hi guys
well this is my first post in this forum, but I've been following your work for quite a while. so I thought, why not intoduce myself with a suggestion. maybe you like it :P

it's like a bit more "actual" than all those scifi-fantasy things ;)

Anarchy in Paris, after several weeks of near-civil-war condition in the capital of France, the police-forces finaly had to retreat. Now the president has announced that "military-troops will reenforce the police of Paris to regain controle over the devastated city" and reinstall law and order.

I thought with your skills this should look all fantastic:yayca: ;)

A Bridge City sounds good, but how about a village in forest, a tree village? I mean like houses high on the trees and so on, after all it's your own choise. I have seen those first time when I was a child and I played a game named Donkey Kong Country, I thought those villages were cool and I have always wanted to paint or draw a picture of village like that.

How abooout...

A dark place, built with ancient bricks and tiles. It was once a good city, until the forces of evil were banished there, and constructed their own devilish variations on the bricks. The only source of light and warmth is from the shrouded sun and ancient subterannean furnaces.

Or, to put it more simply: an ancient, evil city in ruins but is still inhabited by the damned

Waho hey, I played that game on my Super Nintendo back in the day... in 1996 I think... oh man, time goes by. Tree village sounds good - but maybe we should make it more general so more people will be into it. "A LOFTY CITY", howabout that!

The Pirate Moonbase. In the future, interstellar war has distracted space military enough to allow piracy to thrive along the long and dangerous trade route between stars. All the merchants can do is arm up and cross their fingers. The pirates, meanwhile, are living large: they even have their own base on a distant moon, full of all those wonderful things that make reckless lawbreaking pirates into reckless lawbreaking pirates.

The City in the Shallows. The sea people of the western shores build their cities in the shallows, on the edges of the continental shelf. This gives them plenty of space to build their water-filled streets and homes and towers below water, and the opportunity to build above water as well, for the many air-breathing emigrants to the great city.

The Alien Graveyard. It was really quite spectacular and unexpected. Suffice to say, these aliens did not bury their dead beneath the ground.

The Happy Town. It was an ideal place -they made sure of that. It always had beautiful weather and no crime or homelessness and jobs aplenty and room for all and yes, all this perfection came with a price, a horrible price they saw every day, everywhere they went, because it hung over the town like a storm cloud, but wasn't it worth it? Wasn't any price worth it?

The Plague District. When the plague descended upon the city an eon ago, it was a disaster. Now it is a hushed undercurrent. It is still there, yes, still prevalent among the residents, but anyone who shows signs is immediately swept up by the Viral Patrols and locked forever behind the heavy, enforced walls of the Plague District. Inside dwells the stuff of nightmares.

The Submarine Port. On this oceanic planet, without any land beyond small atolls and smaller sandbars, steampunk technology rules- and vast, intricate submarines ply the waters like minor gods. They are transports, weapons, homes. They are cities, some of them: vast mobile communities. This great port is where they come to meet, rest, and refit.

The Urban Jungle. This city, with its glorious high-rises and grand avenues, was abandonded to the elements long ago. Now nature has taken back over, making the ghost metropolis over into a verdent jungle of cracked asphalt and old steel and fauna and flora beyond imagining.

I think we should do some eows that are more specific. what I mean is the type of concept art used in strategy games like wc3, for example, for buildings. so it might be like "gnomish gunpowder workshop", "dragon breeding nest", "oil refinery", "fortified bunker", etc. know what I mean? there are a lot of good examples of that type on feng zhu's site, for the work he did for the lotr strategy game and some others.

NANOBOT DISSEMENATION FACILITY

Ok, its 2349 AD, technology has advanced sufficiently that small scale machines, called nanobots, have been developed that can perform a wide variety of tasks, from street cleaning to reparing burst capilliary blood vessels. These bots are typically tiny (definately invisible to the naked eye) but in some cases they can join together to form larger nanobot colonies to perform larger tasks.

Anyhow, nanobots are big business. All of the mega-corporations are involved in nanobot design, manufacture and upkeep. However, one aspect of the nanobot system is how to provide the customers with their bots?

Although in some cases, (for example military-spec assassination and counter terrorist/espionage bots) specialised facilities are required, in general, nanobots are released in their billions from dissemenation facilities.

These facilities pour the nanobots into the atmoshpere, in such a way and over such a time scale that the different types of bots are homogenised so that, in any cubic metre of air, there are all the different types of bots required. The bots are light enough that the force of gravity is far outweighed by the thermal and breeze currents in the air, and so the bots remain airborne.

Customers pay a subscription fee to whatever service they require (for example, a 'fresh breath' service will ensure that a regular supply of nanobots will be servicing the customers teeth at any particular moment). The bots recognize which service the customers have paid for, via microscopic transponders implanted in the customer.

The environment to be designed in this case is one of the dissemenation facilities. These buildings are designed to pump out the nanobots into the surrounding atmosphere. Some nanobot dissementation facilities (NDF) are owned by the factories which produce the nanobots, although this is usually only the case with the largest corporations. Some NDFs rely on many small sized dissemenators spread over a wide area, whereas others simply have one enourmous dissemenator (sometimes reaching many kilometers in height).

