Hi, n00bies! Sometimes it's hard to find stuff on a site you've just signed up at. I'm sure you'll all get used to it quickly. But, in the mean time, please take a moment to review this thread. Have fun!

DOES THIS SITE HAVE AN FAQ SECTION?

YES. It can be found here http://conceptart.org/forums/faq.php with exactly the same info as below. Look at the horizontal text menu bar above for the FAQ other useful links!

HOW DO I UPLOAD A PICTURE TO THESE FORUMS?

As of August 2006, please use the conceptart.org attachment manager to post your artwork (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=74969). This ensures that your art will always be hosted by the conceptart.org servers. Unlike using Photobucket or Imageshack, your artwork will A) Show up as a thumbnail, and B) Never disappear from your thread. (If you want to update or change your art eventually, you may edit your actual post at any time to do so.)

To post your art:

Click "Post New Thread."
Click the small Paperclip icon that appears in the New Thread editing window. It should be near the top center of your editing box. Or, scroll down until you see a button, "Manage Attachments."
This button (or the Paperclip button) will open a pop-up window where you may then use the Browse funtion to find your art on your own computer.
Once you have filled in the field that points to your art, click Upload. (Follow the Artwork Manager's chart recommendations for acceptable artwork sizes and acceptable file types.)
Once your art is uploaded, click "Close" to close the Attachment Manager.
You may now click "Submit New Thread," if you are ready, and your New Post will show your attached artwork.

To remotely host a photo of yourself or other non-artwork related item, or to link to a picture that you don't need to archive here, you can use the image tags found in the New Thread editor. Click the button that looks like a mountain with a yellow sky and little sun to link to an image. Or, if you're a more advanced forum user, wrap image tags around the link to the artwork manually by using brackets.

HOW DO I GET ONE OF THOSE THUMBNAILS TO SHOW UP NEXT TO MY THREAD?

The thumbnail will automatically be generated from the FIRST image attached to the FIRST post in your thread. Use the attachment manager as described above. If you want to change the thumbnail, you must remove ALL attachments from the post and reupload the images in a different order, with the first image being the one you want as the new thumbnail.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY SIGNATURE?

Make note of the 2 links that these yellow arrows are pointing to:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12675&stc=1&d=1155860556
Near the top of your browser, you will see the ConceptArt.org horizontal menu bar. User CP will take you an entire menu of User Options. Here you will find all links on the left to manage your signature, avatar, user title, user profile, etc. Clicking QuickLinks will do the same, only a little quicker.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY AVATAR?

Click UserCP or QuickLinks found in the top menu bar.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY TITLE?

Click UserCP or QuickLinks found in the top menu bar.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY LEVEL/RANK? WHAT'S THIS MEAN?

When you see "Level 8 Gladiator: Thracian" by your avatar and user name, don't fret! These are just fun ranks based on your post count. You can't change them yourselves; they update automatically.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY USER NAME?

YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR USER NAME unless you beg a site adminastrator to do so. A list of people in charge can be found here: http://conceptart.org/forums/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item2#faq_new_faq_item Note: Despite the fact that I've written this Lounge version of the FAQ does not make me a person in charge, thus I cannot change your user name.

WHAT'S A SKETCHBOOK?

CAN ANYBODY MAKE ONE?
HOW DO I MAKE ONE AND WHAT DO I PUT IN IT?

A sketchbook, or SB as many users here refer to it, is exactly what it sounds like: A collection of your sketches. Yes, ANYBODY can start a sketchbook. How? You go to the Sketchbooks section (http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=41) and press Post New Thread. Give it a spiffy title and post your art. You will receive comments on how to approve from anyone who wants to help you out. PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ THE SKETCHBOOK INFO THREAD BEFORE CREATING ONE. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38582)

CAN I USE ANYBODY'S ARTWORK HERE?

Click and READ this for that information: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31861

I NEED AN ARTIST FOR A PROJECT. CAN ONE OF YOU HELP ME?

You will need to post in the Jobs section found here http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12 . If you can't afford to pay an artist for their work, you will need to post in the NON-PAYING Jobs section found here http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=44 . Please read the STICKIES in each section before posting your project.

SEARCHING FOR THREADS / TOPICS / USERS' POSTS:

Conceptart.org has a great search engine! There are many topics here that have been thoroughly discussed. Before making a new post on a common topic, please click the search button on the top navigation bar. You can do an advanced search to search threads begun by certain users, thread titles only, topics begun in certain time frames, etc. Please take advantage of the Search function.

General Information on Digital Art Tablets - by Interceptor
For all the new artists coming to the website :)...

