hehe, ok you want to know what a noseeum is? ;)
Noseeum
Noseeums are creatures that exist when you're not looking directly at them, invisible when you do...
Thank you very much Gloklund for this topic...where are you maaaaaaannn???
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- No individual Character! Design a species!
- if not obvious post a description of your concept!

Forgive me for nitpicking, but how do you draw something noone can see? Regardless of that it still sounds like a nice challenge. I'll give this one some thought ...
Fozzybar
March 25th, 2006, 06:53 AM
come on...of course you are supposed to draw the creature when it's present in appearance...

Interesting. It could be sort of like looking at something in the dark. The cones in your retina which see color are arranged in the middle. The rods which see value are arranged more towards the edges. In near darkness, where almost no color and only subtle differences in value are reflected off objects, if you look directly at them, you can't see them, but if you look out of the corner of your eye you can start to see shapes. In the movie Silence of the Lambs, near the end, when the killer has shut off all the lights in his basement and watches Jodie Foster's character through the night vision goggles, that's what she's trying to do: navigate the dark basement with her peripheral vision.
Of course, that's an attempt at creating an analogy based in a real world phenomenon. Could just be magic.

Heh I was almost hoping after not being able to make the last one that this one would be an easier topic. No luck there I guess though. I mean there aren't any descriptive words to go along with this creature at all, just a name that doesnt really help in the process. I mean think of it this way. If the creature is unable to be seen when you look at it or perhaps it makes itself that way when you look at it then does it really matter at all what it looks like? It could be a pink wombat that shoots pixie sticks out its ass and you could simply say that it can turn invisible in the description of it, seems kinda sketchy to me. This is almost like that one CoW entitled Freestyle where everyone was allowed to do anything. This topic is so open ended that its much more difficult than a topic with lots of specifications. Id say since we are only provided with the least amount of details possible that we have to show some aspect of them. Therefore the creature has to be shown either phasing into invisibility or exhibiting how it makes itself invisible. Otherwise like I previously stated its just a make anything week and there wont be any cohesive theme behind the creatures at all. Who knows? Im just throwing these concerns out there to see what people think.

And now ladies and gentlemen....drumroll please.......BRAINSTORM (insert thunder sound effect). Ah yes it must be that time again. When I do my small part to grease the wheels of creativity and get the art train rolling, choo choo all aboard bitches. Alright so like I previously stated, not an easy topic to work with. When you get right down to it this project names the creature and gives a sentence fragment concerning what it does. Not much to work with. However that wont stop alot of you and if I have time (doubtful) it wont stop me either. Ok so to begin with we are dealing with a creature that works outside the normal laws of nature. It puts chameleons to shame. Now this creature can be any size really but since it is still in existence even when its invisible I highly doubt it would be very large. If something is big enough someone would run into it and discover it regardless of its cloaking ability. So I would say in terms of scale dont make this thing very large, maybe about 5 ft. tall at the most. Remember this is a creature who is named for its ability to escape discovery so everything about it needs to promote stealth, big creatures are not stealthy. When thinking about the overall appearance of the creature take into consideration some animals here on the planet earth that are stealthy. What makes them so elusive and how do they remain hidden? Also take into consideration that this creature has to be aware of its surroundings at all times to avoid being seen by anyone or anything. So it will have to have extremely good vision and some mechanism with which it can view every concievable angle around it quickly. Now then of course the most important part of this little animal is how it achieves invisibility. It can be through any number of abilities. Perhaps its magical and its an innate ability. Or maybe the creature is highly advanced and it possesses a tech-based cloaking ability. Or it could simply vanish through some specialized organic means, such as light bending mechanisms within its skin. Who knows? The possiblities for this are endless because of how open ended it is. Another thing to consider is that the Noseeum will have to have extremely fast reflexes. It only takes a few seconds to turn your head and within those few seconds the Noseeum has to be able to hide itself, once again leading me to believe that this should be a small and speedy animal. For whatever reason when I hear the name I think of things like little goblins or gnomes, just sounds like a name I heard once before in a book of mythical creatures. In reality Noseeums are actually very small mosquito like insects that exist in cloud like swarms near streams and lakes. Maybe the creature could have an insect-like quality to it and tie in with its real life counterpart, just something to consider. I already have my idea for this thing, not sure if I like it but its a start. As always good luck all.

You know again, out of simple real world examples, there's an animal I read about called the owl monkey. They have the kind of rod based retinal vision I was talking about before but throughout their whole eye. And they are completely 100% nocturnal. In fact, if their eyes were exposed to daylight, they would go blind. It's a jumping off point. I was also reading about stealth technology. There are techniques they use for plain visible light and not just radar... like painting the ship a camoflague grey and then internally lighting it's corners and undercuts so it doesn't cast shadows on itself, rendering it invisible when looked at directly.
I think there are interesting points of departure with this.

