No extreme genital exposure (if not necessary :))
Think of a species which has unique mating/loving/spawning/fertilizing etc ways.
eg. Depp Sea Anglerfish, black widow, deep sea giant squid, Sea Horses etc...look up in google, if you don't know what is so unique about them...

the praying mantis female removes the males head. You know, some species of mantis actually take off the head during the act. The males have a secondary nervous system center that finishes the job. Sort of undead zombie style if you ask me.
Hmmm. zombies.... undead... hmmm.
so, is this topic in honor of its numerical placement as well...? ;)

I have an idea where the female is very large and long-lived, while the male is much smaller and has a much shorter lifespan. The jealous males life on top of the females and are quite territorial. "Mating" occurs when the female releases an egg-like packet of female gametes, which the male ingests and fertilizes, becoming, in essence, a living egg. A short time later, many young hatch, and the male dies.
Here's some doodles.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/doodles.jpg
I also had an idea of a species where one gender lives in the future and another in the past and gametes that can travel time.

Final:
Concept: Kytes of Ileac
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o15/demented_Brendan/BrendanNCOW69UniqueLovers.jpg
The majestic kytes of Ileac never touch the harsh canyon rock they fly above until the day they die. They spend their entire lives in the air, devoid of feet and claws and eyes – instead they rely heavily on sonar, and represent nature foremost exponent of it. This unusual lifestyle called for a highly unusual mating process. The females spawn the eggs internally – up to 200 a year – which are then ejected one by one from her long tail. These unfertilized eggs then free fall through the air, and the blind males are required to fertilize them. During the mating season the skies are filled with “mating calls” – not to attract females but rather to pinpoint the trajectories of falling eggs using sonar. Catching the eggs without breaking them requires the male to dive down after the egg, achieving the same speed and acceleration, and then when close enough gently picking it out of midair with its mouth. The egg is then hoisted up into a shaft in the forehead, which forms a long shaft down towards the creature’s tail. The shaft also serves to fertilize the eggs, which remain at the tip of the male’s extremely strong tails until it hatches. Once hatched, the new born kite jumps from the tail and flies for the first and last time. 96.4% of the eggs, however, are never caught. But thanks to a lack of natural predators/killers the population seems to stay constant.

Paolo13: As far as I am concearned, concept art doesn't necessarily have to be colored at all. I much prefer a strong black and white piece to a mushy colored piece. That is not to say you shouldn't go for colors if you feel the need. Great piece thus far either way!

Cool picture, Brendan N. I like the creature design. It's kinda like a flying narwhal. The background looks pretty cool, too. The creature's horn appears to be coinciding with the edge of the picture, though. Perhaps extend the picture a little to the right to get rid of that tangent.
I like yours too, Woodlandwalker. The description was quite humorous. For the picture, though, I'd suggest adding some harder details, as almost all of the rendering appears to have been done with a soft brush.
EDIT: Here's a little quickie portrait of my creature. I drew nearly two dozen heads similar to this before I found the one that was exactly right. And once again, I seem to have chosen a primary triadic color scheme.:P

The Bouncy Bouncy Bug
The Bouncy Bouncy Bug can be found in the temperate lands of Oogly-Poogly.
The procreation of this strange creature is unique. As the larger female bounces from one spot to the next while hunting, the smaller males (many of them at once) jump up and try and grab her lactoglands to get a sure grip so as not to get jiggled off. Often the first one to get the grip is the one that will impregnate the female, aslong as his grip is strong. While all this is going on the female seems totally oblivious to it.. quite a lot like some human females that I've heard about.

Greetings, this is my first post for creature of the week, I've tried several times to finish on time, but work.... you know. Well, I have these two first sketches for my designs "Unique lovers". I am painting them, but the painting isn't yet presentable. I'll post the finished peices within a few days I hope. But here they are. The "MIND fuc*ers" jk/ the name isn't permanent. The top is the male, and the bottom is the female.
The male draws his head near the open organ of the female, the female's tendrils
wrap around the male's cranium locking them both into position for telepathic
echange energy, or imformation for the production of the egg. Don't le the males appendage fool you, it's merely a trunk like arm trough which nourishment is absorbed.

