Actually, I had this idea that they had dens or foyers in the mist for fun and to keep cool, but they lived inside the rocks. Though I didn't show it. I will most likely revisit with more "City-ness" at some point.

Justin Oaksford- Nice start! There's a very nice misty, water-droplets-on-the-camera-lens type fell to it. For a critique, I'd say to clear up the cliff/rocks that the buildings are standing on.
Okay, here's some doodles for my piece. I'm picturing some sort of ancient Mesoamerican city, with pyramids and stylized animal statues and cobblestones and all that. The waterfalls in this city are all artificial, cascading down the sides of the huge pyramids and coming out of the mouths of the stone animals and such.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/wata.jpg
By the way, Chaosrocks, I'm liking the nice long times we're getting to work on these.:rendered:
Update 1: Here's a little doodle for my entry. I'm not too sure about the values and I think I'm going to add some more decorative details in the architecture (so that the jaguar statue doesn't seem out of place), but it's the first compositional sketch out of very many that I've been happy with.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/diddle-doodle.jpg
Update 2- More thumbnails.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/thumbs.jpg
Update 4: Starting to render. I'm going to extend the picture frame right a bit, so the ear doesn't make a tangent with it.

hmmm i wanted to make the huts in these pics, skyscrapers and office building cause of the "city" rather than village, but after 10 mins trying to do skyscrapes(even realy basic ones!) i gave up and did even more basic huts so when you look at these picture the huts ans skyscrapers in the same position.
these are realy realy basic, 5-10 minute speedy style paintings, like a personal rough design breif
although these are rough designs tips, info and advice is still very much appreciated, im a noob enviro painter you see.
this is my more piece (ref), roughly 35 mins i think, still low standard, and poor rendering but, hey thats me :) but im still goin through the thought process will probrably only start finaly night before deadline.

I would like to have a go at this one, I like the open topic.
@JustinOaksford Nice start man, I like the colours, the only thing I would say is (and I know its wip) that it's not substantial enough to be a city - I would keep that perspective, pull back a bit and put some more heavy duty looking buildings in, more important looking ones. That's just me though. I have been looking forward to crossing paths with you in these message boards - I like your work. Look forward to updates.
@Life on the sofa Couple of nice ideas, I like the top one best, it almost looks like a city on some structured scaffolding under the river & behind the waterfall. My only crit is as much as the high/low perspectives are indeed in perspective, the grid angle you chose is almost isometric, try pushing your VP's further apart and think of the height you want to convey, look into 3 point perspective for that, there's bound to be something on this messageboard about it.
Will return when I can with wip.
Adam.

An initial WIP just trying to bring some ideas together.....
life on the sofa - I agree that bringing the 'city' element out of brief is part of the challenge, to me it necessitates some degree of scale but I think it will be good to see who people approach it.
Moai – looks nice, keen to see it come together.
Justin Oaksford – Are you thinking of bring out some of the other elements that you talk about.
The slightly longer time limits suit me well, just enough extra time to have to rush things through. As has been said, will have to try to produce something to merit this extra time.

Caught between two warring industrial powers the city of Derwell on Banbar had a long harsh civil war for control of it's vast hydro power generating facilities. But the inhabitance formed a resistance army and liberated their city. After the war ended and the waterwheels were rebuilt the past inhabitance began to wander back and start rebuilding their homes in their new socialist paradise.

