View Full Version : JULY GUEST SP THREAD (a new month folks!)
July 1st, 2003, 01:53 AM
July 1st, 2003, 06:02 AM
Wanted to experiment with something different tonight. Not sure how well it came out, but it was fun nonetheless.
Killing.People - So you do exist? lol. Thanks bud, I appreciate it, I was wondering where you've been.
Endregan - Thank you. Same thing as last one, be careful of the measurements. The mouth especially looks like it could be positioned a little more accurately. Currently the nose and the mouth are throwing the face into an elongated frown. It's a hard spot to measure up, just be very careful as you study it. If you keep missing the spot again, dont' worry, just intensely measure and see if you can get it as accurate as you can humanly possible, then one up it.
ZippZopp - Thanks bud. Nice to see you again. Good expression, tones could use a little softening in spots though. All the value shapes seem too hard, throwing some soft edges in there between value transitions should pop this one nicely. Don't overdo it though.
Keyth - There you are bud. Now POST MORE! Oh, and let's see you mix it up. You have incredible pencil rendering skills, I'd like to see you do one of these in pencil, think of it as a challenge of sorts ;)
July 1st, 2003, 12:27 PM
yes thanks blackhawk. its just odd cuz the angle im doing it from is looking down at my tiny mirror so it is distorting and the foreshortening makes it look bad. :P. I will keep trying though!
July 2nd, 2003, 09:05 AM
ha. i hear you BH. i will one of these days. just trying to get back into daily's. i like how you mixed it up on this last one. your noses rock. what are you shooting lasers at?:p
July 2nd, 2003, 10:14 AM
Pink eye sucks.
you guys have a headphones thing going on :p.
July 3rd, 2003, 01:07 AM
very clean keyth, i like. dont think ive seen anything from you with lines before :p (mind you i havent been visiting much for some time)
well, i havent posted on the boards for something like 8 months now but looking through the sopd galleries today made me feel like drawing myself all over again ;) so here goes:
edit: well, it looked ok til i posted it
July 3rd, 2003, 01:23 AM
July 3rd, 2003, 06:04 AM
lol, don't ask me what was going on with this one. My mirror base broke and I had no mirror to use tonight, so I just kind of doodled from memory, then let my brain work itself over into this.

