View Full Version : SPECTRUM 14 Call For Entries!

Irene Gallo
October 9th, 2006, 11:59 AM
The new Call for Entries is up on the Spectrum website:

They are starting a new category for concept art -- anything relating to games, movies, commercials, etc. This work had always been excepted but it was grouped in with "Institutional." I'm excited at the prospect of seeing more of this work in-print now that it has it's own category.

Irene hooked me up with a preview of Spectrum 13 before it comes out later this month and it's overrun by us CAers. Let's make 14 even better. The judges this year are all very cool people and are totally dedicated to seeing the best quality work get the recognition it deserves. As the website says "Make their job HARD! The more quality art that is entered, the more difficult the selection process — and, ultimately, the more definitive the Spectrum annual becomes. Let’s make this jury sweat!"

Deadline is January 26th.

This next one is going to have some stiff competition!

Does anyone know if I can enter pieces with marvel characters or anything like that? The work is for my portfolio and done while in college so I'm not sure if I can enter it. Same goes for SoI and other competitions. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Voodoochile - UNLESS you did the work for Marvel ie. it was commisioned by them and you have permission (by them) to enter it....

NO, you cannot

I have a question though...I'm sure it says somewhere on the forms, but do you get a copy sent if you're in the book?

Yes, you do. Sometimes the contributor copies are even the hardcover edition.

yup.
the fenners are pretty generous that way.
often, the cost of the book is more than the entry fee.
so, essentially, it costs THEM money to have you in it.

Yeah, I know it should be that easy. But I wouldn't want to submit something which I had done just for that purpose...I'd want it to be a commissioned pro piece, & unfortunately I don't seem to be considered a cover artist(all the 'comic' entries I've seen in Spectrum are covers) by Marvel so I don't get to do them. Plus, I think the entry might have to come from Marvel not me.

Nic, your pieces look great in the annual. and you were afraid you're not gonna make it in last year.

Staz - there's a section for comics.

What, like sequential stuff? I've only ever seen comic covers in there.

I think it's ment for sequentials. ]I've seen some pages here and there. mostly from frank cho

Staz--

There's definitely been some sequentials in there. Sometimes it's more from the "painterly" guys (Kent Williams, Joe Jusko come to mind) but I pulled out Spectrum 12 and there's at least 2 pieces in there that are full pages (one in B&W) and a third that's just 2 panels from Charles Vess, also B&W. It never hurts to try!!

Now, what to submit....

Staz,

Not that its my business, but who cares how other people view your work (well, to an extent). Your work is fantastic, definitely Spectrum material! Even if you did something "just" for Spectrum it would be cool. We all know you're a pro... you don't have to prove it in an annual.

Hope this comment isn't out of line.

Best,

-K.I.D.

P.S. This year will be my first attempt at getting in. I don't really expect to make it in, but I'm going to give it my best. Good luck everyone!

its not that they dont like sequential,
its more likely that people dont submit them.

remember, juried competitions are not the best of the best,
they are the best of what is submitted.
so do it!

two years ago, someone could have complained, "there's no concept art in spectrum".
but then, MB submitted and they won a silver medal.
now, there is a whole category just for it.

and, btw, the artist can submit on their own.
you dont need marvel to do it for you.

You got one because you did a shit-load of work on the exhibit.

....and in 2009 we'll be counting on you.

We'll be doing the second Spectrum Exhibition at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in September 2009. It will be a selection of artwork curated from Spectrums 11-15...so, get your work in now!

the institutional and unpublished sections are both places where people put in self promotional and portfolio pieces. Y'know, it could lead to doing cover work to have a piece in.

I wish it was. The last one took two years to put together...about a year and half of that was solid full-time work. (On top of our normal full-time jobs!) Although I  artists, they are not the easiest bunch to get organized.:sadcheerleader: I'm hoping/praying/pleading that it will be easier this time since we now have a model to follow. :muscle:

Spectrum 13 has a nice two page report on the last one...You can see a few CAers in the pictures. Thank you, C&A Fenner!

I've only submitted once and it didn't make the cut. I'm used to rejection so I'll have to try harder this time around. But everybody keeps getting better faster than I do, so it's gonna be even tougher to do something worthy! Hehehe :D

It's only a matter of time. This is why I wanted to make sure you were working at printable resolutions... just in case.

:bashful: Awww, thanks guys! Now I'm all embarrassed.

I admit it, I've sinned: I've been guilty of not working at printable resolutions. Unfortunately, that piece is one of the ones I worked small on - it's so hard with a slow computer to do anything that's reasonably sized. Also, that pic's got some other problems anyway (it didn't even win CHOW that week!).

But don't worry, I'll submit something. And every year after that, until they let me in ;) Anyway, I get enough of a contact high off seeing all my fellow CAer's pieces get in, it almost eliminates the pain of rejection. Almost ;)

BAD GIRL! *smacks virtual knuckles with virtual ruler*
Seriously, even, say, 1200x1500px would give you something that could be upsampled without totally turning into mush without slowing things down too much.

um, yeah bluefooted, you gotta submit that piece.
so that's what four, five votes so far from this thread?
do it!
i can totally envision that in there.

by the way, thanks for the heads up irene, it's good to know a good amount ahead of time so i can work on stuff to submit.
i got a promo mailer for the SOI competition and it came the day that entries were due. come on!
granted, it could've been the post office's fault, but still a disappointment.

Just so you know, the SI deadline is extended to the 20th, so you've still got a week if you want to enter anything.
