View Full Version : CHOW#32 - VOTING - Visarra - Orc Female Beauty
Oblio
July 3rd, 2006, 10:19 AM
Only few know the true fate of the orcs. They were the most beautiful creatures on earth, so beautiful they would put anyone to shame. But soon they started to think they are worthy of more... and demanded to be worshiped and acted as they were Gods. But Gods those days were not so forgiving... and turned the race into what we all can see today. Then... one day... an orc girl was born.. so pure... she went beyond the gods vengeance...
or so the orcs are saying...
Her name was Visarra - The Beautiful Orc Lady

i have to quote cognition.sb "This is how CHOW is meant to be"
A great round, with new people joining, lots of old friends, and tons of effort.
I tried to take all to the poll - just to celebrate.
Exceptions - the WIPS & one portrait (Avatar, buddy - sorry - full character is required)
blinky - your entry was considred a wip - you had a nice start and went for a difficult pose and lots of character and so on. if time will allow me for a crit round - you'll be the first.
Now... i also think it's really difficult to choose.
I am having a hard time and if i have to give a price.. i will not be able to decide in one day. I don;t have the time and you dont have the time to think so much.
So.. we will try to have multiple voting this time to see how it goes.
I will ask of you to restrict your votes as much as possible.
I mean... i love all entries - but i will try to limit my votes to about 3.
Think of it like this - choose one you love - and vote only the ones that could take that entry out.
I also thought about keeping your own posts into the voting thread - this way we will not loose the vibe from the creation week and you will be your own designers of your final post - description included. I hope you like it - if not.. let me know.
so

Visarra Gunka: wife to the dwarf governor Osik Gunka, exiled daughter of the orc King Bassak Albrog, entrpeneur, fashion designer, international beauty and style guru. Visarra's natural beauty became apparent in early childhood and as the daughter of King Albrog she was in a perfect position to be groomed for an appropriate arranged marriage. When she defied her father's will and married her true love, Osik Gunka, both were forever banished from Albrog's kingdom, never to return. Following their secret marriage, Visarra and Osik took up residence in the dwarf territory of Bormak, where Osik holds the governorship. Being a governor's wife in exile from her own people has become a privledged but somewhat dull life for Visarra over the years. She busies herself with managing and caring for her beauty. She's found within herself a strong creative impulse she channels into clothing design and formulating skin care products from exotic natural ingredients. Dwarf women in particular, she believes, need all the help she can give them. One of her more noted fashion innovations are the shoes she's pictured wearing. She designed them specifically with the dwarf woman in mind. The fad never really caught on, sadly. Like many an extraordinary outcast, Visarra Gunka was ahead of her time.

Visarra daughter of Varkaak and Brakka, her human looks much prized among orcs was legend. The female Orcs of her tribe jealous of her looks spread a vicious rumour that her father was a human and she and her mother where outcast. Interesting note around the time she was born the humans and orcs where on friendlier terms and use to trade which other. A certain human use to deliver milk to there tribe but it can not be proven if he did have relations with there mother. Visarra fell in love with a dwarf and married. As she use to say its not the size of the man but the size of his axe that counts.

description.
Visarra was a dutiful and loving wife to Gurg, the fearsome leader of the Orc race. Gunk the cunning dwarf wished revenge on the Orcs for the massacre of his family and friends. Late one night he stole in to the Orc city with a fine leg of pigflesh (Orcs just love pigflesh) and wooed the defenceless Visarra away with his fine lure. To this day no one knows what became of the loveliest Orc that ever lived...

great entries - this one will be fun.
i'll be on the road the next days so there is no more time for me to work on this :(
No ref. Tried to go after the african anatomy - since for me it has that wild beauty.
I also tried not to make her look like a "masked/maked-up human" a la Star Trek & Co. I'm not too happy with the concept. In fact i was just fooling around looking for shapes and lines of the face and after one B&W version of the portrait i kept on going since i love doing the breasts too and so on.. i sort of got carried away until the colors and all.
So.. pff.. here it is.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d105/afantana/Oblio_visarra_001.jpg
She was so ugly when she was little... who would have thought she will develop like this? All her childhood she was ridiculed by the orc kids and all only to be venerated for her beauty as she got a close to her 20s. She hated them for that.
Gunka was a very special dwarf too. Very shy, he had no beard, he was skinny and with short hair... and as an artist he met her spending all his money for a contract - she had to pose for him. He was looking to paint "freaky" stuff... and had no idea he will fall in love. Nobody expected this.. not even themselves. They left knowing that they will be banished. They were declared banished after their departure, nobody knows where they are.
A Gunka original... costs fortunes these days and the paintings keep coming.
This one... cost me 800 cows. (fozzy.. you have a long time to reach that many ;) )