Hi! My contribution to EOW is a futuristic city called The Waterfall City.
The reason for the name is, that it is situated along a huge waterfall,
which has many functions. The main is to suply the city with electricity -
for that they have four huge power plants. Of course they also have running
water all the time, huge lifts for transportation and many activities inside the buildings. It is actually quite a happy city living in harmony with nature.

hey life on the sofa Good to see another Uk'er about. Pop your head round the door of the UK thread if you like. Its in the local artists sub-section of the lounge.
I've done a little paint over. Briefly on perspective, but more on general stuff. Though i would say make sure you lay down your perspective first. Anything above the horizon line you are looking up on, and there for draw it from below, and anything below the horizon line you are looking down on, so draw only it's above planes.
Heres a Quick Paint over

hey badger, thanks for taking the time to go into that kinda detail and paint over it much appreciated. i will drop by the uk section some time and i would like to say even tho it may not be complete(but it might be..?)the rendering is flawless in spots on your piece! :) but you may want to fix those leaves on the top left a bit they look pretty cool but are a bit over spaced as they reach the top, other wise incredibly realistic :) look forward to the finished product.
every one elses are lookin realy good too, d-holme looking spectaculaly(spelling?) technical, like the hydro power idea tho, that was the idea on my kinda modern version mind map..but i removed tht image from here hehe

WATERFALL CITY, latest Merza's development, even though they liked living in the depths of Lake Hywull, the king prefered the panoramic views from high above, they have developed vertical algae plantations & the energy is produced by the flow of the water, even when the buildings are shattered continuosly by the water, there is sense of calm inside of them, enemies have tried to take over, but after many battles no one has been able to defeat them.

cool stuff so far. Looking very nice josh, I know its a WIP, but in case you didnt see it, the perspective seems off in the top half of the image, most noticeable on the pillars.
Pretty much finished now...Might try to do a plan of the interior or just a quick concept of what a couple of places inside would look like as well.

Waterfall city isn't exactly a city, more like a holiday resort, that's named 'Waterfall City.' A self contained area, kind of like Centre Parcs in Europe (not sure if there are any in the rest of the world??). The main attraction, apart from the waterfalls, is the 'Plaza' (like the Parc Plaza in Centre Parcs). Its got the usual sports areas, swimming pool, bars, restaurants, shops and clubs as well as executive accommodation. The closest accommodation to the plaza extends out into the Waterfall along with observation points which have there own bars and restaurants. The rest of the accommodation is connected by a monorail system, that extends underneath the waterfall, which is operational 24 hours a day. The only travel to the resort is offered by a train service that snakes through the countryside.

That's pretty much f*cking terrific, yAdam. Makes me wanna get off my ass and do a little painting. Only I have to make money... and spend it on food and cleaning supplies. You know the Black Plague started because of sanitation issues. That's right. But, thanks to Chaos and her respect for the working class, I might have a little bit of WIPness show up...
Dug your TD, by the way... hehe... Nergal... :)
matejkovacic, great perspective. Nice portrayal of the technology issue. Yay hydro-electricity!

I added a tiny little doodle of a WIP to my earlier post.
There's some great entries coming in here!
yAdam- Beautiful. Awesome painterly feel and good lighting. But...(loaded pause)...it doesn't seem like a city to me. A landed spaceship, some sort of factory or installation, but not a city.
matejkovacic- Like others have said, nice perspective. It draws the eyes in quite nicely. The problem, though, are your colors. They feel way too Microsoft Paintey, if you know what I mean. In nature, things like dirt and vegetation usually have a more subtle coloration. De-intensify and vary the colors of your earth and plants, and by all means, take the blacks out of your shadows. Make your shadows cooler and less saturated as well as darker; don't just add black.
Gotta go now, but mark my words, I'll have something to say about all o' y'all's before the round is over.:rendered:

Here's the final from me! Awesome pieces from everyone so far! I'm really impressed with the quality I'm seeing from everyone! Wow!!
http://www.yanimator.com/ConceptArt/yanimator_EOW49_waterfallCity.jpg
A city that was once thriving on ground level, with it's location cleverly situated between deep valleys later became flooded due to the movements in the earth's crust. This shifting of the earth's surface brought water from nearby oceans which at first created minor floods. The water level rose throughout the years and the land was eventually swallowed up, but with some of the old city remains are still visible at ground level.
The new city built on higher grounds, can be found hidden high up between the waterfalls. It is said that this is the only place on earth where multiple rainbows can be seen everyday of the year. Some call it the Waterfall City while others call it paradise.

