Daisy wanders the moon, stricken with guilt and failure, that is, if a clockwork collosus can have such emotion.
She was a hard working giant, given 'Southern charm'. She single handedly created the colony for the makers until one day the makers started to stop functioning. She could build and build, but she couldn't stop the disease. All that remains on the lonely moon is a ghost colony and thousands of caskets for those that were buried, their red lights shining toward the heavens and into Daisy's lonely LED eyes.

The Atlas Administrator ran the entire operation of moon 407 until they replaced him with a new operating system. His gigantic clockwork body was jettisoned on the nearby waste disposal planet. sadly they no longer use the alloys that make his massive frame and so, beaten and torn he lies there waiting to rust away. With any luck the primative native life forms will proclaim him a God, or a least, take up residence in his hollow shell.

Abandoned by its makers, the Colossus has begun to change its surroundings. No one fully knows the motive behind its actions, but some have speculated. Some believe that the Colossus creates these monoliths to mimic its own figure, in a way creating friends. Others believe that the monoliths represent the tall buildings of the ancient civilization. Still, others believe that they are a form of communication, a call for help, to anyone who can see them. We may never know the true meaning of these formations.

When he was first built, the people did cheer.
They marvelled his sight, their hearts were sincere.
For it’s existence marked a new frontier.
But to the colossus, it’s purpose was unclear.
He stood very still for more than a year.
He felt so alone, no stories to hear.
One day, he took a stroll and crushed all who held him dear.
Tick and Tack did the windings of his gear.
Now he was all alone, alone on this ruined sphere.
And all he ever wanted, was a listening ear.

On a small moon the clockwork colossus stands waiting for the return of his creators, he has toiled and finished preparing the rock for colonization. The completion signal has been sent, he now only has to wait for their reply. He looks forward to their arrival as he will be dismantled and will become the hart of a glorious new city but for now he merely waits looking to the sky for the signal and creators that will never come…

The poor clockwork colossus wandered the moon for many more years, carving twisting paths in the ashen surface. His search would yield no results, his labour would bear no insight into his plight. His singular purpose was to find a companion, someone to tell him the time. For if he knew the time, he would know when his creators would return, and he could be content.

But the true irony of his plight lay not in his blind obediance, nor in his inability to see that which was so close. The true irony was that his makers did not, and never had planned to return. They cared not for the clockwork colossus, or his endless and pointless journey for false hope.

As the rust of ages consumed him and his gears eventually wore to dust, the colossus' one regret was that he never stopped worrying about the time for long enough to sit, and admire the endless beauty of life that spread out around him.

nice varied approaches again this week, but voting for Blaise - i really like the epic sense of scale and atmosphere. So well done you!

Cheers, MM. Much appreciated.

I went with onionface. Even though it's fairly small I absolutely love the kind of steampunk mecha you've got going. Very nice encorportation of clockwork - Great engineering, looks like it could actually work.

Awesome entries everyone.

also hjalli, cognition and all others, there were so many great entries, it was hard to decide...

onionface: I like what i see, wished it was a bit bigger and more detailed

oregano: Nice pic! Especially the background

Blaise: U got my vote man! This pic has really got a desolate atmosphere, as if it was a ancient and giant robot from earlier ages! Composition is great... man everything just fits in right!

Ive: Same as Blaise. Great composition and atmosphere. The only thing i didnt really knew was whether the colors were working for me. But i guess thats a personal thing.

redehlert The story and the fact that its a female robot works totally for me! Her emotions can be read easy and i like the characterdesign. Her pose makes her look clumsy tho, dont know if that was intentional

Walnut: Good and simple concept. The pic really breathes out the theme of being abandoned.

chaosrocks: Different story than most pics in here, me likes. I like the composition aswell... but the quality is not at its best, to say the least. I can see the pixels, otherwise it would have been a better piece.

goran: Great rendering and background. Cant really figure out how the robot works tho, maybe its me being dumb :P.

VampireHungerStrike: Fun story and GREAT lightning. Really love this piece, only downside to it is that i dont really get the feeling that it is a collossus and thus big.

MonkeYoakum: Lovely composition and design. Background and textures could have been better. Cool entry!

cognition.sb: Great colors, great characterdesign and love that DONG, haha. You almost got my vote man, no crits and very good entry.

cakeypigdog: Cool design man. Its a shame tho u didnt include a little story. Because when i look at ur piece things come into my mind like: Why is there a whole city on his back. Nonetheless its a very solid piece.

possessed: That poem really empowers ur pic. Great lightning aswell. Tnx for sharing :D

charcoal: I liked ur sketch in the CHOWthread better, but this one is rocking too.

meeatu: Wow! I really dont know whats going on haha. Im eager to hear a bit of an explenation from you so i can understand!

bumskee: When i saw the subject (Clockwork colossus) i really didnt thought of the design u came with, very original. A little backgroundstory would have helped to empower ur piece tho.

BRANDISH: This piece roxxorz! :P He sure looks like a collossus, background should have been a bit more worked out, but overall i think this pic is fantastic!

Trashy: It sure does look like a mechanic collossus. But i dont know how it works, what its function is: Can u explain a bit?

RES: Fantastic story and fantastic colors! Ur design is not really what i had in mind for a clockwork collossus, but it works and i dig it!

Form: Its a pitey you didnt had time to work this one out, i like the idea.

Hjalli Cool design!

I liked this CHOW so much i thought: Hey lets comment on those brave artists! So now u know how i feel about ur pics :P
Dont take crits to personal plz and srry for possibly bad english, its not my native language

Form's entry for me - not as flashy as the others, but I really like the design, and the overall quirkiness. Good entries all around!

