Uuuuu.... I would love to know how you did these. Did you use a blending stump?
All three slightly differ, I like the first one the most.
I don't have any crtiques right now, can't point anything out!
EDIT: The first time I checked this thread, the photoshop portrait didn't come up, so I didn't notice it. Now that I see it, I see you render great, and realistic as well, no matter what medium so far. Except the only thin to work on would be your body. Right now, the neck and chest seem kind of like one blob. The shoulders seem kind of slouched, and broken.

Hey, sorry Gamerhomie- I'm new to this whole forum thing, haven't been back here since I posted those pics. Thanks for the compliments.
- As for your question: I only use blending stumps for detail because of the sharp points. other than that, I only use tissue(Kleenex) for the blending, and erasers for detail. Can't stand the stumps. The paper quality also helps.
- The photoshop painting isn't really a complete piece either. Basically just focused on the head- the first time I've ever used photoshop to do a painting like this. It was very time-consuming. I do need to go in and finish it up though.
Here's a detail...

Didn't go too crazy on the details- just enough to get me by in class.

I used a mirror as much as possible (mostly). But ended up taking photo's for reference after I had a good base on the extreme pose.
thanks for the comments- really appreciate it.

thanks Soja, you have gotten much better since your first post. I sketch every chance I get, and that's what it takes.
here's the line art for my latest self portrait. haven't gotten around to scanning the rendered version. (inspired by Carlos Haunte)

Two things, you got some great stuff you're not showing us here, and your school has their own forums?! Do you attend high school or a college?

I attend the Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver. I'm thinking about putting a sketchbook up here too. Thanks homie.

wow nice realism,
How long do you say you spend on an average piece? and how large are the Sps? Looks very time consuming but I am sure it gets faster with more practice.
Do you usually do a rough sketch and then transfer line art to the paper after you have proportions and such figured out ? or do you just jump right in?
Great work! love to see more,
~Carol

btw, do you smudge the shading with your fingers or a stompher or what? looks like it.. usaly looks kinda bad when people try that, including myself but you make it work.. my shading looks all grainy when I try to smudge it like that, guess it's about the paper aswell though..

imperess- thanks for the compliments. It depends on how warmed up I am, but I usually just start and finish a drawing in about 4-5 hrs. The longest part of the whole process for me is the under-drawing... the rendering is the easy part for me. I just sketch it out on the paper and render it after I scan in the line art.
JoeHell- I use tissue- kleenex. and stumps only for detail. the paper quality also helps a lot. i often just fill in an area on a scrap piece of paper really dark, and pick up the lead with the tissue, using the tissue as a drawing tool. much smoother and easier than trying to smudge the lines you've put down on your drawing. i also try to stick to circular motion when blending.

good stuff indeed but with the CG one the shadow underneath the nostril on the left side when looking at it upclose its giving me the feeling that the nose isn't overly connected to the face,

how long have you been drawing? i have one question... are all artists ADD?
Atlas
May 21st, 2006, 06:14 PM
I've basically been drawing all my life. I've been doing portraits like this since my freshman year of high school, basically. Most artists I know are ADD! But I've been doing these drawings in my spare time... I'm an animation student and I've been doing all cg in my classes. sorry no updates here, but i've just been sketching a lot- and doing other digital paint. thanks for the comments.

what is add my research tells me its like your thoughts often change... like someone is changing the shows on a television... or whatever... what do you think of it and do you think it is a good thing? people say art or artist are for the poor or are the poor. is this true? my friend says art is for people who have experienced more.. im caught up between this stuff.. thats why i havent drawn for years... when i was 8 yrs old i was drawing nude pictures but my sister said no... i guess thats the reason why i didnt draw anymore... but i still draw when no one is around... i need comments or perhaps professional help.. im not sure... but nice work atlas great work.. cheerio

wow..very nice..not my taste but very nice..your drawings have a lot of life...
yoshimitsu..if you are a true artist..money and what other people say does not matter..I had the same experience of not drawing for many years since I was a teeneger..(I just drew for fun, as a habit ...although i never considered myself an artist..now I have that label put on..but I am the same..the only difference is that I draw/paint everyday now..:)

k... didn't read everyone's comments... (skimmed the thread) so forgive any comments that may seem a little random...
really really ridiculously nice... as to detail on the PS piece, and I'm sure you would've done perfectly fine with it... perhaps more skin texture... other than that it was absolutely gorgeous and the lighting and colors are great.
love the graphite ones too. i wanna ask how long these took, but perhaps that's been answered and I shouldn't ask till I actually read all the stuff in the thread =)

Absolutely gorgeous work you have here.
I really hope one day I could gain as much skill as you have.
My absolute favourite is the third one you did. Those eyes draw me right in.
Just beautiful.
