concept: totodon
The totodon are a bizarre race of giant docile creature. They have limited intelligence and a high endurance for bleak conditions and environments. Their natural walking motion is fluid and smooth, creating a demand for the creatures as moving vessels across rough terrain. The are mainly bred in captivity, being trained from birth to carry heavy loads and swift stable movements. Commonly used for public transportation across deserts, the totodon are now becoming the royalties favorite cruising travel. Private ownership has risen, turning these creatures into premiere vacationing travel through desert and marshy terrain, with all the accomadations of home inside these giant travel structures.

It lugs stones around and puts 'em on piles. Then it lugs some more stones around and puts them on another pile. All very mysterious and uninspired. But what the hey.
Due to the harsh conditions on the surfaces of Rigel Alpha-XV-111684, very little research is possible on these fascinating creatures. The strangest phenomenon that typifies them is the stone moving, from which they derive their name. They'll carry heavy chunks of rock around for thousands of miles in order to place them on a pile of other stones, for hitherto unknown reasons. At first these piles have been thought to be remnants of a lost civilisation, but apparently they're all the work of dumb beasts. There are however voices being raised to send expeditions out to determine wether or not the Movers may be in fact an intelligent race.

concept: Sertratus Giganticus
On the fringes of the Klatoo system lies the barren planet of Carst. Out of all the known worlds in the galaxy, Carst has the largest number of large land animals to date, and it is home to the second largest ever discovered; the Sertratus Giganticus, the first one being the Terra Carnificus of Bremor V.
Although the locals had used these huge beasts for millenia, the Federation was slow to realize how useful these creatures actually were. It was not until their trucks started breaking down from the unrelenting sandstorms that they realized that they needed an alternative means of transportation. They found it in the
Giganticus.
The Giganticus weighs in at a hefty 150 tons, and can carry an equally astounding load of nearly 100 tons. it is perfectly at home in the desert, and though slow they are immune to the larger desert predators due to their sheer size.

The Aardusdei, or Earth-gods, are massive anteater like creatures that survive by using incredible brute strength and battering ram tactics to tear apart insect mounds in their native deserts. Major characteristics of the species are an unusually powerful shoulder and leg musculature that allows a top ground speed of 30 mph and immense pushing power. Armored plates along the shoulders, neck and head indicate that ramming, especially with the two flanged plates on the forelegs, is the primary means of defense against predators. The first xenobiologists to do any major study found that the aardus are docile except during mating season, although they can be infuriatingly stubborn and single minded at times. for example, When two bulls get into a mating challenge, it is a head to head pushing competition much like a sumo match, and can last as long as five days before one or the other relents. Theories that they could be domesticated have proven mostly correct, and now the aardus are used as work and pack animals in several colonies, their ability to push or tow huge amounts of weight and burrow through hard materials making them perfect alternatives to bulldozers.

The Grand Doctus is a reptile of sorts that burrows under the ground much like the Earth's mole. It relishes in the moist soil while poking its "tree-like" whisker above the surface. It lies in wait for birds or other creatures to nest in its whisker and then blasts out of the ground swatting and grabbing all the snacks it can reach before the creatures scurry off. This grand beast was nicknamed "The Mover" because of the large mountains of rock and grass that it folds up with each lunging attack.

concept:
Crunkawoomps are large, clumsy and considered to be not particularly intelligent. Though they can digest almost anything, their favorite food is fresh wood. This is unfortunate since they live only in the most barren mountain regions. Therefore they make do by eating the villagers' houses.
Their large claws are designed for pulverizing and scooping rocks (their main source of nutrition in the mountains) and are not well suited for picking up fragile wooden homes. More often than not, they end up dropping or crushing the homes and just making a general mess of things. The villagers are often irritated to find themselves displaced after being carried miles away from their village and subsequently dropped.
Crunkawoomps would be considered to be one of nature's jokes, not unlike the duck-billed platypus, if it weren't for the fact that they're so damn destructive.
Oh, and they're usually cranky because when they sit down rocks get stuck in their soft dangly bits.