Remember, these facilities are designed to release the nanobots as efficiently as possible over a wide area. They also usually feature a collector, which gatheres in nanobots for mainenance, upgrades, or retirement/recycling.

Sorry I went on a bit too much... wanted to provide some background....

A massive, massive library belonging to some ancient, long-dead race of large humanoids. The library is a tall cylinder-shape, with a large machine suspended in the middle. The machine has appendages to select books and bring them to the 'cockpit' where they can be read.

One thing I've always wanted to see is an airship harbor. I have trouble deciding exactly what it would look like. A forest of mooring masts? A series of rooftop platforms? an immense landing field? An airborn city itself? There's a lot of possibilities.

A few EOW's a go there was one called Tunnel City, These were my orignal thoughts on the matter, but I couldn't emphasis the tunnel theme enough. I have thought about it on and off ever since but never put pen to paper. I thought I would post it here.

The ancient wreckage of a giant airship or spacecraft half buried in the gorund of a harsh winter planet. The inside of it was collonised by the survivors an is now a makeshift metropolis. Many years later the survivors are the inhabitants of the planet, making there way & thriving in what ever way they can. They have made use of the indigenous species of the planet useing some for transport, beasts of burden and others for food.

1. show the undesireable conditions of the planet
2. give an impression of the scale of the original craft
3. show the use of the indigenous creatures

4. Avoid as much as possible making it look like Hoth!

ah I wish when you started looking at new topics that you would flip through the list of old ones. the waterfall city has been done...and beautitfully too.
most of these suggestionas are pretty generic.

I try to avoid scenes as in "apocalyotuc battle over fairytale castle" although that would be kinda fun now that I think of it. I have been trying to choose topics that fit into one of two catagories..
1. settings for action to take place. like a stage set...
2. actual scenes from existing stories.

This isn't necessarily a specific topic but it was something that's been rattling around in my head for a while... I'm sure it's been brought up or even attempted before...

As concept artists, we have to remember that the environments we create may one day be turned into an actual 3D environment. We have to be mindful of why the environment exists, who built it and why, how it works, entrances and exits and potential benefits/hazards. If it's not man made, then what created it, or how will someone interact with the environment if they happen across it?

As we complete the EOW challenges, I've noticed that we come up with a lot of amazing images, which is awesome, but not a lot of actual designed environments. I propose for one round that we not only submit a fully rendered image of the environment, but also plans of the complete environment, illustrating the ins and outs of its design and purpose. This would include bird's-eye-views, elevations, architectural details/motifs and (in the case of game level design) danger areas, traps and hazards and entrance/escape routes (navigation).

Could be cool... it would definitely take some time, but it'd also be a learning experience for everyone.

WWII-style Command Complex: A sprawling Napolionic era fortress in South Africa, but modernized by the Dominate of the Drakia with cutting edge 1930s and 40s technology - concrete bunkers dug into the fortress' bedrock, giant radio masts and air field installed within a adjacent chainlink compound, the fortress itself has modern naval guns intalled within it's angular, low set walled keeps. Grey pillboxes line the outer wall, dragon's teeth embed the dry moats, powder houses are serving as modern armouries, Hond tanks trundle around the sandy parade grounds, WarDir officers man the guard blocks, and light Janissary armour patrol the roadways...

Bond Villain Lairs:

* A warehouse, dock yards or office block with a sprawling secret complex built beneath it.

* A small island bought out by a villain's corporation and turned into a elaborate DHARMA/Crab Key style complex, with monorail system installed for transport.

* A flooded volcano crater with a helipad rising out of the lake basin, with the rising helipad's bridge joining up with the tunnel entrance leading into high-tech complex built into the crust of the volcano crater's wall.

* A derelict church refurbished into a villain's high-tech safehouse.

* A mountaintop restort or mansion, with the requisite villain's complex bored into the mountain the legitimate villain's front establishment is built on.

* Alpine castle refurbished into villain's compound.

* Ditto for Edo era Japanese castle, with requisite suicide garden, and monorail system.

Idiran Warship: The interior of a Idiran warship that took part in the Culture-Idiran war - medjel barracks, main corridors, command bridge, effector ports, core chamber for enslaved AI system, Idiran brigs, non-Idiran slave blocks, central shrine, docking bays, private Idiran quaters, and communal Idiran quarters.

I have no idea what you mean by "conceptart vibe" I would think that "concept art" would be the topics with specific briefs which are apparently too difficult for people to come up with creative solutions for. The big generic topics draw the biggest crowd but are the least "concept art" realated. if you were working to make concept art I assume the brief would be specific
as In "I need a mediaval village in day light with four cottages on the left and a well in the the center of a village green"

I try to mix things up so that people can either flex their mental muscles and try new things or something that fits their niche will roll around every couple weeks.