March 25th, 2006, 11:17 PM
Nexus- I really appreciate the time you put into laying out your thoughts for these. I do like the idea of this thing being a smaller being instead of some overgrown monstrosity trying to eat people when the people don't see it. It's makes a whole lot of sense with it being evasive and stealthy. I think the biggest question we might want to ask ourselves is why does it not want to be seen? Does it want to be invisible so it can study other species, evade them, or sneak attack on them, or does it use it's invisibility to possibly steal from other creatures too. I think using its powers to definitely evade something stands for all of these, but I think it can also have another agenda to it. What would you do if you were invisible?
Fozzybar- I might have to figure this one out on my own but...If I was say looking at a mirror and one of these creatures were behind me, would I still be able to see it in the mirror since I'm not looking at it directly?

damn, this will be interesting...but for some reason I can't help thinking of Luigi's Mansion ;)
I was thinking of the ghosts from mario too. The ones that come after you until you look at them and they stop.
This does sound interesting. The variables are open ended. The verbage alone is subject to manipulation. They only "exist" when you arent looking at them. "Invisible" when you look at them. Invisible, for example. Are they invisible as in not able to be seen? Invisible as in disguised? Lots of fun to be had

It's up to your own imagination with waht concept you come up with...as long as the definition is that your creature can't be seen when you look at it but it shows when you don't look at you can handle the mirror thingie as you want...

Here what I have so far. The Noseemees are little goblin like creatures, who are completely harmless and very shy. They like to show off their courage to each other by showing how close they dare to fly up to a human! Of course, as soon as the human turns around, they'll chicken out and quickly turn invisible!

Scumsumlum - Scums is the answer for the biggest question in the universe... What the hell is going with pairs of socks... how many socks you lost in your life? No one, beacause the Scums thief it, and build a nest form stealed socks in the darkest places in your house. Why you can't see them? Hm, do you see a lamp on his nose? This little thing produce something like 'Invicible Field' that cover the Scums when someone try to see them. They are harmless little creatures, but stole a lot of socks and create myths around this proceder...

Noseeum
Noseeums are an incredibly curious species that have always co-existed with man. While their purpose is unknown, some believe the creatures are God's eyes; eternally watching over the world. It was only in the 24th Century that their presence was confirmed and consequently exploited by the Global Domain.
The GD is a world-wide government organisation that captures and equips these creatures with surveillance masks before releasing them back into the community. By exposing these creatures to strong electromagnetic fields their natural camouflage can be temporarily subdued, allowing scientists to work with them in clear view. The sheer number of Noseeums available allows for almost all city regions to be observed with a mass visual link-up to GD facilities.
Noseeums' commercial use ranges from hazard assessment to early crime detection.

FINAL VERSION
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c207/TrashCaretaker/Noseeum.jpg
These noseeums(also known as eye-lods) are an intelligent small group of creatures that are currently being overrun by another species that find the noseeums head to be quite a delicacy for food. The noseeums main head consists of many eyeballs that allow it to see in multiple directions. It follows in the path that it's two large eyes at the top of its head points in.
The noseeums has built a mechanism inside their bodies to disappear so their enemy can’t spot them. This machine creates another dimension to their world they like to call the "cloud plane". They drift about in these planes of endless cloud cover until their enemy turns away from their view. They can see into their actual dimension using their two larger eyes again.
They can't stay in these "cloud planes" for too long though, since it seems to suck their life force away, so they only turn invisible when they could possibly be spotted.
They are currently scouting their enemy out, trying to find as much information about them as possible and communicating their findings telepathically to others. With this information they soon plan to blow their enemies to smithereens with advanced weapon technology and avenge their headless comrades.

Vanishing Eyedra
It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Sometimes, one can look directly into the soul of another through the eyes... and some, may possess it.
Deep within the Marjae Sea sleep a breed of monsters, sailors avoid sailing this sea because they fear awakening them. Legend has it that by gazing into the tranquile waters, even by shore, the waters become alive and gaze back into the eyes of the viewer. The monsters awaken to rise and look into the soul of the person, and possess it for themselves. The unfateful victim is un-aware however, since they become mesmerized and gradually they begin to loose their eyesight, while they continue to watch the waters. For the briefest moment, just before they go blind, the monsters appear before them: the dreaded Eyedra, an enourmous beast composed of many tentacled eyes. The eyes of its victims that it adds and grows to its massive body, growing in proportion and in numbers with each new prey. And just as quickly as the Eyedra becomes visible, it vanishes again into nothing, stealing eyes, stealing lives... stealing souls. What is left of the victim is an eyeless, mindless but still living body, without soul. Their bodies become terribly cold, and they die a horrible, convulsioned and violent death months after.
Legend has it that a hero will come forth to slay the Eyedra, one born without the gift of sight. The unfavoured hero will slay the Eyedrah and become champion, and latter King.
Or so Legend has it...