Visarra had never asked to beautiful. A Helen of Troy amidst the snow and feral wilderness, her beauty was her curse. Scrutinized since birth by the warlords of every clan in hopes she would wed into their own line, she watched as armies of orcs slaughtered each other in her name.
Maybe that's why she did it. She didn't love the dwarf. She was destned never to know real love. But somehow, she had to make it end. She had to escape from the eyes of those around her, and so she contrived her own banishment by sleeping with the grotesque little thing. Shortly after the elders' reluctant judgement of banishment, she left her dwarven 'lover' so that she might roam alone in the desolate north. They say she wanders there still, the most beatiful orc - Visarra and her tragic beauty.

Visarra, daughter of Supreme Orc General Tarkkus, was the most admired, and feared, warrior in the land. She embodied the ultimate qualities of a warrior Orc and was seen as the epitome of her race. Her ruthlessness in battle knew no equal and even her fellow warriors found themselves shaken when witnessing her brutality in combat. General Tarkkus was also shaken - by Visarra’s unlimited ambition. Though she was his own daughter, He knew it was only a matter of time until Visarra eliminated him in her quest for total domination. He exiled her with a fabricated charge of an affair with a dwarf, knowing the population would shun her and offer her no aid. But he knows, deep down, it’s only a matter of time until she returns, and if the rumors are true, it will be while leading an army of dwarves she has enslaved to her service and trained in the dark art of war.

Ostracized by her own people, but revered by all other races who laid eyes on her, Visarra was a product of the battle of the Osiris, where the orc kingdom was overthrown by the Doppleganger armies. For a period of 12 weeks, the Dopplegangers reigned over the kingdom, burning, destroying and plundering. The men were slaughtered, the women were raped and captured. In the future, all of the offspring of the raped orc women were taken to slave camps where they served out their sentence and were murdered shortly after. All of them .... except "her".
He was Gunka. The most prized of the doppleganger's slaves. He was massive in strength, his arms thick as three trunks, his hair long, woolen, and sheened like the night. He was enslaved for 13 long years before he made his escape. But he couldnt escape without her. She was like nothing he had ever seen. carrying the strong body of her orc herritage; lips that were full and tender, eyes piercing and wild...but like the dopplegangers, skin that was smooth, pale, and emotionless, hair as long and as silky as down feathers. For an orc, she was Beautiful . Years after he brought her back to her village, he visited night after night in secrecy via the dwarfish built tunnels that ran beneath the orc city. Until she bore his child. She was marked for death, to be hanged in front of the entire civilization as an abomination.
Now once again, with her male savior, she flees a scornful existance from a city full of hate.

Taken from the Chronicles of Gor’Nok Stone-Fist. In his own words:
“....She Is a terrible beauty that Visarra. Queen of the Blood-Claw Clan. The last clan still holding out against the onslaught of my hoard. Standing heads above most warriors , her neck is that of an ox and her arms stronger than a bear. She is built steady as the Fortress Red-Rock that she holds. Coming from finest stock our offspring would be a magnificent sight to see. Why she chooses a stubby little dwarf as her mate instead of The mighty Gor’Nok is lost to even me....”

From the Journal of Hop Wheatly, Barkeep - At first I made my way over there to throw them out. I run a clean place. No Orcs. Then, I shut up. She was beautiful. I jammered a bit, but my jaw was loose and I stopped trying. She could stay, anytime. It was that poor excuse for a dwarf that I wanted to toss. I didn't of course, because then she'd leave too. I couldn't risk that.

I think its safe to say that my vote goes to Jakkas, due to the fact that it freakin gives me CHILLS to look at that chick. BUT, you forgot your description jak!!
and ive seen oblio not admit pieces that were kickass for the simple fact that they have no description. So..(and please dont kick my ass for this)..im going to have to say that my vote goes to Blaise(and it was a TOUGH decision between him and a few more.) she's one ugly mo-fo, but i can see how she emits a sort of Brutish beauty. Id let her kick my ass, not that id have a choice i bet.

