This is a character that I have been designing over the last couple of weeks - here are some quick, late-night sketches of the space suit that the character wears:

both masterpieces, i know
Anyways, here's what I've gotten done on the model so far:

I think it looks great so far! When I first looked at your sketch, I thought the foot was going to be his arm! LOL
Anyway, keep it up. These boards here are slow, so just be patient, people will respond when it's imperative too.
I really like the clean geometry you have of the head so far. But I don't know why it's all triangular polygons. Is there a reason for this? Games maybe?

thanks for the encouragement wc! LOL about the foot thing...I definitely ran out of room on that page but didn't want to go on to the next one...the model is triangulated for 3 reasons - one, I honestly like having that much control over my polys (i'm a tad OCD) - i know i can see the "lines" easier if i used quads, but i think paying attention to ALL the lines is harder but worth it. You can make sure that every face you make is just right (not saying MINE are ;) but it works in theory ;) ). Two, I'm modeling him in a modeling program that I wrote myself over the last month or so, and since i know dick-all about 3D programming (or at least did when I started the modeler) it does not yet support quads or n-gons. Third, the model is intended to be used in a game, so I figure it can't hurt for him to be triangulated anyways :)
And yeah, these boards ARE slow ;) but I figure they're slow for everybody, so it doesn't necessarily mean i've created a total abomination (although it doesn't rule that out either ;) ) Hopefully the finished product will elicit a few more responses (be they good or bad)! Thanks again!

thanks dna! i appreciate the encouragement - i also posted a new render of the head as i wasn't happy with the old one. The head is about 1000 triangles or so.

Hey man,
Is this done in Blaine?
Good progress! Is there still a beta available?
Although i really need my quads ;-p to work well...

erik - there is a beta of Blaine3D available now, just click here. (http://bombshelter.ghostopsmod.com/files/blaine/bzip.zip) Everybody wants quads, so they're on the list of features to add, but before I add them I need to add smoothing groups and visgroups and stuff like that, and also edge handling (so i can do some edge extrusion and possibly some beveling functions). So someday, quads and n-gons will be on there way, there's just a few critical things that have to be added first. Also, the render was done in Deep Exploration (Blaine definitely can't do that yet ;) ) thanks!

you are definately no fan of smoothinggroups eh? :D

LOL
no smoothing groups yet :) the program i'm modelling him in doesn't support them yet, so i'd have to remake the smoothing groups every time i exported him for renders, and i'm a BIT too lazy for that...the only reason the render is there is because it looks marginally better than the wireframes :) once the mesh is finished i'll pull it into maya, tweak it, tex it, all that good stuff. This is very much a WIP thread :D

Astronaut man here will be going on hiatus for the rest of the summer. He, along with my other cg projects, has begun to usurp the role that my ever-patient girlfriend deserves, and so he is being "removed from office" so to speak. This is for the healthiest, trust me :) thanks for the feedback so far guys! Hopefully I can finish him this fall and bring him back here.