concept:
The Anatassi are a migratory species indigenous to the planet Vlanout in the Uumpere Galaxy. These lumbering giants are the planet's largest species. Similar in behavior to the whale species found on a planet called Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy. However, extreme caution should be exercised when approaching a migrating Anatassi in flight. Because they use Vlanout's dense atmosphere to "climb" the sky in order to migrate, and due to their shear mass, they are unable to stop or change direction in a sufficient amount of time to avoid collisions. Thrill seekers should also be well advised not to attempt to "hike" an Anatassi. While not visible to the naked eye, the Green Orbs on either side of the giant's mid-section are bacterium producing light sources. The lights act as a warning to approaching entities to steer clear. But what is not seen is the bacteria that produces the light. If the bacteria comes into contact with any form of organic matter, it is quickly dissolved and dispensed as nutrition to the Anatassi. This unique digestive system is very efficient when an Anatassi is settled into a crater. Organic material in the immediate vicinity is utilized, and anything underground that unknowingly approaches becomes unwitting nutrition.

concept: The Red Tip Toom
The RTT's are a solitary species. Nomadic and powerful. They are quite successful in many environments, due to their power and intuitive battle sense. The RTT's only drawback is how solitary they really are. So, when it comes to finding a mate, the males will try as hard as possible to put on an impressive display. He does this by levelling all and everything around him. Moving Earth any way he can. The supreme bone plate of his head is incredibly strong and bright. He will smash his head into rock surfaces, and like a plow, channel out high levels of earth. The more he moves, the more likley the female will be attracted.

concept: Tower Knots
These small docile creatures appear to most as small clumps of dirt and grass. Each of these creatures have a distinct body shape and eye and nasal cavities that appear as large holes, no two look alike but they all have a general anatomy structure consisting of 2 front legs and 4 in the back. These creatures have superior camouflage even down to their moss-like tongues and green blood as well as colossal strength and speed. Though the Tower Knots are rarely seen alone, they will occasionally separate from their tower to go in search of food or serve as a scout.
They work in clans because the Tower Knots are by nature colony workers, each assigned a distinct task by the emperor knot. They build towers out of mud and twigs and grass and move these towers day in and day out all throughout the seasons migrating on a constant basis toward the sun. These creatures can't survive cold weather, they need the sun and the food that it provides to stay alive. Most of the time their on the move, various groups of workers will position themselves at the base as others serve as watchers and directors. Scientist are still not sure how they navigate, it's believed though that they can detect heat on extreme high levels and continue to move toward the warmest locations miles and miles away. Base workers take turns in rotation allowing each to gain enough rest in between each move. The tower rarely sits in one location much longer than a few days. The Tower Knots are more well known by the Towers they move than the creatures themselves.

A tectonus doesn't actually move much -- just a few inches every year -- but this is enough to reshape the world. They're extremely long-lived, and their slow movement is responsible for continental drift over many eons. A more noticeable side-effect of their movement is earthquakes, which are more frequent where one tectonus collides with another.

concept: Dawn Strider
The Dawn Strider of Jeelosh393 is the largest organism inhabiting the Jeelosh planetoid cluster. Despite it's apparently perfect adaptation to the ecology of the cluster's largest planetoid, the Strider has recently been shown to be an invasive species, though Jeelosh393 is currently also the creature's only known habitat.
The Dawn Strider is unusual in that it must keep in constant motion to survive -- it feeds exclusively on the spores produced by the tundra-like bacterial colonies that completely cover Jeelosh393. These spores are released only under very specific conditions tied to the planetoid's diurnal cycle, a narrow range of temperature and ambient light conditions found at the trailing edge of the planetoid's terminator (i.e., at local dawn). Therefore the Strider continuously seeks out regions of spore release by "running away from the day." This behavior gave rise to the creature's popular name, the Dawn Strider.
The sacs attached to the Strider's principal anterior spine act as both temperature and light sensors, the pressure in the sacs changing with even slight variations in either factor. It gathers drifting spores using its slightly bioluminescent "cape," much as terrestrial whales once used baleen to strain plankton from the ocean; the cape is also part of the Strider's digestive system.
Though it has a very efficient metabolism and extremely lightweight exoskeleton, the limited volume of spores released at any one time means that it must continuously "graze" in order to survive. Extremely territorial, one Strider will immediately attack another if its presence is perceived; rivals attempt to damage each other's sensor sacs by using their spines as offensive weapons. A Strider whose sacs are damaged usually dies within a few local days.
Interestingly, the local bacteria have adapted to the Strider's invasion so completely that the relationshiop is nearly symbiotic -- removal of the Striders would effectively threaten the existence of the planetoid's entire biosphere.