Then Artifex: Just a beautiful and funny idea: (well, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder ;) )

Everybody: Thanks for any votes of yours that I've gotten, and amazing job, all! I originally set this concept out to get a laugh out of my wife, and succeeded! The best vote of all, yes? :)

Whew. Everyone did great. Lots of different takes. I decided to vote for three of the more feminine looking designs. When I first read the brief, I really took it to mean the kind of beauty most anyone could see, not just other orcs. Visarra's described as being way beyond the typical "orc beauty" and the fact her mate is a dwarf suggests she has a universal kind of appeal. I liked the description Oblio wrote with the poll too. It sort of echoes Sauruman's explanation of orcs in LOTR, that they were once elves, now corrupted by dakrness and shadow. It stands to reason that once in a while that recessive elf gene pops up and another Visarra is born. We'll anyway, that's what I read in the topic, that's how I developed my own concept (with a dash of humor of course) and that's how I voted. But everyone really gave the topic 110% effort, regardless of their own interpretation, and that's always inspiring to see. I wish I could vote for everyone.

Lots of good entries here. But for my money, Wafflehouse really hit on the personality of the character. Not only does she fit all the requirements, being both Orc and Beauty, but she's also got elements in her design that outright read as 'feisty'. Marco's in a close second, for my money, as he's got a fantastic atmosphere and ferocity in this one. And while I really enjoy Artifex's (it's bloody hilarious,) I do wish the design had more personality, as it doesn't seem to stick out much beyond the momentary bit of humor.

There's a lot of good illustrations in this thread. There's just one problem...
The name of the site is not Illustration.Org, it's ConceptArt.org. I'm an 3D animation student and if you handed me some of these pieces and told me to create a 3D model from it, I'd punch you in the balls (since I'd be sitting down) and tell you to go fuck yourself. I'm not in anyway insulting the artwork (since my own drawing skills are weak), just its functionality to a modeler.
Pieces that I really liked and work well for me are Cakeypigdog's, Wafflehouseninja's (I liked the added expressions--helps when getting around to rigging the face--and the armor piece inspires me), Migsta's (good amount of detail to work with), and Artifex 33's (great piece). There are some really technically excellent but visually uninteresting pieces (you need to make me want to model it) in there (JakkaS' piece suffers from that--it's gorgeous but doesn't keep my interest for more than a second).
Like I said, I'm looking at this from a more practical point of view, that of the person who has to turn a concept into something tangible. Always remember that some poor bastard that has to work from your piece. :)
My 2 cents.

im really glad you made that point.. Its not somethign i really think about but you're absolutely right, however, since these arent ever going to be modelled, most people wont go through the necessary steps to make it interesting.. You gave me somethign great to think about - How will this character look as a 3d model? - that i think i will begin to use when im doing these weekly activities... The only thing is, people vote on whichever one looks the best, or most creative, not necessarily the most functional, and unless its made into a requirement, you'll never see the end of these "chiaroscuro" character concepts..

July 11th, 2006, 08:41 AM
pfff....somethin wrong with chiaroscuro?
gentlemen, i think we are forgetting the idea of what a baseline concept is....
this isnt for rigging purposes, its to get the concept across. and from my experience, the first few concepts (characters interacting with an environment) are made to covey a mood, and narrate a character to give it life. Look at beginning environment sketches. one of the first things they teach you is to take artistic liscense through use of imaginary colors to make the mood and setting. Concepting for a 3d guy is great, but....its also boring. if it were in the innstructions to make an orthograph, and a stale-ly colored drawing so the 3d guys can see it, we'd do that. but its not. Look at creature of the week. the biggest, baddest, most interesting one wins.....not the one thats a plain line drawing so to capture the 3d guy's eyes.
love u guys.
just my two cents

Nor is it ConceptArtFor3DModelers.org.
Perhaps (being that you are still a student) you haven't gotten to the class where they teach you that there are many mediums for which concept artists are required to create and shocking as it may seem they don't all involve computers.

The name of the site is not Illustration.Org, it's ConceptArt.org
if u think that this site is ALL about concept..yer mistaken. Dan milligan doesnt do storyboarding here? Dobsky(spelling) doesnt do life painting here? Coro doesnt use gauche?

pick up one of those "The art of Star wars books." illustration and concept are tied hand in hand. without one there is no other.

