"It's an aesthetic reminiscent of artists such as Rodin and Boccioni. But with a contemporary twist: Their caricaturish portrayals owe as much to comic book legends such as Robert Crumb and those naughty 70s Penthouse cartoons."

NO.

I think the fact that it looks like it can fall apart at any minute is its major strong point.

While i dont particularly like her stuff, i think a lot of people on CA could afford a more open minded approach to art.
There is a lot more to art than just craft.

I suppose. It only makes sense to be open to different forms/styles of art. But I think it's also important for people to be honest in their reaction to it. It's also frustrating to see someone praised for something when others, who do more work and have more skill, are under appreciated. But associating this (in anyway other than "sculpture") with Rodin? I find that insulting.

Anyways, I just thought she wasn't done here.

People like her, are ass lickers who will do anything to exhibit their crappy stuff.
A lot of members here are amazing and how many of them are famous?
Some of them do sculptures for fun and are way better than her

So if it looks good, It's craft ( and not art )
And if it looks horrible, it's art!

I saw a big mass of ugly unaesthetic bronzes at the Kansas City art museum, with all sorts of pompous titles. They looked nothing like the human forms that supposedly inspired them. And yet these were 'art'. Even the most unskilled charlatan could have made these. There was no sense of line, or form. It wasn't even good abstract art. Yet he was a artist, turning out ugly bronzes.

Yet someone who can draw, and do representational painting, well he's a craftsman if all he does is portraiture, and makes a living from it.

Most of the abstract artists I do respect, learned how to draw first. They can see what is important and what isn't to the work. They can boil down something to its essentials.

"A Artist doesn't sell out"

Why shouldn't they? How are they different than anyone else who has to 'sell out' by working every day. If they have to paint portraits during the day to keep food on the table, it's called a job. I program during the day, and I don't get to work on everything I want to, but because I do, I can go home, and do I want in the evenings.

This isn't art, this is artschool mental ************, and I saw all sorts of these 'concept' works by undergrads who wanted to be 'out there' because figurative drawing and sculpture was too hard.

It does look pretty bad, but if you observe it, it looks as if its life-size, and notice the base-board its on has wheels. But, as said above, it does look like elephant crap.

Don't be to quick to judge! She did it, that's the important part; and she's getting recognition for it! If you have something you want to do go out and do it! Don't be afraid of what others may think or say of it, then maybe one day you will create something that others will spend time thinking and talking about.

It doesn't have to be technicially flawless to be 'good', but posting this in a "concept art"-forum is only begging to bring forth the narrowminded zealots (Aren't we all?). One way or another, art is ment to evoke emotions.. You're watching a sculpture that, placed in the right environment, would possibly achieve just that. In the mean time, posting sarcastic comments bashing down on a fellow artist's work.. makes you look like... well... idiots.

Another way of being an idiot is to write english like a four year old, excuse my poor vocabulary, grammar, syntax etc.

This won? I dread to think what the losers look like!
I know we should accept all forms of art, but Its not as if this person has trained long and hard to reach where they are now. I could probably conjure up something like this just by kicking a clay bag over.
I think the main thing I find annoying is that this has been spammed, The person didnt even have the curtessy to even explane what it is. instead its just been slammed in our faces saying "look at my work because Ive won a prize in primary school."

Id love to see the look on Smellybugs face when he sees this.

Mr Man: I don't understand why you and others here feel so threatened by this woman’s sculpture? How do you know how much formal or other training she has? She could possess flawless technical skills, and she may have chosen not to use them. As to your comment about the spam, she may have made this post...but it looks to me as though it was made by the online gallery representing her The Saatchi Gallery so maybe you should start directing your harsh criticism toward them. As to your comment
I could probably conjure up something like this just by kicking a clay bag over. People say this kind of thing about art all the time...it's a weak criticism the fact is maybe you could have...but you didn't create it and she did! Rebecca Warren created several peaces and has a big show! So maybe you guys should lay off and go make some art...unless you’re practicing to be horribly bad art critics; in which case keep up the good work.

Mr Man

I know its a harsh critique and I didnt mean to stur things up, I just thought I should contibute my own personal feelings. She may indeed be an excellent sculpter that choosed to produce works with feeling so i take back some harshness. I have confronted this type of art before and I do have certain respects though I think the reason im so negative about it is basically because im fed up with this form of art.

Mr Man: I don't understand why you and others here feel so threatened by this woman’s sculpture?
There is a world of difference between threatened & just thinking something is bad. I honestly don't think anyone here feels threatened by her work. Not in the slightest. Personnaly It acctually makes me feel quite good about my work. Now SmellyBug? I honestly feel threatened by his work because his skill blows me away in every way. :dead: But I still love his stuff, and it motivates me to do better. <3

I guess I'm just not a big proponent of only reacting positively to art work. I think art can be bad since I think art can be good. :^^:

I know that I'm stupid because I can´t understand this piece of Art, and don´t feel anything, good or bad, when I see it. Fortunately there are a lot of people (Art critics, Gallerist, Art collectors) that can show to people like me what is the Real Art and make a living in the process. God bless them.

Well...lot's of mixed feelings here. I think that these artists can, do, and should be open-minded to many types of art.

But if you think it looks like crap, I'm glad this board allows you to say so. I too think it's not a very good piece, and I don't care for the others in her gallery.

The general sentiment, however expressed, seems to be that her work lacks a sense of time and effort. They look slapped together and tossed into a gallery. People will buy anything and art truly is in the eye of the beholder, then.

I think that the folks here are offended by what appears to be a lack of skill, since they spend a lot of time honing their skills. If Ms. Warren CAN create something with high levels of craft, but chooses not to, that's one thing.

The point is, even abstract art ought to show a greater sense of polish, line and form than theses pieces do.

(PS: I do graphic design for a living and many of my clients don't know Microsoft desktop publishing from good layout and design. Same story.)

As most peeps in her know or dont know in the art world it's is sad to say but it is not always what you know but who you know. She prehaps took a few college courses and got to know a few art gallery owners who decided to show her work and boom she was "in". I didn't care much for this piece myself concidering the vast amounts of talent in here. But I give credit to this artist for probably being able to do what she loves to do and making a living at it,somehow. Take Alexander Calder for example, the guy made giant mobles for goodness sakes and then was asked by Braniff airlines at the time to paint these jets. They looked silly. But damn if he didn't get a ton of recognition from it. He achieved his goal in becoming a recognized artist. Piccaso? If he had posted his work in these forums he would have been bashed as well. Like it or not odd art sells people. You may not go spend your hard earned dollar on this but there are tons of people that do everyday. I thank the stars above that we live in a country where we are allowed to exspress our own mind and the freedom to create what we want to call art.

Dunno about the sculpture itself since I haven't seen it, but I think that photo is terrible :) Some of the other pictures on the Saatchi site look actually pretty interesting, although it's my opinion that the rough "finish" detracts from the cartoony shape of the sculptures; it just makes them look busy and hard to read which I hope is not the intention. It could be better in person or "3D" in general... Something like a rotating animation would be nice when displaying sculpture on the web.

Stop defending it - its bad. Even though it's bad art I guess it still qualifies as art. I just think it's really silly to defend it. Nothing is learned or gained from looking at this work, other than you can stink and get an art show. So I guess there is hope for us all.