What is a graphics tablet? (http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/aboutgraphics/a/graphicstablets.htm)

Also referred to as a digitizing tablet, graphics pad, or drawing tablet, a tablet is an alternate type of input device that can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, a mouse, trackball, or other pointing device. The tablet consists of two parts, a flat surface for drawing, and a pen, stylus, or puck that is programmed to work with the tablet. Usually, you also get a pen holder, and some tablets even come with a cordless mouse that works on the tablet surface.

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/__data/assets/image/9700/wacom_302.jpg

The most popular brand of tablet, for any use is a wacom (http://www.wacom.com) brand tablet. They come in 3 different classes of tablet, with various sizes...

The cheapest model, best for those who are looking to experiment with digital art, but don't want to drop alot of cash on an expensive tablet incase it's not thier cup of tea...

Graphire (http://www.wacom.com/graphire/index.cfm)

Not so much for digital art, but for business pruposes. East changes to spreadsheet documents and the like.

BizTablet
(http://www.wacom.com.au/price/biz/biztablet.html)

A very basic, small and crude, but ok tablet for beginners, and have a very nice price tag...

Volito (http://www.pchardware.co.uk/wacomvolito.php)

The most commonly used model by artists, both professional for serious art students. Very good control and nive sizes available. They even have a new tablet made for widescreen monitors. Moderately priced.

Intuos (http://www.wacom.com/productinfo/intuos.cfm)

The amazing Cintiq. An incredible machine that allows you to draw right into a screen built into the tablet. Very expensive. When used by a professional, it can be used to make incredible peices of work. Overkill for new artists, or those not too experienced with digital art. To my knowledge, seeing a Cintiq is not a common thing,

Cintiq (http://www.wacom.com/lcdtablets/index.cfm)

Some very popular software, which is pretty much the standard to use with a tablet are Adobe Photoshop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/), Corel Painter (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel3/Home), and growing in popularity, Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6848332&siteID=123112)

Here are some threads that may help you start out when you purchase a new tablet.

Questions about Art theft - by form
Of late there have been several instances of artists here at conceptart posting artwork that is very similar in both application and SUBJECT to another artists' (typically a professionals work).

It is essential that we clarify the proper conduct relating to this:

FIRSTLY
- Conceptart does not condone (for obvious reasons) the direct theft of another artists work. That means claiming their work as yours by posting or displaying it with the intent for others to believe it is YOUR work.

IN REGARDS TO 'INSPIRATION' PIECES AND STUDIES
- Copying the idea or work method of another artist is not frowned upon at conceptart as long as credit is given to the original artist. Studyng the works of professionals and accomplished painters is a great learning tool but it is essential that you are clear about exactly where yur ideas came from.

For those who are not clear about this, an example:

"Heres my latest work - its gouache and pencil....done in about 2hrs.... used an el coro piece for reference on the head and also his technique."

Very simple

A FINAL NOTE TO ALL MEMBERS
In these recent episodes there has also been a case of many members flaming/abusing the members in question. Please be aware that many members simply are not aware of the protocol for posting this type of artwork and may be completely not at fault.... do not take over or spam their thread - the moderators are there to make sure things like that are sorted out. They have the right to post what they wish just as the mods have the right to 'moderate' it if it is deemed inappropriate.

If in doubt point the artist to this thread.

Unfortunately a bug causes inline attachments to appear as thumbnails however there is a work-around.
Having an inline attachment in the first post of a thread will trigger it, as long as you don't, the rest of the thread will work perfectly.

So for now the accepted solution is to use the first post to put a message and the thumbnail for the thread, then add the art in a second post.

Just to clarify, by default attachments appear after the post, inline is when you use the paperclip icon to place it inside the post itself.

Hi there, I am new here and do not really know how all works.
I added two pictures for the gallery on "my site" but all I see there is just the text "VIEWING 1 - 2 OUT OF 2 TOTAL" but don´t see any thumbs or images.
In "my items" I see the two pictures listed but again just as text with [delete] and [update] and stuff but again no images.
what am I doing wrong?

this may be a really stupid question, but is this place only for digital art? or is traditional ok too?

I wasn't sure where to ask this (if I'm in the wrong, you know, redirect me), but on the profile page when I first made my account (relatively new here, haven't posted anything yet) I was playing with the page customizer. In the end I was fine with the default layout, but when I restore the default layout, all the colors revert to 'transparent.' The background and boxes are fine, but the text is all a very light gray and thus is unreadable.

