monks of Jin-wan-hu resides at their hi-tech preety costly monestry,
spreading all over the west side of the "hungry rabbit" mountain.
money as their spritual enlightning force of nature(human nature that is..),
provides for every whim and possible need, courtsy of the beilivers (and non-beilivers)
, citizens of North Kuya, pun-ma.
"one must beilive in something.one might as well enjoy it." and
"why think? here`s a buck." are some of the Jin-Wan-Hu sacred mantras.
legend has it some of the monks have reached such a high level
of spirituality they were able to float in mid air.
the ones who could afford it, that is.

The Old Lady was never apprehend and there is the rumors she still lives high in the mountains

Carved over millenia from the living stone of one of the greatest peaks of the J'ronlan Rift, the mountain fastness of Rishilan is home to the Order of Mes, ascetics who undergo ten reclusive years of education and contemplation of Asa'Shari, the spirit world, before re-entering the Na'Shari, the mundane world, as teachers, artists, poets, musicians, and mentors.

Every year one hopeful is allowed to enter the Order as an acolyte, but only if he or she succeeds in the traditional Pilgrim's Task: Starting at sunset on the eve of the vernal equinox, following a week of fasting and meditation, the pilgrim begins to climb the Way of Ten Thousand Steps clad only in the crimson Robe of the Petitioner. If the Petitioner arrives at the Great Gate of Rishilan before the first rays of the rising sun strike the courtyard of the monastery, the Pilgrim is welcomed as a new member of the Order. Those who fail are given food, water and clothing, and must return to their former lives to await the next year's equinox.

this monastery is the home of a conteplative order of monks who gradually build their indurance as they work their way up to the pinnacle. There are exactly 1000 steps to the top.
Inspired by the diligence of Swallows and Mudwasps, these small cells cling directly to the cliff face.

Im afraid I call it the "Staiway to heaven" Monastery

The Khalin Monastery

During the age of Neo-reich empire, religions themselves were banned, but such worshipping, as worshipping war were extremely encouraged.

One of such war worshipping monastery's, was the monastery of Khalin. The monks of the monastery commit themselves to practising martial art skills and war tactics everyday. It is well known, that most secret and deadly martial art styles are practised by the Khalin monks.

While in exile commander Dhaa'r seeked out the Khalin monastery to pledge himself to war, vengeance and fighting. It was here, where the legend of Dhaa'r von Fahrenheit started.

"With the Order of the Plainclothes Salesmen dwindling Mt. Handshake Monastery is nowadays quite barren. This once bustling hub of backroom deals and spiritual enlightenment, with it's spectacular views, has begun to feel the financial pinch of unpopularity. The Order has come up with many ideas of how to make the monastery profitible again but is ironically having problems finding the financial backing."

Mt. Dugishi monastary, known for its lovely blue roofs and the monks by who's mental effort alone the floating islands stay aloft, is open for visitation on the astral plane at any time of day or night. On a physical level however, visitors have been known to disrupt the concentration of the monks, causing several casualties...

The mountain monastery, built by ancient travellers, still stands to this day because of constant renovation. Used as a significant ending to a pilgrimage for the followers of those who constructed it. Although the details on the race are relatively small, it has been disputed that the so called homosapians became extinct because of an unknown elemental power, that was released from the rocks near the monastery over 800 years ago.

Local paramilitary elements have converted indigenous temple ruins on Titan’s third moon into functional facilities, and are currently operating without senatorial dispensation- participating in skirmishes to the south as mercenary units. Several Union officials in the region have requested our intervention.

"The tiny sect of the mlkar were seldom seen in the lands surrounding mount karthos... They were too busy keeping the Flame at bay and the gods of the earth sated. It was only the strongest and most fleet of foot who were able to pass from the status of 'sacrifice' to that of initiate of the order. Most historians agree that judging by the sect's daunting rituals, those who died early were actually the lucky ones"

"Only the notion of tourism revenue could sack 5000 years of moral and spiritual tradition embodied in the hallowed mountain monasteries, which for much of their lives were seen only by the most virtuous of the triumphant souls who could transverse the great vertical scales to reach them."

