Inspirtion is all freakin' over me. Dude it's been like forever since you last post. Make it happen! It'd be great to see where you're at now and what you're drawing. Keep it up. I guess one of the big keys to drawing greatness is excessive copying of photos and stuff. LoL I'm gonna get at it. Thanks for the lift.

Lung-
Not that you haven't heard it already, and not that you lack encouragment, but great pages. You've got a great hand for drawing and a solid eye. Your intuitive sense for design and layout is great. And a good range of emotion as well. You seem to do whatever catches your fancy. A study of a car, a cartoon, a airforce helmet, anatomy studies... They're a delight to look at.
Thank you for posting.

Hehe, yes. Tell us how to sketch. ;)
I think what mr. Kovavs mentioned has been said too sparse: "Your intuitive sense for design and layout is great."
Totally agree. The layout of your sketchbook-pages rawks.
And yes, im feeling pretty dumb to reply to each of your posts but i just can't resist.

I saw your self portrait and in it you had red lines which you said was a blind contour. I'm not exactly sure what that is; is it drawing without looking at the paper?

quantas: yeh, i'm a bitch
josef, cocofuppa: thanks
steak-tron: i'd like to see your take on that helmet pic (it's a great pic to practice matierials). and i'm 17
the bear: draw draw draw :)
jnor, famboozled: thanks peeps
ruby: i actually made a big chocholate cake this saturday :D
hexal: lots of people draw from NGE i think. at least i remember seeing it in the 'good stuff to ref from' lists
zebzfree: "guess one of the big keys to drawing greatness is excessive copying of photos and stuff". if you can go outside and draw, do that. that's the shit
angela: i'll make a few progress shots this weekend, bit tight on time right now. thanks for the nice words
vance: ! had to rub my eyes :) thanks for checking out, and i'm glad you like it. most of the design and layout sense i owe to jeff jones (saw some of his pages and quotes when i was starting out, kinda grew on me). cheers
p.s. i owe a lot of my sketching knowledge to you and justin (sweet), so i'd like thank you for posting too :)
aidan: here's a quick tutorial:
1) provide yourself with a semi-large sheet of paper, white or brown, preferably unlined, and a pencil suiting your personal taste (i'd personally go with a mechanical pencil, if i do gestural, scribbly stuff, or a 7B, if i'm working out the values and big shapes)
2) find a subject of interest. any.
3) if you can, sit/stand/lie/levitate nearby and draw it
3b) if you can't, take a photo of it and draw from it. this is not as good because you won't improve your 3D to 2D conversion skills (that is, transferring the stuff you see to a 2D picture). try not just copying, but constructing when drawing from photos
4) spend as much time as you deem appropriate. some subjects will look stiff if too much time is spent on them, so try to find a nice balance. if you don't get the essence of the subject in the first 5-10, you should probably start over. and
don't get carried away when rendering!
5) scan the image and post in your daily sketchbook thread
6) back to 1) with received crits and comments in mind.
:)
daemonmagus: yeah, no looking

today's output; mostly bits of everything, but nothing serious
to start, some life drawing stuff
the truck here i did while standing so i had to be quick (that's an interesting way to keep the sketch rough and not overdone), and that's why the lines are so shakey. the lower half are details from the garbage truck (to be used in techy backgrounds and stuff)
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/truck.jpg
this one didn't turn out that good, but here goes
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/acryl02.jpg
(photo ref)
then i did some roughs for a short comic (yeh they are tiny)
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/cabroughs.gif
followed, in the loose spirit, by a weird helmet guy inspired by a pigeon head. if you stare at it for a while, it might be slightly visible. also messed with it in PS a bit. didn't finish
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/helmutguy_scan.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/helmutguy_tmp.jpg
then some anatomy stuff while chatting with a friend
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/anastuf.gif
did a sculpture while he was around too, but this digicam sucks so here's the best i could get outta it (it's not dry yet either)
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/sc01.jpg http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/sc04.jpg
and finally, a creature from my dream few nights back (did the pencils few days back too, color today)

dunno how the book idea came up, heh. in some ten years maybe. long road to go, friends
here's something i've been enjoying lately- dilluted ink. preparing for going out to sketch, painting plen air. too cold tho, so i'm exploring the qualities of ink and everything at home.
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/newink001.jpg
http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/newink002.jpg
also, one drawing from life. only had 20 minutes to do it, before it got way too cold to draw. muy fun tho.

my site should go online on 12th so i may post some of the stuff here too.

