Hi ConceptArt!

The latest addition to the gallery, ‘The Last Green Tree’, has been posted. Commissioned by Tor Books to illustrate the forth coming novel by the same name from author Jim Grimsley. The image, at its surface, depicts the conflict between organic and man-made technologies, yet the novel offers a much more complex investigation and blurs the line between these two cliched areas. Once again it was a pleasure to research the tree and play with the abstract shapes created from its twisting truck contrasting that of the parallel verticals of the building. My assistant Kristina makes a guest appearance as the model for the figure.

On other news, I will once again be hosting an Open Studio this weekend, June 3-4, 1-6pm each day, at my studio/home here in Brooklyn. Sorry for the quick/short notice. This event is open to the public and numerous current and past projects(included the image below) will be on display in the studio as well as the large scale ‘Battle of Agincourt’ still under production and recent exhibited at the Society of Illustrators.

I'll also have two of the three panels I am creating for the United Nations Stamps due out next year.
Take this rare chance to browse through my collection of paintings and preliminary drawings as well as corner me with any questions you may have. Directions to the studio can be found online:

Inspiring as usual Donato. Man I wish I could be there for your open studio sessions. Sucks being so far away from the action.

This is fantastic Donato.. I going to def. try to stop by your house again this year.. I do live in BK after all... This particular painting is a bit different from what Ive seen you do in the past... Not really used to seeing you do "organic" objects in your paintings and I must say that you did a fantastic job.. Excellent.. One thing I must say though (Im saying this with the highest reguard to you and your work being that your a modern day sci-fi master and all) I would have loved to see maybe just a sky on the right side of the painting instead of those buildings. I am saying this without knowing anything about the book and what the specific job pertained but, I just feel as if it were more simplified there the rest of the image could be appreciated that much more.. Anyways, just my 2 cents from a HUGE fan. Hope to see you over the weekend!

Absolutely beautiful, this definitely looks like one of your best pictures so far. I'd love to climb around on that tree.

I only wish on your website I could see a bigger and more pictures of your studio. :)

That is a magnificent tree, I love the warmness of it compared to the coolness of the rest of the image, I'm sure that was intended :)

I disagree with the fellow fan up above, I really like the buildings in the background and I think it adds to the juxtaposition of the tree versus technology... but that's just me as I am sure it amounts to a taste thing.

Congratulations on the book cover :) Well done!

Damn Donato... looking at your work makes me feel like a kid. Jaw droppingly good. I also saw some other pieces recently in Borders and it's amazing how solid each piece is. Alot of love goes into these and it shows.
THanks for sharing,
-Jason

This is the finest painting that I have seen at this place so far… It’s not best painting you have done (of course this is my opinion, so…), but still it’s better…

I’m sorry that I can’t visit your studio (only ocean apart..). Is there would be any chance to see high-res versions of you paintings at your site?
Or some “Art of Donato Giancola”?

Cheers, Aleksandar

By the way, where are five stars?

Two reasons I want to live in New York:

Great goth clubs and Donato's open studio events. :)

Such inspiring work man. Like Bouguereau or Gerome level.