You barely learn anything if you copy from an image.
Actually, copying from a master is one of the best art learning exercises there is. But I agree with you one hundred percent that a copy of someone else's work shouldn't be submitted as a weekly activity, one of the main points of which is to come up with your own ideas on how to fulfill the concept!!! Let this be a lesson to you, life on the sofa: don't try to copy someone else's work and pass it off as your own. There are thousands of very experienced artists on this site, and someone among them will always recognize a copy.

yes, i did use that pic as a refrence, but in my defence i didnt acctuly claim it as my own i DID say i used a refrence and i didnt exactly post the very image of a search engine copy and paste style. i painted it from a pencil drawing which was yes the one. wasnt going to use it as final entry anyway was trying ideas and water fall stuff more reasons i wouldnt have used
A: i did it rubbish
B:i dont understand copyright stuff, if it was copywrigted and me re painting it even from scratch is is in breach of that copyright then i didnt wanat to get sued or what ever comes form copywright breach.
i realy didnt mean to try and cheat, i hope nobody acctuly took any offence in it in anyway and please dont just label me a cheat loser it realy wasny like that.
and like moai said copying someone of great experience is good for learning and if i had claimed it was totaly mine i would have been an ass but i did say i used a refernce which i quite often do in my sketch book, of photographs and then post the original image as well as my own, didnt think it was worth posting the original here tho. i dont even know what dinotopia is :S
my deepest apologies again if i made anyone angry.

s'ok... chalk it up to learning.... as long as you posted something different as your own you are welocome to study, in any way that suits you. I don'tlike to do masterstudies cause they bore me to tears. but many peoples swear by them.
The actuivity is about presenting your own unique vision. Id rather have a more unique idea, even if it is rendered less perfectly
of course absolutely best is a unique idea, rendered beautifully! as some of you are approaching!!!!

I'm extremely upset sofa! Naw...just kidding. No biggie, you just gotta very clear when you use another artist's work for reference. Like Moai said, it's okay to copy another artist, but just try and make it your own image, and let everyone know what you referenced.
For example, you haven't changed the image that much from the original art. Try using the original as inspiration, and create your own picture. Doing your own take on the Dinotopia picture would be fine. Then you can just say you were inspired by it, and everybody will still love you!

UPDATED-well here we go-the final version of the piece, i hope u all like, there were some great other entries in this comp.
http://www.jonnyridley.co.uk/images/art/digiart/waterfallcity.jpg
backstory....
The city in the jungle always depended upon its position next to a waterfall to provide it iwth power, water and to help dispose of their waste. As time went on the jungle was gradually pushed back by the seemingly never ending growth of the city and its population. The jungle always attemted to reclaim the city but progress always won out against nature.

I posted a small update, I lost time because my previous update was left at my office, so I didn't even remember what I did before, will start painting tonight.
Justin, it's looking very nice from the beggining.
Moai, Nice start, the only thing is how will this old civilization pumps the water to a higher point than anything surrounding it?, maybe you should just show a hill or mountain higher than the pyramids.
D-Holme, keep going, it's very interesting.
Badger, Nice city, I don't see the waterfall though.
Matej.., Nice angle shot and painting, only comments are: the birds look out of scale, the plant on the upper right side is out of the nice perspective angle, and the lower power reactor looks way bigger than the others (I think, may be wrong).
Chaos, I really like your piece, it looks like a hidden fairy tale italian village, and my kids loved it.
yadam, great concept, great painting.
Corrick, thanks, my powers are limited, I'm just learning to paint, so hopefully I can reach good or awesome.
yanimator, thanks, hopefully it can still look good once I paint it. Your concept is great, it's the one I like the most up to now, just one comment, the bottom bridge and the roofs share the same plane but they look as coming from different vanishing points, and in regards to the bridge in the background, who cares what is it for, it looks great and makes it unique, that's what called my attention at first.
Vulgar, thanks, hope you like it at the end.
vitreus, very nice piece, maybe if you played a little bit more with the silhoutte at the top, so it doesn't look as even would look even better.