The Rainbow Rays of Cthu'Elek glide softly accross the skies like multicoloured kites. The tiny males have tongue-like genitals which are inserted into the female's bulb. Unfortunately, this bulb does not let go. After the implantation process, the male is 'pulled' in, and eaten by the female. Eventually, this species shall die out because less and less males will exist.

C.O.W. 69 – ‘Unique Lovers’
The Solace Dragon
Technically a misnomer, the Solace Dragon is actually a recently discovered species of Lizard. These creatures are noted for their bodily fluids and secretions, which serve as highly toxic hallucinogens. These toxins make the standard act of natural mating impossible; literally the creatures would be paralyzed by their own mate –mid act! Because of this, the Solace Dragon has evolved a large, flower like organ on the tip of its tail. During mating season, genetic information is passed from the flower of the male to the flower of the female via the pollination process of indigenous butterflies. Addiction to the hallucinogenic qualities may explain how the Solace Dragon seemingly keeps a ‘harem’ of said butterflies during its search for a nearby female’s flower, and females may even be attracted to the male with the largest harem, or most desirable ‘fluids’. (It is noted that scientist have yet to explain the toxin tolerance of the indigenous butterflies, which appear to be the only ones with immunity.)

Basically all good pics should be posted on the first day?
Personally I feel by posting on the deadline date you give yourself the maximum amount of time to tweak the image to the max. That's what making the most of your deadlines is all about.
And as most of us have experienced, someone may or may not post something at the last minute that outdoes yours, so you have to make sure that it's the best you could do anyway. That's the winning spirit imo. Posting a final way before the deadline means you still have time to work on the image. In which case you are almost always able to do better!
Okay enough rambling for now. I'm still not having a lot of time or good idea's, but I love the time extending into saturday ;)

Basically all good pics should be posted on the first day? No, not at all. All Im saying is, its good to keep your cards untill the end of the run, and then Once you Do attack, And you did your verry best, then its like your unexpected and you just NUKE the thread with something impressive.
If you keep posting your WIP than everyone pretty much know what to expect from you, than again if your tallent and effort is massive than your still gonne be competition nevertheless.
I just really like the ellement of comming in unexpected. Its like war, you dont call the opposite team and tell them when and where the next attack will be, right? ;)
Personally I feel by posting on the deadline date you give yourself the maximum amount of time to tweak the image to the max. That's what making the most of your deadlines is all about. Well ofcourse this is why one should wait, but allot of people will post the whole WIP.
It would be cooler in a way if everyone keep there final work for judgement day.

Insanityart: if you have time and work in layers, and you have the opportunity to change the background color... you might play with making it more of red or bluish tone to pop out your creatures in the foreground more. Pretty painting and welcome :)
As far as the posting debate goes... I'd like to just see more sketches up there early to reveal the ideas. The rendering, I agree, should take all the time you have and doesn't need to be revealed (likewise for subtle changes in the composition etc) I'm bad about posting the idea first.

So, here's the lineart for my creature. The big tortoise-elephants are the females, and the little prong-headed guys are the males. Unfortunately, this may be is far as this picture goes before the activity deadline, as it's really getting towards crunch time at school right now. I'll try, though, and even if I don't finish it in time for this I'll still finish it and post it in the Critique Center or wherever, since I think it has the potential to be my best picture ever.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/metalukesurfer/loveylines.jpg
Brendan N- Looking good! The tip of its horn is still too close to the edge of the frame for my comfort, though.
InsanityArt- Welcome! I like the style and concept. I actually had an idea of a flowering reptile myself, strangely enough. Anyway, I agree with Stephan in that changing the background hue a bit would cause the creatures to pop quite a bit more.
JakkaS- Oh maestro of the CoW, are you planning to do another tutorial any time soon? Or are you at least saving some process shots of your artwork? I ask because when I start a new creature picture and I imagine what it'll look like ideally when it's done, it often looks like it was painted by you. Not that I'd want to completely copy your style. I just want to see how you get that wonderful luminous affect in your artwork.