July 4th, 2003, 04:55 AM
This month's sp's are looking great guys!
Sorry for the big size guys. Didn't finish the lower part, cuz I got distracted.
THe value range isn't that great...
too many colors.....
oh well, it was fun. :)
July 4th, 2003, 11:23 AM
Long time ago i postet my selfportraits here too ... (but always on sijun.)
But some threads around here captured me again, an so i visited this actual thread here again.
Still only great SP's here .. especially i like yours, Mr.Brian, great. :)
This is from first of july, my 50th selfportrait:
Dont want to spam this thread too much with all of my last ones, but this is my last but two, too:
July 4th, 2003, 02:38 PM
look'n good duracel...interesting.
here's yesterdays. i did it in photoshop...and i don't understand painting in photoshop yet.
here's todays. happy fourth.:chug:
July 4th, 2003, 03:31 PM
short sp i did in OC. need to do more.
July 4th, 2003, 08:43 PM
July 5th, 2003, 05:05 AM
Keyth - LOL. I don't know what I was shooting lasers at, probably all the bullshit I have to go through everyday, lol. Your second July 4th one is stunning, very meaty, beautiful form.
Endregen - Again, be careful. I think your main problem spot is the nostril, mouth area. Your measuring it wrong and it makes it look like your long in the face. A good trick to help with portraits is to quickly lay down some kind of measurement markings, anything that'll help guide you in the rest of the portrait. That way you can get the proportions accurate before you start hitting the details and values.
Duracel - That tiger one of you is badass, love it man.
I.was.ink - Welcome, good to see you posting in this section finally. Good SP's, don't be afraid of the mouth, jaw area. It can be one of the most difficult spots to draw right, but you can never succeed if you don't fail it acouple times. Give it a go.
Jeff Gran, OneBigCelt, HellTaxi - Welcome guys, good to see stuff from all of you, keep them coming.
Sorry I shut the comments short. Again, no mirror tonight, just let my brain do it's thing, see what it wanted to do.
July 5th, 2003, 07:15 AM
keyth, thx. Your last one is really great too, perhaps a bit dark(-> histogramm) ... perhaps some lighter highlights.
But i really like those warm colors - summer, isn't it? :)
HellTaxi ... dont really like the white-side - but the sp looks fine to me.
I.was.ink ... pink?? ;D
Blackhawk, you've really improved since my last visit. Like the outline and the orange colors. :)
stretching in the morning 12 o'clock:
July 5th, 2003, 02:18 PM
pink eye almost gone!!
July 5th, 2003, 05:03 PM
Its been awhile since I had swing at one of these. Great work everyone.
July 5th, 2003, 06:58 PM
Yeah, this is great!
Perhaps a touch too much custombrush, but ... ;)
Done in 2 commercial breaks:
July 6th, 2003, 01:18 AM
here's the first traditional painting i've done in a looong time. done in acrylics.
July 6th, 2003, 04:29 AM
well i had so much fun with the last one that i did another.
July 6th, 2003, 09:51 PM
July 7th, 2003, 04:47 AM
What a shitty weekend.
Duracel - Thanks much. You've improved tremendously too, I've been watching a lot of your speed painting stuff over at Sijun, good work.
Endregan - Some features are beginning to fill out, play with the line weights a bit, experiment a lot, see what kind of effect you can come up with on the form of the drawing. Keep working at it bud.
Dan Milligan - You are a badass, plain and simple. I love this one, I tried to do a mock of it tonight for my own, but things quickly fell apart from the start. You have a great style.
Ilex - Nicely done, Play with those warms and cools a bit, see what can happen with the form and the focus when you do. Nice to see you posting again.
Jeff Gran - You have a great control on the lighting and color, but be careful on the features. Nose form is askew as well as the eye form and placement. Nice work, keep it up.
July 8th, 2003, 12:15 AM
don't stress it BH. next weekend will be awesome;)
just like BH said. great job everyone. i missed some days but hey, this is the most SP's i've done in a month for quite some time. i must admit...it's bring'n me some joy(still shak'n off some rust though:p ).
my only question is this: where's OB?
July 8th, 2003, 02:28 AM
i tried being more conscious of warms and cools. i have to go back in and get rid of the yellowish green on the forehead/nose/chin and just tone everything down but i have to stay away from it for a bit.
jeff:i like how some of your face is clear and the rest is blurred out. looks like you were rushin with the hair...would be neat to see this effect developed more.
blackhawk: this is interesting...if i let my eyes unfocus i see a whole face under there...
July 8th, 2003, 01:07 PM
hey guys. pink eye is like back or something this blows.
Thanks for all your encouragement
July 8th, 2003, 04:27 PM
trying to get back at it....
http://members.fortunecity.com/jaku1/sp/8703.jpg Bored.... i played a bit with in in painter http://members.fortunecity.com/jaku1/sp/8703a.jpg
great work everyone!:D
July 8th, 2003, 11:04 PM
mega ultra fast speed paint. gotta go to a b-day-p.:p
July 9th, 2003, 02:13 AM
so this is my first post here, hi!
im going to be a junior illustration major at rsad.
here's a quick self portrait, critiques are welcome.
July 9th, 2003, 03:07 AM
Thanks for the comments, blackhawk. I definitely concentrated on getting the colors right more than I did with getting the form right on my last ones. Today's was in pencil, trying to get a good likeness.
ilex, thanks. I do tend to rush it when I get to my hair...it's just wild and tangled so I don't like to spend time getting all the little hairs going in the right direction. I also like your acrylics, you have a cool style. About your last, you could subdue it and all but I like the colors you have, they give it a nice punch.
July 9th, 2003, 04:56 AM
did this one 2 days ago, a bit off:
Did this one yesterday, it's a pretty good likeness IMO but still somethin wrong, the expression is wrong, the lips are crappy and the nose is pissin me off. Still gotta work at it I guess.
I'm pretty happy with the hair tho :P
and here is a link to the real me.
July 9th, 2003, 04:39 PM
i've missed you too gus.
You are doing GREAT!
right now i'm up to something new - not much time to draw :( :bash:
luckyly i keep a paper under the keyboard at the job and get to fool around still.
I hope i'll be able to show you soon the "what i'm on for the moment". You'll like it ;)
i see that slowly everyone is pushing the limit - and a good feeling. Kiling is alive :D
BH, Keyth ... do not stop!
I'll try to be around! time is a bitch!
July 9th, 2003, 07:59 PM
cool oblio i like how you did the mirror and how its not facing, its from the back. good idea.
July 9th, 2003, 09:42 PM
July 9th, 2003, 11:57 PM
well...one of these days i'll spend some time on a SP like the old days. that time stuff is hard to come by these days.:p
July 10th, 2003, 09:18 AM
maybe this (http://www.pantarhei.cd/images/Me2r.jpg) can help you see whats wrong with the second.
+ try to leave the black outline away
July 10th, 2003, 09:47 AM
in and out of consciousness. :dead:
July 10th, 2003, 11:33 AM
Yeah here's another...
zeitzeuge cheers for that i can see where i went wrong now, i don't really draw lines or nuthin when painting from observation, so my proportions and all that are usually rooted...
July 10th, 2003, 05:56 PM
but i've managed to hold the pen tonight...
July 10th, 2003, 06:07 PM
I feel so lazy sorry, have to do a full blown sp tonight to make up for it. comments will come then too ;)
July 10th, 2003, 08:18 PM
Good job everyone! :)
July 10th, 2003, 11:00 PM
Damn, I suck at color.
Here's my crappy contribution...
July 10th, 2003, 11:40 PM

