This is an interesting idea for a thread. Hopefully some familiar names who aren't known for their "abstract" work will post. Whether the material derives from an attempt to create abstract art proper or just from warmup/calisthenic activity, it would be really fascinating to see a full spectrum of approaches represented here.

Its not so much a "secret" but, non-respresentational work is all about the formal stuff. They're like paintings "about" composition and color theory. It is the interactions of the shapes and colors that are telling the story, not what the painting is supposed to be a picture of. In that way an abstract painting is attempting to be an original experience, where as any representational art is always going to be atleast second hand experience, ie...a reference to something else. Also some people believe that abstract art better represents spirituality.

Yeah...Non-Representational is probably a better word then abstract, since as you said it implies abstraction from something. Abstract as a noun sort means something different as a verb. Technically any kind of stylization is a form of abstraction, but when people talk about an abstract painting, it seems to usually be non-representational. I looked up abstract on Dictionary.com just to see what the actual deinfinition is and out of the 6, this is probably the most appropriate.

Abstracts for me are a great way to learn through instinct.
It's difficult for a lot of people to trust their instincts when painting something representational, so cutting lose all of those ideas and trusting your gut on color, composition, and form really helps you learn things that can be applied in less experimental paintings.

your post is insulting, uneducated, and most unexcusably, without even spending the time to really understand what some of us are trying to do here.
abstract art is a way to explore the basics of art and design, and also a way to allow the subconcious to play a part in the creation process.

This is more like
" ugh.. I just got done with a 12 hour shift at work and my arm is tired as hell, my brain is overheating and I have no motivation to create something with form, anatomy or design.."
I'm not saying the thread isn't a good idea but it's more like just a place to kind of vent/relax, play around with color, play with brushes, textures.. I don't see this kind of stuff as being totally difficult in any respect and there's pretty much nothing to crit when something is abstract because it can be interpreted a thousand ways. Yea, it takes a little skill to work out composition, and an interesting color scheme but you don't need to be a brain surgeon, I'm sure most of these are being pumped out in a matter of minutes ;)
I'm not quite sure it should be in the Finally Finished section, for that reason.. since these are almost less work than a speed paint. Don't be surprised if it gets moved to the Sketches and WIP section. We'll see how things go, quality and how popular the thread becomes.
I agree and disagree there Mike...You're right in that it probably doesn't really belong in the finally finished section, more because of the nature of this site than anything intrinsic about abstract work...and yeah some do look like they were thrown together in 5 minutes. The time spent on the ones I posted was closer to a speed paint, so yeah...they could probably go in the study/exploration section. However to say there is nothing to crit...I think abstract work is almost easier to crit since its purely formal. Although often abstract painters are the first to pull the "you don't understand my art" card...which is unfortunate for them, and anyone else trying to express something outside the linguistic realm.

and i cant help but be reminded why i no longer post on this forum regularly.
Haha... well thats exactly the reason why I visit this forum on a regular basis.
I like this place because not everyone here thinks the same.
But anyway I totally disagree with mike corriero.
First of: this doesn't belong to "sketches & wip".
Just have a look at scott robertson or ashley wood.
Scott robertson has abstract work in his portfolio.
http://www.drawthrough.com/images_gallery/sr_personal_6_624_t2.jpg
As far as I know, scott robertson is a professional and a portfolio consists of finished work.
And what would happen if ashley wood would post here? would you then move all of his work to the sketches area?
Now I'm not comparing any of the work in this thread with theirs. All I'm saying is that a piece can be finally finished even if its not a full rendered illustration.
If this thread gets moved then at least move it to the FINE ARTS, STUDIES, & DISCOVERY section.
" ugh.. I just got done with a 12 hour shift at work and my arm is tired as hell, my brain is overheating and I have no motivation to create something with form, anatomy or design.."
If you are really serious with this (i don't think so) then have a closer look at androids portfolio. form, anatomy and design. And yet I would call it abstract work (at least some of it). Of course it is better than most of the art in this thread. But I didn't know of the rule that only professionals may post in the finally finished section.
I don't want this thread to be another discussion thread yet so here is another series from me (I was sure I posted this here before but I can't find it anymore)

I know what you mean. But we are artists. I don't care what the result looks like as long as I can learn from it or have learnt from it while painting it.
And I don't understand what the effort has to do with the finished painting. As long as it's enjoyable or interesting to look at, I don't care if it took someone 50 hours or 50 minutes.
Anyway... Another semi abstract work:
http://www.destrucreative.com/zaknafain/folio/3473_001.jpg
It isn't that good but still better than posting without art.
This piece took me 50 mins and I learned a lot while painting it.
I learned about the use of black and how impasto texture can kill any feeling of depth. I discovered a new colorsceme and I have now a better feeling how to handle cyan.
just so that you know I don't do these for fun or because I want to test fancy brushes.