I fully agree with this too, course sure, where concept artists right, but brainstorming is a major key for going to the "next level". If everyone would throw out some early sketches showing the obvious possebiletys, than people will not just copy this and stay there, most likley one trys to take it further from there, and this way the concept as a whole gets even better.
Lets say with the Armoured Jelly Last week, most people knew the concept was limmited, you could go with scales, rocks, some kind off shell (snail, turtle etc), but where do you take it from there?
If everyone did throw out some early sketches for something like that, Im sure it would open up new grounds of possibiletys.
That was my verry point from the start, that if you have something infront of you, you will try to climb it and go beyond it. And it really helps, the urge to compete drives the stubborn to go beyond their own expectations and take it further.
OK Enough rambling from me! :blahblah:

It makes sense really.. you hold off seeing what other people post, and judge how much more you've got to try to beat that quality. You still may not win but it does give ya the opportunity to see what you're up against.. common sense really I guess.. I still say ''Doh!'' as I posted well early.. still work wouldn't allow me more time.:nohope:
Good luck everyone! :)

Yeah guys, I was just kidding really. The last minute pics are usually good because a lot of time went into them, not because they're last minute.
Also time spent on a piece does not necessarily make it good. It only makes it more rounded. It's up to the artist to make a good piece, not the time he allocates to it!
Theoretically, someone like Marko who works at bulletspeed would be able to submit a winning entry on day 2 or 3 without anyone ever topping him!

The Elecks
These unique lovers when born find love within their own siblings and rest each others heads next to each other. If the Elecks antlers merge within growth then are meant to be, but if they cannot get their antlers to merge they must kill themselves for they will never have a mate.
When the Elecks reach maturity and decide to mate, they must gorge on fruit from trees(their only way of finding food) and then break their spines and hip bones so they can have intercourse. After mating they slowly die as their children consume their nutrients and after 8 months the children begin to eat the left over carcass of the Eleck parents and the cycle repeats.

Davi I like everything but the rose border for some reason, can't say why really.
If anyone is struggling for an "idea" you can steal mine, I was planning on entering but I have that male calender pin-up due by monday :P So here's one idea:
A female creature that eats the male, working it down to her internal female organs. Any time the male gets nervous they orgasm, so the terrifying ritual of being eaten ensures that the male's fertilizer will reach the egg. :) Hope that made sense. Another side note, I was going to suggest that the male is the only animal that can survive the harsh conditions of the female stomach and is passed "live" through the female's dung after fertilization.

It is said there is no known end to the multiverse.
Case in point: every millenia, the Milleniumpoda, an ancient space-bound arthropod of galaxial proportion, manifests when it senses a celestial Oosphere in its proximity. As the Oosphere nears, the Milleniumpoda generates an array of brilliant color welcoming its mate. The next step is uncertain, but our hypothesis is that the Oosphere is engulfed into the mouth of the Milleniumpoda, where it releases millions of 'seed' that spirals down through the segmented body until it reaches the womb where everything from stars to planets, and so forth are formed. At some point, these creations are expressed and dispersed to add to the multiverse.
We've provided an inset in the upper right corner comparing the relative size of the Milleniumpoda and our planet Erf. Erf has been magnified 1:1000 to even show up on this chart.

THE PROMISCUOUS INCREDIBILUS GODENDUS or P.I.G. are easily found in the south part of Italy, where is common the belief that "Quantity" is better then "Quality".
The male, in fear of imminent danger, erects its "body parts" in order to scare incoming predators (sort of a spider sens), and TA DA, the female attacks.

The Xivix
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/neorepto/bucketunusualloversmichaeljaecks-1.jpg
Xivix are highly evolved creatures descended from the earliest life to form in the universe. Xivix have abandoned their homeworld and their civilization billions of years ago, having achieved the ability to exist and travel freely in the vacuum of space naturally. Xivix travel at the speed of light, which completely arrests their aging procress. Xivix stopped reproducing their numbers about 6 billion years ago. Xivix sense the entire electromagnetic spectrum with their powerful minds.
Xivix believe in a universe of infinite variety in infinite combination. They also believe each has a single soulmate, somewhere in the universe: an identical twin made entirely of anti-matter. As the saying goes, if you travel far enough, you eventually meet yourself. A single Xivix may travel hundreds of millions or even billions of light years in such a quest.
When a paired Xivix and Anti-Xivix meet in space, a long psychic courtship begins. Careful not to touch each other, the two aliens exchange the whole of their knowledge and experience in a psionic dialogue that may last thousands of years. When both Xivix and Anti-Xivix are satisfied they know their mate completely, they exchange a single act of affection for one another. Very slowly, in a gentle, mirrored gesture, the twins raise their hands and touch fingers. When the matter and anti-matter come into contact, the two creatures annhiliate each other, allowing them finally to die together and rest in peace.