"PEEPER"
Sorcerers from Kalimshtag Archipelago created these creatures especialy for spying. These small creatures are very intelligent, because their brains are very big and they can easily learn a lot of new things. They know a few languages used on the Archipelago, so they can understand almost all races living in this part of the world. At the begining they were used to spy on other mages and nobles to obtain their secrets such a magic formulas or informations that could be used to blackmail. They were bound with their creators, so they had to obey them. However, they finally discovered the way to freedom, they did be created to get other people' secrets. When they became free they started to serve for money or other valuable things [Nobody knows why, because they have never bought anything].
***
Why are they so good in spying? Because they can become invisible. Their skin has many bubbles that are full of "living silver". These liquid metal bubbles can enlarge and when are big enough covers whole creature. The surface of this big silver bubble looks like a mirror that reflects the surrounding. But it's not a reflect, that is visible in a particular bubble. Image seen in front of Pepper is shown in his back, so it looks like you are able to see through his body. The deflection caused by angle of refraction can be only perceived in indirect look. This process is very quick but sometimes [rarely] when the creature is not well concentrated become almost visible, because image on the silver surface looks like image on the broken mirror. When caught out spying it uses sound waves to stun the person that noticed its present. Its hobby is to .....peep at naked girls having a bath.

Noseeum or better known as the boogey man was once thought of as a childhood fantasy has recently been uncovered as a legendary creature as old as the earth itself. These solitary creatures feed off of the imagination of children before they reach adolescence. Once light touches the skin of the creature it becomes transparent, but with the use of infared lights, and tracing the brain waves of small children scientists were able to uncover traces of these mysterious beasts.

The dust bunny is a small, harmless dustivore with a interesting camouflage and escape mechanisms. The 'feathers' are actually reflective scales that render the animal almost without contrast. The result of this is that it can only be viewed out of the corner of the eye, where the density of more contrast-sensitive rods is higher (Look it up!) If the animal is approached, however, it will flash two specialized scales (normally held flat against the back) containing high-contrast 'eyespots'. This will invariably cause a startle reflex in the target animal as the, heretofore, invisible creature is suddenly revealed. In the ensuing chaos, the dust bunny makes it's escape.

Muscae Volitantes, aka Flying Flies or No-see-ums are clinically known as shadowy shapes that appear solo in your field of vision. Quite distracting, these creatures can be perceived, but never looked upon directly. They live within the vitreous humour, a jelly-like substance of the eye and appear on the retina as shapes as seen in this eye looking up at the sky (see inset). These creatures become more visible at the periphery of the eye, but when a host focuses his or her eyes on the creature turning this way and that, the poor creature is shifted within the eye and therefore seemingly alluding direct perception. As annoying as this may be, these creatures very much want to be seen by their host, but alas, they will only be felt as disturbances across the field of vision.
When these aesexual creatures reproduce to get rid of that lonely feeling, they increasingly distract its host by further clouding the vision. Sometimes these creatures leave the eyes and migrate to the brain and ears chattering incessantly which is commonly coined as 'voices inside the head' and 'tinnitus', aka ringing of the ears. This can become so profound and disturbing that the host will self medicate or end their existence.

