[ I think that this is self-explanatory. ]

[ You have the cute girl, on the one hand... ]

[ ...And, on the other hand, you have the larva baby that she is cradling in her arms. ]

[ Straightforward. ]

[ Oh, and a large apology for this extra late topic. :dead: ]

Tried to do this one fairly quickly keeping in mind anatomy isn't my best subject(got this pose out of a book). Im think Ill try to spruce it up in photoshop later. Maybe.

After the generic hot space marine kills the generic slug she finds the generic baby and feels generic compassion and takes care of it.

I haven't gotten the resolutions down yet. If it is too big Ill fix it.

rubicante ... great negative work ... the perspective in the face is a little off compared to the shape of the head ... do you place perspective lines first?
rogzilla .. amazing .. greatline work
the only thing i see is the oversied fingers on his hand

Goran - I like the idea of a shelter and the rain, nice concept
Its kinda hard to know that’s it’s a larva baby from your drawing

Hamsta - yea, that really screams larva baby, it seems to be that the head of the girl is twisted in a strange angle, check the perspective of the jaw line

Rubicante - hey nice first post, I dig your chiaroscuro, and the larva really looks gross…good job. It seems to me that the girl carries or even hold the larva in place rather than cradling it.

my take, less conceptual more fine artsy in my opinion, nvm was a good run

pft! "I don't feel completely on par yet" said about my favourite so far; your design, especially on the larva, says "shiny brass balls", but your text claims yourself a neut ~ one of them is lying, and my bet is on the words.

welcome to the DSG, and may there be many to come!

Goran
good, as always - but not one of your stronger designs - still it's yummy.

Damn, I hoped it was suckeling that titty, but :(
still I like it, good show.

I'll post mine in here if I can make some time, but it's probably going to be a quicky (sorry for the verbatim, image less post)

Haha, thanks Dan...though I don't know what you mean by "neut." Pretty much, I haven't really been able to draw on a regular basis since June when I graduated from college. Only the occasional quick sketch really so I still have a bit of stiffness in my wrist which really sucks when I am trying to make pieces for my portfolio.

Tommoy-This is just adorable! ^_^ I love that it is smiling!

Teknoanimal-This is really neat. I like the scribble technique, finding the contours rather than making them. It looks steam punkish too but I don't know why... Anyways, badass!

VadiQ I'm not feeling this, it has anatomy problems as well as a static composition.
Your shading is a bit too dark, I think...

I like the glowing larva though, helps the focus.

had to fix the lack of a suckling babe - now here is a fairy larva ;)

Tick Tock - now back to my other projects, but it was a nice break ~ and the DSG is probably going to be more like that for here on out, my larva state is at least about to go into some cocooning.

rubicante forgot to add - it's a good start & you have nothing to hide; so stay around ;)

EDIT: It's pretty fucked, I have some clean-up to do with the original sketch, but due to time limitations opted for some heavy maximum/paintdubs etc filter - it shows :(

Some comments on the sketches...

goran: Technically well done. I particularly like the foreshortening of the leftmost strut connected to the opening and how the cast shadow is very convincing. Unfortunately, I don't see a cute girl in this sketch.

Wspeed6: This sketch makes me feel like I'm a tabloid paparazzi spying on a celebrity mother suckling her maggot offspring. I like the expression on the larva's face... very unnerving. However, this is a bit rough - I see construction lines everywhere - perhaps if you put those lines on another layer you could see if they add anything to the sketch, and if they don't, then you don't have to include them?

Mazeroni: The sketch is too BIG for a pencil sketch; I am looking at mostly white space here. Perhaps my monitor is too small? If you are having trouble with anatomy, what would happen if instead of sprucing up this sketch in PS, you completely re-did it in pencil again? My guess is that you would improve the parts where things look off; e.g. the hands, etc. Actually, I like your premise for the sketch, it seems to me the most believable excuse for a girl to be holding a larva baby.

Hamsta: I like the POV in your sketch here. I was going to try something very similiar, but instead went with the safer, duller option. One thing that this POV has going for it is you can see freckles on the cute girl, particularly freckles on the chest... just a thought. Anyway, there are areas where you could really be defining form more; e.g. it looks like you started on the hair and then lost patience. Why doesn't that larva look more rounded and chubby? Because there's no form - that's why!

rubicante: This is an excellent depiction of the larva. She just can't hold on to that thing. Makes me think of grabbing squirmy puppies. I think some darker grey shading, particularly on the larva, would add a bit of depth here and allow you to focus certain areas a bit better... not sure though.