wizo5454- Thanks! Be looking for it in the critique center in a few weeks, because it's sure not gonna get finished in time for this activity. On top of all the school stuff I mentioned earlier, yesterday I also got a job. So, 20-30 hours less free time per week for me.:S Oh well, I need the money.
Paolo13- Looks great, man! I like the way you rendered the sky and the clouds, and the subtle variety of hues on the creatures' skins. I have two critiques: the spots on the female's back on the bottom picture look more sloppily colored than the rest of the picture, and the color of the grass is an incredibly generic green. Give that grass a little more richness, will ya? A little bit o' yellow might do the trick.
Michael Jaecks- You sneaky King of Pop, you! Posting at the same time as I! Well anyway, great idea for the topic. The concept was very interesting, and quite touching, in a strange way. I was going to suggest to change the pose of one of the creatures, but then I realized it makes perfect sense for the Anti-Xivix to be in the exact mirrored pose of the Xivix. So, nevermind.:rendered:

Hey Maoi: Thanks! Yeah the mirroring thing was interesting, and not as easy as, "duplicate, flop, change colors" on account of light direction. It was interesting rendering it one direction and then the next. I still might spruce up a few things if time allows. Very busy, but still addicted to the red meat of COW. ;)
I really wish you could finish yours, but I know time is precious and in short supply. I can't wait to see what you do with the drawing though... it has great potential and if you work it up like some of the things I've seen in your SB lately, its gonna look great. Davi: you've really worked the victorian china painting aesthetic with this one. I really sort of love how it suits the bizarre deer like creatures. I like the flowers, but I would change them a bit. First of all, china painters lovepainting those one-stroke leaves. Load the brush with two colors, dab and pull. ;) Second, I think the whole flower should be visable and not cropped at the corner. As a child of a china painting mother who dragged me to more craft shows and antique stores than one child should suffer, I know whereof I speak... ;) But even without the changes, I still love it. Its giving me serious flashbacks.

