I simply LOVE the fact someone just stepped up and took over this thread without an admin. The cats away, so the mice will play. LOVE IT.
And thank you for picking a topic we'll all enjoy whether we participate or not.
Now I'm gonna go watch the Harryhausen movie of the same name. That movie kicks ass.

Pirithous' Battle with the Centaurs
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i85/guastaferro/Battle_Final.jpg
Pirithous was the king of Lapiths, and the son of Zeus. Pirithous and his frind Theseus were known in legend as "the strongest men that Earth has bred, the strongest men against the strongest enemies, a savage mountain-dwelling tribe whom they utterly destroyed." Among the guests at Pirithous's wedding to Hippodamia were the centaurs, who, after havig too much to drink attempted to carry the women away. Fighting ensued and the Lapiths defeated the centaurs.

Hey, you only opened this thread yesterday. Give it some time, people have to find it. I haven't checked the other thread, but is there a link to this one in it?
Anyways, i drew a gayish greekish dude in my sb i drag around everywhere, but since i was at a book convention all day and didn't have any time to doodle around and then i was too beat to think of any jason.... i need more time.
So, i hope to post something later this week, as soon as i've figured out what the argonouts are again and what i'm supposed to do with them. Was Jason the same guy who got the goatskin? Anyway, thanks for giving me a good excuse to read myths again.
Thumbs up for the initiative btw. Keep at it, cos i'm too lazy. ;)

"no one seems interested"
BAH! Maybe if you're going to do the CHOW, you could actually post the thread in the the CHOW area so people know that it exists. This is the challenge arena, not the community activities. For some people the challenge arena is like cage-fighting, and the community activities is like playing checkers.
no one is going to go to a cage-fight to play checkers.
the community activities needs mod-powers to post or whatever sooo..uhm find a mod?

Orpheus from The Argonauts.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8448/evildiscochow39orpheusdr5.jpg
The Argonautic expedition
Despite Orpheus's Thracian origin, he joined the expedition of the Argonauts. Centaur Chiron had warned Argonaut leader Jason that only with the aid of Orpheus would they be able to navigate past the Sirens unscathed. The Sirens lived on three small, rocky islands called Sirenum scopuli and played irresistibly beautiful songs that enticed sailors and their ships to the islands' craggy shoals. Once shipwrecked on the rocks, the sailors became supper for the Sirens. However, when Orpheus heard the Sirens, he drew his lyre and played music more beautifully than that of the Sirens, thus drowning out their alluring but deadly song.

2006:
It is time again.
These are desperate times. Times of uncertainty and tragedy.
A world of dismay and corruption is calling out for help.
Crying out for heroes, once again.
Summoned by Zeus himself,
Dead or alive, these once revered men of legend,
Must keep a promise Taken in the days of the ancient.
Dead or alive, these men, now forgotten,
Must take upon themselves one last task.
On the battleship "Argo" Lead by a heavy medicated Jason, and an emotionally crippled Hercules,
these men, merely ghosts from a dead past, set out on one final mission
For the sake of all human kind.
It is time again.
These are The Argonauts.
Things are about to get ugly.

Hey Chuck..there's some great drama with Herakles (this being greek lets give him the greek name).... he signed on with Jason as resident hero, bringing his boy-toy with him. He and Jason had a rowing contest (which leads one to believe jason was a bruiser too) just a jason collapsed with exhaustion, herakles oar broke. They land on an island to cut a new oar and the boy toy wanders off wit hthe local dryad. Herakles goes nuts and starts to tear down the place and Jason and the argonauts leave him there and run off paniced......great choice lots of scope for imagination!

