How do I search an old thread, like three or fours years old?

Just click on the search button on the second navigation bar (it's the original forum software navigation bar). A small search tab should open. Click there on Advanced Search. That should give you a bit more options for your search. You could try Find Posts from with A Year Ago and and Older for example. That would at leat filter out all posts from the last year. Of course you still need some search term or the whole filter thing is totally useless.

Edit: And you can for example restrict the rearch to some specific forum section or subforum, blahblahblah, and so on.
