View Full Version : PLEASE USE THE ATTACHMENT MANAGER and NOT IMG tags.
Jason Manley

We need to have the images uploaded directly to the site. IMG tags end up as red x eventually which ruins the quality of the forums archives. Also, attachments get thumbnails.
Ca Now Hosts All User Images For Free
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the interest of preserving images in important threads and throughout the site, Conceptart.org now has an attachment manager set for all registered members. Rather than use your own host, uploading the images to ftp and using IMG tags etc...you may now upload images directly to conceptart.org through the ATTACHMENT MANAGER located below the text input window in the "new thread" or "reply" to thread areas of the site. Quick reply does not show the attachment manager. You must "go advanced" or use the reply or new thread buttons to access it.
Thanks to the workshop, we are able to afford goodies like this. I hope this makes things a little easier around here as well.
Cheers!

Okay, the thread thumbnails are really cool, but why the heck can't I attach full pictures inside my threads anymore? I see either links or little thumbs, which is stupid inside the thread as it makes the "don't link to your images" rule rather hypocritical.
I hope that's a temporary issue that will be resolved, because if not I'm going back to my own hosting. My internet access is slow so I just open up a thread, draw while it loads and then go and enjoy the arty goodness, that doesn't work when I have to click on every separate thing. I'd rather the viewers actually see the stuff without constant clicking.

No dudes, the thumbnail feature is for thumbnails of art work, not avatars (I just did that 'cos)
When you make a new post in your sketchbook, and attach your art, the first image you attach in that post will update the small thumbnail beside your thread title.
Then when you make a new post, and upload more images, again, the first imagie in that post will update the thumbnail next to your sketchbook title in the forum.
Got it?

hmmm...thanks for the input...we are still working this out....if it doesnt end up working out we will disable it...however the biggest problem is not whether you can type text next to your images it is the fact that older great threads are now missing images because people clear their ftp spaces and thus ruin the archives of this site.
we will see if we can find some solutions..thnx for the patience as we grow.

My biggest beef isn't the thumbnails, but the fact that the larger image opens up in a new window. It's a pain in the ass to click a thumbnail, close it down, click a thumbnail, close it down, blah.
On the whole, though, I do really appreciate the attachment manager as it keeps me from having to upload to my FTP everytime I want to post an image.

d I think a good idea would be to upload the tumbnail itself seperately, if there isnt a way to go around it easy otherways.
However, I already seen two sketchbooks who have used animated gif pictures as for their thumbs... and seriously if all 60 sb's that is on first page gonna start jump around and move, i prefer whatever other forum... please
dont make this happned...

It would show the first image of the last post to give a fast visual cue that something has changed.
Anyway I've just tried it and it doesn´t work anyway. What's more, the images that I've uploaded before using this attachment method don´t show as thumnails but hiperlinks. :(

Another way to do it that you can do in CP: Edit your signature to have your sketchbook url in it and then you can go to the last place you remember posting and click on your sketchbook link that will be at the bottom of your post. This is actually more work than the way Cartoon Fox says to do it, but if you've got Norton, it saves you from being hassled by a computer program about something getting added to your favorites when you added it on purpose. I hate that personally.

aww maaaan you mean I have to make them all attachments? I will second the comment about not being able to have written descriptions for each one. A lot of my earlier images are freakin huge, and that presents a problem when viwing with attachments.
I dunno but I keep a careful inventory of my art on my site, and I rarely move my stuff around. so If I link to an image off of my site, chances are, it wont move. but eh. i understand the need to archive, specially for the pro work around here. that way if someones site is down, their art wont be.. but if the actual forum is down, it wont matter.
SIGH.
for finding your sketchbook: do a search and type in the exact title. for me, i just type in 'kina's sketchbook' in search, and there it is! quick and easy. just.. dont forget what your post is called ;)

The attachments can show up in line, not boxed all together at the bottom, but there's an extra step. Afer they are attached, navigate to where you want the image to appear in the post, click on the paperclip icon, and then on the name of the attachment you want. It will show up normally, just as if you had used IMG tags.