This account is true; i really hope that isn't going to be a problem.
it was only until i got a dog and witnessed him start barking and running towards something that isn't there, that i realized maybe i wasn't losing my mind. well, i probably was, but he was barking at something. :)
i started seeing, or rather, catching a terrifying glimpse of these horrible, reeking apparitions when i worked the graveyard shift at a 24HR Pop-Copy back in my college town. It happened mostly at points when because of one reason or another began feeling very sleep deprived and INSANE, or hadn't EATEN properly for a day or two, staring blankly at some badly compressed jpg turned MS word document turned pdf-ing nightmare and then WRONGLY turned into a 48" x 96" oversize poster, and listening to HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE noise music blaring into my ears, soothing the loneliness AND anger. I caught a slight glimpse of one of these creatures, staring at me through a couple of panes of glass, just beyond our xeroxn4525 printer in the self serve computer area--Not a second after i had seen it, it VANISHED into a puff of SULFURY yellow haze and was gone. I thought at first that the glowing yellow eyes and the drooling mouth were some binging, CRAZED CRACKWHORE collapsing from an eXXXhausting day of panhandling and probably ready to whip out a switchblade or a rusted revolver on me for $2 ... but, when i trembling walked over, FREAKED OUT OF MY SKULL there was NOTHING there, only the smell of ROTTEN YELLOW TOENAILS, a WET DROOL SPOT on the carpet and the dimly-lit Florescent hum of DOOMED projects put off until the very, VERY last minute...
Since then, it has become my theory that this particular creature is maybe following me??? Sometimes i feel it in the same room as me, drooling, stinking, glowing yellow more saturated and a sicker shade than incandesent tungsten bulbs would naturally produce. It's feet are designed for moving stealthily, and if it catches up to me without my noticing and sinks its horrible claws into my brain i will then be prone to doing some evil deeds; maybe ignore my drawing development or just horde crap obsessively or worse. Unfortunately it puts me in a bad place to try and get out of. maybe these things are demons; i know they are there after the sun goes down, always stalking me. I'm not sure how to get rid of them, or that i ever can.
all the best,
joel

bluefooted- Best style so far! Your linework is beautiful in that drawing, fascinating creation also.
Defiled- You maybe didn't fully finish all the way but you choose a real good angle on that piece. I think you actually got the best sense of dimension and space then any other piece so far here.
guggenmaneuver- Good style too! That head is pretty wicked!

My noseeum is a Night-mare, a shadow horse if you will. It in all actuality is your shadow, and it haunts you and feeds off your insecurities till you die. When you die, it haunts the spot you died at, and becomes the next passerby's shadow.

I wasn't going to enter this week due to mass amounts of homework, but when I saw JakkaS demanding more entries I couldn't help but do a quickie. (The activity is named after him, after all. ;)) Nothing special, I took the first idea I had and ran with it.
http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c27/Plate11/contest%20entries/aeromites.jpg
Aeromites - these harmless dust-sized creatures exist in the air in practically every environment. They tend to grow large populations in dry stale areas like underground tombs, and in such areas they sometimes congregate by the hundreds of thousands into visible masses called wisps, similar to the way some types of fish form schools. If disturbed by the presence of another creature, these masses will rapidly dissipate into the air, rendering the individual aeromites practically invisible again. Early sightings of wisps were often mistaken for ghosts, and even though their shapes are amorphous, people who manage to catch a rare glimpse of one still sometimes claim to see an eerily ghost-like face in it in the split second before it disappears into thin air.

Don't really have a good story for him. . . these guys remain hidden in the shadows (original, eh?). Release a thick, black vapour from vents in head and torso whenever in the range of human eyes, thus blending perfectly with surrounding shadows. Peripheral vision tends to pick up movement of these creatures inside their vapourous cloud. These creatures are envious of humans, as we possess sight; they don't. Ironically, they tend to invoke that feeling of "being watched" in anyone nearby. Maybe its gas causes disease and general depression or something. That's it. Sorry I didn't put more time into it, I only found this tonight. Cool topic. Awesome entries people!

These creatures live in the infrared zone. which is why they can't be seen. They are glimpsed only occasionally by people with high fevers. I saw one once when I had the Rubella. But of course I dismissed it as fever hallucination.

Hilarious concept, JakkaS. I love his facial expression, it's so perfect. Rendering is quite cool too. Good stuff in this thread, I've got a lot of catching up to do, haven't posted for about a year.

The Noseeum is a creature that lives on earth and can not be seen when directly looked at. The only exceptions is big bird, cats and dogs. So next time you see your pets barking or hissing at nothing, you now know what it is. Ghosts are also now thought to have been Noseeums seen out of the corner of the eye. This Mr Suffelupagus sorry I mean Noseeum is a curious chap and is currently interested in women’s tits.

Hey guys. At last some interesting updates!
Red - great idea!
Chuck,mate.
April 2nd, 2006, 04:07 AM
bluefooted - beautiful. though the mass of this creature may be too big for those little legs.
rWDrk - looks good. maybe some more detail for the lower part of this guy.
trickynick1001 - very good light and shade. but isn`t it too much of a humanoid for this activity? dunno.
redehlert - cute cute cute. :) only crit might be the image as a whole could use less texture work.
jakkas - very nice job. great idea, and the rendering and colors are superb. the face features aren`t too good though, they kinda interfere with the whole cuteness of this little guy there.
the mouth looks odd and the eyes are too big and loosely done.
and guys - come on... what`s with the "...jakkas, marry me! make love to me!! i want to carry your child!! you are Mr. CHOW!!..."?
relax people.