concept:
Similar to many species of shark that must swim constantly or suffocate, the Yawn-maw Breezerider possesses a respiratory system that requires active movement in order to function properly. As a result of this, the breezerider spends its entire lifespan in flight. The breezerider does not sleep, though it does rest at times by setting itself into a spiralling descent pattern and gliding for several minutes.
The breezerider feeds mostly on insects, birds, bats, and other airborn creatures that it scoops out of the air in its gaping maw. It has no natural predators, and is not hunted by man both because of the relative lack of edible meat, and because they are often viewed as good luck. Since the breezerider avoids dangerous winds or rain, spotting one often indicates a day of pleasant weather. Sailors in particular consider them a good omen, as the amount of wind the breezerider prefers is also ideal for sailing ships.

so here we have the mover. this is a gigantic creature indiginous to the planet beavercunt7, which existed 5500 years ago wayyy farrr away from here. the best thing about this planet is that the gravity is slightly less, enabling gigantic creatures to wander about with little pointy feet which worked out well for my stylistic sensibilities. so, anyway, the, aw hell lets call them "people" use these movers to "move "things. they are basically giant travelling land ships. structures are built atop its back, with a main building on the center of the back, and a point tower based right behind its neck. so what these "people" have done is rig up this elaborate system of high tensile cables that run basically from the from of this things head through the point tower, which contains a two way locking system and a steering set up, then through the main structure which runs the cables out its sides at six points along its body. these cables are run down and extend off of the shell if they are unlocked and the head is in the upright position. once the storage containers(fig.c) have been "threaded" and capped off, the head constrain it released. when this fuckers head comes down to drink or eat, it pulls all the cables and in turn, pulls all the storage containers onto its back. (fig. a.)
upon dropping shit off, the slack on the cables is released while the creature is in the belly down position while the head is upright, and, lets call them "elephants" are used to pull the shit off its back by attaching cables to the endcaps, and using gravity and the slope of the mover's shell to help them unload it. As the sea ice formed into a continent in its own right and the fierce winds ceaselessy blasted the icy wastes, creatures who could withstand the cold were forced to evolve to meet the demands of their chosen habitat. Once these creatures had forsaken legs for flippers for swimming, now that speed must be translated away from liquid water. A sail and a rudder to harness the mighty wind. Nails hardened and enlarged to form a skate to slide at great speed before the furious gales. Enlarged canine teeth to hapoon the hapless prey without even slowing down.

The Kaibutsu Ichuu Umi anchors itself to coral reefs looking like a small rock island. Swimmers, who can't resist the seemingly carefree fun, tend to fall for the trap. This Kaibutsu patiently waits for the swimmers to climb onto it's head and begin jumping into the water. Once the swimmers have started having their fun the Kaibutsu Umi uses it's tentacles to push the unsuspecting snack into it's large beak like mouth. The other swimmers will go in after their friends to try and find them only to suffer the same fate. The rock then disappears back into the water and moves to another location. Places that the monster has been rumored to be responsible for disappearing swimmers are all in the Pacific Rim.

A creature originally from the mountanous areas of the Eastern Region, the "mover" as it is affectionately called by local tribes, feeds mainly on aquatic weeds that grow abundantly in the mineral-rich springs and streams throughout the Central Basin. Because the nostrils are located on the top of the skull, the mover can feed with most of its face submerged, facilitating underwater foraging. Large, wide, sturdy legs provide stable footing in soft mud and sand, evenly distributing the creatures great bulk. Although the mover is a slow peaceful creature, it is prone to fits of aggressive behavior during the breeding season. Equipped with a thick crest, males and females are quite capable of inflicting serious injury if provoked.