January 8th, 2004, 09:08 AM
those ink samples look great! ink is a medium i enjoy a lot too.
for the plein aire pieces, i think sepia ink might fit the subject even better as it builds up to a dark tone close to black but has a more warm and natural overall look.
Lung_bug
January 8th, 2004, 10:36 AM
i've been able to get only one kind of ink so far, but i'll try to get sepia. then again, there's always photoshop :) i was even thinking of trying to mix dilluted ink with tea. that's crazy enough to work
one more thing today, i was just drawing the view through my window, and when i finished, a gas cistern truck crashed right into that spot. so i drew that too, and i did a dilluted ink piece too, but didn't turn out that well. fantastic coincidence anyway, so i had to post

nice play between line and value, there. :)
would you mind telling me what tools you used for making those crisp lines? the tones look like normal wooden pencil, did you use it as well for the lines? or did you use a mech pencil? even an ink liner?

Really, Lung, wow. I don't post much, especially to offer but one positive remark amongst the multitudes.
Having said that, thank you. Your work is beyond inspiring. I've been struggling to develop my 2d skills(3d modeler by trade), and you have given me hope and inspiration beyond just about anything I've seen.
If it's possible, I was wondering if you had a few pointers.
Obviously, the secret to becoming decent at any art form is to simply do it all the time. That much, I get. But certainly, each of us as stumbled at some point in our development.
Having attained a degree of skill that many see as getting close to mastery, do you have any comments on what to avoid? What were your pitfalls(if any) along your journey so far?
Again, thanks a ton for sharing. Your work makes me take my fingers off my mouse and onto a pencil. :D

gekitsu: no, unfortunately i'm unable to go to the amsterdam workshop, or any other one until i'm in college
3dzealot: many people see my work as very inspiring, and i'm really glad because of that, but i personally don't think much of it. it's but a start, and i'm just trying get the max out of myself. some people told me that i always just crit people's stuff, and that's true, but i always do that to my stuff, to a much higher degree. and that might be the key to my progress, reevaluating it always and always, being nitpicky, being harsh. i consider myself a lazy person, actually, as i could be doing much more than i am right now.
concerning things to avoid, i'd go with these
1. struggling with the tools
tools should always work for you, not against you. imagine trying to write a novel without knowing how to write. you'd have a pretty good idea, but it'd be a struggle to do. know what your tools can and can't do. the better you are with the tools, the more attention you can give to the subject of the artistic interest.
2. getting caught up in a routine
drawing one subject over and over, until you begin to do it mechanically, even though it looks good. trying to draw something else usually results in frustration, because it's not on the same skill level. one of my goals is learning as much about all kinds of subjects. mr. coro here is a great example. art is all about experimenting and always trying new things.
3. ignoring the constant "DRAW FROM LIFE" comments
these are practically in every thread here, and from what i see, a lot of people started to consider it a phrase. it might seem that drawing from a photo is the same, but it's NOT. try and you'll see
that'd be the biggest three crits, i think. i'm writing these in school so i can't really get a good overview of what i wrote. one of the important things that a lot of people don't see is that art is a lifestyle, not just something you do from 2 to 5. whenever i go out, i become a sponge, trying to soak up as many things i can fit in my head. what kinds of objects are there, how do they look, how do they react to the general lighting, how do people dress... all these things are very useful in your drawing career, and every wake moment (and even dreams) can be used as a step to get you higher.
here's my four drawing "rules":
1. HAVE FUN
THE. MOST. IMPORTANT. THING. everything is useless without this. if you don't enjoy it, don't do it. be an economist instead.
2. BE REALISTIC
set realistic goals and go one small step at a time. don't aim too high, and don't try too much at once. that's why a lot of people end up being frustrated. small steps. it's easier and more consistent. they didn't make you learn the whole book in one week, back in school.
3. BE PERSISTENT
keep trying. things maybe won't come easily. some people need more time, some less, but they can both achieve big things. be real about this too
4. BE CRITICAL
always be very critical of your work. always try your best. don't leave the piece if you are aware of the errors. it's just shoving your head in sand. learn from your errors, as well from other people's.
the class is about the end so i have to skedaddle
it's just ranting, but i hope it helps someone

great advice lung........its very obvious that you are critical of your work, because you have gotten much better since you started here at CA. as many people have said before, you are an inspiration.......you are the reason that i draw as much as i do, because i have seen the progress someone has made by being dedicated to what they do, and now that progress is what i am trying to achieve. oh yeah, and great artwork :)

