The Samurai Spirit

I worked on this in my spare time so I'm really not sure how long it took. This idea came to me just scribbling on a blank page in PS. I got the details from the Samurai Armor from a lot of different photos on the net. The writing on the flag is supposed to mean "Dragon", I did a search on Samurai flags and found it so I'm hoping it's correct. Thanks for looking.

The only thing that I would do in this illustration was to exaggerate a little in the light orange coming behind the Samurais, but it is only an opinion.

There is so much about this that is exciting, but the white flag is dominating the image and it really shouldn't. The sword point and so many of the little spines touching and almost touching the edge of the canvas are also rather unfortunate.

So, so sweet, though.

I really like this. Very nice use of colors.

I only have three crits:

It looks (and I'm pretty sure you did) like you just used a slightly transparent white block for the flag, and while the ripples in it are shaded, the image behind it really isn't going to show through perfectly. The flag will disperse most of the light on contact, and you'll be left with a silhouette of the image behind it, at the angle the light is coming from.

My second crit is that the tail as it goes to the (viewer's) right seems to get a bit confusing, because it's hard to tell that the body twists at an earlier point. But that may just be me.

I also agree with what dogfood said about the spines and swords, especially the swords. They make a nice bright trail for the viewer's eyes right through, but also right off the page.

These are really just minor comments. I really do like the piece.

The character on the flag is a bit... unbelievable. It looks more Korean in fact so does the dragon with it's 4 fingers. I'm also missing the dragons left arm/hand. There are some really cool scale/armor plates going on in the upper part of the dragon and the detail is great... but it makes a quick transition in the first curve to less detailed rendering. I understand you want less detail the further away from the viewer you get, but it seems really too abrupt, flatttens him out, and makes the curve unbelievable.

The samurai are great. The position of the swords could be better though. Having them in-line really draws the eye, but has the effect of blending them together. It would really set them apart and make it more apparent that they are fighting each other if the samurai in the back was holding his sword at an intersecting angle. Just some things to think about for the next painting.