When first encountered, it was believed that FERBLOOZLES were the first telekentic beings discovered. Further study has revealed that they are actually capable of warping the fabric of space in their immediate vicinity. This ability is their primary means of locomotion. The purpose of this is unknown, but they appear to be quite compulsive in their need to create tableaus from bone, shells, stones and other detritus.

concept:
The Mover (Pseudabor migramovator =~ pseudotree that induces to move), also known as the Mover Tree, lives on warm planetes of Stedtfeld Systems. The females live their whole life under the earth, where they feed on roots as well as other smaller animals living underground and a lot of microorganisms from the soil. Every ten to twelve years it's rutting season; the females come nearer to the ground, then pick their apparatus through the surface and unfold it to some nearly tree high flower like thing (that's where the "Mover Tree" name origins, although it is actually some sort of animal). The male (males live overground as harmless herbivores) jumps onto it to consummate the act. While digging into higher areas often buildings or walls are lifted and normally collaps. Not rarely it happens that a whole village has to move away, because it's terminated through the amorous play of the Mover. The population can hardly be decimated, because first it's almost impossible to detect the female that can live for years with a minimal amount of O2 deep underground (it also likes to rest in deep caves for weeks) and second a killed Mover spreads such a keen reek that Movers from miles away are clucked - what would just increase the destruction. The size of the full-grown males is nearly the size of a wild boar, while the females' size depends on the age and on the number of pregnancies they already had. The largest living Mover ever found had a weight of about 60 tons (relation: a sperm whale is ca. 50 tons.)

I voted tyranx, Because I really loved the concept of animal being that big~awsome. Go tyranx! : ) I also really enjoyed the rendering, nice organic qualities. : D I almost went with the antassi or tower knots though, all very beautiful concepts and Idea's!

I voted for Mike C mostly because my wife thinks his entry is cute;) There were an awful lot of moving cities in this one and after watching "Howl's Moving Castle" recently that was the first thing I tried to avoid in my design. I did dig Babylon and Bruce's pieces both for their draftsmanship and the original take on the concepts, if I were to revote I would've voted for Bruce because his telekinetic idea is a great take on the subject and is the most original/non-literal take on the subject this round. Great job to all!

My vote is for MIKECORRIERO, it was a close one but his concept was the best in my opinion. i like how clever it is. the colour is good and the drawing is good the only thing is it is kind of flat.

runner up is Undertow nice graphic look very simply in its shape design but has depth to the forms.

Mike - thanks, he eats those big tree like things in the background, I should of said something in the description about that. I think you may be right with the horns, now that I look at it I would of gotten rid of the frontmost horn. As for the reins I was thinking if it was connected to a sensitive enough spot, it could still work, but then again at first glance it doesn't look feasible. Once again I need to put more thought into my creatures. :er:

I am voting for Mike C. because those creatures are just too cool! I can't say I'm a fan of your white backgrounds for everything, BUUUT that's your style and the piece is excellent. Great idea, I could see this in a Miyazaki film. Undertow I really liked your piece but it didn't feel like it fit the theme. Tyranx yours was superb as always.

Mike-Thanks for taking the time to critique everyone, its always appreciated. You definitely busted me.. I'm totally guilty of rushing into things without a pure concept in mind. I basically made up the story after designing the creature, which came from a little sketch I did after reading the topic. It had been awhile since I entered one of these and was obviously too eager to jump right in.

Big lesson for me this week is concept before all else (form, color, etc.) I'm going to write that on the end of a mallet and pound it into my head for a few hours tonight I think.