right now things are cleared up and no one is angry at me i can not feel embarrased lol. now for crits.
matejkoviac:im loving those progress images, and the final is looking very good. my only problems with it ARE HERE COLOUR CODED PAINT OVER :).
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8165/eow49matejkovacic3paintzq6.jpg
CIRCLED IN BLUE: the area circled in blue is where the top of the elevator should be shrouded in mist and not visible, at the moment it just cuts off in a very bold fashion. cover this in mist like on the left.
CIRCLED IN GREEN:the area circled in green is where the ottom of the rock is too different to the rest of it, you have 4 or 5 white stikes across black for the bottom, firstly the bottom should be the same colour as the rest of it and the shadow should be a sublter(real word?) colour than plain old black.
CIRCLED IN PINK: this area is almost the same as above you need a more subtle colour for the shadow(moai has said this further up^?)and the rock just turn from brown straight to black, even if this area is shaded from the sun it does not change the rock to black should still be brown, just darker and with shadow.
CIRCLED IN RED: this is where i think it becomes more of a blocky solid piece way to strong and digital, would be better painted with brush strokes, also the windows creeping of the edge could be edited out make it look un finished.
CIRCLED IN YELLOW/REDISH(at the bottom):these are supposed to be bubbles or spray i think, these should not be so clearly printed on the should be fuzzier, if you hold you hand in front of your face but focus on something behind it your fingers appear just fuzzy this applies to this spray. also it should be much smaller and just more of it, ever seen spray from a water fall be the size of a house?...:D hehe.
just a few point i hope it helps, note:im an idiot if you dont understand any of it dont worry alot of people wont hehe:D.

Perched atop a jagged bit of rock on the Delvorian Waterfall, the magic citadel of Brimlorg the Buoyant is rarely seen up close. Of the few men that have visited the fortress, only Throndor the Bold has returned to seek the wizard's help. It is said that Throndor knows of a secret cave that travels under the waterfall, and that he alone holds a magic charm to pass by the beast that guards the caves. Some have also conjectured the wizard and Throndor have a secret alliance, but that is only rumor.

yfwalls: nice mood on the picture
yanimator: I think it's going to look fabulous.
vitreous: thanks, yours looks very interesting too
robmorfin: you have a good eye, thanks for the crits
life on the sofa: thanks for taking your time to comment my EOW. Circled red and yellowish was ment to be wet lens effect, like on this picture:
http://p.vtourist.com/1/1158859-Prepare_to_walk-Parque_Nacional_do_Iguacu.jpg
I accidentaly made a spot and thought, a camera under a waterfall should be wet and this looks like it, so I made some more
Circled red - is maybe really too digital, but it's also a technology, which is not know to us :) The windows over the border seemed interesting, so I left them
Circled in blue is hiding the sun, so it's a bit more visible, at least I thought so
Circled in pink is a rocky hole in the wall - my reference:

JFWALLIS: woah dude, rendering on that building is sw-h-eeettt~(h for emphasis!) also i love the little knight in the foreground(hey he has no sword?.....all self respecting knights have swords!:() and i like the grass he is staniding on too although it is blatent single brush attack on that rock, its still nice. water fall detail is very smooth could be a bit rougher maybe but its nice as it is just not WOW LOOK AT THAT WATERFALL!(which im sure you could make it. :)finish the protruding rock the building is on please :) ( and in answer to the question in you signature! (lol rhetorical question i know...slash/ i think?) that is where you post a link to a SKECTHBOOK!!!(among other things :)) so i can see some more of your goddam great work!!!!! do it now.