Here's my WIP for this week's entry. My chosen person is Medea, who in my opinion is one of the greatest female characters in literature. Most folks seem to despise this poor woman, but I think she's just plain amazing.
I plan to do this one in a style similar to Joshua Reynold's "Portrait of Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse." It's one of my favorite paintings.

well here we go
in honor of this becoming the official chow (wtf Howd that happen hahah do i have to post the poll thread now???)
here is my wip of peleus
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/trevorclaxton/Peleus.jpg
here is the wikipedia entry about him
i am putting him with his two prized horses balius and xanthus
the horses are just blocked im planing on making them look supernatural
i liked the idea of him because he is a bit of a blank slate
In Greek mythology, P?leús (Greek: ??????) was the son of Endeis and Aeacus, King of Aegina, and father of Achilles.
Peleus and Telamon, his brother, killed their half-brother, Phocus and fled Aegina to escape punishment. In Phthia, Peleus was purified by Eurytion and married Antigone, Eurytion's daughter. Peleus accidentally killed Eurytion during the hunt for the Calydonian Boar and fled Phthia.
Peleus was purifed of the murder of Eurytion in Iolcus by Acastus. In Iolcus, Peleus lost a wrestling match in the funeral games of Pelias, Acastus' father, to Atalanta. Astydameia, Acastus' wife, fell in love with Peleus but he scorned her. Bitter, she sent a messenger to Antigone to tell her that Peleus was to marry Acastus' daughter; Antigone hanged herself.
Astydameia then told Acastus that Peleus had tried to rape her. Acastus took Peleus on a hunting trip and hid his sword, then abandoned him right before a group of centaurs attacked. Chiron, the wise centaur, returned Peleus' sword and Peleus managed to escape. He pillaged Iolcus and dismembered Astydameia, then marched his army between the pieces.
After Antigone's death, Peleus married the sea-nymph Thetis and fathered Achilles by her. As a wedding present, Poseidon gave Peleus two immortal horses: Balius and Xanthus. Their wedding, however, was also the beginning of the quarrel that led to the judgement of Paris.
In an early and less popular version of the story, Thetis anointed the boy in ambrosia and put him on top of a fire to burn away the mortal parts of his body. She was interrupted by Peleus and she abandoned both father and son in a rage, leaving his heel vulnerable (a nearly identical story is told by Plutarch, in his On Isis and Osiris, of the goddess Isis burning away the mortality of Prince Maneros of Byblos, son of Queen Astarte, and being likewise interrupted before completing the process). Peleus gave him to Chiron, on Mt. Pelion (which took its name from Peleus), to raise.

Autolycus was the son of Hermes, hence the Praxiteles ref. Any crits on where I've gone wrong would be greatly appreciated.

ok What does Peleus have to do with jason and the argonauts? --- nice sketch btw... Horses too!
Autolycus was a theif son of Hermes, and the grandfather of Odyssus, He was, an Argonaut.. every adventure needs to have a thief along. But is a thief son of Hermes a bulky naked bruiser with a sword and helmet? I would think the big greek helmet would make snealking a little difficult/ ;P as well as being really white...you'd have to hide in snowstorms
Senira-- Go for it....hard to feel sorry for Medea, but she did get some rough treatment. I like the part about disappearing in a cloud of smoke on a chariot pulled by dragons.

Dang Trev, like that look, very nice colors! I like the way your taking this, very calm, especially when this dude had so much turmoil in his life. One small crit is that his right arm seems a little too buff compared to his body, mostly in the shoulder/bicep area. Its a very very tiny tiny crit tho, cause it looks great how it is. His torso and neck give the impression that hes a strong, lean dude....see what others think tho! Great!
Chuck - very cool look so far. Im always impressed at how your stuff turns out. Cant wait to see this one finished!
DonJonSwan - definitely check some anatomy. Find a pose you like online or in a book and reference it. It looks like it will turn out well!

Thank you all for the kind crits, I will color it up and grab some other reference pictures to clean up the anatomy.
As for the helm... "Autolycus stole the cattle of Eurytus and the helmet that his grandson, Odysseus, eventually wore during the Trojan War."
So I dropped in the idea of a flashy helm, maybe he stole the sword too, and if he taught Hercules how to wrestle I'd imagine him having a little bit of girth to him.
You're right though, he isn't coming off as a blatant thief... though the good ones usually don’t :)
Thanks again everyone for your thoughts and time!