I thought "oh well, easy enough" then went back in to the custom settings and changed the text colors, but now when the site 'refreshes' (I assume it does this every fifteen minutes or half hour or something), it will revert back to the default settings. Any customizing work I've done, or at the very least my attempts to make the font readable again, are wiped away.

Am I missing something to actually fix this problem? Is there a way it can be fixed? Who do I have to ask? Yadda yadda.

To all: You can see lots of threads in this section asking about the gallery part of the website.
If you read those threads, you will learn the answer--the gallery section of the site does not work right now.
Feel free to post your work elsewhere on the site, start up a sketchbook, etc.

grim-gravy: the profile page customizing stuff doesn't work.
oogiboogi: You have to go into UserCP-->Edit Avatar. Make sure you didn't go to UserCP-->Edit Profile Picture. That is not the same thing.

Thanks :)

Hi all. i'm new to this forum scenario and would like some advice on how to make use of the forums so as to make them as beneficial as possible.:confident
I've been drawing/ sketching for a while but this is only on paper, nothing digital as of late but i have a basic knowledge of photoshop and was introduced to the drawing tablet not too long ago by a close friend and attempted 1 or 2 sketches.
i find that my brain is drained coz of work and all so i try improving what i've been given by replicating the work of my friend, great artists and photographs/ pics that i find intriguing. Sometimes i do my thing...but i sway towards dislike regarding my own work (always room for improvement)...
Any advice...???

Hey i was wondering how to change the little header right below Our names in the threads. The place where it says registered user. I want to change it so that i can be cool like all the cool kids. I've looked a number of times, not wanting to ask if i could find it in a thread but i've had no luck.

Go to User CP (listed at the top of the forums). From the list on the left of the page, choose "Edit Profile" (not "My Profile"). There will be a place to add a custom user title.

I have received a response to a question in the Painter forum that was very helpful to me and I want to thank the person using the forum's apparatus for registering such thanks. I have explored the FAQ and the user interface and I have found no way to do that.

I see that some people who have received very few thanks have actually deserved more than they have received, so other forum users may be unaware of how to do this as well. If you enter "Thanks" in the FAQ search, you don't get a result.

"Thanks" in advance for telling me how to do this.

Emily, your answer is very clear... yet I do not see a button for thanking! Could I see a screenshot? Do I have to have a particular qualification or have to have some option turned on? I'm sorry that this is a little redundant, but thank you very much for helping me if you find time. :)

emily g
December 24th, 2007, 10:20 PM
You should not have to turn anything on to see the thanks button, but sometimes it doesn't load for some people and they don't see it.

Note that the thanks button appears on others' posts, but not your own (you can't thank yourself). So that's why there is no thanks button on my post in the image since I took the screenshot while logged in.

Amir the night wolf--you cannot remove a poll from your sketchbook once it has been created.

Karmicserenade--if you are clicking on "upload" in the UserCP (right under My Profile) then that doesn't work. I think it's something that's being worked on. If you want a place to showcase your work, create a sketchbook thread in the sketchbook forum. You can upload your work in the thread using the attachment feature, which is the button that looks like a paperclip.

I first ran across this forum while doing a Google search for, um ... anatomically correct satyrs, centaurs, werewolves and such. It was a link to one such oic that lead me here. But when I signed up the forum rules stated that sexually oriented posts were not allowed here. Is there an adults only section here where this type of material is allowed and can be found? Even posting requests for pics of Medusa in the nude could be considered sexually oriented. What is the proper protocol for this? I do not want to start off on the wrong foot here by unintentionally breaking the rules Any help will be greatly appreciated.:medusachow:

Actually, we're pretty laid back about sexual content here. Just be sure to put some sort of warning (nudity, not work safe, etc) in the thread title so people who want and/or have to avoid such things can.

I successfully posted three images in a new thread last week. I tried to post a single image in another new thread today and I have run into several problems, even though I didn't do anything differently, as far as I can tell.

Today, when I Previewed my Post, I got the ol' Tiny-Blue-Question-Mark Image in place of my image (in Safari).

I then switched browsers (to Firefox) and did the same thing. This resulted in my getting the filename and the size of the file displayed in the Post Preview where the image should be instead of the blue question mark image.

I tried a couple of 'test' posts, using other files, in case my image file had a problem and the same kinds of things happened. When I try to bypass the attachments manager and use the 'Add Image' function instead, I get a URL link to my image (on CA) in my preview, even though it has the appropriate [img] tag in the post.

Even the images that worked for me last week will not work in a new post - even though they are still working in the old post. I'm at a loss.

Hello, I'm new user here but I've been watching all that great stuff which is posted here for some time.