[B]matejkoviach: good you r usuing refrences (lol if youhave read most of page one me saying that is kinda ironic) most of your explinations are cool and i hope you didnt think i was being harsh( just helpfull:)) and i hadnt heard of wet camera effect before, but i dont realy think it works in your piece because it is like you and i have both said VERY digital so trying to go int othat kinda realism like wet lens(or camera?wtever it is lol) doesnt match up realy(good idea though)

Great turn out so far guys, this is going to be a great round.
@Moai - these latest thumbs are great, got it all colour, composition style - I like the one half in/out of shadow - bottom left. But they are all really great
@D-Holme - great start, makes me wish I went more Hi-tech. look forward to more.
@Badger - Looks great man, very peaceful, I can see where the waterfall is but other people might not be so easily sold.
@matejkovacic - You got it all man, great concept, angle, mood & colour, good work.
@Chaos - looking good so far - my only crit would be watch your use of black, it makes for a tough perspective read, look forward to updates.
@Robmorfin - I can already see that yours is going to kick ass man, looking forward to seeing it in all it's glory.
@yAdam - brilliant start, loving the setting, only crit is it doesn't shout city to me - not busy enough, but that's just me.
@yanimator - looks great man, like the rainbow, nice touch.
@supemedarkling - nice start, the colours look quite atlantean to me, crits would be watch your value linear perspectives and, some of your buildings look a little swaying but I understand its WIP.
@Vitreous - your used painter mostly? - I love the mix of industrial and tropical look you have achieved here, I would make the sky line cooler though.
@Supialoctopod - great start, nice peacefull palette, I would bring the front bridge closer in value perspective, and you have some room to add a closer foreground element(s), might give even more a sense of scale/size
@Jfwalls - Love it man, very fantasy/fairytale totally fits the topic. Only crit is loose the screwthread tower, its not in keeping with the rest of the architecture.
great work.
@Corrick - are going to be part-taking man? - I hope so.

After The Battle of Naoen, Outpost Leopold was the last point of Arquon resistance before the Great Sea of Naluja. The Coalition forces and conflict had never made it as far as Naluja, so when the fighting ceased and all of the metal, guns & ordnance were removed, there stood a rough jewel gleaming by the Nalujan Sea.
Although crude and unsightly the original stuctures and power source were left in place and over generations what was Outpost Leopold of Western Naoen evolved into what is now fondly known as Waterfall City.

I was hoping that you guys would choose a favorite.:rendered: Thanks, jfwalls and ATAnderson! And hey, even though I've been lollygagging with respect to this topic, there's still almost a week left to work on it! These far-away deadlines are sweet.:rendered:
Crits, etc.
jfwalls- Very nice! Oddly, I had to reload this page before the updates showed up for me. The foreground precipice is very well painted. Anyway, I'm inclined to agree with the earlier crits. The knight could possibly use a weapon, though he apparently doesn't need it, with his magic charm. The waterfall could have a rougher, more feathery appearance, rather than coming down as neat strings of water. The water falling in the distance looks okay, but the waterfall in the foreground just looks too smooth and streaky. And I'm really not sure at all about that corkscrew business going on with that last tower. I haven't mentioned the attraction the description holds for me yet; it makes me want to play this in a video game or something, to experience Throndor's quest. Good job!
AtAAnderson- Very, very good. Like you said, it's unpolished, but the colors and values are just about perfect! The transparency effect on the waterfalls is especially good. The unrefined nature of the brush strokes, oddly, make this more impressive; that you could do or suggest so much with such a loose, sketchy style was quite an accomplishment. Obviously, I very much like this piece.:rendered:

jfwalls very nice! i would soften the clouds a bit and perhaps use a different warm tone. the color used for the cloud highlights are fighting with the color on the castle walls. but overall this is very nicely done! maybe also add some smaller details on the castle to give it that sense of scale. great description!
ATAnderson - Incredible! That is some quality work! I actually prefer the waterfall in WIP1, as it's a bit more transparent and the reflections/glow off the sunlight works really well. Maybe have the top portion of the waterfall smooth like it was before and gradually fade out and scatter like what you have in WIP2 as the water reaches the bottom of the fall. You have my vote so far!
fooxoo - great start! it would be really cool if you could play off the nighttime colors using artificial lighting lid from below.