Ohh, really wonderful composition, Made my day, Jska. Body language is precious. And it was great moment for me personally when I recognize the dragon being lullabied by Medea. Awesome, awesome imagination. I just would prefer the dragon snout to be more interesting and precise, it is a bit comical now, in my opinion, spoils the moment a bit, I would prefer something more dramatic or hypnotising.
Kind of surprised by your interpretation of the Medea. She looks like a lovely girl in your piece, she was made of steel in the myth, passionate but scary, Jason eventually sort of dumped her. But nevertheless, I like the emotion you gave her.
Looking forward to see how you will work at it more. I love it already very much.
P.S. I would like to add, that it would be very important to make the back of Jason very nicely drawn, it kind of center of composition, should be really good. I would suggest make the lines of his back more elegant and smooth and make this curve of this waist more flexible, finer. Hips making this twist is really great in the image, IMHO.
Lamb hide will be probably wonderful in the end, glowing. Would be great if you increase that feeling of silence and precaution in body language of everyone, especially Jason.

NICE!
Id worry a little about the tree tendril that lies on the horizon line..kinda makes the perspective a little weird....
yeah Idin't actually pull up a Ship's roster for the Argo..Iwas trying to do it from memory.....I'll take your word on Peleus.. durn if it doesn't say Theseus was an argo naut (although it may have been a different theseus) but we can be flexible...apologies all around. although I really like the second pic a lot better anyway ;P
maybe autolychus is the tricky Akido kind of wrestler rather than matching Herakles brawn for brawn

sve - thank you so much for your lovely interpretation! I agree with the back of Jason, I want to make him look young and elegant and flexible, but the arm bothered me a lot so I have changed it. Let me know what you think. I really gotta get my hands on some back muscle reference... this was drawn from memory so far (yikes) ... I am going to make the dragon glow as well, as he is sung his own kind of lullaby - but also make him look like he might wake up at any moment. So, its gotta be in the eyes, probably... we'll see!
chaos - i should thank you for having me start over! haha ;)
sve
August 29th, 2006, 03:16 PM
Well, colors are a bit brighter after change than I imagine for the silent moment. I kind of like the face of the Jason in the first version, more classic feature, in my eyes. Now he looks like boy from 'hood, sort of. local trouble. Maybe he was exactly that. But I imagine him brunette and more sophisticated. After all Medea lost her mind and heart (if she had one) because of him and helped him against her farther, he was convincing enough.
I would suggest to avoid boxy forms and square lines. Everything should be roundish and soothing and comforting in the picture, in my opinion. The hide should be probably the most brightest spot in the picture as I see it. You don't have to listen to me though. You, not me came with this great composition.
But if you are willing to listen, heheheh. I'm against his arm resting carefree on the tree branch. I think he is alert at least if not scared to death. No relaxed muscles in any character, all tense, except the dragon, he can be blowing pink happy bubbles from his mouth , IMHO.

OK. I spent some time today (more time than I should have) brushing up on my Argonaut mythology and comparing various lists of Argo crewmen and key characters. I put together a list for my own use with very brief descriptions (there often isn't any description other than lineage for most of the characters) so I could decide what I wanted to work on. I thought I'd go ahead and share it with the rest of you in case it's helpful to anyone.
I don't certify the accuracy of this, I just tried to eliminate characters that only appeared in a single source, and I included characters that seemed to have more of a backstory or presence in the mythology.
Hope this is helpful.

Evildisco: Thats only a pencil drawing and already like where its going. It really reminds me of the anime series called Reign: The Conqueror. It was produced by the same people who made Aeon Flux. Look up the series if you havent seen it. The drawing style alone is worth the look and similar enough to your own that youd enjoy it.

Argonaut Shock Trooper
Dispite they're appearence, the Argonaut Shock Trooper is one of the most feared opponents in the battles of the outer systems.
As every society needs shepards, it also needs butchers. When the tide of battle goes against the Ageatian Empire, the warship Argo and its divisions of troopers are deployed. Cities, continents and even planets have been layed to waste in the wake of the Argo.
The Argonauts adourn themselves with ancient armour and leathers, upon which can be seen references to the ancient greek myth from which their name derives, although the significance has been lost in time.