I'm looking for info about artist who paints a lot of weird 'fishmen' and strange forms of sea life, sc-fi vessels in viking theme, he also draw a lot 'dark sepia' pictures. Some time ago I've found his gallery on the net but I can't find it now :(

I guess it's not the best topic to ask that kind of questions, so please move it to the other subforum if necessary.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The pictures are gone because m@ hosted them at another place on the internet and has since removed them from that location.

This is why we encourage everyone to use CA's attachment feature. :)

Sorry to pollute the thread wiv this...

emily g
June 8th, 2008, 07:42 PM
Are you referring to where you put the username of the person who referred you to the website?

I don't think it does much...it might make a note somewhere of the number of people a person has referred.

My question is: What kind of work can I post here (2D -3D) or there is no limit?

Thank you

(i deleted my last post wich was basically just to say thank u, instead of editing it, to post this new request)

Could you help me fix something?
For some reason i have a picture that looks hideous as a thumbnail due to some weird pixels on it, if u go to the sketchbook section now u should see my sketchbook on the front page and there ull notice the red pic im referring to.
This is pretty annoying since i was planning on keeping that very picture as my permanent SB thumbnail...
It seems to me that no other thumbnail was affected by this thing.

Feel free to edit the first post of the thread or do anything that can fix it!

Thanx in advance
and sorry to be so faithfull to this thread hehe...

emily g
June 24th, 2008, 01:27 PM
That happens to other people too--some things just look worse when they are automatically resized.

What I would do is make the thumbnail yourself in photoshop. Resize it exactly the way you want and so it looks exactly the way you want. Then go add it to your post so it shows up as the thumbnail.

SoufMeng
June 24th, 2008, 01:37 PM
Alright!

Its the first time this kinda thing happens to me, and yeah i tried to resize it by myself but it didnt seem to change anything.
Ill just try again or replace it by another pic...

Thank you.

Edit: it just didnt work, i replaced the pic and ive got no prob with that new one tho its not resized...
Ill try to understand this problem later, iv got to log out.

Thanx again emily g.

Hey, I'm new here, and I understand basically how this site works, and want to get started... But I have no idea where I should start. Unlike like other art sites I've joined, this one is a forum, and doesn't have just a gallery where everything goes. Being a very mediocre (at best) artist, I don't want to start posting in the wrong place and look like an idiot. If someone could please kindly point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. ^^

emily g
August 1st, 2008, 02:00 AM
If you want to post a bunch of your images at once, start a sketchbook thread in the sketchbook section.
If you want critique on an individual piece, post it in the Critique Center.
If you have a work in progress that you plan on posting progress updates and asking for advice along the way, post it in the Studies & Works in Progress section.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Hi, I've been trying to find out how I can make my own gallery in here. If it's the upload button in the user cp I only get a "critical failiure" message when I try to use it. I've tried different browsers so that shouldn't be the problem. If there is something else I have to do to create a gallery, will someone please tell me? Hi, I'm real noob here, with a quick question.

I'm an artist and just signed up with a great team in the non-pay section, the thread titled "Indie cyberpunk game looking for artist", I started posting some of my concepts in the thread to help attract interest, and some dude posted an ad for his runescape money in our thread. Is he allowed to do that, or will a moderator take it out if they come across it?

A banner should pop up asking you if you want to edit your gallery. This does not always show up for me, though.

Or, you can go to the main page (www.conceptart.org) and click on "Edit" which should be right between "Forums" and "Gallery."

About the gallery feature, does one have to be of a certain caliber/skill level to create one as with the Finally Finished and Critique Center forums? If I were to make one would it be acceptable to start with finished pieces already in my sketchbook and should I upload works as I finish them to one or the other or both?

Went I upload my images, nothing appears in the text box so i have no idea where my images are going to be placed. Did that make any sense? I've been searching the site for 10 or 15 minutes now and haven't found an answer yet, so I guess it's justifiable to ask now. Is there any way to change the thumbnail for a thread I've posted? Specifically, for my sketchbook thread. I know that normally the thumbnail is of the first attachment in the thread, but it seems like some other artists have different thumbnails.

Thanks in advance!

emily g
February 13th, 2009, 12:39 AM
Shannanigan, I do not think we have a description of the categories listed anywhere.

Swecks, after you upload your attachments, click on the paperclip button again. A drop down menu will appear that lists all of your attachments. Select one and the appropriate code will be inserted into your post. That is how you insert images within your text.

Cacodaemonia, the thumbnail is always created from the first attachment in the thread. If people have something different, it's because they are hosting some of the images somewhere else.

emily g
March 5th, 2009, 09:50 PM
Cacodaemonia, yes, if you edit your post and hit "Go Advanced" and then under the post hit "Manage Attachments" you can remove images.