oh yeah, the description: "The golden light of late summer made his home seem almost welcoming, for once, the ash and soot of the furnace was blown away from the houses by a gay Southern wind. The waters were by alternating moments clear, offering near mirror-like reflections and troubled, refracting confusing contradictions of light and shadow. The marble mausoleums still squatted like gargoyles up on the clifftops, vomiting water down onto the wheel that powered the bellows that fueled the fires that heated bathwater for the emperor and his court. He sighed, lifted his pole from the water and let the current carry his flat bottomed skow off course for a few breaths. Then he squared his shoulders and directed the small boat back towards his destination. At least his family would be happy to see his return."

Final
CWDF-002 – "Whitefall"
2371 – After nearly a century of construction and backbreaking effort, the Continental Water Desalinization Facilities had been completed. Each was instilled with its own unique character by the social and ethnic environments in which they were built, but one in particular stood out. The CWDF-002, named unanimously by its citizenry "Whitefall", was a city unto itself, having been wholeheartedly adopted as such by a grateful populace. Located on the edge of the Kleeid Wastes, the complex was further developed in later years to serve as water-provider, housing and congregation area for the people, and to this day continues to grow into a sizable metropolis, enabling the once devastated surroundings to build a renewed culture and prosperity.

thanks for the advice guys, especially for mentioning putting something in the foreground, ATAnderson.
"We've been on our own out here since the gate collapsed. We've learned to build our homes in the sky to avoid the toxic fumes. We've made machines to mine the surface for raw materials. We've altered our metabolism to suit the food supply. We've earned every moment of our survival. Our one blessing is the ice-ring and the nearly inexhaustible supply of water it provides. So the falls are wasteful, so be it. They're also majestic and defiant. They inspire our civilization to reach for greatness - even as we scrape out a living on a dead planet, isolated at the far end of the Universe."

A century of overpopulation demanded renewable energy for the city-state Archos. The countryside was historically honored for its natural beauty: the Archan falls. Years of legislative battle were waged, but in the end the water was harnessed. Citizens of Archos now live amidst the never-ending drone of giant turbines - even the water's roar fading dully into the background.

The talent & excellence in this thread, you could cut it with a knife. What a turnout, great work from everyone.
@Robmorfin - you have a strong grounding in skills, the painting will come along nicely with practice. This piece now, you should keep in mind and compare your next EOW with see how far you have come since this one. Good work man.
@yaninmator - Sweet as a nut mate. So peaceful, so beautiful.
@jfwalls - You've nailed it man, right there. Reminds me of these big fairytale books with the metal corners and a lock and key.
@fooxoo - great start, the symetrical front on look could work well for you due to the large and varied number of entries, make you stand out. I think the night time one has the most posibilities. I know its wip but if it was me I would chill out on the dodge/glow at the base of the waterfalls. You could add some kind of little floating platforms in the space at the bottom, all linked together like a floating community. Look forward to updates.
@Dragon - Dragon man, that's great, I want to see it fully realised in an almost impatient way. Not a crit - just a thought a floating air barge in the space in the bottom left could look cool. Keep up the good work man.
@Longxiang - A fun piece man, you got a lot in there and it's definately a contender for the originality vote. My only crit is that you chose quite an isometic perspective, but that said it makes the piece look a bit like a map, which was mabye your intention.
@B-nine - Nice piece man, for your first environment it's great. Some human elements for life and scale would help tie it together. Look forward to seeing more of your environments.
@Vitreous - Nice update man - I did like the more monochromatic dusky look of the first one but this is cool also. As chaos said you need to be mindfull of your value perspective, but you still get a decent read from your image. Good work.
@skunk257 - Great start, nobody went the inside the waterfall route, look forward to updates.
@the mighty hurricane - good to see you here, great piece. The enormous sense of scale you achieved is impressive, I like the 'little people' take and somehow you image looks.....loud, like it would be noisy to stand where you placed the viewer. Great work.
@bwkeough - whoa man, nice 3 point. That is fucking impressive man, lots of possibilities for the render. My only crit would ne to take the 3 small forground buildings out of the 3 point and give them their own VP, its warping a little bit.
It is imperative that you finish this, I look forward to it.
@Corrick - (CHANTS)Corrick Corrick Corrick. Man I really like your work, in general and in this thread. Your use of almost flat colour and the subtle tonal differences you choose are always bang on. I am really looking forward to seeing you realise this piece.
@R13 - Great start - another one in the running for the originality vote, good work keep it up. Advice cause you asked - as your tower goes off towards the top of the page the colours should become less saturated, more monochromatic and reduce in contrast. - you could also show the tops of the building of another of these platforms in the space you have in the foreground, up to you though.
@vantrum - really nice man - the background is very, very good, If it was me (and mabye this is wip) I wouldn't make the foreground as consistantly saturated, but even still man a great piece. I saw some very cool stuff on your website also, see you around this messageboards.
Ok so due to this epic post I now have no time for an update, joking aside I am not sure if I will get mine finished for Friday, so fingers crossed. I will sign off now and hopefully see you folks in the polls.