One can noodle on a generic Frazetta clone for a year, make sure everything in it is perfect, yet it won't be as interesting artistically as something Picasso did in five minutes... with his left hand.. while drunk.
Or some such... However, abstract is a *tough* area to do something really original these days, something that'll stand out and be remembered. I wouldn't say everything has already been done, but it can often seem to be the case.

Those are some very nice pieces, Nethus.
Also really diggin' the heavy texture on the one you posted, e338.
Unfortunately some of these are reading a lot like "PS/Painter brush tests", but quite a lot of them (including the original ones that started off the thread) are nice to look at.
Personally, I don't ever really look for meaning in abstract paintings such as these, just the quality of the lines, colours, texture and overall composition.
Unfortunately there are a few in here which look like people just scribbled around for 2 minutes on different layers and then flicked through the layer blending mode list until something looked half decent. Whether that was intentional or not...

Dile: Neither of these are painted so to speak. The first one is a collage of a very simple abstract render put together in photoshop where all the colours and textures come about. The second one is all done in photoshop using selections to add and cut out the circles, and the main form was simply made with the pen tool. I don't use premade brushes as I think this defies the point.

The recent posts are getting pretty intresting. I like yours Mike! I barely see any custom brushes on there wich is good!
Cool shit Nethis, I can see some thought went into those, I dig em!
Tried my wack at some abstract. Just used the standard circle brush in PS to create this shape. Shakey hands! A lil more cleanup and I might have a custom brush on my hands.
LETS SEE SOME MORE FREE HAND SHIT!

Sjoerd: Those are very nice...reminds me of cave painting for some reason.
Kresh: I really like the contrast of shapes there...the combination of fractured, mechanical and splattery organic shapes makes for a very interesting final result...It would look nice mirrored (in a number of different directions) with some assymettry then hand painted in...jus' my thoughs :)
Heres my contribution for the day :bashful:

Lots of interesting stuff here.
You know DS, I think that painting was on my Trapper Keeper back in the fourth grade! :P You're a braver man than I am though; I'm too much of a control freak to go abstract.
TyranX, I wallpapered yours.

i decided to give it a whirl.
its pretty tacky, but still fun to do. ;)
:) The yellow, purple, and grey combo is totally 80s there DS. Its funny how just a simple color combination can evoke an entire decade like that....and its not tacky...it's "stylish" ;)
@Dutton: Its not a trapper keeper cover till theres some raytraced spheres, cones and cylinders near a checkerboard plane with a mandelbrot fractal in the background! Everyone knows the future will be filled with chrome spheres!

Hey this thread is great!!! Heres is my modest contribution. Had some time after work so i was playing in photoshop with different brushes and put this skull image i drew behind it and it seemed to work, had a lot of fun doing it anyway. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I love this thread guys! As for all those people dissing abstract art in some way, all I can say is this: it doesn't matter what it is, if there are things that make it good,(mood, color, compression, composition, etc) than its art in my eyes, wheather it is illustration, painting, installation, whatever. Have an open mind and you will be a better artist.
Everybody knows representational and abstract artists are always at war, lets show those fools that it is a ridiculus thing to argue about.
(I know it is hard sometimes for people to appriciate abstract art because they are used to being pleased instatntly, and don't want to think, but part of being a good artist is seperating yourself from people like that,(your parents or relatives who don't understand)
here's some work(hope it shows up!)

Great combination of sculpture and painting! I like the face one more than the brush one. the later reminds me too much of a art supplies catalogue.

Thanks. The face one has proven kind of popular in certain sectors of the gallery crowd. I call it Bad Hair Day, and it's a little bit like my version of a Jawlensky face.
I figured out that while boards and panels might be a little heavier than canvas, they allow you to bolt or glue found objects on there and thus stretch the defined boundaries of "painting."
Here we go:
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/arttorney/abstracts005.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/arttorney/abstracts006.jpg
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m214/arttorney/abstracts007.jpg
The one with the bottle caps was my first in this found object style and the first painting I got into a juried show. I look at the objects and decide what painting can be made around them.
The last one is an oil tryptich of a prickly pear cactus made on found object wood and canvas and then bolted (technically wood screws) onto a tempera monochromatic thing of a scorpion. It is rigged for wall hanging but it weighs 7 lbs. There is an upper limit to this sort of thing. You don't want to push a gallery director too far about what you claim can be hung on a wall safely.

Horsebum. I'd like to see you shade one side of the black stuff in this as though it's three dimensional. Think about whether a piece in there casts a shadow over another piece. I think it will mess with people's heads. http://www.artconspiracy.com/files/2144119494/1_2144119494_225651_719.jpg