Anyone find out a way to make the attached images show up as full-size, rather than thumbnails, mid-post? (Thumbnails seem appropriate in 'finally finished' section - however they do not seem appropriate in the 'sketchbook' section - mainly because sketchbook images, in my opinion, should be 'practice images' - and in my case that usually means assorted images on 1 page, making the thumbnails look sloppy and uninteresting). I'll have to leave them as [img] tags off-server until a way to display them full-size, in-line, in the post is created :\ (cause I hate how they display as thumbnails or at the end of the post)

Just weighin in, real quick like, I appreciate the desire to keep red x's outta here, but I dig the img tags and I'd like to think most people regularly updating their SB's aren't moving their stuff around too much. Shouldn't have too many x's from people who prefer tags. If there was an easy way to update the image beside your SB and also be able to use tags thad be great. Wow! Why are so many people making a big deal out of not being able to write comments above their drawings. The progress you make drawing is what's important not why drew you this or that. So, in updating my sketchbook, I used the attachment manager, and when I saved and looked at my thread, there was the text I wrote, but the attachments only showed up as brown thumnails, same color as the BG for CA.org. Then went I removed the attachment tags and put in img tags, both the img images and attachments showed up. so then i removed the attachements. I hope the whole thumbnailing instead of full size image bug gets worked out, cuz I really want to use attachments.

I love the attachment manager for the ease of uploading pics to your post, but why do some peoples attachemnts show full-sized, while mine are all tiny thumbs that open in a new window? September 20th, 2006, 12:26 AM
So, were the thumbnails intended to become the avatar of our sketchbook? Because that's what more and more of them are becoming. Not the worst idea, but not the most useful either. I think I'll just turn off thumbnails soon, especially since they don't exactly work as [IMG] tags.

The way I see it, the main purpose of this is to preserve good threads from dying. If you personally don't think you have a thread worthy of archiving, then I wouldn't worry about it. If you're pissy because now you have to go back and change all of your img tags into attachments, then you should contemplate whether all of your image posts are worth that.
However, if you think that you would like your images archived in the threads, but still want to post comments by them and have them appear full-size in your thread (like your sketchbook, for example), then here's a simple solution:
Use the image tag, AND attach the file as well.
The little thumbnails at the bottom of the post shouldn't clutter it up too much, and, for the sake of archiving, everything will be copacetic.
anticonnor
September 25th, 2006, 01:22 PM
I'm not sure why everyone thinks that they can't post comments with their images with the attachment manager...
Just use the AM/paperclip icon to upload you pics
Put your cursor where you want your first pic to be
Click the AM icon and select the attachment you want
Write your comment after the attachment
Click the AM icon and select the next attachment, etc...
I'm just waiting for them to fix the thumbnails situation. I hate having all of my uploaded attachments automatically turned into thumbs.

This is the solution! Just attach a small image in the first post without using the paperclip (this image appears as a thumbnail before the thread in the sketchbook list) and then start posting using the attachment manager and the paperclip function to get rid of the image border and positioning problems beginning with the second post... it works fine and images are shown in correct size. Welcome welcome.
We just found the cause to a bug so i recommend you make your first post with an introduction maybe and attaching your threads thumbnail, then create a second post with your art in it.
To attach images, click Go Advanced down the bottom, then either click the little paperclick icon or go to the Manage Attachments button below.
A window will pop up and there you can upload your images, by default the images will appear at the end of your post, after uploading them, if you wish to accompany them by text just click the paperclip icon and you can place the images.
Now word of warning, the bug we found causes all your images placed with the paperclip to show as thumbnails, however if your first post in the thread has none the rest of the thread will work perfectly, so that's why i recommend you put your art into a second post and a none-inline thumbnail and intro as your first.
Hope that helps. :)

Actually, I figured it out a few weeks ago. The thread is given a thumbnail based on the attachment to the FIRST message of the thread. So even if you add a new image to the thread in a later post, you must go to the 1st post in the thread and replace the attachment there with the thumbnail of your new work that you want to appear as the thread thumbnail.
It's confusing as hell, but I assume it's a limitation of this forum that it can't figure out your last post to a message thread and use the attachment from that.

