I am doing an illustration at the moment, and have just gotten a contract. I would like to ask the writer to get commissions from every book sold, in percentage.

I am pretty sure this is common practice, however I do not know how much exactly. Please, would you advise me of the acceptable rates?

Is the writter offering you a decent base rate? Because royalties are a pain in the butt, they require that someone audits the sales OR that you trust the writter/publisher blindly. If you are just starting, it's usually not worth the trouble to ask for royalties.

Well...the base rate is not crazy high, the job is pencil drawings 8.5" by 5.5"
and it is 75$ per drawing...so i thought to ask for royalties.
I thought perhaps just make the calculations every year, or something, shouldn't be that hard, should it?