lung, your thread (and skills) continues to whip ass. Your mentaility is right on too, im trying to break from life refs too. hey Lung, I really like your stuff. It is extremely inspiring, it is phenominal the amount of work you do. I had a question; how do you, or do you keep a balance between the amount of work you do and the amount of inspirations you find maybe from books or from travelling or from friends and family. I don't know if this make sense but the more I read the more I know how people think, the more people I meet and try to make friends with them, the more I know how that person thinks and why a person acts a way he or she does, and so I can relate this to your drawings and give opinios about them. Do you think that reading a book or travelling is as important as drawing everyday?

helltaxi: "broad range of things you study" <- that's something i often whip myself about. well, recently i'm doing very diverse stuff (and enjoying it!) but no scanner to show right now :/
abyss: "bit unfinished and too simple". well, back when i was just starting out i was obsessed with craig mullins' stuff (goodbrush.com) and how his pics were really unfinished but looked really good. all a matter of knowing when to stop. ashley wood also does that thing all the time.

angela: :chug:
yiako: working on it right at this moment! writing this in a break between pages. will get it here when i get the scanner back
steak-tron: heh, kid drawings are fun indeed. if i dig mine up i'll post some too. that drawing there is slightly disturbing tho... i see an r2d2 with hairy balls... might be the giger book i'm reading tho  :D
gallenO: thankie :)
wilsonjr: doing comic pencils isn't really appealing for me. i have some plans concerning comics but it's mostly in a european underground author-comics kinda way. can't picture myself drawing page upon page of superhero comics. no fun.
painting in traditional media is something i'm working on, shyly. did a few still lifes in monochrome acrylics (man did those suck). i'll try and get a decent one up here. say hi to brazil :)
van: "I find your attitude the most inspiring"... hearing that makes me a happy little lung :chug:
iseedeadpeople: you're making a connection between artistic growth and growth as a person, if i understood well. very good question. imho those two are very related (at least in my case). by growing as a person, i become a better artist, and by growing as an artist, i can become a better person... dunno. reading and travelling is definitely important. one of my dearest dreams is to going around europe for a year with nothing but a sketchbook and a big fat smile on me
Karim: :)
Fifthace: i have a style?
troymcoy: more robots! trying to stay away from them atm, but it's hard :) did some studies for them the other day ;)
van: yeh, i know i should post more often :/
spacepope: and you got one funny nick
dingoegret: thanks!
fruity poo slayer: valid opinion. not very helpful though... what don't you like?
injection223: thanks :chug:
cocofuppa: i'll try to get some acrylics here soon. monochrome, though, because them paints are $$$
johanson: glad you like it, andrew
dingoegret: i don't own a blender, and mostly i work without smudging at all. sometimes i'll go in with a finger or a paper napkin, but that's not very often. pencils vary: it's mostly mechanical pencil, hb leads; sometimes i work with regular pencils, 2b, 4b and 7b (rarely)
obid619: whoever he was, he's banned now for trolling the daily sketchbooks (plain sad)

Mann, your really talented you just got born with the talent to create these magnificent creations. I was just wondering something, I Just read that you would not see yourself creating comics and such, which is kinda understandable, but since you draw that great, what do you see yourself do in some time in what industrie would you love to work, I would really dig to know that :D And that trip around the world with just you and your sketchbook and a smile on your face is something that must be truely great Ive been trying to save up for that myself but dang its so expensive, but im almost there :D And another rather difficult question, I always knew that if I would draw better I would feel better, and if I would feel better I would draw better, just like you said, BUT what if neither of them work for me, I dont feel better because my drawing is not getting better, and waht if I dont draw better because no matter what I still dont feel better. Lol ah bit hard to the eyes, but thanks for the inspirational work AGAIN :D
Cheers !
P.S. If you have the time and feel like it, would you perhaps hold an Open Canvas session with me I would really dig it to see how you draw and stuff, it would really help me learn drawing on itself, no im not gay ;) just eager to learn lol, well hear ya later :D