here i was thinkin enviroment of the week was one of the less popular commuity activities.......hmph im a dumbass :)
vitreous: like chaos said let have more colour and some interesting contrast, you dont want the space craft thingy to be the focus of your picture.
skunk257~: from one photoshop noob to another thats not looking bad but if you used the straight line button(shift i think it is) to do that falling water you might want to re do it because its way to straight i think water has a more crazy and random wya of falling than in straght solid beams lol:) apart from that its looking good so far.
hurricane: wow good to see such a legend here, your piece is looking fantastic as per usual only thing for me would be the spray coming of the rocks and branches, the spray is a bit straight and in one direction and it starts before even reaching the rock i think a bit more crazy white around the base of the rocks ans branches would be good more like the rocks on the far right of the picture.:D
bwkeough:thats on crazy lookin sketch now render the crap outta it :)
corrick: im a great admirer of your work and as good as the piece you have done is its kinda lacking that city feel its looks more like a dam to me maybe some windows or somthing to make it look a bit liveley and some people peering over the top:)
r13: good start now you just need to tighten it up a bit try to define whats what so the metal city parts have a surface and not just loads of BIG brush strokes although random strokes that are a biut smaller are ok :) and make the background more sorta 3d with some clouds and throw some shadow on the clouds to make it feel 3d and cast some lighting on the city maybe.
vantrum: looks very nice, although from your description sounds like a place with lots of insomniacs(people who cant sleep:))lol, but only crit would be what atanderson has said it gets saturated to a point then just continues at the same level of saturation.otherwisee nice pic.
hope i have helped out in some way or another:)

lol matejkovacic, this is why i havenrt posted nything new because this>>(pic i post ) is as good as my enviroments get because i know what to do i just cant do it because of lack of software and skill but thats the idea of practice i guess. i suppose i might as well post an entry to make up the numbers blah blah blah and also i think we need someone like me to bring the high level of work down a notch or two( or 50!!! with how bad mine is)
this was still fairly quick...hmmph bout 20 minutes its rubbish, i wont feel offended if it doesnt even go to poll, especialy with the work chaos will have posting the amount entered this week.:)
watefall city also refered to as sky town is a city which floats in the sky, the river that runs across it has and endless supply but no one knows how it keeps running, the water fall is supposedly MAGIC:)
lol i hope you laugh at it as hard as i have:) but also i would really reeally appreciate tips cos although i know what im talkin about putting it into practice is kinda hard ofr me :/ stupid laptop

life on the sofa - it's not bad at all. If you used some reference and add details to the houses and to the waterfall it could look quite interesting. Maybe clouds could also have some variation. If you feel your tools (laptop, software) aren't proper and don't let you paint details, draw and paint on paper, scan it or take a photo of it.