You got my vote btw. I'm looking forward to seeing where your work goes once you start pushing those values. The designs are great and I think they would be amazing with more thought put into rendering form before applying all the textures.:D

A evocative concept, and the white background doesn't bug me a bit. we'e suposed to be looking at creatures here. andyou can see them perfectly. There's something about them which reminds me od a book I read once. They weren't in it or anything they just would have fit nicely into that particular imaginary world. the book was "The Infinity Concerto" by Greg Bear.
and the image made me laugh without being vulgar in any way... hard to do. and I appreciate it

hwango@- Like mask nice idea about constant movement to survive, I like the general ideas behind this and the story. nice work

Thanks for the mention! I really liked yours this week (I was your second vote), particularly because of the nifty tree tower. Of all of the "carries something" concepts this week, I felt yours integrated the best with the object that it carries. The critters poking their heads out of the holes in the tower are a nice touch (and very cute).

BabylonCargoCult - I wanted to mention that I really liked the extra thought you put into the way your design interacts with the world. The discs placed into the creature's nostrils to prevent it from diving while in service are a clever and realistic real-world touch.

The relation to the topic is really strange, not sure why it has to be near a tree to reveal its reproductive organ. Without the act of moving a tree it wouldn't relate to the topic at all. I also see a great lack of knowledge of anatomy or design in the creatures. There isn't a huge difference between one creature that spends its time underground and the other above ground? That's almost impossible since by nature the underground female wouldn't need certain anatomy whereas it would other anatomy in comparison to the male. You should research things such as mammals that move or live under the soil before designing the anatomy.

Thanks for pointing out, that my text apparently has understanding lacks (possibly cause of my bad English). Of course the tree is on the image as a locum for the houses I mentioned in the text. When my Mover comes near the earth surface, it moves houses and walls (and trees and so on...) and thus it moves the people to move to another location.

I'm totally aware of the anatomy of my creature. At least it is blind and has claws to move forward underground. And the females apparatus isn't that largely swollen out of pairing season. And the clutch is laid near the surface and when it comes to slipping the little males break the surface to live overground, while the female fawns stay subsurface (in the beginning in the tunnels of their mother, later they dig themselves).
But I didn't find that so important to mention it in the blurb.

Voted Azathoth. I'm just a sucker for that ole' Chtultchu mythos. Though i guess you could have varied the poses more.

Mike@ Ah, but i wanted to retain the mystery! But since you're asking, my idea was that they used the rockpiling as some kind of communication, with the underlying thought of this creature being an intelligent lifeform beyond what humans understand it to be. Very esoteric and vague and all, i know. Could have brainstormed more on it i guess. As far as rendering concerns, i tend to freeze up when it comes to that, afraid i'll screw up big time. But i promise to work on that in the future, scout's honour! If you have any handy tips ready ...

Very very interesting entries! But for me it was a split between Mike C and Stephen R. In the end, I had to go with Tower Knots. Great concept and execution. Well done!

thank you mike for the crit. it was all very true, and i need to think through my designs much more. so thanks for the eye opener, now its on me what to do with it.

voted mike c.
lots of great work, and tyranx's was amazingly painted. just beautiful. but mikes unique idea and thought process did it for me. the details and style execution really was great.

Thanks for that crit Mike :) Very good points. Hes not actually fourlegged. He's got two arms and two legs. I watched kingkong the other day and wanted to capture the nomadic powerful feel of kong, which is why i went for that pose.
But i agree, hes way too human looking.

Thanks to mike for taking the time to critique every one you did .That helps us wanabees (me) a lot . I am amazed I got A vote But I do welcome it with open arms , that encourages me to strive beyond where I am at , and drives me to do better next time . My vote went to Tyranx because it reminds me of StarWars concepts , I
know that sounds lame but it is true . I love the whole giant transport aspect.
As for the crit Mike gave me , thank you I Know the copy paste was lame
but I did not have much time this week and I was getting discouraged against the pros. This really helps me and makes me strive to do much better .Thank you . THIS THREAD ROCKS JABBAS ASS! We all Know the Huts don't move much , But COW makes him do the worm . I know he has told me so.:donk:

Thanks for the votes. I was surprised, and happy to see I got a few there.