jamaludin: i would mostly like to get in the vast area of illustration, book covers and stuff. didn't say i wouldn't do comics at all, but just for myself. dunno, i find it hard to narrow down what i want to do, it's kinda easier to say what i don't see myself doing, at least for some time- matte painting and animation. fine art too, or any kind of 3d work. and about that draw better/feel better thing, it's ALWAYS possible to get better, just need to find a proper way. don't get caught up in a routine. draw from life, draw various things, don't expect spectacular stuff at first. small steps, you know? we can oc in a few months, right now i can't spend much time online due to poverty and stuff
nofish: stopped drawing? NEVER! just been soaking in movies, books, comics, getting inspired and learning new things
xia, yiako: :)
-------
for the past month or so i've been soaking in inspiring stuff, from comics and books to movies (mostly zombie stuff :) ), and it's been awesome to break up for a while. did a lot writing, a lot of projects now waiting to be drawn, can't wait to take on them. as i said, been reading a lot, especially mike mignola's hellboy. as i've started working with crow quills and ink, it's been a great source of inspiration, which is yet to be reflected in my work. i started inking that short comic i mentioned before, here's a bit of it (nothing jawdropping, but i'm happy with it being my first attempt at inking with a crow quill)

and yeah, i like it, too. like all the other stuff. some of it really makes me have a "deeper insight" on how to tackle certain subjects. give us more lung...please ;)
oh and by the way...when doing studies (from photos for example) how important is it for you to be exact? i mean, are you only satisfied if your drawing is just like the photo or do you go about it by saying "well, as long as i've got the basic structure and the picture as a whole looks okay, that's enough"?

Abyss, I think is just a first page. What I mean is that the storytelling (the narrative: use of angles, spaces... the flow of actions) is really good for my taste.
Now Lung, you just have to finish this comic and show it to us!

metaphysiks: yeh it's a new feeling, it's kinda strange to learn how to use the medium from scratch, but it's definitely awesome. i could just scribble with a crow quill all day long. the feeling's awesome. plus you get a real nice variety of lines outta it. must try it
syrogen: kind of
crash: :evilbat:
davi: :p
troymccoy: um... no.
winjer: my GPA is around 4.0... :D
avetice: thanks, zombies are always fun
jackalanubis: they got used to me drawing i guess
king, the bear: :)
yiako: yeh, i had just been reading hellboy for two days straight so it was hard to not be influenced. but as always, at first i rape it completely and later on it gets mixed with my other influences and my quirks so it becomes a part of my own 'style'. good at storytelling as much as drawing? i'd be very happy if that's so. we'll see when i get this done. cheers
cocofuppa: dead on. :chug: i'd really appreciate more bitching and tearing apart. what'd you like to see more, what don't you like, write it all. only way i could learn. more constructive feedback = more posts of mine...
georgem: helps? sorry about t-dome, it was a messy situation
golgari: exactly! you should try and write some of your own too. photo studies are always a tricky subject, and imho it depends on what you're trying to learn from it. if you want to go for 'photorealism', then you'll be after nailing it exactly. in most cases, it's better to not to be a slave to the photo. get it close, but don't be too anal about it. if you're studying, let's say, proportions, then you have to be really careful to get the proportions, and don't have to go nuts on lighting and other things. i always learn one or two things from studies, because if i try to work on everything at once (anatomy, lighting, clothing, composition, etc.), i get too baffled and end up with a half-assed sketch, so i just focus on composition or colors (or any other specific thing) instead.
jeff jaws: yeh, those were most fun to do :)
abyss: it's 3/4 of the first page, without text, and the whole story runs for about 7-8 pages.
yiako: glad you like it, and working on it (somewhere half way through now)
yina: ref/inspiration... that's a long one to answer :) a lot of things, from puddnhead and wes here to comic artists like mignola, biukovic, zezelj, many other artists on the internet. music and books also provide a great source of inspiration... *shrug* i'll have to put a big list on my site i guess :)
abyss: mignola is one of the recently found inspirations, and i wouldn't say his stuff has that much influence on me. sure, the comic looks seem influenced solely by him, but there's at least as much of Zezelj in there, if not more. it's just that he's less known than mignola. you might now of him though :) (if not... :bash: )
i'll post some art soon, just wanted to reply... as cocofuppa said, more constructive criticism would help, have no mercy
cheers
keep drawing

dude!zezelj is a genious!i loooove him!
ever seen ilics stuff?yiako did.i can never degree their popularity but yiako has "the other side" so ...i guess you shold know bout them to.(ilic + kordej).
not so bad as well.not near as good as zezelj tho.
about the constructive comments.i have none really.but im gonna pass on a suggestion i got some time ago;
try ignoring pencil totally for some time.a marker too (those with that sharp points).see how much you can last like that.
use anything but those.i lasted for 2 months.enoug.slavery i tell ya (at least for me) but my skills improved in other podrucjima :)