To make your pictures show up (or at least, this is how I've been doing it), attach them like normal. Then, go upto the paper-clip symbol where the other options for your past are, and click on the drop down menu. Click insert all.
If those directions were unclear, there's a picture-guide in the intro thread in the lounge. I don't know why the "normal" way isn't working, but there you go.

I really think the forum should make one Standard mode on how things get attached, that way there would be no options and no misunderstandings.
But I guess thats hard now... then It has to be all from scratch sort of thing, like a new forum altogether.
anyhow, just thinking out loud...

hello! sorry, I have a little problem uploading images at the moment. if I click on the "post reply" button in my sketchbook thread, the next page appears, where I can describe my sketches and pictures in the text box. so far so good, my problem now is, that the button "manage attachments" doesn't appear! so I can't use the attachment manager to upload images directly from my computer. my question: did I do something wrong??? oh, and I only can use the text box! no smilies, no text options...nothing! so, what's wrong? I'm a little perplexed... thanks for your help! ^_^° InFlame

I have just started my sketchbook thread. Everything is working as it should but I am unhappy with how my thumbnale looks. I want to change it to something more eyecatching. Is there any way to edit it?
dusty imp
July 6th, 2008, 04:34 PM
it seems the only way to do it is make a thumbnail you want, go to edit your first post, and delete any attachments you have in it. then upload your thumbnail, but don't put it into the post itself. it will show up as thread thumbnail. than you can add all the images back into the post.

Attachment manager?? you mean the one in the Additional options section?
krisCrash
November 22nd, 2008, 05:06 PM
We need to have the images uploaded directly to the site. IMG tags end up as red x eventually which ruins the quality of the forums archives. Also, attachments get thumbnails.
Ca Now Hosts All User Images For Free
Maybe people are being confused about this because the FAQ says we need to find our own image host;
http://conceptart.org/forums/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item2#faq_new_faq_item1
I didn't see anyone else in this thread suggesting to rewrite that, sorry if it is inappropriate.

I'd like to second KrisCrash about the FAQ. My first posts have been IMG tags thinking that was the rule. Today I made myself a sketchbook and noticed the title of this thread... I had to fix my sketchbook, which wasn't a problem (though it took me several edits to get it right), but it would be nice to update the FAQ as soon as changes are made :)
And I too thought it weird to have to fill out all the options before being able to upload an image. :S

November 25th, 2008, 04:15 AM
Yes, it's kinda annoying to have to fill out everything every time o_o If at least the name could be put somewhere in the profile settings so you don't have to type it every time? And how exactly do the changes affect the image? Or is it more of a registration mechanism? Like those proposed in the Orphan Works Bill, but for free, that would actually be pretty clever.

Use the little paper clip icon you see at the top of your thumbnail when you click "Post reply". It opens a popup and there you manage your attachements. The things to fill are boring but it's a way to identify pictures, because of the Orphan Bill right? If it can help artists to have less of their works used without permission ... do it! :)

Anyone else experiencing "Invalid File" after filling out the Copyright info, category, etc... while trying to upload a .JPEG file (9:44 PM Alaska Time 04 December 2008 in case there is server issue right now or some such event) after uploading?
Baltar
December 6th, 2008, 05:30 PM
@Sudsy: I'm not getting that issue, but all of my images (luckily only a couple) that I uploaded before the fields were all required to be filled won't load because they are pending approval.
I'm wondering if people are going to have to go back and re - upload everything or if it's just a temporary issue that's going to be fixed.

