Hello Conceptart. Im an art student attending Massey University in New Zealand. Please comment upon
my sketch's, be as critical as you want, talk about anything that has anything to do with my art or art in general. Since im in the Southern Hemisphere we have just started our summer break which last for four months and i want to improve dramtically in that space and any comment or critique is gonna help loads and loads and loads.

I'm diggin' the poem illustration, but the nun is also very good. I would say something more constructive at this point; however, from what it seems, you're ahead of me :)

Draw 'em like ya feel 'em.

Interesting style of artwork, I like it reminds me of the "scary stories" series of books from when I was a kid. Pretty neat.

um these sketch's are concepts for a vodoo doll, as is the next.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/el.jpg

I sketched these for a uni assignment. Whats do you think of the aesthetic? to proportions, what does it remind you of, how could i improve them?

JERI
October 20th, 2006, 11:29 PM
Hey there fellow Kiwi.

I don't know which direction you're going with the aesthetics, I can tell you though that I personally find the overall shape and shading in these two visually appealing.

Proportions in the first one looks fine. With the second one I think his (her?) eyes are a bit too far apart.

I don't think they remind me of Voodoo dolls very well. I don't know the exact criteria you have for your assignment but you might wanna exaggerate and draw attention to the stuffs associated with voodoo dolls. Maybe have him/her holding a giant spike (instead of tiny needles). You might wanna make your character look less human and resembling a doll more (textile skin, button eyes, vacant eyes, etc) - just to make sure people can easily tell what it is.

Just my two cents - hope that's relevant.

thanks jeri. sorry i didnt go into detail about those last two. We had to illustrate a short lymric which had this vooodo girl charactor as the central protagonist. However the story was a metaphorical one and its underlying story was about how this girl could not love anyone because as soon as she held them close voodoo needles in her heart would be plunged into her deeper.. well its a bit long winded to explain but basicaly we were meant to make our charactors implicit and not to be overt about the metaphorical appropriation of the voodo girl charactor to represent the lovestruck girl. in other words our charactors were meant to be inbetween'ers

Lymric as in limerick or a typo of lyric?

Inbetween huh? Guess I can't be of much help because my knowledge of symbolism is very limited. If the assignment demands a degree of implicitness then I suppose you will be graded on how well you can convey the background of this character subtly right? You probably have to look up on some example of symbolism in romance/voodoo.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hey i just clicked your from NZ aswell. missed it in your first comment. Thats cool i only know 2 other NZ'ers that are ca memebers

yeah your right jeri symbolism was definitaly key. I actualy canned the assignment option because and my tutor had disagreements with 'how subtle is to subtle' and instead illustrated a different story. but i posted these more because i felt they were a little different from the other images posted and kinda gave a more rounded impression of what i do and what I like to draw.

I had a look at some of your work quickly. wicked stuff man im glad to get some feedback about my work from you.

By the way yes 'lymric' was a typo bcause i cant spell to save myself. I was meant to type limerick ofcorse

-CHIKO

thanks man i just had a look at your sketchbook and you have an awesome style, its cool seeing your imrovement from one end of your thread to the other. Dont know if you've already heard or if you'd be interested but Imagine FX has a comp going where you have to illustrate a situation from Naruto. i think you could do well. If your intested im sure they will hae somthing on thier site about it.

nice illustrations here.DOn't worry about posting bigger pics so that we can see them better.Nice pencil technique, but about the proportions, i know it might sound boring but you need to do studies.Loois books are supposed to help n that side.If you want to study muscle masses, than check out Hogart books.Anyway, good start for a sketchbook, keep it up ;)

As Gnoll said I wouldn't mind seing some of the stuff a little bigger.

The Gnoll - Thanks man good point, i actualy have no way of doing a nice job on my faces if i am just doing guess work with the muscles structres. i did learn i bit of that like a year ago but unfortunitally i did like 6 months of basicly straight graphic design and no drawing so i kind of got out of practice a bit. will look into those books, thanks

Voraz- HELL yeah i am defintally going to keep on posting. im setting myself a target of 3 hours of drawing a day. and yeah i should just post my images a bit bigger in the first place. i was just making them smallish because i didnt want people to pike out of looking at my sketch book after the first few images had loaded so i tried making them take up as little space as possible without making the images crappy, guess i didnt get that balance right eh

Anyway here is another little wacom paint. Um it is going to be part of a large composition that will be centred around a pied piper charactor but i thought i would just chuck this out there and see what people thought before i go spending ages on the rest of it.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/thestylisedpiper.jpg

P.S.
I used the texture that El Coro posted in the Ca members exclusive forum in the skin,, just subtley but i think it made alot of difference, if anyone reading this hasnt right click saved it yet then i defintally recomend it, its a very versitile texture and defintally helpful

You heard, or a fan of Wesley Burt? Your last one reminds me of him, which is awesome.

