I'm starting up a class next quater, it photography and I was wondering how could I get some amazing affects with the camra.

That's a bit vague. What is amazing?
Best advice is for you to find out by experimenting yourself, and also by looking at other photographer's work and incorporating aspects that you like into your own.
PHAIDON press have a nice collection of five books in one box, out now, each book with images and info about an individual experimental photographer. Maybe if you can get your hands on that you might get some ideas about "amazing" effects that you could try. But failing that... any collection of famous photographs should offer some inspiration.