zezelj does kick ass and he is a great influence (especially when it comes to cityscapes and near-abstract storytelling). more people should know his work, but his work for dark horse and dc isn't nearly as good as his solo stuff... ilic's stuff i'm not so familiar with, seen just a few frames and some stuff in that documentary on hrt few months back. kordej, on the other hand, i'm much more familiar with, because his algoritam covers have been one of the things that made me do this :) and his comics are quite nice too, but i've read only that mugambi story in Q, and a bit of rivers of blood. didn't read the old kvadrat stuff.
that suggestion sounds interesting, but what am i supposed to work with, then? acrylics? i don't have much soft & muddy materials. brushes? though, you can make sharp stuff with them too...

its up to you and you only.improvise.
its called creativity.most people here seem to forget that little thing since theyre all tryin to learn sth, mostly from patterns,
those million different how to guides.
good.fine.not always so interesting.it shouldnt be working and learning all the time, it should be also having fun!
and since you and all the rules (as far as shadowing, anatomy, clear lines, perspective -those stuff go)
seem to get along so well already now,
no harm can come from joking around a bit.
so use brushes, ok.go with something more alternative later on.leave the pencil to us, havenoideajets to maddle with!
pretty please.
i dont think im the only one ancious to see your stuff a bit weirdly done.

abyss: i see your point. however, i don't agree completely. you are implying that pencil is for beginners and lineart is patterned behaviour, and that can't be true. people have fun doing it the old way, too. it's a question of form. because of the nature of this forum, a lot of people strive to lineart, pencils, whatever that is efficient to bring their idea through. and it's hard through collage, drawing with a ragged cloth or wire installations. right now i was going to do a city scene inspired by the beginning of this novel i'm reading, perdido street station, and the idea was to show complexity and broodiness of the environment. now, if i was to do it in any other media than lineart, it'd be just cumbersome. not saying it wouldn't be succesful. just saying it wouldn't work as good. i agree with the 'break up the routine' thing. it's always good to experiment. there is creativity in the old, by-the-book stuff too. dunno if you follow the events on the croatian comic scene, with komikaze and e-flit? the avantgarde people? i read most of them and i got quite bored of it, because in their striving for new methods, their ideas got boring, uninteresting. on the other hand you had eddy making history with his grendels, and they were not only classical, but done for american, commercial market! that's why i'm a bit biased when it comes to that stuff. there's nothing wrong with the old stuff, don't discard the pencil. that attitude always reminds me of modern art elitists.
murkydreams: i haven't read many books on art, loomis' online stuff is pretty much all i've read, along with burne hogarth's dynamic anatomy. recently i downloaded scott mccloud's book on sequential art (this is theory, but still valuable if you want to venture into the comics area). all these books are nice, but the hogarth one isn't really good to start with (more at an intermediate-pro level), so i'd go with loomis for starters. i hear bridgeman books are quite good, but i haven't seen them yet, so i can't really tell
renzsu: thanks :)

i think regular pencils and staedtler sharp point markers are the greatest ever in the history of man kind!i wasnt tryin to imply those were tools for begginers, just that at a point of development you seem to have reached a new ability to experiment pops out as an option.
about the having fun part..maybe i see it a bit differently, i dont know.never mind.
edvin biukovic + darko macan!ive read something (quite a time ago tho)
liked it enough to remember their names.

dunno if youve ever tried charcoal, but itll definitely help you loosen up.. . its a fun medium to pick up and play around with, but you can also get really detailed and realistic pieces out of it. recommend the vine charcoal, then the compressed charcoal for more dark areas. great work as usual

