Well i have a liberal interpretation of those terms ;) but here is the first connection i made.
but hell, it could be a submarine and a dock ontop of a kelp forest, it could be a gigantic "city canopy" and spaceships. Have fun looking for ideas and when you catch one run with it. :)
February 7th, 2006, 06:04 PM
ooh, i'm definitely doing this. nice topic!
February 8th, 2006, 06:43 AM
might try my hand at this... bit scary as i sucksuck suck at environments.. need to practice!
February 8th, 2006, 11:52 AM
.I was there
where the whales were singing,
under a canopy of millenium ice
the gods descend
onto blue stairs of depth
but I didn't heard a thing,

Goran, you'll probably get my vote regardless of what entries will come in later :-)
Don't rely on this, though... ;-P
I love it!
Those airships rock! It has the same crispness like your DSG Emperor's ship.
But one crit: you could clean up the black border, which still has some texture layer spills on it, unless it was done on purpose ;-)
I won't do this one.

Goran, that sir, is a beautiful piece of art you got there. I have returned to this page about 3 times now just to look at it, finally had to say something about it. Hope I get me COW finished in time to get an entry here, and I hope my entry comes out half that good when its done. Love the color, perspective, the ships. Much respect.
February 8th, 2006, 02:32 PM
Hideyoshi-thanks man and the revision is done
artiphats-thank you sir
February 8th, 2006, 02:38 PM
am feeling quite intimidated and mouse-like (a small and humble creature)
but here is my final
The deepforest mages of Talin meditate in peace in their treetop Do-jos. When they wish to visit their fellows They travel in the slow gracefull Air trolleys. If a Mage sees their fellow approach they have time and luxury to prepare for the elaborate hospitality ceremonies which pass for social contact among these naturally reclusive people.

Great perspective Goran. I saved it straight to my 'inspiration' folder :)
I don't really dare to post here, but that EoW thing looks like a good opportunity to practice more and harder. So anyways, here i go :blahblah:
"Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen! Please fasten your seatbelts, we approach for landing now. Looks like a great warm summer morning! Sun's shining, covered by some little clouds and it's already a temperature of 24 °C. We approximately have 6 minutes left until we land on c4x city. Enjoy the beautiful view over the largest harbour on this planet with its gigantic Tower. Have a great day!"
February 9th, 2006, 04:51 PM
this is really gorgeous ..but doesn't "Canopy" imply a forest is involved somehow? and the top of the forest at that?
February 9th, 2006, 06:35 PM

Yes, I'm "that guy" :)
February 9th, 2006, 10:52 PM
ok I should done that......geez 12 more ideas.. just riffing on the different definitions..I of course was using 1 c. (1).... not to be confused with a canape´
harbour which would involve, little pickles
February 10th, 2006, 01:14 AM
Wippin' and placeholdin'...
... and Chaos, jus' so's you don't feel bad, I will shamelessly be using "definition 1 c. (1)"... but not entirely... :)
The Jungles of Mehlia
In a forest where canopies rise above canopies, the giant Mehlium Trees take flight. Saplings become infused with gas, converting nutrients and minerals within wooden chambers during their growth cycle. As they reach maturity, these gas-inflated behemoths pull from the earth to hover above the jungle, bloated sentinals watching over a lush, tangled wilderness. Trading guilds take advantage of these floating havens, whose gas they harvest to power their own flying ships, carving harbors and outposts out of the trees themselves.
A warning to any industrious engineer, that while these trees provide the means to travel anywhere in the land, their refuge is not long lived. After a decade or so of self-sustained flight, the trees themselves slowly begin to die, using up their own stored resources. As they wither away, the drying hulks become susceptible to fires, turning a floating sanctuary into a violent conflagration.

nice work goran. surprised not to see more entries on this theme.
here is my progress on this so far on this.