Some people remove all the images and then re-upload whatever image they want to be the thumbnail.

Hello,

I seem to be having thumbnail problems and I'm not entirely sure why. I had a problem with uploading images into the thread to begin with but that's sorted (I've just linked them to another place I uploaded them to). I've also attached a little thumbnail image to the thread which I'm gathering should appear as a thumbnail, but it isn't?

The attachments also seem to be listed as 8, even though only the one thumbnail I uploaded is visible. I have a feeling I've done something terribly wrong and some help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks :)

ryukin here, got a couple of quick noob questions that I've been wondering about...

1. What's the difference between a friend and a contact?
2. What's the difference between a gallery and a sketchbook?
3. What's the difference between a sketchbook and an album or are they the same things?
4. What's a social group?

Oh, another question I had concerning posting images...
I've read on one thread to go through a image hosting website and get a link but in another thread I've read that you could upload images through conceptart's server? Which is the correct method?

These questions might be really dumb or obvious but I'm totally new to this forum and forums in general.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OK, let's see...
1. Not sure. I think friends show up listed on your profile page.
2. Galleries are a place to show your images. Click on the word "Gallery" at the very top under the top banner. Some of the gallery features seem to be buggy right now....the website is being redone at the moment.
Sketchbooks are threads created in the sketchbook subforum. They are threads where people post their work over time and people can leave comments.
3. Albums are created in the User CP and show up on your profile. I don't think many people use them.
4. Social groups are created around common interests/locations. There are a place for people to chat/share info about particular topics. The groups you belong to show up on your profile. Not sure how many people are using these. Also can be found in User CP.

Upload your images to the site using the attachment feature. When you create your post, there will be a button that looks like a paperclip. Click it and you will get an upload window.

Sketchbook (Forum Section)--keep a long-running thread with your sketches, whatever else you're working on and people comment over time.
Albums--(in User Profile) part of the vBulletin software. Don't think people really use this much.
Portfolio/Art Registry (Forum Section)--this is in response to potential changes in the U.S. copyright laws (Orphan Words Act, which ended up being killed). Makes artists and their artwork easy to find so people don't use artwork without permission by saying they looked for the artist but couldn't find him/her.
Galleries-(Small thumbnails at the top of the forum. Also click on the word "Gallery" right above the thumbnails) custom built gallery feature. Has some issues and bugs that need to be fixed, but still works for the most part.

Three of these are covered in the post right above yours--I don't know if you noticed that.

I can't seem to find the rules about what can and cannot be posted.
Like adult art or things like that?
okay, adult themed art seems to be okay, that much I've gathered. But i guess things like adult art involving children is out of the question, or gore/guro art....
Could someone point me in the right direction so I know where to look?

Finally a ray of hope,{ and contact !!!! oh my god!!!!!}. I have clicked on the "contact us button" and sent lots of emails asking, and pleading for answers to many of these questions. NO ONE seems to be driving that bus. This just adds to peoples frustration. I have sent mails to the admin. many times with no reply,,,, so my question is... Just how do we contact you guys?, { If the contact us button is unmaned, and it certainly seems to be the case.} There must be a secret door somewhere. { Why have a button that says " Contact Us," if it doesn't work?} It's like a door bell that doesn't ring.{ Terribly frustrating!}
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely "love" this site, but when you cannot get answers to your questions it tends to frazzle one to the point of ripping out ones hair,{ a habit I can ill afford}. Could there not be a easy way we could get help? Wouldn't that be a good thing?
Thank god " Tea Monster" came to my aid and helped me, but I don't think it should be that hard to contact you guys. Please, please, please, inform me {"us"}of the correct protocols and procedures to contact you guys if we do need some help or have problems.
I hope I don't sound angry, because I am not. And as I said, I love this site, I am just furstrated by the Nonis-Answerious syndrome.
Please help me save the last few surviving strands of hair I have left!!! LOL

It would be very handy when you look through a Sketchbook with 100 pages, and only every 5-6 pages some art pops up.

You can try fooling around with the Display Modes. It should be there at the top right hand corner of the thread (next to the star ratings).

Hybrid Mode and Threaded Mode will both give you a shortened list of all the posts in the thread. Then all you have to do is scroll through and click a post with a paperclip next to it. The paperclip means there is an attachment in that post.

Of course, that is only useful if the person used the attachment feature. If they didn't, you can still scroll through and click on the posts made by the sketchbook owner, which are likely to have images.