Lung - your comments regarding line art and nuMedia and modern art elitists hit home with me - I agree completely. I don't claim to be an art expert, but I've got college training and I've used plenty of different types of media. Each one suits a specific purpose, and the choice of media is almost always important to the subject matter. I find line art and other pencil work to be VERY contusive to a lot of different subject matter, and it's brilliantly accessible. There are plenty of ways to "push" the work and try new things even within the bounds of line art without having to go to some wild new media. I find a lot of "nuMedia" work is, as you described it, boring WRT ideas because it's more about making art out of shoelaces and mayonnaise and plastic resin and less about conveying a compelling image and idea.
perdido street station is a phenomenal book, and I'd love to see your work in progress and final work, whether it's on this forum or just through private emails. That book moved me in so many ways, and is extremely visual and visceral. It is one of the things that shook me out of my corporate-induced ennui and made me feel compelled to get back to my artist roots. I couldn't read it and NOT want to draw. Please please please share your thoughts and work on it, I couldn't be more pleased to know you're reading that book and working on such a piece.
your thread has been very inspirational to me, and has taught me the rich rewards of hard work and that the one rule is to DRAW DRAW DRAW! I appreciate that, because it's really what I needed to do and it's helping me a lot. I'm working on a piece based on a scene from a book, as well - from a short story by M. John Harrison, one of China Mieville’s compatriots. You should check his stuff out if you like Perdido Street Station. Harrison paints with words, as well, and has stripped horror and magic down to their essential oils....it's like real life, but the f'd up factor is tweaked up a notch or two. His short stories don't give you answers, they give you questions. brilliant stuff.
Thanks for your thread, I really enjoy it. Please show some progress work and (if you're willing) I'd love to discuss how you've planned/conceptualized the New Crozubon cityscape. Planning is one of my weak areas in that I almost always either over-plan or under-plan and I rarely get it quite right. :)
Rock on,

abyss: that was grendel (devils and deaths) :). experimenting i agree with, always. and i try to, just don't post much of it here for various reasons (mostly not happy with the results), but i'm slowly starting to add more ink and acrylics stuff. a lot of stuff going on in my head concerning mostly the visual vocabulary; trying to learn to draw things like urban landscapes, clothing, etc. and it'd be cumbersome to go apeshit on the mediums while i'm learning, hence the pencil being the most common choice.
kinokuniya: too kind :) have fun with the sketchbook. draw something in it every day!
metalwinds: i had a pack of vine charcoal floating around but i gave it to my gf about a month ago... need to get some more. thanks for the suggestion, i'll definitely give it a shot
maldrin: whenever i hear mayonnaise related to art, i always remember Beuys :), but yeh, that last line really nailed it. about perdido street station, it sure is a great book, but also a book with a lot of new words for me, so i'm going through it slowly (around page 50 now). i will definitely draw some of the stuff from it and post it here, or on my site. didn't hear about Harrison, but i'll try and get some of his stuff in e-book format and check it out. did you read the Difference Engine, by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson? that's a kickass book too (steampunk bible). thanks for the kind words and cheers

http://lungbug.ice.org/stuff/study_mar18_baby.jpg

first two (three) are just studies from photos in 4B and HB pencil, respectively. the contrast was punched up in photoshop. did them just to get back to the pencil feeling, and i happened to run into llewellyn's thread yesterday (that's always fatal). been working in ink so much that i forgot how it was to do something remotely finished with pencils. the last one is a selfportrait in acrylics, a rather unsuccesful one (but fun anyways), as it winded up acrylics controlling me, instead of vice versa, and i had to do minor corrections in photoshop (forehead proportions... note: never draw/paint at a funny angle to the paper). also a small tribute to wes :chug:
anyways, off to bed before my head pops

Finally. It`s good to se some high contrast drawings from you - even if they are altered in Photoshop. It gives this "dramatic" feeling. (This is also a strong contrast to the previous drawings you have shown us). Love it!
I like the portrait. One thing that I have noticed in your drawings, is that you never add too much details to the eyes. I have struggeled with that; when the eyes finally are done, it`s hard to balance out the rest. (hope that makes sense...)
Anyway, I love them. Can`t wait to see more.

good work as usual. i think the main problem with the sp is that it really flattens out in areas... .under your left eye.. .part of the chin. .. which brings down the image as a whole. some parts of it are working really well though. ..the lips.. areas in the forehead.. . but all in all it looks pretty good. i think your left eye is too far to the right.. . maybe. either way, you should post more.. . that would be cool.

Hey Lung, I'm in America and Perdido Street Station taught -me- quite a few words. It's got a great vocabulary! I'm glad you're enjoying it and I look forward to seeing your drawings. I'll PM you a link to one of Harrison's short stories once I find the link again...it's got great imagery and also a great "sound" to it.
The Difference Engine is a great book! I've been a fan of Gibson's work since Neuromancer and Sterlings since Islands in the Net. Both are excellent, but neither are steampunk. Difference Engine has wonderful concepts and yes, it is DEFINITELY the Steampunk Bible.
Your new sketches and self portrait are really good! I've tried to work in acrylics, and it is hard to get the right rhythm. I found it easiest to lay down some flat colors and then glaze it with contrasting colors to push down the areas I wanted to be shaded. For quick work with a single layer, I would thin the paint slightly with acrylic medium and just a tad of water, it kept it wet for longer. Also for my palette I'd use wax paper over several moist paper towels - the moisture would seep up through the paper into the paint to keep it from drying quite as fast. Don't know if any of those tricks will help, but figured I'd throw that out there.
Thanks for sharing!

