How does copyright work with demo reel music? I mean it's for commercial gain you put together a demo reel hoping to get a job in whatever part of art you're applying to. Would I have to buy a song to use it or is just mentioning the artist's that have made the music enough?

However , if we flip the situation, a singer wishes to have a cd cover , then the artist wouldnt settle with just having his or her name there.

I'm abit confused.

I think you're supposed to ask the artist for his permission and yes.... moneyz. I'm not sure how it works where you're located, but in the Netherlands, there is an organization that handles these things. If you want to use music for a jingle, site, presentation.... whatever.... officially, you should ask for their permission. Most of the times people forget. A presentation, is usually one of those occassions. You could try the 'they don't know, i won't tell' method, but that feels a li'l bit dirty still. So, please, look into the millions of organizations in charge of this stuff.