April 10th, 2006, 08:28 AM
Blaise for me. The scope is just enormous. It reminds me of everything I loved about the old sci-fi pics... feeling very, very small. Close second to Brandish for the same reason. Awesome work this week everyone.

Lewis Thanks for the comment
I'll have to watch the resoulution of the posted image I always try to keep it small for Photobucket. Because , of course there are no pixels in the original image.. It's an oil painting. But thanks anywayI was just glad to make the poll this time...since I skirted around some of the description and its only barely a 3/4 figure. I was assuming this one would get dumped. I'll come back and vote alter when I have time to really look what a lot of amazing entries!

If any one described colosus visualy I would have to say Blaise's, closely folowed by Bradish. Nice variety this time around.

I went with onionface. Even though it's fairly small I absolutely love the kind of steampunk mecha you've got going. Very nice encorportation of clockwork - Great engineering, looks like it could actually work.

Awesome entries everyone.

Thanx.
it's at about 50% the original.
I like being able to see the whole image on the screen at once, I don't like seeing the top half of a pic then having to scroll down the rest - cuz then you have to reopen it to enjoy it in it's entirety.
but in this case perhaps it is a bit too small.
anyway - next time.

Yea, that's a fair point, onion - It's either details or readability. Although if you press F11 in firefox (not sure about IE) it compacts it for a little more room.

Anyway, thanks all for the votes/comments so far. I'm actually quite surprised.
heh, Lewis - glad you like the 'DONGGG'. Wasn't sure whether everyone would read it correctly (as a clock's hourly 'dong' sound), but it seems people are getting it.

Larriva Art
April 10th, 2006, 12:32 PM
Awesome entries! It was really close for me between Cognition and Redehlert. I suppose the clincher was the great ruined city in Redehlert's, and how sad the colossus looks.

I also really liked Blaise's, but I didn't think it conveyed any character.

imp_pixel
April 10th, 2006, 12:50 PM
Fantastic entires all around. I was sad I couldn't get something done since it was a great topic, but it's great to see so many different ideas. Blaise got my vote this time since it imparts the epic and alien so well. Love the textures in the rendering as well (esp how it makes the moons look in the bg).

Man, tough decision. I really wanted to go with Bliase or Brandish...really great mood in both of those. But I didn't feel either one of them evoked enough of a "character." Blaise's seemed more of an environment, and Brandish's seemed too remote and disconnected from the character he's about to step on.

I ended up going with Gorans because I felt that not only did it seem to be this large, enigmatic monstrosity, it also seems to be curious, which gives it a bit of personality.

redehlert
April 10th, 2006, 01:28 PM
Cognition.sb gets my vote this week, but I must say it was a hard choice indeed. So many incredible depictions and the rendering were simply jaw dropping. Other favs were well, everyone! Each entry had something I learned from and just adored.
Great job all and thanks for the votes thus far!

Someone asked if her body posture/gate was intentionally clumsy - the answer is yes, she's very much aware of her surroundings littered with the 'tombstones'. :)

Cheers!

Spectacular entries here. Since this is the CHARACTER of the week thread I went for Oregano. Emphasis on Character. Other entries were definitly executed well, but not what the descript calls for.

April 11th, 2006, 12:23 AM
Wow.......talk about some real awesome entries.

I had a real hard time voting for this one. It all came down to redehlert, cakeypigdog, bumskee for me. I had to go with cakeypigdog piece though. I love the playfullness to the whole machine it almost has to it. Nice sense of size and nice clockwork detailing on him also. I'm usually a sucker too when it comes to anything that has buildings on top of it, but I think you did a nice overall job with this whole piece too and there is alot of character in this giant.

Erilaz
April 11th, 2006, 02:02 AM
I went with Bumskee's for it's swooping majestic flair. It seemed a little more original and powerful.

April 11th, 2006, 03:06 AM
My vote went to Ive, because of the cheerful mood and also because his giant really has a lot of character.

I voted Brandish. I think that pic encompasses the breif the most. Blaises' entry kinda looks like Brandish' except destroyed.

I voted for Blaise. It reminds me of the type of stuff from Shadow of the Colossus. The piece captures that feeling of being a huge thing and the atmosphere is awesome.

I voted Cognition as colossal and character nicely rendered

special praise to
Bumskee
Form- I love the character on this one

Thanks to pixelherder, Lewis, iomoon, GatorKyle, Hjalli, imp pixel, monami, griff, and everyone else for the support. I've gotta say I'm shocked because, just to repeat what others have said, there are so many great entries. I also agree with the crits that mine (and some others) don't show much in the way of "character". Hopefully I can do better next time around.

I narrowed my vote down to three - Redehlert, coginition.sb, and BRANDISH. In the end I voted for BRANDISH since his included a "desolate moon".

Maybe it's just the topic, but I really like ALL of them. Great job everybody!

nephilim
April 13th, 2006, 06:23 AM
i totally missed my own topic! d'oh!

i was really impressed with alot of the great work on this one. My vote went to Blaise, cause he really hit the nail on th head. The colossus is very massive, almost as much as some of the machinery in a John harris painting. and nobody does it better than john harris. Its suitably ancient, and i like its repose. it really looks like its been lying their for millions or even billions of years, which is what i envisioned.

props go to goran and onionface, goran i really like the way its bulk reaches forward with a tiny appendage, but the colors were a bit too dark(might be my monitor).