July 11th, 2003, 07:52 AM
Scratched Glass_ smooth style man!
I.was.ink_ hey great line work dude..

my first post in selfportrait thread. I welcome myself. thank you Me.
July 11th, 2003, 10:46 AM
hmm ... sometimes i ask myself, why andrew isnt posting in "here", or if everybody should own a singel Forum for himself. Only great work around!
Ant4d, looks great but unfinished - go on with it, plz! :)
Its oblios face *look at name* ... yep, as i said, its obviously. ;)
Scarthed glass, like it very much. :)
July 11th, 2003, 01:55 PM

Scratched Glass - nice

July 12th, 2003, 11:41 AM
YO fOOs!!! what's up? hey duracel, andrew pops in here. one big juicy thread is one big fun happy family:p . but by all means, if you want to start your own...go for it buddy.
look'n good folks
July 12th, 2003, 01:34 PM
farley13_ what media is that exactly? (digital?) looks nice! the texture and stuff...
anyway here's mine... me lookin up at my mirror with the lights off and the screen illuminating my face with blue... mostly.
It seems that once i start to add detail and render it more i stuff up the proportions and shapes. something still wrong (with the eyes i reckon) but i'm pretty happy with it.
July 12th, 2003, 04:27 PM
its me again! 2 more for you people. I think i may be finally getting the hang of this...
done in photoshop
July 13th, 2003, 07:20 AM
Helltaxi! I really like yer colour choices and how you have pretty light shadows (the purple and green) looks great.
and another of mine..
I'm fair getting the hang of how my face looks.
Nose took me the longest.
July 13th, 2003, 05:26 PM
uh.. while waiting for my old computer to... compute something for me :D
oh... where are my old days?
July 14th, 2003, 04:02 PM
An hour and a half oil sketch from the other night... small only 8x10
July 14th, 2003, 05:38 PM
You guys rock hard... I'm relatively new here, so what up everyone. Here's a quick sp...
July 15th, 2003, 06:46 PM
Wow, only great work again, ist just a pleasure.
Especially i like those natural-media Paintings. Have to try tis out myself ... will buy some acrylics these days i think.
July 15th, 2003, 10:17 PM
Nice work everyone!
Duracel! that's pretty damn nice! maybe the blue is a little too saturated tho...
Anyway here's another of mine, quick skethch, then added a background...
July 16th, 2003, 02:10 AM
not exactly regular, but heres another:
oblio: you must finish one of your sp's! that last one with the wacom (the 11th?) looked very promising
duracel, Dr Jones gets hiis own forum because
a) he is a professional
b) he started this whole thing of his own gumption, the guest gallery was setup because other people were inspired by him and wanted to join in in some way. note how it is called the GUEST self portrait gallery. emphasis on the GUEST there ;)
edit: oh yeah, i know the mouths a tad wonky but can anyone see any other problems?
Wizard of KOZ
July 16th, 2003, 06:08 AM
Graduation is on the horizion, 11 weeks and counting...
July 16th, 2003, 04:15 PM
I'm digging that, Koz... sweet color choices.
July 16th, 2003, 10:03 PM

Gotta thank Android for telling me about this place.