No more lurking on these CHOW threads for me! I've decided to take part. Just too much fun to pass up.
Greek mythology is one of my favorite topics. Ever since I picked up the book by Edith Hamilton waaaaaaaaaay back when I was a wee lass, I've been hooked. And Atalanta is one of my favorite characters.
In some versions of the story, Jason didn't allow Atalanta on the journey on some others, she was present. If this is set in the future, I'll say she was definitely there.
This is my placeholder.

chuck - i love your stuff, its nice to see the WIP... your finished product always looks so crisp!
prophet - digging the sketch, i like the heavy crabby claw type armor he's got going on on his arms!
trevor - i like the skeletal sinnewy-ness quality of the horse a lot... he's looking kinda evil heh :)
i added a back study to my WIP post. I think I'm going to start over again... but go traditional... we'll see how ambitious i get.

Ah thank you, I think I'll check out his writings. I don't think I ever have, btw.
Another good source of a nice rather Hollywood take on Jason and the Argonauts is the movie of the same name, featuring the great Ray Harryhausen's stop motion work.
Someone's gotta at least draw up some fighting skeletons! If I have the time....maybe I can add one or two...IF I had the time. Sigh.

I was planning on doing a lot more for this one. But as usual, other things came up, and I'm heading out of town tomorrow, so no time to do more. :( But, I did produce one clean sketch I really like of Ascalaphus, King of Orchomenos and Son of Ares.
The rules say "no sketches", but I'm assuming that refers to rough sketches and not to polished pencil pieces. Hopefully this is ok.

I'm heading out of town for a couple of days, I'm looking forward to getting back and seeing what everyone else produced. Good luck all! See you on the flip side. ;)

Very cool Chuck, i dig your stuff, and this one doesnt fail to impress.
Prophet - looks very good, i really like the different take on it, kinda starcraft-ish! but my untrained eye sees some of it as a little muddy...mostly around the bottom of the legs, unfortunately i cant suggest any solutions, not quite good enough yet, so take this crit with a case of salt.

Can't wait to see these all finished! Congrats Trevor for this topic!
Chuck - haha, I love him. He's a total badass.
Panagos - NICE. My only crit would be to maaayyybe add a bit more definition between the spear and your figure. I notice the drop shadow there but it just needs a bit more... then again that's just being picky.
Prophet - The water looks way way loose to me in comparison to the rendering you did for the armor - otherwise, looking good!!
Guastaferro- I like the change - so much energy in what you have so far. Can't wait to see it finished!
My 2 cents, hopefully I'll be back with an update later today if work doesn't kill me. (Has anyone worked at an art retailer during back to school before? Its HELL! I've never run into so many students who don't know what kneadable erasers or 2B pencils are... shameful hehe)

Jska - sound like a frickin zoo! Thanks for the comment - i prefer this direction also, the other had no life to it, no story to tell. As for yours, i think its looking good. I think that you need to reevaluate your colors tho, heres why: the majority of your composition is in blue, giving the impression that we are looking at a night scene, which i think works for the story your telling. the problem is with your male figure, who, if standing in that same scene would have a rather blueish color to him also, rather than the flesh tones you have. These two color compositions are colliding, i would pick one (the blue imo) and go with it. I think its coming along nicely tho!

Took me a while to remember how to post in Photobucket again. Well, here's my entry. Other than the fact that he's losing one right arm and sporting a thong, this Jason's pretty generic, if a little on the S&M side. That said, props to Prophet, Chuckmate and Mantroon for crossing zones. Its a challenge considering Jason (Hercules? my myths are all over) doesn't really have a loud visual trademark other than being a brute so that it diminishes his character more. If there is one, it escapes me at the moment.
Trevor and Guastaferro's looks promising, looking forward to the completed entry.
Panagos' detail is very nice. Looks like a lot of work went into it, and glad to see it all rendered in pencil. Face looks great. For crits, I'd say the shield is looking just a little flat, and the hair seems to be blown by the wind, but not the skirt. Just minor nitpicks. Cool horse motif on the armor.
Props to Jska for the narrative quality of the entry, and the research/knowledge on the topic. Hoping to see the finished version. Colors look great. For crit, I'd say the girl's hand seems unnaturally clamped on that dragon.
Hope no offense was taken with the crits. Its in the spirit of crit week (or is there one? I popped in for the first time in months and was welcomed by a gigantic banner saying crit damyoo!)
Anyhow, its been fun. Hope to do some more. Looking forward to seeing Bluefooted's entry. Latah! :sony:

