Hiya Rob,
As a book illustator I have to prepare everything i do in comp form to present to my publisher before I begin the painting. Having worked this way for so many years, I repeat this proces when I am doing personal work also. This process is working everything out in detail with photoshop, making a print and then painting from my print. Since I have been drawing and painting for 50 years, i no longer have to prove that I have a good drawing hand. All I have to prove is to get the job done right and in the client's hands on time. For this reason I use every short cut in the books and then some.

Hiya Rob,

Most of my preparatory work is done in photoshop. It's a lot faster and more to the point that way. Also, using this marriage of computer with traditional painting keeps my skills well honed in both the traditional and digital arenas. In the business of illustration, I think that it's very important to stay on top of both fields. Sometimes an illustration should be done with a computer and sometimes it's better to render it with brush and paints.