I won't even try to be as complete as Mike at the C&C but here's my 2 cents as I scan the voting thread:

misledtomisery- While the anatomy/design doesn't look like a huge towering creature, you could have 'sold' it better with a much lower pov, and a lot of atmospheric perspective. (don't use such dark tones in the creature- it will look bigger, and farther away.)

walnut- I get the compulsive rearrangement motive. It's very close to where I was starting out my submission too.

Tyranx- Nice painting. You've a good handle on that speedy looking, concept art style that I've come to associate with digital film design. Your tip on photoshop brushes a couple COW's back was news to me, and quite useful.

kian3001- Get the textures on your creature to integrate better with the form, and you have a nice painting there. The background works well-and the lighting overall is great. It reveals the form nicely.

MIKECORRIERO- Got my vote. I think you and JakkaS, get the most out of these on a consistent basis. You get a really great 'naturalist' approach. Very like an illustration from a guidebook, and in the best tradition of Wayne Barlowe.

-on the question of how my entry moves around- FERBLOOZLES have an organ that extends into n-dimensional space. This allows themselves to navigate the familiar 3-dimensional matrix at will. From our perspective, it is manifested as a localized disruption of the gravitational field. In effect, they levitate! (On reflection, I'd disrupt the background in the immediate vicinity of the FERBLOOZLE to add a touch of credibility to this notion.)

Now on to the Trash Monster!

Interesting batch of entries everyone. I was torn between Mike and Tyranx, but ended up going for Mike because I thought the idea was really solid, and showed some "outside of box" thinking.

Misledtomisery - Cool creature. I think your hot pink and yellows are competing though, and there doesnt seem to be a really obvious focal point. Also, your creature seems too light for a giant colossus. This guy would definitely be weightier.

Walnut - Cool creature, good color. The drawing seems wonky or off balance though, and could use a bit more anatomical study.

Tyranx - Your grasp of light and color is exemplary. I was THIS CLOSE to voting for yours... sorry, but be assured it was close. nice texture on his skin too... very believeable.

fuuryoku - Pretty cool beast. Also seems a bit off-kilter, perhaps the perspective is off somewhat. Also, you have warmer yellows in his hide on his hind legs, when really you should try to get your warmest hues up front, where the focal point is.

Yoszko - Cool concept. I think you may have gone a bit overboard with color, it doesnt feel very unified. Also, try to spend some time on your clouds and mist because they feel very "airbrushed" and not quite as natural and textured as the creature itself.

StephenR - Weird! Reminds me of those ugly little snub-nosed dogs with all its fur shaved off. Good lighting/clouds. The grass feels a bit too flat and way to "light green". Grass can be made up of a lot mor colors than just one evenly applied green.

Gorillagrin - Definitely a top runner. Great color/lighting. Also good action. For me though, it could have used a *smidge* more polish. Also, the legs feel like a bit of an afterthought and dont seem quite as realistic as the arms/shoulder.

Artastic - Bizarre creature man, I like how you think. It just feels a bit fuzzy, and undefined, and could benefit from some "carving" out of details. Also, he feels too flat, i think if you had less black in the shadows that might help. Also could use a little more time spent on the clouds.....

Jmac - Nice work. COuld benefit from a little more refinement and polish, but I love the concept. I think you definitely gave this one some thought.

Kian3001 - Also nice work. Good sense of drama, movement, and anticipation. I think you could have desaturated the background a bit more so that he really stands out a bit more.

Mike - Awesome. You definitely have your thinker thinking. The water could probably be splashing around abit more seeing as how it is currently being moved around.... that would also give it more movement, because right now the top part feels pretty static, while the bottom shows action. Love the grassy hair.

Soulweaver - Good concept, but the whole piece feels very flat, and could benefit from some warm hues to accentuate parts of the creature or the house... it needs more atmosphere, and your creature needs some more definition. Nice anatomy on the monster though.

