thumbs are killer.
Sanest-The shack is very centered at the moment. It also feels like it's falling over somewhat. Maybe that's just me though.
Corrick-Lovely line drawing. Can't wait to see the color version.
ArtZealot-Very atmospheric. Looks like a lonely, desolate place. Doesn't have the shack on the tree root though.
Whew! That's a lot of typing. Good stuff everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing the finals. This is the first EOW I've participated in.

ArtZealot that is looking great! Very moody - you could even do without colour. Only thing that is a little too unresolved are the plateaus on the right of the house, could be something with more character instead. Personally, and this is really nothing you need to regard, I have a thing for realism and thus I'm bothered that the rock underneath the house is only a few meters deep. The foundation of the house sould never have been put onto such dangerous rock :)

Just updated with a new sketch... most likely will work off of this one. Please crit away if you feel like. I will color with my tiny 4x5 graphire pad this weekend.
BryanYoung, saw your completed work. Nicely realized from your thumbnail, with oodles of atmosphere! I like the vertical movement in yours.
ArtZealot, love the environment and the palette... but the house and the tree root...? If this is a throwaway, I can't wait to see your update.
ArtZealot
March 30th, 2007, 02:32 AM
Novenus - Yeah that picture is a throwaway. I'm hoping this weekend i'll be able to do an update. I like what you have. I actually like your initial idea better http://www.novenastudios.com/images/thumbnail1a.jpg the upper of the two on that page looked most interesting. I'm not sure why, i think it just incorporates the tree and the house idea well, and has a nice contrast of curves to straight lines. Anyway, that's my two cents.

[QUOTE=BryanYoung]robmorfin-Looks like a very challenging perspective drawing. Good luck! Is that crazy pattern going to be part of it?
QUOTE]
Bryan, thanks, it is a challenging perpective because I have to cheat on it to try to create optical illusions, still want to add a lot of detail and create a sense of height of at least 10 stories, and the texture I liked it, but if you think it looks too busy or that it kills the perspective effect, please let me know, I'm not really in love with it, it's just another drawing I have in my sketchbook, thanks.

March 30th, 2007, 01:27 PM
artzealot, you're actually redoing it?? i think you could still potentially use that. put it on a treeroot that creeps down to the edge of the cliff and even down it a little. it could be a really dead tree root that's been just sitting there for ages to go with that really dark theme and creepy mood?
i really like that sense of atmosphere you had and it's unique.
i'll have something in a little bit. had a deadline yesterday which was priority for me :)

Looks to be another strong round!
Here's what I'm thinkin' on. I imagine the house to be made of many different overlapping pieces of wood boards, metal plates, etc. The door and the window will have an eerie blue light to them, to suggest that something isn't quite right with this house.

...the texture I liked it, but if you think it looks too busy or that it kills the perspective effect, please let me know...
I think in order for it to work it's going to have to be done using the same perspecitve as the rest of the drawing. At the moment it's not doing that.

Thanks for the comments!
Loads of sweet entries (again!)
Masque, very cool and filmistic, a cliffhanger teaser if I ever saw one. I can really imagine the camera zooming out and revealing the horrors. looking forward to see how it turns out.
Skunk257, dark and gloomy, just the way I like it! It would seem like the architect suffers from acute lack of leg though. I like what you’ve done so far about the interior, if you’re going with it then perhaps some of the labyrinthine qualities hinting in the background?
Marco Mazzoni, sweet undertaking :] Really looking forward to see how it turns out, has a sort of Dante’s nine layers of hell vibe to it. Great work!
Vantrum, Awesome! Wonderful lines and the jungly swampy coloured progress image is kickass
BryanYoung, Very nice and eerie! I do think your thumbnail was a bit spookier though. I don’t know what robs your finished piece of that but in my very uneducated and probably irrelevant opinion the differently coloured lights inside the house might be a little disco. :]
Robmorfin, Swirly stairs! I really hope you finish this very interesting and escherisque.
Beelow, Very nice colours. The perspective is having me spinning my head off, in a good way.
CakeyPigDog, Lovely thumbs! So diverse!
Corrick, Wooow! If Norman Bates really were to go house hunting I know for sure where he’d end up :] Beautiful lines!
Artzelot, Holy crap! And now you’re going to do _another_ one? Artzelot indeed! I really like what you have though if you should decide to stick with it, great atmosphere and mood. All the good bits are in.

masque-quite teasing man, I want to see what the whole thing looks like. I am interested though. Judging that what you have up now is only 1/10 of the whole thing, it sounds massive.
Peg- Awesome creepy house! You still working on the surroundings though? It just seems like it could have little more there.
vantrum- great pencil drawings to go along with your nicely colored piece. Thanks for posting those! It is always cool seeing the work that goes into the piece and ideas that go along with it.
BryanYoung- Real strong piece man! Nice touch with the town in the background. I think you might be a lot better at environments then you may think.
Beelow- Woah...Crazy angle and perspective. I am seriously digging that root.
cakeypigdog- Juicy thumbs! I am drooling over all of them. Looking forward to the finished piece!
Corrick- Oh man, that sketch is insane. I cannot even imagine what the final version will look like. I think you should color it for sure. Almost got me thinking of "Monster House".
ArtZealot- Scary atmosphere! I think the gray tones are working pretty well with this piece. Are you really thinking of starting another one though? I say stick with it anyway. Just keep working it and trying different things and you will get a good result.
pa-le- That is a sweet piece. Easily one of the most unique here. I am having a hard time seeing what is happening on the bottom though. Is that a person with long hair there? Maybe think about adding just some more highlights like the ones you have near the top.

In fact, the first one, I didn´t find a good contrast, everything seems pretty neutral....too much gray in the pict...so i decided to use bright/contrast from photoshop, i inmediately get a good contrast but my conscience told me that i have to purchase this result in the artesanal way...
So , i repeat it, including more elements and changing thee roof colour, this little change broke me the harmony colour and i redesign it too.
Finally, im a little bit proud with this second!!

adherance to the brief is a factor.. but shanty can be defines pretty loosely.
and a totally kickass image is a totally kick ass image... might make the writer actually change their mind if it's even cooler than the brief... your choice whether you choose to go out on that limb or not.