Hey! i love your work... its the kinda controlled observational stuff that i can only achieve in the right mind set... otherwise my hands just usually settle into a much messier kind of style... i get lazy.. so yes therefore very inspirational!!
i really like ur earlier characters.. the girl. i think you should work with some really different compositions too.. the REC one is really effective..

Yeah i am just pluging out some drawings, trying to gather momentum and realy get productive but improving upon my refinement is a goal of mine.

Giricocola: Thanks for the nice words. I like the rec one too and im now having a go at more complicated compositions. P.s, is your avatar a photo of you?

i would like to see a bigger more complicated composition surrounding the pied piper character... sort of inspired by the boat one by Wesley Burt? u could come up with something really surreal...

p.s. yes my avatar is me... how come?? ;) :P

I really like how you keep those pencil hatches neat and defined. Man everybody here makes pencil rendering look so easy. What pencil (s) do you use btw?

About that Pied Piper, don't know what the exact criteria is but I can tell you that he looks well-drawn and well-designed. Definitely packs personality. you need to finish up on the eye though.

P.S am working on completin the pied piper scene right now so hope to post it in the next few days

It's been so good to have you as a friend:
As sweet and rich as honey-colored sun
Slanting steep across a summer lawn,
Gilding life with all that love can lend.
And now that you yourself have griefs to tend,
I want to be the strong and caring one
To count to you the lovely things you've done
Until these troubles pass and sorrows end.
You are so beautiful in form and soul
That you bring happiness to all you're near:
Just as a sea rose, flowering in mist,
Makes a paradise of some bleak shoal,
Turning truth to something far more clear,
No pain unsoothed or rain-swept cheek unkissed.

Err..

Hey matt,
You are getting too good dude. Your pencil rendering skills are becoming seriously skilled, I'd love to actually own something like that girl cutting through with the scissors.. I've seen it on your mantel! it looks rad.
I think one day we should do some kinda art trade where we give eachother hardcopys of finished works, I hear thats what all the cool artists do.
I guess the main crit that I could give would be for you just to simply do more finished stuff, not necessarily digi paints but stuff like that chick with the scissors, Stuff that shows off full body anatomy and the fact that you can draw/paint and design really well. I think people give lotsa respect to artists who can draw anatomy credibly and its real important in Illustration, so work which flaunts your talents in those areas is always good.
Although I say that I dont even know what Line of work you plan on getting into after all your schooling is all said and done, perhaps you dont give a shit about the sorta work I was speaking about above.
Anyway, keep on doing what chu do and reply in my schizzle when I update it.. enjoy the poem that I stole from the internets.

This drawing was started because i wanted to draw a nike airforce one, but half way into the shoe i realised shoes by themselves are not exciting at all. so i decided to put a topless women with tattoo's in there. The womans a study from a wes burt drawing so the two main object are bit of pop culture recontextualised. Also i have included a little tribute to the Wooster Collective's big street art show that was recently shown in NYC.

ok just before you posted that link i had a half an hour go at frantically jotting down a no ref paint on Photoshop, trying to be more fluid and considered with my brush strokes, no day dreaming. It came out crap.

Heya! You work is very strong and iconic, and your pencil renderings are ace too. Yeah, using a pen tablet takes time to get used to....why don't you try out cel-shading? Where one colour jumps to another - no blending.

Designboot - thank you for the compliment. though your favourite is actualy just a montage of all the pencil drawings i had recently done at that stage

destin apocolypse- thank you

undergroundsean - thank you

Naomiful - thank you heaps for your comment. yes i copy wes Burts Style, no im not subtle about it. I do draw from life alot. I am Taking Life Drawing Two at Design School and i am also doing a paper that is very much the same only it deals with architecture rather than the human form. I need to post some of that. I think im starting to work some of my own mannerisms into my drawings which are under the wesley burt style but i think i need alot more time to try different things and learn different styles before i develop my own.

Quicksilver - Cheers. Yeah my wacom skills are not coming to me naturaly at all. i am prepared to put in the work, first I might try to get oil painting down and then move on to i digital medium. i am taking digital illustration next simester so hopfully i can use that time to realy study.

Here is some stuff i did receintly for an assignment for school

Great updates, more partial to your pencils myself, but youve got to try new things, otherwise you dont improve and learn. Cant wait for more.