Masque - VEry unique creature design. I wish the cape looked more luminescent though, plus, your creature isn't coming forward enough in the piece, the planets attract my eye first, as opposed to the creature.

hwango - cool idea. The composition of your piece needs a little work though. I wouldn't have chopped the ends of his wings off like that, instead, we should see the whole thing. The background needs some sort of overlap of background and creatue so that we can tell where the creature is, right now the mountains on the bottom could just as easily be in front of the creature as it could be behind it. Also, take a look at bat wings to get inspiration.

el coro - Nice! I like your creature, and how you imagined the people using it taking advantage of its' anatomy to control pulleys and levers and such, though it would probably really suck for those guys if the thing started going ape-shit and having a seizure. He doesn't feel quite as "heavy" as something this big must be. You do get the prize for best planet name though: "beavercunt7"

Jo B 1 - Not bad, though this guy could also have benefitted from a little bat-anatomy research. Long live GOOGLE!

Azathoth - Creepy concept.... I am a sucker for Cthuhlu-esque stuff myself. Not sure why you cropped it the way you did though. The top of the head of the one in the front is making a really glaring tangent with the top of the piece. I would have moved that one in the front a LOT closer for more dramatic perspective, and a nice opportunity to do some wicked eye-detail!

Undertow - Awesome creature. Yours was also a close second. Would have liked to have seen a bit more atrmosphere in that water.

Grendel Grack - Good pencil work. He needs a lil shadow though. Also, he looks like he might not be standing on a flat surface.....

Bruce Jensen - Another fav from this round. Would have liked to have seen a bit more finish to the items circling around his head. Cool colors!

BabylonCargoCult - Great creature. His body needs a little more "rounding out" and depth. Don't be afraid to go darker with your shadows in this case.

Zeitwolf - Hmmm. I guess the act of love-making aint a pretty sight. I feel sorry for that little boy with the wagon. :\

Phew! That covers it I think. Now I gotta get to work on my TRASH-MONSTER!

Woah, thanks for the comments and critiques guys. Hearing that I was allot of folks 2nd choice was really cool. Hell, even getting 1 vote is success in my book!:) Now that I'm off the vicodin, it's time to critique

Hwango: That's a pretty cool concept you've got in your description, the actual design fell a bit flat due to the background the character was in. Having the creature done as an ortho might have been cool with something showing a bit of a scale indicator may help the presentation a bit if the background painting skills aren't there. Good effort and keep putting in more entries!

Masque: Your concept reminded me allot of the Mi-go. If you're not sure what they are, look up some HP Lovecraft stuff on them. Overall it's a really solid idea but the piece is an over the shoulder camera angle which is a big no no for an illustration where you're introducing a character for the first time. I'd try throwing in some more atmospheric distortion on the ground to bring that thing up in the air, the left foot seems to be touching the ground but other visual cues point to it flying rather high in the atmosphere. You could also pull the legs in instead of them dangling there. Good effort, keep it up!

Soulweaver: You know I was actually thinking about doing a creature much like this myself before I settled on the squid thing. It's a cool idea that's really rough to illustrate. I'm not sure you really captured the feel of the creature really being in the dirt though. I would've recommended doing a cut away ala earth science illustration where you see the different layers of rock, dirt, a few dinosaur skeletons for effect.. (you know, the fun stuff) to really push the illustration more. Overall creature design seems alright but I'd have questions about why it has a mouth and eyes if it rarely moves. The large tail and claws also don't really make allot of sense to me in that regard. Once again though, that was a rough concept to tackle, you get props for even giving it a shot!

Mike C.:
Dance your cares away,
Worry's for another day.
Let the music play,
Down at Fraggle Rock.
Heh, busting your balls man. Yet another great concept, well illustrated. I've really been digging your latest creatures, there's been some awesome growth in your style and actual application over the last 5 or 6 months. You got my vote because my wife liked your piece, in my eyes it was tied with Bruce's but my wife won the tie breaker.

kian: Cool concept, well illustrated but too humanoid. Overall it's a great render but the anatomy seems really wonky to me. Those hands come off as an extra bend that shouldn't be there at first glance. A bit more focus on realistic anatomy would really help this one allot. Great illustration, looking forward to seeing what you submit next!