Wow, some great entries up till now. I'm sad to say my laptop videocard blew out today, so Im definitely out. I'll be getting a replacement on monday though. So now I have a lot of free time for some c&c.
WackoJaeks: Nice one, lovely serene image. A few notes though. The creatures look very obviously flipped, you might wanna change some wrinkles here and there to make it more believable. I know the story states they meet their near identical twin, but even identical twins are always different in the details. I noticed you did it a little bit, but its really hard to notice now, you might want to make it more obvious. And maybe change the position of one of the limbs, to give them a slightly more unique pose. But this might be a radical overhaul, which would take some time.
Also, some translucency on the skin between their fingers would be nice. The pink creature's shadows look like a green light coming from below, and the blue guy doesnt receive any green light, so it's kinda confusing. And the contact pic at the bottom looks a bit squashed.
Paolo13: Great image and concept. Some things feel a bit left behind though. The white background is really hurting my eyes, and it also makes your creature pop less. You should try a slightly warm/yellowish grey on the background, maybe even like 10 or 20 percent grey, to get rid of the enormous whiteness. You will see it will make you creatures stand out more. Right now they kinda blend in with the background, and it doesnt really do them justice. And Moai is right about the grass. desaturate is a bit (or a lot) and add some yellow tones, but dont make them to intense. And the little explaining thumbnail with the tree definitely needs more lovin'. Also the blue sky connecting to the edge on the left of the pic looks a bit off composition wise. If you would put a little white (or whatever your new background color will be) between it and the edge, it would feel less cropped. Oh, I'm not sure if you did it on purpose, but female is spelled female instead of feamel. And try to break up the motion blur by erasing some parts with a large soft brush set to opacity.
Redehlert: Lovely and wonderfully colored pic. I think the blue spere should cast more light to the top of the Milleniumpoda's body. Maybe only in the highlights. It looks slightly disconnected now. Also the head of the creature looks a bit like a guppy, which kinda makes it hard for me to judge scale. Maybe some scale reference like planets or nebulea in the front plane could help communicate the scale a bit. Oh, and maybe make the "cow69" a bit purple to blend it with the colors in that area.
Leftyjoe: Looks good, but I need to see more to crit this. The lineart looks sweet though. Keep it coming!
Moai: Too bad you probably wont finish it as it looks really promising. Before you take it further, I think you should fix the female in front a bit. It looks like she's gonna fall over to the left. If you look at big animals like elephants and such, their feet always kinda go to the middle of their centre of gravity. Try flipping the image, you'll probably see what I mean. If not I can make you a quick paintover to show you.
Insanityart: Looking good, the coloring is really spot on. However, it still feels a bit rushed, you should try to blend the colors a bit more. Maybe slap on some small highlights to make the skin more reptile like.
Mackerman: Looks good, but need more to crit!
amer-nazri: This one needs a story! The creature doesnt look like something we might know, so explaining a bit about it will help the viewer connect with it. The creature itself could use a bit more shadowing, and perhaps some less intense colors here and there. Because all the colors are very saturated on all parts, the viewer kinda loses focus on the pic. Also, desaturating the colors a bit will bring your creature more to the foreground. And if you details some parts like the tongue (if it is one) the focus will be drawn to that place, and you can work on your colors from there.
Banhatin: Great job, and somehow a very explicit pic hehe. You do a wonderfull job with you color layers. One thing stand out though, and that's the background. It looks far to unnatural compared to the flower and the bee. A bit more natural shapes would help bring the picture together. Right now it's a bit akward, and the circles (and the angular shape on the bottom for the text) look a bit slapped on and brings the composition down a bit. I think it would help the pic a lot if you put some spirit of the creatures into the background. Maybe add some pollen flying around or something. I really like the creatures though.
Blobs: Wonderful pic and creature, very little to crit here. Just the eyes. They look a bit too much sesame street if you know what I mean. The creature itself looks very natural, until you look at the head, and it turns into the muppet show all of a sudden. That's cool if you intended it that way, I just think it would be better if you could find some time to put in some natural eyes. But maybe that's down to a question of taste, I dont know.
Chuck, mate: Looks sweet, need more.
Brendan_N: Nice pic, I have to say he looks kinda lonely for a lover. Any chance of putting in a female/male companion? I think the creature could use some self shadowing. Also the tail doesnt seem to connect to itself if you follow it through behing the right wing. And some translucency effect on the skin of the wing would be lovely. Try looking at some pictures of bats to see how the lights reacts through the skin. Adding some red/orange tones might help.
Woodlandwalker: haha, disgusting. Ok very little to crit since the focus is more on the concept then the actual rendering, which is nice for a change. The rendering could use a bit more work though. You could add more shadow to the side of the female to round her out a bit more. Also try painting in the shadows/highlights instead of using the dodge/burn tool. They really show. And you learn more about colors doing it by hand.
Jakkas: Need to see more, very curious about this one.
Davi: Nice one, very nice composition. Not too sure about the circle and the roses though. But I see where you're trying to go with it. I love the dynamic pose and the story. Very little to crit actually. Maybe you could add some more detailing to the face/antlers to draw more attention to those parts. The antler of the white one looks like it end up in its mouth, maybe you can highten it a bit. And maybe the colors could variate a bit more, especially on the white eckler, as he would be receiving some bouncelight.

Hey SV: thanks for the second pair of eyes. I always appreciate it.The mirroring... yeah... I think for this one though its pretty important. Its a little more than just being twins... its a ritualized double suicide, in a sense, after very long, evolved life or looking for your perfect mate.... I think of this one as being more like a religious painting than something naturalistic. The green looking like reflected light however was not intentional... green and yellow are always my enemies given the variation in monitors... I'll change that for sure... thanks for the heads up...

while investigating the forest moon of gliese, researchers happened upon a creature with a most peculiar means of procreation. using its pectoral appendages to support itself, it extends its center, hand-like foot outward in an almost gentile manner. the mate then takes hold of the foot with its own and the two begin a gurgling courtship of vigorous shaking. the amusing familiarity of this act has inspired our research to call this creature "the handshaker."