i wish copyrighting was optional, becasue alot of what I post to my SB I really don't care if any one steals it.
i wish one could multi post ca attachments
for instance how do I manage the image at the top of the EOW thread... If I can't image attach it I have to change the tittle and reload it every time, and that seems like an extravagant use of space, to reattach the same image over 100 times

tested a theory on getting the thumbnail to update, didn't work.
Idea was if the first post i did in a new thread contained only one image, then the next post a single image as well, no change, thumb is still the same in the main forum gallery.
FreeLiner
January 29th, 2009, 12:31 AM
Success!
Okay if you want the thumbnail to update on your thread heres the way to play it, not sure if it's the right way, but it works:
-First post, post only one image in the new thread (image A).
-Next time you post, post the new image (image B), then edit the first post you made in that thread, go advanced, and remove the original image (image A).
Then, you upload a smaller size of (image B) then upload (image A) after it (upload both images in the same post, don't upload the original image A in a new post).
You want to upload only one image in the first post, so then you only have to delete one image.
The reason you upload a smaller version of you image B is so it doesn't take lots of space next to image A
Sorry if it's confusing, i'm not the best at explaining. i figured it out because i saw peoples threads having small thumbnails of the latest work on the first post.
It's jsut a matter of doing the first post with only one image to make it a faster process, because the image that will show in the thumbnail must be the first image in the thread.
hope this helps

i still don't get his. my post looks cluttered and ugly using the attachment manager. I found myself simply getting frustrated and can't really see myself even bothering to update anything if that's the way it "must" be done when using img tags and photobucket is a million lightyears more simple

You can insert attachments into the body of your post the same way you would if using IMG tags. After the images are uploaded, click the paperclip icon at the top of the posting window and you'll see a list of all the files attached to that post. Just click on one to insert it.

What about studies? Technically they're copies from existing books so would you hold the copyright to your studies?
I don't think anyone would get ticked if someone copied his/her studies seeing as they're second generation copies...

Yeah, or paintovers in the critique section. If they are completely different images, who owns it? I have just been giving the OP the copyright, because I don't care, but it doesn't seem correct. They probably don't even know about it.

thanks for the free space, CA staff!
my suggestions (might have been said before):
- there should be an option to save copyright, date, and all optional info so it could be applied to a batch of images or
- multiple file uploading should be allowed. Selecting just one at a time is very time-consuming, and even more if you decide to add a category or a date... which I want to do
;)
edit: I just found out I cannot NOT choose a category, subcategory and all that! woah it takes a while to upload a single pic! :( not very stimulating IMHO

OH NOES!!! my pictures :( they be gone and stuff, I am upset but its not anyone's fault so I cant really be angry, oh I hope their not gone. I like this place so much better than every where else and I use it as my portfolio since I don't have a website of my own. I would hate to have to send people to my DA page to review my work. CA is just so much more respectable in a professional setting, this is really upsetting and I feel awful for bitching about it but I wish the best of luck to whoever has to deal with this.

Hi, I just read this whole thread, and am a bit confused. I have 2 questions:
1) Is it recommended that we use the attachment manager instead of external image hosting for all our sketchbook images? Or is this more about just the first thumbnail one? I have seen sketchbooks that use both approaches.
2) If we are doing a sketch as practice from/of something that is copyrighted, such as a video game character, a copyrighted photo, or a book about drawing with illustrations, as reference, as many sketchbooks here do, should we fill out the copyright section with something like: Copyright: drawing by me, photo ref by x. Or is there another recommended approach? I certainly do not incorporate copyrighted materials into any of my finished works, but practicing/learning to sketch is another matter. I'm just new here and starting my sketchbook so I wanted to get an answer at the beginning.
Thanks!

I actually went ahead and started a sketchbook using copy/paste images from my website. I havent had problems with it yet but realise I should be using the attachment thingy so oops! to the moderators. If it's a big problem, I'll reload them correctly.
I only figured out the attachment thingy by accident trying to upload a thumbnail image, haha, idiot that I am. If it's what people are talking about, it's the paper clip in the options across the top of the advanced posting box. Been using that for all my latest uploads so maybe thats an answer to your question, Aaron.