J.Mac: Another well painted piece but the concept is way too humanoid. Grab a bunch of reference on various types of animals, insects and fish and study them to try and push the design a bit more. Great illustration, looking forward to seeing what else you would come up with if you gathered more reference!

artastic: that's one crazy cool concept. Like the previous 2 guys I'd recommend grabbing more reference. Check out insect anatomy and draw more from it for something like this. The concept is definitely there, the render and anatomy are what's separating it from being truly magnificent! Great effort, keep putting in those hours and you'll be owning these COW's in no time!

gorillagrin: Great render! This one was another one of the ones I skipped straight over because it's so humanoid in appearance. Push yourself a bit harder in the concept stage! You obviously know what you're doing when it comes to anatomy and painting, don't sell yourself short. Great looking piece though.

Stephan_R: Pretty piece, great concept. Camera angle would've made this one a killer if you went a bit more extreme on the perspective. I dig the concept and the illustration, can't wait to see more!

Yoszko: Cool concept, nice illustration, but the background feels really flat. It seems like you had the same issue that I had with showing more area in the water. The actual text description makes me thing that you had an idea for the creature but no real background for it when you did the piece. I suffered a very similar issue with mine. Good work!

fuuryoku: Cool concept and illo. The front legs don't really do it for me as in, they make the movement seem like it would be a pain in the arse to animate. The feet also seems overly large and take away quite a bit from the design. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can do in future COW's. Good job overall, keep submitting!

Tyranx: Well, you've obviously got the majority vote here just for the render so you know you're doing that well;) The design falls extremely short for me though. The scales and the spikes don't seem to fit the creature as they're inconsistent and don't really have any rhyme or reason. The body looks like it was based off elephant anatomy but comes off really rubbery. I'm with Mike on the ropes and the head kind of comes off as an afterthought. I'd love to see what you can do if you play allot more with varying anatomical structures from a few different real life animals.
Overall, great sense of scale, great looking environment, and extremely well rendered piece!

walnut: Great use of shapes! I really like the creatures design but the render and the story fall a bit flat for the final presentation. You're going to be an animal when you get those render skills up there a bit.

misledtomisery: Lots of potential! The piece comes off allot as 'Ugliest dog in the world with a city strapped on its back';) It's mostly the render that's hurting you. Keep at it and you'll crank out some winners!

Zeitwolf: By far the cutest concept this round. The only thing that didn't get the volume of votes is the render. Keep at it!

BabylonCargoCult: Great render, cool creature. You were #3 on my list behind Mike and Bruce. Can't wait to see what else you've got up your sleeve.

Bruce: Tied with Mike as my favorite.. maybe a bit more weight on yours but you can blame my wife for the tie breaker. Only thing I'd say is blow it up a bit more for final presentation and experiment with the eyes more. Kind of reminds me of a Dali painting.

Grendelgrack: Cool concept. Your main weakness is that you're not pushing your values hard enough in the piece. It reads really flat as a result. The other problem, (and one that I had in the past) is that no one tends to vote for the pencil entries which I think is a shame but then again, it has to be a reallllly well rendered piece in pencil to get the votes. Keep it up, and don't be afraid to dive into color!

Undertow: Focus more on the background before you design anything. First impression 'Oh look, it's a squid with different anatomy', BOOOORING! If it has a Japanese folklore origins, make it look like it does. Way to try and save yourself with some half assed design work hack. Work on your atmosphere, it sucks horribly. The composition is ok but could use a bit more originality. Keep working on your painting, you'll get there with time. Don't give up!

Azathoth: You know, it's funny, I've been working on a pen and paper RPG called CthulhuTech for almost 3 years now so the first thing I thought when I saw your user name was 'Be prepared for a reference to the Great Old Ones';) Your background could lend to some really interesting visual creations but could stand for a bit more originality. Stay away from the Lovecraft and pull from your mind and imagination, we know it's there! Work on those foundation skills with perspective and life drawing. Once you've gotten a strong grasp on the basics it will really help you push your designs a bit more to get a better sense of depth. Keep it up, you'll get there yet!

Jo B 1: Well, I think Mike C hit the nail on the head with this one. Good effort though and keep at it!

Only thing I'd say is blow it up a bit more for final presentation...