Michael Jaecks- Thanks, pal. You spoke the truth about time being precious. I'm only nineteen and I'm already looking back nostalgically at the carefree days of my youth.:P They really weren't that carefree, but at least I wasn't under any pressure to get a job. Ah well. It's the easiest job I've ever had.
Supervlieg- Thank you, too. I'd noticed that about the leg. It seemed somehow wrong when I was drawing it. Now that you've pointed it out, that female really does look like she's about to topple over. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Oh, and sorry about your video card. That damn technology should just work right all the time, shouldn't it?
Mackerman- I like the idea and the creature design. The rendering, however, needs quite a bit of cleaning up. Erase the color that's going over the lines, and perhaps some of the unneeded lines as well. Also, the female's shadow needs more work. It's too warm and saturated and doesn't really conform either to the female's outline. Also, work on your anatomy. Remember, I'm only harsh because I love ya.<3
Paolo13- The grass needs a little more work (mostly value contrast), but good job adding some yellows in. I hear ya on the "no time."
banhatin- The rendering and the creature design are of the quality we've come to expect from you. But aside from that, it's actually pretty good.:P Anyway, the only real flaw I'm seeing are the scribbly blue lines on the female's rump.
redehlert- Cool idea and rendering. But I think the creature that gives birth the starts and galaxies needs a more unusual head than that. Anyway, excellent job getting its millipediness across. I held a millipede that was about eight inches long, once. Just in case you wanted to know a semi-random fact about me.
The Rest of You- My apologies for not saying anything about your pictures. I'm sure you're all lovely people, and they're all lovely pictures.

POP Bellys
These strange creatures reproduce simply by curling up into a ball and connecting the egg with the sperm, the egg then pops out of the creatures belly and is left to grow on its own. While technically these creatures are A-sexual the dirty buggers like to trade sperm with each other, not for any exciting purpose. Its most likey to just make it that more interesting even if its over in a second. It takes 3 days to grow a new sperm but 4 for the egg.

The Xylarian Needle Crown is a strange creature that spends the majority of it's life anchored to rocks, cliffs or walls. It grows to about 30 cm in length, but can extend it's body up to twice that length in order to spear prey with its' crown of needles. It then uses it's tongue to drain the fluid out of the creature.
It was recently discovered that the creatures engage in sexual intercourse purely for pleasure, and not just reproduction. The male reproductive gland is a hairy sack on its' back that fills with sperm. As it reaches full capacity the gland turns a bright blue. It is at this stage the female pierces the sack with her tongue and drinks the fluid from it. The female will perform the act whether she is pregnant or not, and it appears that both creatures get a sexual high from this act. The male has been observed hanging limp and unconscious after the ritual while the female sways rhythmically back and forth.
More research is being conducted as to the properties of the males sperm. Some hypothesize that it is a natural aphrodisiac.

Desert Queen and her court.
Females of this species are giants that constantly wander steppes and deserts in search for grass and water. Males on the other hand are living in small packs. They are much smaller then the female equivalents. An interesting fact is that they are avoiding females which could trample them. The only exception is during the mating time. Then females are proclaiming they are ready for mating. They are using horns which are connected with their nose, as a result some kind of tube is formed, which is making the sound so strong that it could be heard for many miles. When males are hearing this calling they are rushing in chase for females. Because their size is so different, the only hope for males to fertilize the female is to shoot the sperm direct into the females sexual organs. The nature is making this task a bit easier because males have their sexual organs on their backs. Usually this chase for females (they run because they want to choose the strongest and the most determined males) is very picturesque. In the clouds of dust and sand the whole procession is running through the desert and from time to time blue streams of sperms are shot through the air. Before the ceremonial is finished a lot of males is die of exhaustion or below the females hoofs.

Nice one Jakkas,, as usual. Probably too late to change anything but I gotta tell ya that i really like the original head design alot more. Even though it was just a sketch the larger eyes were more expressive and the horns were more interesting. I think maybe something about the mouth bothers me, not really sure exactly.
