Wanted to experiment with something different tonight. Not sure how well it came out, but it was fun nonetheless.

http://members.cox.net/blackhawk9/spod/spod179.jpg

Killing.People - So you do exist? lol. Thanks bud, I appreciate it, I was wondering where you've been.

Endregan - Thank you. Same thing as last one, be careful of the measurements. The mouth especially looks like it could be positioned a little more accurately. Currently the nose and the mouth are throwing the face into an elongated frown. It's a hard spot to measure up, just be very careful as you study it. If you keep missing the spot again, dont' worry, just intensely measure and see if you can get it as accurate as you can humanly possible, then one up it.

ZippZopp - Thanks bud. Nice to see you again. Good expression, tones could use a little softening in spots though. All the value shapes seem too hard, throwing some soft edges in there between value transitions should pop this one nicely. Don't overdo it though.

Keyth - There you are bud. Now POST MORE! Oh, and let's see you mix it up. You have incredible pencil rendering skills, I'd like to see you do one of these in pencil, think of it as a challenge of sorts ;)

endregan
July 1st, 2003, 12:27 PM
yes thanks blackhawk. its just odd cuz the angle im doing it from is looking down at my tiny mirror so it is distorting and the foreshortening makes it look bad. :P. I will keep trying though!

Still only great SP's here .. especially i like yours, Mr.Brian, great. :)

Keyth - LOL. I don't know what I was shooting lasers at, probably all the bullshit I have to go through everyday, lol. Your second July 4th one is stunning, very meaty, beautiful form.

Endregen - Again, be careful. I think your main problem spot is the nostril, mouth area. Your measuring it wrong and it makes it look like your long in the face. A good trick to help with portraits is to quickly lay down some kind of measurement markings, anything that'll help guide you in the rest of the portrait. That way you can get the proportions accurate before you start hitting the details and values.

Duracel - That tiger one of you is badass, love it man.

I.was.ink - Welcome, good to see you posting in this section finally. Good SP's, don't be afraid of the mouth, jaw area. It can be one of the most difficult spots to draw right, but you can never succeed if you don't fail it acouple times. Give it a go.

Jeff Gran, OneBigCelt, HellTaxi - Welcome guys, good to see stuff from all of you, keep them coming.

Sorry I shut the comments short. Again, no mirror tonight, just let my brain do it's thing, see what it wanted to do.

keyth, thx. Your last one is really great too, perhaps a bit dark(-> histogramm) ... perhaps some lighter highlights.
But i really like those warm colors - summer, isn't it? :)

HellTaxi ... dont really like the white-side - but the sp looks fine to me.

I.was.ink ... pink?? ;D

Blackhawk, you've really improved since my last visit. Like the outline and the orange colors. :)

What a shitty weekend.

http://members.cox.net/blackhawk9/spod/spod182.jpg

Duracel - Thanks much. You've improved tremendously too, I've been watching a lot of your speed painting stuff over at Sijun, good work.

Endregan - Some features are beginning to fill out, play with the line weights a bit, experiment a lot, see what kind of effect you can come up with on the form of the drawing. Keep working at it bud.

Dan Milligan - You are a badass, plain and simple. I love this one, I tried to do a mock of it tonight for my own, but things quickly fell apart from the start. You have a great style.

Ilex - Nicely done, Play with those warms and cools a bit, see what can happen with the form and the focus when you do. Nice to see you posting again.

Jeff Gran - You have a great control on the lighting and color, but be careful on the features. Nose form is askew as well as the eye form and placement. Nice work, keep it up.

Night everyone.

don't stress it BH. next weekend will be awesome;)

just like BH said. great job everyone. i missed some days but hey, this is the most SP's i've done in a month for quite some time. i must admit...it's bring'n me some joy(still shak'n off some rust though:p ).

my only question is this: where's OB?

i tried being more conscious of warms and cools. i have to go back in and get rid of the yellowish green on the forehead/nose/chin and just tone everything down but i have to stay away from it for a bit.

http://www.botticeli.com/portraits/2003/07.07.03.jpg

jeff:i like how some of your face is clear and the rest is blurred out. looks like you were rushin with the hair...would be neat to see this effect developed more.

Thanks for the comments, blackhawk. I definitely concentrated on getting the colors right more than I did with getting the form right on my last ones. Today's was in pencil, trying to get a good likeness.

ilex, thanks. I do tend to rush it when I get to my hair...it's just wild and tangled so I don't like to spend time getting all the little hairs going in the right direction. I also like your acrylics, you have a cool style. About your last, you could subdue it and all but I like the colors you have, they give it a nice punch.

Yep, John, this is a really really damn good piece of art to join this community. Welcome! :)

@Elmo, thx. Yep, i have to agree about the blue.
Dont like the white-blurry border in yours. But the overall colorsheme is nice. Perhaps some more different colors in the face to get it alive.

@Nex, yep, i got the point. ;)
I think something is wrong with your left eye .. and perhaps soemthing with your back jaw.

@KOZ
Yeah, cool. Perhaps the blue is a bit too saturated, and i dont really like the large black backgroundparts. But anyway, i really like it, no crits to the face!

@keyth .. hmm, its always the same dark-red colorsituation. And perhaps, some ears would be nice to see next time. :D ;)

Hey.. if it isn't for the cigar boy :D Welcome back Rusty
(that sketch rocks) - lovely line!

johnsaulrubio - nice va;ues and colors. Some problems with the shape though - perspective and all - the right eye seems misplaced and the nose seems also a bit odd (might be the esxpresion thought)
some more attention to the strokes will enhance the overall feeling of it - don't worry - i'll never achieve your skill, but i'm a big mouth :D
(the first one was DOPE)
Keep it up!

daarken, impressive one!
Visited your homepage, your selfportraits are all quite fantastic!
Do you work from mirror?

All others, great work too!!!

Here is my first attempt to paint a greyscale-selfportrait in photoshop.
and, as you can see in the background, i got a new very large second mirror. :)

I should get back into these dailies a little more whole-heartedly. Don't know where I was going with this. I blame it on a crooked mirror.

Okay, here goes my first attempt at a self portrait. The really sad thing is ... it doesn't look anything like me. :( Oh well, I'll get better with practice!

DraigAthar, good one for your first try! It'll be interesting to recognize you better each spod. ;)

Good with the bad.

JohnSal - Thanks. I really dig the expression in your SP, very dynamic, I like it a lot.

Duracel - Thanks

Rusty - Good to see you again, beautiful pencil work.

@Everyone - Pretty much great work all around. I wish I had more time to comment, but I head to work in about 5 minutes here. Hopefully I can be a little more helpful later tonight.

John, great work, impressive expression. ^^

Here is a new one, tried out acrylics first time ever - so my concentration was around this new medium. dont judge me by the proportions and the perspective this time. ;)

Here`s a really quick sketch I did the other day, didn`t bother cleaning up or adding shadow too much. Very loose. Just normal pencil because it`s all I can afford.

yeah been extra special lazy for the summer, making some money at least . . .
Circe nice - makes me want to do another acrylic, too bad I don't have space to keep it permanately setup, would have more motivation then ;)

Duracel nice stuff . . but the trad stuff takes some time to get used to! heheh :)

SinisteR - nice, but in places feels too 'sketchy' I do the same of course, but it's nice to strive towards line control :)

Blackhawk nice keep them coming! (a full color when you ge the time would be very nice to see!) I prob should some b+w . .

Tomasis nice, the cheek/under eye seems just a little underdefined.

Been without home internet for awhile now. Though in my new place, I'm currently using a chest of drawers with a dirty great big mirror as a desk, so I've been doing these rather regularly. @:-)