Blaise, your entry is rich in darkosity, and has earned my vote. My 80s heavy metal band will be contacting you shortly to design the cover of thier next album.

ok, people seem to not know this.
You can Multi Vote, up to three times here.

Not all concept art is for games, and not all concept art is to work from. There's a lot of concept work that's used to communicate character and feeling, for writers and storyboarders to work from, which can be just important as all the design details.
Anyway.

"rich in darkosity" :D I like that! Thanks Lork Dubu. I agree it's got a 80's metal vibe to it. Is Molly Hatchet still around?
By the way, for those who may be interested, I posted a step by step of this piece in my sketchbook here - http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=931353#post931353

intersting debate here, i for one think that it is a problem with these competitions is that voting comes down more to 'nicely rendered image'
than it does to actual concept. lots of entries (not just in this round, but commonly) oftain contain very little design and then lots of noodly rendering.
indeed i myslef have ended up spending far more time 'finishing' a concept to a certain standard for these activities than in designing interesting concepts.
i cant see a clear solution to the problem but i for one would prefer it if the judging came down more to intersing ideas/ conceptual process than to
'nicely rendered image'. just my 2 cents... i will continue to participate from time time regardless though: its all good clean fun!
maybe we could try and do a COW/CHOW where part of the breif is taht yo show your process of design. the skillul huntsman book by design studio press is a greeat example of this: the initail stages of design being far more interesting than the final images...

My main vote goes to Wafflehouseninja. Great concept and presentation. I think this one just hits the nail on the head.
And to add fuel to the debate above, I'll reveal that I also cast votes for cakeypigdog, Oddo, and Main Loop mainly because I like them as illustrations (although I like cakeypigdog's concept as well). Of course this was only possible because we're allowed multiple votes this round.
I'm not sure how long wyrdlyng has been lurking around this board since that was his first post, but this site is clearly about more than character models for 3d animators. There's ton's of straight up illustration here. That being said, this particular activity is to create a character concept, not necessarily a great illustration, so he has a point, but as Marco and others have said, the two go hand in hand.

alright. heres my take on it. and forgive me if imposting too much, but im at work, and websense blocks every other webpage cept concept art, lol. anyway.
a reason a couple of the "good" works didnt get my vote, is because in the initial assignment description, it described her male companion, gunka, just as much as it described her. and while the focus should be on her most likely, he still has to be there. i LOVE wafflehouse's pic...but..wheres gunka? same for jakkas. i see these pieces to only be halfway done. if a description calls for two, it might help to put the other one in there, even if just a shadow. otherwise, it wouldnt have mentioned him.
again, just my 2 cents...(which i guess makes 4)

I disagree, Marco. The topic, after all, is "Visarra - Orc Female Beauty" not "Visarra - Orc Female Beauty and her lover". The description of Gunka may be provided merely to give a deeper insight into Visarra's character.

how about a new rule? the WINNER image will get a full ortho drawing from the looser (in case of more loosers (liek - more with 0 votes or the like) they all work on it...)
you don't make the orthe - you'll be denied to the next CHOWS.
neah.. just kidding :p

Beautiful to Orc's and Dwarves. Eye of the beholder and all that.

Beauty is also relative. The most beautiful orc of it's race may still be absolutely atrocious.

had to go with blaise on this one, it was a tough choice but i had to put myself in the position of an orc to consider "beauty" and a woman who can fight, look pissed, and fight, is probably the hottest thing an orc can fathom. I also kinda disregarded the entries with human like faces because while that may be beautiful, it's not orc.
gj to all the great entries!

Went for wafflehouseninja on this. I would love to see this character in animation/comic book/ game setting.
Runners-up: Blaise, that was one bad-ass painting, but nothing about the character really screams "female", let alone "beauty". Marco had a great composition too, but besides the horns in the silhouette I couldn't find anything to distinguish her as an Orc.
Great round!

@Oblio - no worries man, it was just a pleasure to get into the CHOW, great ideea!
As for my votes, I gave them to Blaise because I liked the strenght emanating from its pose and brush strokes. I also voted for Wafflehouseninja because he got a good mixture of cute and badass. And I want to mention Alterego for the cuteness of his orc girl. Great work all of you guys!