Would it be frowned upon to start a sketchbook topic by posting pretty much everything that shows what you've been up to lately? So something like, 10, 20 wholly different sketches?
Cheers!

Hm... I don't exacly know where to ask this, so I'll post it here.
1) How long does it usually takes to get your own sketchbook thread posted or rather approved? Tried to make a new thread yesterday.. but still nothing ^^
2) I'm hosting my own website and in the past 6 years it was down for about 5 days... which I consider good enough to prevent the red X affair *g
And it is also easier for me because I dont have to upload the images twice, or to every website I want to post them again and again.. but I will bow to this rule if it is a necessity ;)

People would do this if it didn't take forever to choose categories for every little sketch you put in your sketchbook.
I'd rather use img tags.

Why not make those fields for defining category and such optional?

I'm having the same problem(s). It takes FOREVER to choose (mandatory) the categories and sub-categories for the images. On top of that, for me anyway, multiple times I attempted to upload images, and while everything seem to go fine procedurally, in the end the images weren't uploaded. Something is wrong.

I'm having the same problem as dad_mad. How long does it take to get a sketchbook approved? I did use attachments. Don't mean to sound annoying, I'm just really new here and other art forums I've been on didn't have this approval system, so I don't know how it works.

I'm fairly new here too, so the attachment thing is a bit different. However, it won't ever seem to allow me to use the attachment to add my sketches in my sketchbook. It says something about security token...? What is that?

I totally agree with ConnyNordlund, it takes like forever to upload with the "manage attachments".

Is there a way to multiple files at once as opposed to one at a time?

the attachment manager is annoying as fudge and takes forever. I'm still gonna use it but you guys should work on that.

I am unsure if I can come here with my question, seeing as I don't see any other subforums where I can go to with technical problems. Could be me however, I just joined yesterday!
Anyway, I don't seem to be able to view pictures anymore in topics, or attachments if you will. I encountered this in the sketchbook forum, and I tried what I could, but I still can't see anything. So I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing or are all attachment images really down?
Edit: last night everything worked fine.

Hi guys, the new forum looks awesome. But unfortunatally I can't see the attachments in my sketchbook thread anymore. Do I have to reupload them again? Thanks for answering. =)
Edit: I'm again. I saw a minute ago, that the new forum is still under construction. So ignore this post pls^^

Is it possible to create thumbnails for uploaded images or make the forum automatically resize images so that they won't exceed forum width? If yes, how?
I was about to open a sketchbook but manually reducing the width (and height) of all my sketches would be a major annoyance.
It appears that images get uploaded and attached to posts as-they-are.
It would be nice to make smaller previews of them, like with external image hosters.

If I understand this right, then the information for new members in the FAQ (How do I post images?) isn't correct anymore?
You'll need to get an external host that allows you to show images on different servers (generally referred to as "hot-linking"). You cannot post images directly from your hard drive, or attach them to our forum.
I read that before I posted my sketchbook and added my images as hotlinks, but according to this thread I now think I shouldn't have done that... or maybe I just don't quite understand it?

Yes, the FAQ is outdated (the reference to Geocities should have been a tipoff).

Well just because one site mentioned doesn't exist anymore doesn't mean the more important parts of the information also are outdated... this should really be updated, as the FAQ was the first place I went to after registering, trying to get everything right... well I suppose that didn't work out, lol.

how do you delete attachments from the image manager? I don't see any option in the window. It seems to have changed from the last time I used this forum.

I'm really sorry for asking (what I guess is a really really dumb question) but I wanted to open a sketchbook thread. Reading this beforehand I wanted to use the attachment manager. There it says my jpg may not be biger than 537 kb. So I have a pic of a sketch and when I saved it in photoshop and changed the scale (wheter it's a small or big file) and put it against null it was still too big (570 kb). Can anyone help me please?

Change your image size to around 800-900 pixels (long dimension) and use the Save For Web function in Photoshop to save as a jpeg at medium or high quality..