The Shuuk Temple of the Miscottii Monks, Deep in the mountains of Jimenii. Not visible in this shot of the main structure, is the tower of Heaven. From this tower leads a stairway, that according to legend, ascends straight to the throne of God. None that have ever began a journey up the stairs have ever returned.

According to the old legend God and Devil met in a monastery called "Tower to heaven" to agree on what will they do with the world and the people.

So, is it in poor taste to vote for yourself?

I voted for Sketchling. While part of me would like to see a more expansive landscape there's no denying the atmosphere you've created sketchling. Good stuff.

Runners up for me were masque and goran.

Masque - There's alot of stuff that's really nice but the path is messing with me a little. It seems a little flat compared to everything else. Just my opinion.

Goran - I love your style and I can't think of anything to nitpick I just liked the overall feel of sketchling's entry more.

Great round! i voted for sketchling...Simple, but really effective, the lighting is great and the impression of movement with the snow is excellent. Close was sept13, was an interesting design...

I never really was a huge fan of matte paintings because I always felt there was a 'little' bit of cheating involved...
but fallen damage did a really nice job (man, you're improving greatly) and he did lots of painting anyway!
so, the vote goes to him this time.
Sketchling's was nice as usual, great lighting, love that snow!
Goran, masque, Sept13, yadam: cool stuff, too!

My vote went to Masque. I like the colors and the water falling, and just the whole scene in general.

Sept13, great rendering as usual, and FallenDamage that is a great Matte! Also like Gorans a lot, great idea but I would have made the ships and structures a bit bigger, I think the mountain sides (cliffs?) are too overpowering in the piece, but thats just my opinion. Other than that great idea!

Thank you to everyone who has congratulated me on the new baby. My wife and I couldnt be happier. Hopefully I can make use of the nights she'll be keeping me up, and get more painting done!

My vote's for fallendamage. I never really liked matte paintings but I liked this one enough to vote for it...
...also it seems less standard and more creative, not just another monastery...

Sketchling did do an excellent job. I think my next entry won't be a matte painting, as a lot of people seem to regard them as cheapness.

voted for sketchling.
all the others- though really nice- were, well... drawings/paintings/photo manipulations.
sketchling`s piece had an extra something;
a soul, a feel, an atmosphere.
you can actually feel the cold outside blizzard,
wishing you were indoors, within the warmth of the monestry.
only crit may be it could use a tad more detail.
still - a job well done.

voted for jonoy, interesting design and fresh illustrative rendering.

yes, sketchling atmosphere is really well done, but the monastery lacks a lot of design... imo .-just think of it "lightmaps" off

fallendamage: nice work. succesful matte painting is not as easy as many think, you did a good job. and i dont think its cheating at all, this is after all a conceptual piece.

I think my next entry won't be a matte painting, as a lot of people seem to regard them as cheapness.

No way man, your entry -fucking rocks-. I don't think its cheapness on any level, actually I'm going to go as far and say I think it can be more enriching and that I'd love to see more mattes.

www.mattepainting.org <-- there is nothing on this site I would call cheap, cheat, or simple/easy to do.

Great round.

noshe... hehe spot on. Didnt have time to design it more so i kinda made that not count so much with some sneaky atmosphere and snow :( Structure Design isnt my stong point unfortunatly.

Fallendamage: As a matte painting thats wicked, but I guess this is thread is more about concepts and illustrations so its a little out of place. Doesnt lessen the image though. I tend to try painterly stuff here for fun cause I have to do the tight matte stuff at work.

I do think though that mattes should be kept seperate really, as the issues one has to deal with are often quite different from a from-scratch painting. Maybe its just me being cynical, but I far prefer looking at an image thats all paintstrokes. Its far fresher.

(that said, ya did get my vote)

voted for sketchling - for the atmosphere, lighting. Figuring out the scale of the building wasn't immediate but admiring all the other elements I eventually got it.

masque - good concept
chuckmate - very graphic, nice though

ya got my vote, Chuck! You gave me the sense of being small as I looked up to the sheer face of this mountain monastery....lighting was rich, regal and airy. Other entries were well done, but I found yours to be captivating.
Runner up was Sketchling - just wish it had more of a mountain feel (couldn't tell if it was at the base or the top in the image) - but great mood, none-the-less!
Cheers!