A small community on the edge of civilization, Kalymeed is a last stop for adventurers and explorers headed into the great unknown. Kalymeed is well known throughout the kingdom for its potent brews such as the Wide Eyed Sloth and Devil’s Urine, brewed locally in the Itchy Monkey Pub.
February 10th, 2006, 09:54 AM
wow corrick... floating island (floating turnip?) I can't wait to see it. I may have to draw the liliputian port in the bed canopy though at some point...
February 10th, 2006, 10:08 AM
Tyranx, major points for the peg-leg guy. That's funny shit.
Chaos, yes, it's a floating turnip. I have a premonition that turnips are going to play a much more important role in the future of humanity, much more than the meager part they already perform. Sliced in a salad? Made into soup? Change is on the wind...
February 10th, 2006, 11:27 AM
Tryranx, nice entry. Many great details and really nice lightening.
February 10th, 2006, 01:12 PM
chortle......Turnips of the world unite! (would be a good substrate for the pig-headed hydra (see DSG).
anyway...up date. the right side is nearly done the left side needs work yet
February 10th, 2006, 07:48 PM
Right i better go to bed, would have had this done soon, but i've had to get a house, which has also stopped me going to montreal, GRRRRRR!! GRR!!
*edit* as far as i'm gonna get i think.
The Landscape of PB-435 is terribly invasive, the bright sunlight allowing the forest to reach enormous heights and grow quickly. While this doesn't hamper permanent building measure it makes maintaining a ground port incredibly difficult. The solution was simple, interplanetary traffic could dock in harbours well above the ground. Large amounts of greenery have been encouraged to grow over these harbours in order to blend them into the natural habitat and to save on heating.
Another less official explanation is that the shadier crews prefer not to be seen in the easily monitored bright open space.
February 10th, 2006, 07:53 PM
wow the entries this round are great!!!! Tyrnax that rocks, reminds me of the trading post by the water round a couple weeks ago.
February 11th, 2006, 09:18 AM
now thats what im talkin about! some excellent entries guys ^____^
make sure you have all your flavour text and all that jazz lined up :)
February 11th, 2006, 09:57 AM
Thanks for the reminder Red, I had forgotten to write it down, I know who these people are.....I forgot that everone else doesn't
February 11th, 2006, 03:42 PM
WOW, Corrick, really interesting concept.
February 11th, 2006, 03:57 PM
I agree, that kicks serious a$$!! I love the foreground blur, the color and expecially the lighting!
can't believe I really need to reconsider now whom to vote on...
Tyranx also rocks!
February 11th, 2006, 07:36 PM
Great work everyone :D
Heres my image
Canopy Harbor was the first settlement built to expand over seas shipping on the newly colonized planet Celestia. Slow and humble beginnings but it blossomed into a major tradeing post for the 1st continent Lemma. Canopy harbor has never been taken for it is a super strong like defense place. Yea. THats it. Being in a harbor and shit. yea.
February 12th, 2006, 02:53 AM
We landed on stealthy. Now we have to go through the virgin forest to get to the dark temple where the offering of princess is just taking place. We have to hurry up to save her.
February 12th, 2006, 03:40 PM
"Tied between the deep jungle and the heavily populated Ailas coast, a crucial highway connects traders from Ailas and the tribes who inhabit the forests. It is well known that without the food and timber supplied by the tribesmen, Ailas would have collapsed long ago despite its incredible technological advances."
February 12th, 2006, 04:20 PM
Here is what I came up with this week.
Despite the harsh weather, a Klag ship is seen flying toward one of the landing bays at Canopy Harbor. One of the main entrance points on the planet Kurri 7, once docked here passengers can find direct transportation to any of the planets 10,000 major cities.
February 12th, 2006, 04:34 PM
what an awesome round.
really a lot of great entries!
I think I´ll go with Corrick´s this time. The effect you achieved with this foreground-blur (and of course with colors) is great :)
This adds really a lot of depth and life to your piece.

Hey all, sorry to just squeeze in before the deadline.
The Culture had saved the wreckage of the massive L-31.046b, which like its predecessor had gone up in flames during the last Zeppelin raid of the war.
As a fitting tribute, Canopy Harbour was created as a reminder of Admiral Thornblade, the last hair-brained idealist ever to serve as a military commander.
Now Canopy Harbour is associated as one of the lesser ports off the Bay of Balabac where tourist cruise ships like to dock.

So basically I suck at finishing Environment of the Weeks. But here's my sketch, nonetheless
February 13th, 2006, 08:18 AM
i would like to say this:
i STINK at environments.
let`s continue shall we?
E.O.W Round 16: Canopy Harbour
Allen harbour, built on the green planet of Tutamay, was designed as a resting point (the first one in a series of harbours) for passing ships on their long journey from earth to earth2, located on the far end of the milky way.
sorounded by vegetation of all sorts, this harbour provides a giddy and invigorating amounts of fresh clean air, soothing and relaxing travelers from all across the galaxy.

I envy you all, but Goran you take the cake, i have never been so inspired by a picture, and a great concise background story for it as well, i have to ask though is it underwater, cause thats the swing i get on it, they have a very submarine look to them and plus talking about atlantis gives me that mind set, but anyway you win outright, and you inspire me to become a better artist so i could one day compare myself to you, ..................insane.
February 19th, 2006, 09:59 AM
PianoForte-Thanks man,I am glad I inspired you,It is underwater ha ha,wery bright underwater under the arctic ice.
March 9th, 2006, 02:22 AM