July 17th, 2003, 01:05 AM
Hey John great pic buddy! very atmospheric and great texture!
July 17th, 2003, 01:41 AM
I appreciate it!
keyth: nice Baconesque thing you've got going.. keep it up!
July 17th, 2003, 03:25 AM
great stuff above.. wow.
Keyth - quit that color scheme - you hear? :bash:
And there are more brushes/tools you can use in that program - walk new roads for a while. :chug:
July 17th, 2003, 08:10 AM
Yep, John, this is a really really damn good piece of art to join this community. Welcome! :)
@Elmo, thx. Yep, i have to agree about the blue.
Dont like the white-blurry border in yours. But the overall colorsheme is nice. Perhaps some more different colors in the face to get it alive.
@Nex, yep, i got the point. ;)
I think something is wrong with your left eye .. and perhaps soemthing with your back jaw.
Yeah, cool. Perhaps the blue is a bit too saturated, and i dont really like the large black backgroundparts. But anyway, i really like it, no crits to the face!
@keyth .. hmm, its always the same dark-red colorsituation. And perhaps, some ears would be nice to see next time. :D ;)
Well, i think the last one is not as good, but overall really good work of course! :)
Yesterday midnight, 30°C in my room .... so damn hot :D
July 17th, 2003, 02:54 PM
July 17th, 2003, 07:30 PM

July 20th, 2003, 06:56 PM
hey everyone...i have been on a long leave of absence lately...in other words i have been slacking off too much. so i finally did a new self portrait the other day in oils on wood. not my best..but it still felt good to start painting again.
john: man, that one is totally sweet! i love the old feel to it and the colors. very nice
keyth: i love the textures in your last one, awesome! makes me very excited! hahah
July 20th, 2003, 08:21 PM
that expression is genius daarken!
July 20th, 2003, 11:11 PM