Gleeson
April 16th, 2007, 06:49 PM
Envisor: yeah i am also more partial to my sketch's but ive decided i cant just concertrate on one little facet of artistic skill while everything else falls behind so im concertrating on my paints, digital and hand done. So yeah trying to grow, trying new things, its been frustrating because i suck at painting but its been fun

This is a quick tesselating pattern i made for ideas and development for an ep i am bout to design for This City Sunrise.

oh i like the tessalating image- you have a strong graphicy kind of style which is great! its a shame that you didnt get the digi paint in on time, but the right arm seems a bit dodgy, and i think you could work some more into the umbrella
nice update though

Interesting stuff. Its interesting to seeyour art form develop but where your style is going is what really has be thinking. I'll try to stay tuned.

LeFran - thanks for the kind words. To be honest im horrible at painting, i quickly give up and i loose control of shapes and stuff. The paint was rushed so the umbrella was 'stylized/made black to save time, i would have liked to give it some creepy highlights but ohwell

Designboot - thanks dude

Nicorave - Thanks. My style isnt realy 'developed' its more ive had to do graphicy stuff for projects so my pencil and papers have been sidlened. i was also freaking out that i was hiding behind one facet of artistic skill [drawing] and after having a go at a go with a wode range of styles i realized i was hiding behind that, but for now im comfortable with that. will learn over time

this is not the best update iver ever done but hey there is more coming soon.
this is a snippet of a character that appears in a strip im doing for a project

this is a painting i did on wood that i got from the dump store, its a terrible photo

and this is a painting i did of iggy pop, i tried making him look all raveged and zombie like, hense the green skin and the clouded eyes. i suck at using acrylics so this was a challenge for me

Wow your design is crucially nice.. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/photooffinal.jpg this is my fav, haha. I also love the way you're handling your figure studies in a unique way, they're all stylized cool n stuff w/ the colors. Great progress ~!

Sabe2003: Thanks

ok this is the first pencil drawing i have done in a while. Its a self portrait, its a bit rusty. Ive never realy done an expensive self portrait before so it was an interesting experience

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/selfportrait.jpg

These two are just a couple of quick paints from my life drawing class using inks. If you notice my anatomy is horrible heres a reason for that: we are painting 'in an attitude'where we have to distort the figure in some way. The first ones un touched but because of the shitty quality of the second one i had a play around with the colours.

I know this has been mentioned before but... seems like you are getting a bit too inspired by wes burt... this one inperticular http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/everybodyneedsair.jpg ... actually inspiriation is one thing but downright copying one one of his sketches and then not even mentioning his name is art theft in my opinion.

You seem to have talent though, so why throw that away by copying other peoples work?

Archipelago- fair enough. Im not embarrised about copying a study from an artist, just as i wanst embarrised when i was 10, copying dc charactors. About 8 months ago i went on a bit of a mission to sit down and realy sort out how i draw and how i can make better decisions as i am observing and taking down information. Studying some of wesley burts work has helped me alot, im realy happy with how far my pencilwork has come. In the drawing you pointed out the lady is a wes burt study, recontexturalised, but a study of his work none the less. As for crediting him you have made a fair point and ive now put a more lengthy description next to the drawings concerned.

Ermac - Cheers

This is a progress shot of a digital paint im doing. The idea is that im creating a cover to the graphic novel of Children of men. My anatomy is realy idealized at the moment but i am just shoving stuff down i will sort that out

This is an exersize i had to do in class. It involved choosing an artist that pre dated 1945, choosing a piece of thiers, cropping a swatch out of that piece and then copying it as best you can in a 2 hour time frame, i broke the time by a little bit.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/Johnsingerserantswatch.jpg

This is a scene i had to create for class. I had to illustrate the point where the castle comes into view in Stokers book: Dracula. I had alot of fun playing with colour with this one
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n301/matthewkierangleeson/finalimagepost.jpg

and this is a drawing of a dog i did, it has a little bit of colour and highlights added in digitaly

hiya!

That head study excercise from your class is cool. Just a suggestion though, you could tweak the colors a bit so its a little more lively --the colors are a bit less vivid, But awesome work anyway!
Those inks are great, too! What did you use for those?

Gleeson
September 27th, 2007, 06:06 AM
Dished - um it depens on what inks your talking about but i think your probly talking about the ink over of that building. I used metalic inks, just cheap ones, winsor & Newton. They are awesome because they give you such a vivid wash of colour.

Heres some self portrait stuff

this is a drawing I've had a play with in photoshop, i printed it off and gave it to my friend for her 21st. Im planing to enlarge it, light box it and make a painting out of it. Very James Jean Inspired. Im getting really behind in the subject this drawing is meant for: sequential art - basicaly comic book writing, ive got ambitious plans, will post more.