It is a Matte Painting, which means it contains photographic elements. Is that ok?
Anyway, here is the story:
When braving treacherous paths through these misty valleys, be wary; for what you seek does not wish to be found. Over the waterfall rests a quiet, secretive people, who have gone to extraordinary lengths to extricate themselves of all remnants of humanity. Upon beholding the guardian tower of our lands, know this: If you are one of those from who the worthy have escaped, beware, for you have now entered the realm of Mycenae, and are not welcome.

I hope this is okay, city not really designed to be around a waterfall but rather unfortunate enough to end up there :]
Description: This ancient city was struck by disaster when a meteor struck nearby to create a huge hole in the ground and disturb the entire area. The plains were flooded and the city drowned in the waters.

Well, here´s finally my entry.... :confident
http://ic1.deviantart.com/fs15/f/2007/081/8/9/Waterfall_City_by_BlueRogueVyse.jpg
"The 'Waterfall City'-project started as a normal tourist attraction. Firsty, there was only a huge bridge on which tourists could walk to watch the giant waterfalls stream down. Later, it became bigger when a holiday resort was built on the bridge. Because of the enormous popularity of these homes, the resort grew more and more. The less space on the upper side of the bridge forced the constructors to even build under the bridge, and later on, to even set up a hole complex on the lake.
Years later, when that what was once only a small holiday resort reached a population of over a half million, the right to be a real city was the given to former bridge construction.
Today, this still very popular place is known as the 'Waterfall City'.
...and living 'under the bridge' has never been asked this much."

The Cascada tree has roots that reach deep into the earth and act as a very powerful filtering system for the swamplands they are native to. Found only in the wettest regions of their home planet, cascada forests often support thousands of humans who depend on the water that falls from the lake atop every tree.
Cascada trees thrive wherever there is water. Usually thought of as a very helpfull tree, when a cascada forest invades a body of salt water it can be very bad. Oftentimes they will invade and their powerful filtering system will distill all salt from the ocean, killing all plant and animal life dependant on the sodium in the water; Turning the ocean into a vast freshwater swamp of cascada trees.

The white city of Tybes is over 1200 years old. Originally several cities of water worship, the cities were build around the waterways and rivers leading of the great Borah Waterfall. In 500 years the cities grew to become the city state of Tybes. The water from the Falls provided the city with a means to create energy throughout the centuries. The ancients were right when they said that the water will take care of the city.

Rhymm, a small city on the northern spread, was once an important rail town on the gold mining frontiers. Since the necessitation and reintroduction of clean transport, it has been converted to a rest and revival stop on the balloon shipping lines. By night, the small township lights up and revellers share stories by lantern light, lulled by music and the omnipresent tumbling and crashing of cystal clear falls.
Further down the shipping lines, many labourers are heard to remark of the old world charm of the lantern light flickering on the moonlit waters.

Enrica, The waterfall city
Enrica is a age old city that was built along the side of The Great River of Tolomos. Enrica gets the great waterfall name from the streams of waterfalls that fall off the edges of the buildings that run alongside the riverstream. The city itself is split into two major parts facing the opposite of each other along the river. It is connected by many connecting bridges.
All the electricity in the city runs on the currents of the waterfall streams that run throughout the whole city, thus the waterfalls are a vital part of Enrica. The waterfalls still run today however the buildings are in much need of repair.

Hi.
There was a time when this city lived in peace. The great cloud machines breathed precious water into the atmosphere. Water that the machines retrieved from distant, less arrid lands. On one such mission, the machines were attacked and re-programmed to destroy the peaceful city. They now hover above spewing massive amounts of water, destroying the city. Smaller, heavily armed defense ships patrol the streets eradicating any attempt to rescue the remaining civilians.