Just as you have been studing members of this board's work, so I have been studing yours.
I have read through most all of your posts, and something has peaked my interest.
You write many notes on your sketches, some seem out of boardom, but alot of them are almost like notes one would take in a class. What are the source of these notes? Your own personal observations? I guess it's kinda interesting because from what I can make out(due to compression loss), they have been very informative little tips.
I guess maybe it's sort of like a bit of a diary for you too.

metalwinds: dead on. that sp was a salvage job from start. looked real ugly, somehow managed to fix it to a reasonable measure. it got real thick though :) thanks!
abyss: cheers mate
endregan: damn fast indeed. i pulled a lot of weird stuff though, as i have no idea how to work with them. so i had parts where i worked with two brushes at the same time, on parts i smeared the paint with my fingers or brushes or cloth, dry brushing on some areas, etc. it's really fun exploring it. you say my photo ref look almost from life, but i hope my stuff from life will look as good as the photo ref stuff :D. if i get into college (fingers crossed) we'll see... that's my only chance of life figure drawing in the future (if you don't count girlfriends and annoying relatives).

I'm 15, I love these boards, and I've read almost 4/5 of your spectacular thread here. I hope I can get as good as you in two years. How much formal training in art have you had and how often do you sketch? I heard about your twelve hour adventure a couple posts back, and I think I'll try to beat that right after I finish this post.
Second, how do you sketch?
Third, what books do you recommend? I have Bridgeman and I've downloaded Loomis, and I'm looking into buying Hogarth because a lot of people seem to learn from his exaggerated anatomy.

My vote is a few pics every day or two. I'm impatient. Plus, I savor each post much more when there are only a few pics. A dozen pics at once, I'd overdose on it and not be able to focus on one thing and really enjoy it. Lastly, for decent crits and comments, a few at a time is probably better. Too many pics at once and it'll be general comments like "damn, that's some nice art." instead of "what I really like about that piece or this piece is the way you drew that foot so damn perfectly or how nicely shaded the metal areas are or how you used negative space." If you get my drift.

I am by no means an acrylic expert (or an expert at anything, really) but I can say that I make my color choices early, because the time to sit and ponder just isn't there when painting with acrylics. it's also important probably not to plan TOO much. Damned if you do, etc.
Mixing some values ahead of time is probably a good idea, especially when you're first starting, so that you don't have to worry so much about timing. Just like with pencil-work, eventually you won't need to do that and/or you'll find better ways to do it that suit you better as you grow better with the medium. I look forward to seeing your future work. If I can fit my one acrylic piece I'm somewhat happy with on the scanner, I'll PM you an image. so you can see my simple glazing effort.
Also, while I don't usually go to FARP (Fantasy Art Resource Project) and I'm not even sure what an "Elfwood" is (sounds dirty, tho ;) ), when I googled for acrylic painting and portraits, I found this link that might have some good info on it. It's a simple overview, but it's cheaper than buying a book that would likely have most of the same info in it.

Later! ;)

metalwinds: thanks. concerning digital coloring, not much to say about it... how good are you with grayscale stuff? if you're not good with that, better leave the color aside for a bit and work on values. color introduces a whole different set of problems to work on. good stuff to read upon are manley's color theory notes (do a search for the thread, i think he posted it here too), lemen's stuff is invaluable too (lemen= fredflickstone), prometheus' post is quite nice too. someone once suggested doing thumbnail color studies from movies and such to develop a feel for the colors (recognizing them), and that's also a nice idea (which i should be doing much more myself). there were pages in one of the loomis books about colors. dunno. look at stuff from the artists you like and try to figure out how they did it. the best bit of advice i got about it all was "think before you paint". take your time with it, and keep at it. reference studies of the human figure sounds like a good way to do it, just don't forget the vast variety of subjects out there... landscapes, animals, giant killer robots...
spok: 16? yeh that'd be nice :) i'm turning 18 on april 13. damn i think i just found a grey hair!