Pheuronskeurts: Wow. I really like this concept. There is a lot of potential here. I think the sketch needs polish though, as things are a bit hit and miss: like the exaggerated curve of the leg works for me, but the elongated neck is really just wonky looking.

Vulgar: Less commentary, more sketching.

Rogzilla: Hmm, this girl looks like she's more intent on using the larva baby for arm curls. I like how you achieve a feeling of weight here though. It really looks like that larva actually has a fair amount of heft. I tried this myself and failed.

BuckWeisel: Hi, Buck. I will give props to your props, they add quite a bit to this sketch. However, I'm confused about your light source here; it seems a bit unorganized to me. Also, I realize that this is just a sketch, but why is her hand still green?

VadiQ: I like the rendering on this one, but as Hamsta mentioned already the shading is a bit drab, (almost to the point where it looks like your cute girl has stubble on her face). Keep sketching and I have a feeling you will easily resolve any issues that are cropping up in this sketch.

Jack Frost: This is an interesting concept even if it missed the topic. I like the hot mitts. One thing, if her outfit is aluminum or made with some other metallic material, it doesn't really look shiny enough. Perhaps some research is in order?

Bismod: I like this because it is different. I feel it is lacking in narrative. That is all I will say about it.

spikeblack: The character's emotions are very easy to read in this sketch. This is definately something I need to work on. Honestly, I find this sketch a bit unsettling because the larva that she appears to be suckling reminds me of the Shy Guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shy_Guy) character from SMB2, which in turn leads to even stranger thoughts.... I won't go there, but the larva does seem pretty vague.

Tommoy: Your sketch has a nice, clean feeling to it. The flies on the mobile are a nice touch. I think some of your soft brush strokes are kind of taking away from the clean feel of the sketch, especially around the head area. Maybe more transparency, some blending with the background, or a combination of both would give a better result?

Pluizje: This is my kind of sketch: shows the character and the creature clearly, good effort put into rendering, and an interesting pose. Still, a big problem is that there isn't enough variation in your hues, tones, or values so it all looks quite flat. My only suggestion would be to make new layers and play around with colours. If you don't like a result, delete it and start again. Also, you should consider looking up blending because I think it would help alleviate the patchy lighting situation you have going on in this sketch.

Charcoal: The background does a good job of focusing my eyes where they need to be in this sketch. I won't comment on the rendering, since it looks like you just ran out of time rather than having any real problems with it. However, the nose of the character seems to have been flattened an unnecessary amount and makes me think "ape-like." Now, depending on one's preferences "cute girl" and "ape-like" don't really belong in the same sentence. Maybe, some additional observation of cute girls is in order...? No, I'm serious.

ashton: I don't like mentioning favorites, but I think I will say that this is my favorite sketch so far. Your sketch seems slightly off-topic with a feline-like larva, but there is a very mellow, painterly feel to it with a lot of excellent colour choices. I'm impressed.

teknoanimal: Again, here is another well-defined concept, which I tend to gravitate to. However, I think the colours are very mushy; that is, they have ill-defined boundaries with an overabundance of soft specular that washes them out too much. Think: soft brushes and building up layers of values. Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with mushy colours; they are a hard habit to break.

dan liimatta: Not sure what to think of this one (other than I had to resist this sort of theme myself). I really like the contrast of the pale complexion and the flushed cheeks, etc. Although, it makes me think she is enjoying the suckling to an unusual degree within the context of a maternal/maggot relationship. I don't really mind the roughness of this sketch due to time constraints, but there is a blur on the face and breast that denotes a unusual degree of carelessness on your part. Obviously, you are aware of this, but I was just going to mention that it reminds me that your avatar has some lossy bits or jpeg artifacts that you should consider fixing or painting over when you get a chance.

kawakaze: I like seeing your shaded pencils and your approach to the topic is fresh. However, that hand... sooooo... enormous!

Carnifex: Flat but effective colouring. The larva doesn't look too bad to me. Two things that bother me. First, there is no shadow under your character; and second, the cloth that covers the larva isn't very convincing as a cloth*.

eblu: Good use of form. I find it difficult to see how that one hand is interacting with your larva; seems like it's meant to be petting it, but looks more like it's poking it in the eyes.