Johann, you really need to go in illustration. Really, really, really. now, now, now. You need to live doing just that, art. Man, I'm so sad the world we live in is one big mess.
Your art is educational and deep and rich and personal. it breaks brains freeze , provokes imagination and invites to thinking and dreaming. Frees minds in my honest opinion. It can enrich person who looked at it, I really think so and I'm confident talking for myself. That kind of illustration we need in books and actually in any place we might meet art.
You know I don't like every little trick you use to make your viewer look, not everything I like what you like (for example pose is a bit too simple to interpret, he is a soldier first and the most, but his face makes me forget about not very thoroughly chosen body language, he doesn't take no for the answer, "The Ends justify the means" in his world, in my opinion, in my opinion only, which doesn't mean much), but the essence of your art, highly intelligent, without borders and serious, respectful to ability to think attitude to your viewer makes me agitated every time I encounter your art.
Update your book, please, you said you will.

JakkaS, hey, very beautiful concept, it's a pleasure to take time and look carefully for all details you poured into this image, so much love in them. And I like the face of the guy, he is very human, he is not that confident in himslef. He has weakness. Not so bright too, but might have some compassion which he needs like cow needs saddle. I love that you gave him soul with human flaws.

Changed mine again, like it tons better, but still have a long ways to go...
Lukavi - Thanks for the props ;) What nice colors! Really draws the eyes in. My only crit is the thighs, they look longer than the lower legs by comparison. It works for him though, he seems really beefy and stout - suits his power. And nice cod-piece too btw haha.
JakkaS - LOVE IT. The club detailing is perfect. The armor version is my fave, a bit more dramatic and angry - for some reason without his armor he looks kinda lonely and sad heh.

Chuck, mate: As always your values and color schemes are great. But something seems very odd about his stance and the way hes holding that gun. I think it has something to do with how large his hands are and the fact that the gun is so small in comparison. I mean really with man paws that big he could one hand that machine gun easily and itd be super difficult for him to fit both of them onto that little handle. Maybe give him two guns or something with a little more oomph like a stinger missle launcher.

Atlanta-
After being abandoned in the wilderness by her father, Atlanta was raised by the wild after being taken in by bears sent by Artemis. She was trained by hunters, and soon became famous for her amazing speed and strenght, said to be greater than that of any man. After being taken up again by her father, The announcement was made that any man who could beat her in a race could have her hand in marriage, but anyone who lost would be executed. Atlana excepted, expecting her suitors to give up, but they continued to try. Growing tired of this, Atlanta singed up to sail on the Argo in order to escape her suitors.

As Jason wore the sheep skin around hs neck the sun shone upon it; he noticed then the little gold specs that covered the fur, and realized the fleece was not made of gold was the legend described, but merely sprinkled with particles from the river. Positioned just a few steps from the cliff, sword and spear in hand, facing an entire army of warriors from Hades, he for a second thought himself lost, that his quest was in vain, a sailor's illusion.
But then he looked at the faces of the warriors, and even inside dead orbits where no eyes lived for centuries he coul see fear, and more, respect. They were afraid to advance. Suddenly, the memories of the last year in the sea flashed inside his mind, and he felt his heart at ease, even facing certain death. He finally learned the truth:
The quest itself, and not the fleece, had made him worthy of being king.

Atalanta
She was born on a distant planet. Gender equality had never been an issue so, being an only child, her father taught her everything, anything that he would have taught a son. He took the young Atalanta whenever he traveled; no matter if it was a distant planet or another continent. He was a hunter and was teaching his daughter all that his own father taught him. She became adept with any type of weaponry he handed to her and she became equally capable of flying just about any vehicle or ship.
As the years progressed, Atalanta's father's interest in interplanetary hunting expeditions waned and she soon found herself planet bound at an age where her sense of adventure was incredibly fierce.
An adventurer named Jason from a neighboring system was on the search for crew members for his space vessel, the Argo. He made a stop on Atalanta's planet and she, yearning for adventure, showed Jason she was more than capable to join his team. With her father's blessings, she joined the crew and soon they speeded off to the far reaches of the galaxy in search of a mythical "Golden Fleece".