hey, just wanted to state i'm still alive and kicking and will be posting new stuff as soon as i can find time. right now it's kinda tight, too many things happening!
/chronological (for the most part) replies
bryan: yeah i have them somewhere, i think. might have lost them in the hd crash, but i know i printed them once. will look into that. the sijun ones weren't that tough to compile
diego: the plan was that i study design in the capitol city here. no money to go to a foreign college, so figured i could work freelance through college, learn that way too...
amadorl: figured it out yet? sure, i can do one, as soon as i get some time to breathe
abyss: :)
xia: yes! 13 so rocks! :chug:
hexal: i'd aim at being better than myself, personally. no, wait, i'm already doing that :)
spok: actually i changed it to 86 when you weren't looking BWAHAHAHAH. ;)
murkydreams: aw, now that's too kind... hope you'll think the same way in a few years when you realize i was just a hack that poorly copied some other people heh :chug:
insane visions: that sounds fun, we should do it sometime
xia: :)
amadorl: yeah that would be amazing indeed!
dakoscwash, nor, endregan, obid, jamaludin, karim, angela- thank you :D i feel so loved
maldrin: yeah my gf is the greatest. though i brainwash her with my art talk... she already knows about foster, puddn, wes, manley, android and other peeps. she's also browsin the forum and likes the daily sketcbooks... cato and yiako- she likes your stuff :)
bojee: quoted me? heh. what did you quote?
blindthief: yeah, no wonder there, i'd say. loomis is my yoda
gaboartpage: a bit over a year now! still hard to believe for me. and i'm constantly blown away by the acceptance of chazzwazzers. i'm glad my own work can push someone to pick up the pencil and start drawing, and that always warms my little black heart. thank you for the kind words
shamanswhisper: much older? 20? :) age means little, you know? and yeah, pain of salvation kick ass... unfortunately i associated them to my ex, so it's kinda painful to listen to them now. painful but still beautiful
obid619: :(
the bear: :)
steak-tron: hey, thanks about the site comment. it's still very unfinished (not hard to notice hahah), but i have high hopes for it. NMH is something i recently discovered through a book from a croatian author. didn't listen to 'over avery island' yet, though- i downloaded 'in the aeroplane over the sea' and it still blows me away every time i play it. thanks, man :chug:
the bear: ...just need to get something on it, eh? :)
calle_: good shading with mechanical pencils? that's easy. mecha pencil leads are cylindrical. that means, they have sharp edges when you put them in, and with such sharp edges, it's impossible to do a constistently shaded area. therefore you need to take a separate piece of paper and just doodle randomly on it to wear out those edges. after a while it leaves a rough, smooth mark, and then it's easy to shade with it. you still have to be very careful and light on the arm though. it all comes with practice. getting to know the tools. and it's not about the paper, because most of my sketchbooks are from the worst imaginable paper (i'm using those non-lined notebooks kids use for geometry in school; each costs around 0.25$). use what you got the best way you can.
-
to post some art for the sake of it, here's a few pics i did a few weeks back (pencil/pilot g1/copic markers #2 and #8)-

April 25th, 2004, 08:11 PM
Oh ok, thanks dude. conuterQ :P what sizes do you use, and are there any particular leads?. =)
I dont think your paper is worse then mine, the one i use is kinda fiber paper that gets torn when you draw on it, especially with Mech pens. therefor you cannot erase without haveing a chaos in that spot + it never gets smooth. its like the god damn rocky mountians >< and it costs like $5 for 50 pages of pure A4 crap!! (sucks to ink on to >_<)
So there is my story =)
Good luck, and hope to see more of your work soon!!
Calle.

great stuff, some of the space vehicle sketches look a lot like the stuff I've seen at work done by people waiting for real aircraft models to load, especially number five, looks like the proposed supersonic passenger transport by boeing.
your site looks crisp, and that is a lot of thumbs to have on one page,a good touch in my opion I'm too impatient to wait for other pages to load, I want to see the pictures now.

jeff gran: that's the spirit
calle: bitching about materials is flossing a dead horse- if you can't do anything about it, get the best you can out of it. not much use in complaining about it. regular photocopy paper is available everywhere and you can do pencils and inks on it
young paddy1: thanks. yeh the site, need to get back on that. tight on time
rimshot: no, i don't use any perspective tricks (even though i should); i just wing it. if i'm working on something more detailed and finished i'll go anal about it, but these were just thumbs, so it was straight off
