View Full Version : Chow #011 VOTING: THOG THE MASTADON SLAYER

Thog the Mastadon Slayer
Thog the Mastadon Slayer is the hero of the tribe, heart throb of the ladies, built like a saber toothed tiger (and as friskey as one!), completely fearless (except for giant spiders, those just freak him out something serious), and none too bright.
Dim he may be, but underneath that cromagnon cranium, a stone wheel tirelessly turns with a single purpose: bring home the Mastadon meat, with a supersized side of Giant Ground Sloth.
Thog is not to be found anywhere without his *Club of Klunking*, provided by Thag & Sons, and sporting his spotted Stag Moose Cape and Loin Cloth (part of the Peccaries ensamble) on those cold and lonely nights during the Mastadon hunts.
Totally Styling and absolutely stoopid, Thog the Mastodon Slayer is a true hero of the Pleistocene era!

Okay, great round everyone.
As noted in the posting thread, I am going to be leaving very early for California tomorrow morning. So if I've goofed something, I will try to catch it tonight before I crash. Just pm as per usual. If I miss something, I apologize and will get to it in a couple of days.
In the mean time, have a great one.

Yep...I have a few in mind but I'll let it sit a couple days before I vote. I think everyone had fun with this one. So many great ideas.

Nice job to everyone.
I was thinking hard on which one to vote for. Chuck, mate´s frazetta-esque piece came close but my vote finally went to artdwx.

i had to put Jska's Thog and artdwx's Thog in Stonehenge Arena and let 'em whack each other about a bit before voting... both were mighty combatants, but Jska's Thog was the victor, for having a shade more focus on the character and gutsy, almost over-the-top hues & saturation that work well anyway.
i'd love to see more of your gouache, Jska! those calligraphic brushstrokes are something digital brushes just can't do right (in my experience, at least). btw, i don't think the digital BG was needed, it almost detracts a bit.

Red_Mimic. For the adorable rock-mammoth and the great movement in the piece. Also, his Thog looks dumber than any other Thog here.
I'd just like to know: what did you use for the drawing?

Romance gets my vote, perfect balance of humor and skill.

Thanks AmishCommy, for the vote.
Or is it just a vote to make sure nobody leaves
this poll empty-handed? :-)

So much nice stuff but I was stuck between Chuck's and Jelters. Chuck's Thog looks like he talks to his club so I'll go with his.
Zergaloth: I used a 2h, a 2B pencil and some 5 dollar watercolour cake set I found that came from Russia. It was done on some weird paper from a sketchbook that isn't labeled in anyway. Looks like it's recycled or earthbound or something, it was free. Thanks for the vote.

artdwx.
though the colors are much too bright and all on the same tone and contrast level, and therefore
lacking a sense of depth - his Thog and creatures around him are just beautifuly drawn and full of CHARACTER, which is something some of the people here just forget to draw when they design their CHARACTERS.
well done.

Voted for romance.
Great execution, I love the facial expression, totally focused, totally braindead. And the hair... for some reason I love the hair... nothing like a caveman with a good part.

Artdwx got my vote. All of his characters have style and humor, and the watercolor fits that mood - light, and cheerful. I really dig the sloth in the background. I kinda want a big sloth toy that looks like that heh.
A few others caught my attention too-
Chuck, mate - again an excellent piece from you... if I had gone for a more "serious" vote, yours would have been it. I love the colors and the pose.
Masque - I really like this piece too. This would have to be my second runner up in the "humorous" Thogs... The anatomy is great and the little bump on the mastadon's head is a nice detail :) And also, thanks for the vote!
JakkaS - Visually stunning and I love the contrast with the black and white. The subtle backlighting on his right arm is excellent.
Red Mimic - I love the rock gag. This Thog was definitely portrayed as the dumbest! Nice simplistic feel to it - love the midtone/neutrally colored paper.
Dhehuti - Nice warm pallete and good character! He really does look like the heart throb of the tribe. :)
That's about it for now... I may comment on more later. I'm home sick with the flu and it sucks. Good a time as any to get started on next week's I suppose ;P

red mimic. thats awesome, funny idea. good stuff i had a good laugh
I really enjoyed rawwad and fes rendering of their characters.
cognition, good atmosphere.
artdwx, good composition. nice line sensitivity.
jska- nice gouache, glad someone else went traditional :D.
darth - nice water. throw some red and maybe some cools to push that BG to the BG. that grass is really green and ill tell you its not greener on the other side. other than that really clean. Im telling you that dead center thog is kinda hurting your composition!!
everyone else, really good work i enjoyed this one. I know next time im going to focus more on the character and less on the environment.

Dave, (artdwx) you got my vote here. Great character you've whipped up, although the perspective on his feet kinda bug me. :) Still, this is a great piece and you oughtta add this one to the 'folio!

Thanks to everyone that voted for me and all the comments. In the end I voted for red mimic I really dug the concept focusing more of the lack of smarts than the lady's man look. Plus he kinda reminds me of the old hanna barbeara character I forget his name but he was a caveman with a cape and club.. anyways great round to everyone.
