adjusting dark photos

Well I'm trying to adjust a dark video, so that I can see it on my computer. But it's too dark. I'm not sure what adjustments to make to get the people's faces visible. Usually I just turn up the brightness and contrast on a picturem, but it doens't work that well. Also I try putting more saturation.

or maybe I should try adjusting levels, but I don't know what they do. Theres input and output levels and a black and white arrows.

are you adjusting an image or video? If your in PS open levels, there should be a gray arrow in the middle, between the two move it to the right. If its video im sure final cut has some option...
