Why do the lights go through all the objects in the scene? Is there a way besides light-linking? to have lights not pass through objects on to others?
heres an example. I want the lantern to only show on the one side that its on and have the lights not effect the other side at all.
thanks

You can use decay regions (under the light effects node) but it can be a bit of a pain to set up. I would stick with light-linking if you can get away with it.
Hope that helps

exclude the shadows and the illumination from all objects in the scene you dont want effected, though that isnt the best solution its quick and sounds like it may solve your problem
if your useing max, its in the light parametes, other programs not sure

if you ask for help don't be such a jerk when someone gives you an answer you may find totally useless. I mean hell what if no one attempted to even answer your stupid question in the first place. Also lights cast shadows! That what they do so if you don't want shadows all over the place then don't use any lights.