July 21st, 2003, 04:06 AM
as an undead pirate....
July 21st, 2003, 05:11 AM
Beautiful work guys. Sorry I haven't posted in a bit, been in San Diego for the last week and a half.
July 21st, 2003, 07:50 AM
amazing stuff everyone, here's another attmpt by me, this time with a pissed off face...
quick sketch cuz i was getting annoyed with holdin that expression, i know the eye on the left is rooted...
July 21st, 2003, 07:48 PM
havent posted one up in here 4 ages, good to see a few familiar faces still around(heya blackhawk,Oblio ;)
Just focused on drawing the face area, thats why the rest of it is roughly drawn down...around 40-50 mins on this one, used a mirror,HB,blending stump on A4 paper..
July 22nd, 2003, 01:07 AM
Thanks for the comments on the first one! Here's another... this time doing my lame ghoul face.
July 22nd, 2003, 03:24 AM
Hey.. if it isn't for the cigar boy :D Welcome back Rusty
(that sketch rocks) - lovely line!
johnsaulrubio - nice va;ues and colors. Some problems with the shape though - perspective and all - the right eye seems misplaced and the nose seems also a bit odd (might be the esxpresion thought)
some more attention to the strokes will enhance the overall feeling of it - don't worry - i'll never achieve your skill, but i'm a big mouth :D
(the first one was DOPE)
Keep it up!
July 22nd, 2003, 10:37 AM
July 22nd, 2003, 01:48 PM
daarken, impressive one!
Visited your homepage, your selfportraits are all quite fantastic!
Do you work from mirror?
All others, great work too!!!
Here is my first attempt to paint a greyscale-selfportrait in photoshop.
and, as you can see in the background, i got a new very large second mirror. :)
July 23rd, 2003, 03:35 AM
I should get back into these dailies a little more whole-heartedly. Don't know where I was going with this. I blame it on a crooked mirror.
July 23rd, 2003, 04:06 PM
Okay, here goes my first attempt at a self portrait. The really sad thing is ... it doesn't look anything like me. :( Oh well, I'll get better with practice!
July 23rd, 2003, 09:21 PM
Vorsprung durch Technik, hmmm, ich weiß nicht, ob ich den Untertitel richtig zu deuten vermag. Aufjedenfall hab ich es mir deshalb länger angeschaut als sonst, hehe. ;)
DraigAthar, good one for your first try! It'll be interesting to recognize you better each spod. ;)
July 23rd, 2003, 10:26 PM
Thanks Duracel, I love your SPs, especially the one in your avatar. Oh dear, does this mean I've now committed myself to one of these every day? Eeeek! I'll try and live up to expectations. :)
July 23rd, 2003, 11:12 PM
thanks daarken...good to see you again. nice work.
sorry for the lack of ports people. i am getting my first taste of the horrificly reputated "crunch time". i've been working my a$$ off....i mean i really have no more a$$ left....just bone.:p
July 24th, 2003, 09:04 AM
He Rusty that's pretty slick!
Tomasis, one mad style, everyone else great work too! Here's another of mine, turned out pretty well i think, It ACTUALLY looks a little bit like me. I found it much easier to work in grayscale and leave colour out for now, u guys reckon i should post higher res pics next time? eh whatever...
July 24th, 2003, 11:32 AM
I tried to get the proportions right ... didn't pay much attention to anything else :emb:
July 24th, 2003, 02:31 PM
Sorry I haven't posted in acouple days guys, I've been doing them, but work is exhausting me. Keep it up guys.
July 24th, 2003, 04:05 PM
Okay, I tried another one. This one looks more like me, at least. :P
July 24th, 2003, 04:55 PM
nice blackhawk i especially like that B&W one...very cool.
Ive been doing them too but on paper really and just to test out proportions of the head...might do some digital sp's soon again though, missing yall ;). good stuff guys
July 24th, 2003, 08:13 PM
Blackhawk, great! I like the second one, those subtle colors really make it near perfect. ;)
And well, perhaps i should try painter again. ;)
@All others, nice ones, too. :)
PS: No SP this time. ;)
July 25th, 2003, 12:38 AM
Blackhawk, Rusty, Keyth, Duracel, Rabe, daarken... You bastards are dangerous! Awesome work!
Here's another for me...
July 25th, 2003, 01:33 PM
focused on the eye too much :(
July 26th, 2003, 03:49 PM
Good with the bad.
JohnSal - Thanks. I really dig the expression in your SP, very dynamic, I like it a lot.
Duracel - Thanks
Rusty - Good to see you again, beautiful pencil work.
@Everyone - Pretty much great work all around. I wish I had more time to comment, but I head to work in about 5 minutes here. Hopefully I can be a little more helpful later tonight.
July 26th, 2003, 05:08 PM
July 26th, 2003, 05:28 PM
John, great work, impressive expression. ^^
Here is a new one, tried out acrylics first time ever - so my concentration was around this new medium. dont judge me by the proportions and the perspective this time. ;)
July 27th, 2003, 12:49 AM
great work guys.
July 27th, 2003, 01:03 AM
I decided to break out some real paints tonight (crappy digital camera pict of it).
July 27th, 2003, 04:04 AM
Here`s a really quick sketch I did the other day, didn`t bother cleaning up or adding shadow too much. Very loose. Just normal pencil because it`s all I can afford.
(Not really sure if my image`ll work)
July 28th, 2003, 12:38 AM
yeah been extra special lazy for the summer, making some money at least . . .
Circe nice - makes me want to do another acrylic, too bad I don't have space to keep it permanately setup, would have more motivation then ;)
Duracel nice stuff . . but the trad stuff takes some time to get used to! heheh :)
SinisteR - nice, but in places feels too 'sketchy' I do the same of course, but it's nice to strive towards line control :)
Blackhawk nice keep them coming! (a full color when you ge the time would be very nice to see!) I prob should some b+w . .
Tomasis nice, the cheek/under eye seems just a little underdefined.
July 28th, 2003, 03:41 PM
July 28th, 2003, 08:47 PM
Needs way more work than what I was willing to put into it today.
July 28th, 2003, 10:39 PM
hed|lamb...those are great!
July 29th, 2003, 12:15 AM

Been without home internet for awhile now. Though in my new place, I'm currently using a chest of drawers with a dirty great big mirror as a desk, so I've been doing these rather regularly. @:-)