*Note to self: sketch cloth.

Rogzilla- thanks. I really like your use of values in yours. One of my old teachers turned me onto sketching real fast and letting whatever flows flow. Funny though, I did clean it up :) ....a little.

Burrito- Thanks for the crit. I am gathering that you think I need stronger highlights and darker shadows. Contrast, all that good stuff. Yet again I started to spend to much time on it. I think I did that in about 2 hrs and I thought that was to much so I started cutting corners. I will try to incorporate your suggestions in the space ship miner sketch.

Thanks again guys.

burrito Well doesn't a mother always like her children?
When it comes to the blurred and sloppy work, I agree - so I cleaned it up during breakfast, less filters, more strokes ~ hope you like it - & damn, that's lots of comments :P

Anyway why resist? I made a fairy & her suckling babe - & even kept away from nipples, I feel on the safe side :teeth:

As for your piece, you should look at that face/neck area - it might be me, but the neck looks like a cone ~ and I'm guessing that I'm mixing up the hair with the flesh, if not you should look some at anatomy ;)

Anyway updated mine.

PS. The Avatar is pretty old, and will soon go - I just need to remember to draw one when I have the time, tick tock :P

I will choose 3 to comment on.

crazy3dman - I like the overall pose and your illustration is clear
but a bit dull, good none the less.

Rogzilla - I like it, good use of b/w , A true sketch, I wanted
this angle and tried to get the tits in view but failed. Color would
help seperate the arm from the larva but that goes without
saying.

burrito - original take on the subject, looks effortless, Strong hand pose.
I saw it and thought, damn that makes sense. - thanks for the comments

special mention

Jack Frost - I like it, I think the grama of the brief is misleading, I only got it because
there was a topic similar a while back. Anyhow - good job, you could make the suit
more sexy like cut the back out but hey.

burrito thanks. yeah both arms bothered me in this one, shes supposed to be scratching the larva on the head, and the larva was Originally going to be suckling, but the perspective wasn't working so i adjusted everything, and now she's poking him in the eye.

goran love the bleakness, wish i could see more of the subject

jack frost intentional or not, I love the lava baby. i think it still fits the subject

general comments I'm a little disappointed in myself in this one, I focused on the creature, and missed an opportunity to get creative with the relationship between the 2 individuals. the cute girl was basically a back drop for the larva. I think I'm seeing alot of that. some examples: mazeroni the story you wrote has a dynamic relationship implied, but your illustration isn't showing any of the tension, or the gore you mentioned. teknoanimal i think your larva is basically a prop so you could draw the hot chick. these aren't bad by any means, I just think we missed an opportunity in this dsg.

the ones I think are most successful:
jack frost
crazy3dman
kawakaze
tommoy
spikeblack (great facial expression)
burrito (seems like you thought up a good pretense for a cute girl having a larva)
and buckweisel (great expression)

Well I think you have lofty goals with the meta, personally I find that a dead larva and a pretty girl tells a story, often as interesting then if the larva was more active in the meta tale. Of course how well we have rendered this is an other point, but most people in this DSG have portrayed a sad, surprised, or happy ~ cute girl, with a larva. It is more or or less what is asked of us - and each do tell their story, for example the happy girl with the larva tells a potential story of the nature of a mothers love, or that of evolution and so on.

trying to push the limits of the topic for me isn't what I'm after, but rather I want to contain myself within and tell the story asked - sometimes I'll spend more time with it, but for me in this we where asked for two characters - the girl and the larva, not really anything more, and so I'd prefer that people kept that boundary. Thus I find those that kept it to this sandbox, and not strayed beyond better additions as meta tales. Now of course some can't simple draw as well as others, and thus some fall flat due to it, but that those that contain themselves to the topic, are the boring examples is something I find somewhat contradicting to the DSG and it's topic.

It's always in the end a personal opinion of course.

& as for where you spend your time, I anyway probably spent more time with the larva then the girl ;)

oh well this will go nowhere :grandpa:

Preference
As mentioned above, I  Rogzilla's maternal creation, and especially the cuddly well designed larva.

~ but also crazy3dman, Carnifex & Tommoy for the same meta reason.

Burrito You know how mistakes are the first thing that you notice?
That hat! What is that asymmetrical grey lump on her head?
Some people really do have an upper lip like that, but this isn't working for me. Still a cute expression though.