I can't please all the people all the time. In fact I can't please some of the people any of the time apparently. tell you what

whoo, ok.
I didn't want to sound offensive if it appeared that way. I remember we had some mild dispute over the topics in EOW some time ago already...
What I meant with concept art vibe was simply referring to themes that revolve a tiny bit more around concept art as used in films or video games.
Something that is instantly recognizable as 'mainstream' concept art and evokes a strong sense for an environmental setting. It's a little difficult to explain what I mean... For example, looking at the current topic I don't see much relation to concept art. I wouldn't deny that concept art is strongly tied to sci-fi and fantasy because these genres always demand for thorough conceptual ideas and get the imaginative fluids running...
I would diagree on your statement about concept art always being combined with clear-cut descriptions. Shouldn't it be the concept artist who gives substance to an idea? I'd rather think of it in terms of giving personal conceptual finesse to a rather broad topic and interpreting it. Thus, more people would be attracted because there's more room for own development.
Sorry, if some of the above sounded rather gibberish/contradictory but I am a little tired...
I also don't want to discuss this any further, think of me whatever you want... :P
And no, I'd rather not choose the next topic, please go ahead and continue!
I will just try to participate more frequently again and face uncomfortable topics as a challenge! :)

Is EOW actual purpose aimed towards concept art? I always got the impression it was similer to CHOW, basicly to create the best looking image from the given brief. Its sometimes the artists choice or in most cases its the specific brief given to whether its aimed towards concept art, illustration or any other art industry. So therefore I would have thought even the brief right now fits perfectly into EOW, as it is afterall an environment, only difference is this time, its not fantasy, it doesnt have dragons, space ships or any other gimicks to sell your image. Your basicly being asked to produce an environmental image to the best of your ability, which is no different than any other week.

chaosrocks

I understand what you mean
although I think the current topic is great practice for game Environment, I see aloit of games with real world settings, GTO, COD (1-4) all the war games etc. for example. I ,personally think that learning to look at wahts around you will help to draw for these type games. yes theres a lot of SCIFi and Fantasy. And I will get back to that.

I like to believe that any idea Could go into a movie or Game
the sculpture garden could easily have cgone into something Like Pan's labyrinth. and of course the Douglas Adams is a movie. the catherdral of lilith could easily appear in a fantasy game of a rather dark nature... so. I think these topics are still game related. just those games or movies haven't been made yet.... which I do kinda think is the point. If you get a new game... you don;t want it to look just like every other fantasy game at least I wouldn't.
but anyway
I hope you do give it a try Hide.... and we're about due for a couple big generic topics any way

A note about how precise a brief for a concept should be:
Two months ago I had the luck to hear James Clyne speaking in a conference in Turin. Talking about his work for Minority Report he said he had to draw a view of the city with no description as reference. All the script said was "futuristic city in the background". So he had to invent it (and to draw several different proposals).
Sometimes things like "future city" or "medieval castle" sound as commonplaces but if we are requested to draw them we have no choice and we should come out with something original...
Then whatever topic Chaosrox chooses we must/should produce something.

Hideyoshi is a professional, he could tell us how briefs from clients usually are, vague or precise.

Hideyoshi
December 31st, 2007, 03:01 PM
Concept Art and illustration briefs vary from client to client. It always depends on the type of project you're working on.
It's true that a lot of clients ask for your artistic eye and ideas. This is even more so, if the client approached you directly, asking you to work for him. They look at one's portfolio and know what kind of artworks you're most proficient with and generally, they give you quite a lot of artistic freedom then.
Just recently, I decided to go with my gut feeling on a concept that actually had a rough description and the client liked my turn on the subject.

On other gigs, you get a clear cut description as to what kind of elements should be in an illustration/concept, but in the end you still design everything out yourself.
At all times, you're in close contact with the client sending revised WIP shots back and forth asking for feedback.
Clients simply hire artists because they can't visualize concepts/illus themselves. Thus, they hire artists that match the needed general criteria for a job, give rough descriptions while still allowing your personal style to show through. They want your very personal artistic judgement and interpretation, because they chose you and not someone else. :)
Artistic freedom is some of the coolest things in the biz if you ask me!

(sorry, very off topic)

Sorry if these have been suggested before, but here are some things I think we could benefit from:
- A double concept - mood piece of the subject/location, followed by a mock level shot design that takes place in the location. So the second concept would require the game camera to be used, and have more architectural/asset detail. Also indicate how a player moves through this environment.

Rayk's idea is one we've tossed around for a while. I'm sure if you go back through the pages of this thread you'd find dozens of posts of the same topic. The closest we've got to it was the Harbor something-or-other at the beginning of the year (paint a scene and draw a map detailing the layout). Not sure if it's ever been specifically for a "game design".

I'm with Chaos though, not everyone's going to be a game designer, but if you look at it another way, film, television and video games (and yes, even traditional art, for you purists) all have the same principles attached to building an environment. You still have to plan out what it looks like. Maybe every fifth or sixth round could be one of those hyper-detailed challenges where we have two or three objectives over a period of a couple of weeks, not just "paint a pretty picture" every time.

I don't know if any of these have been suggested, but... once more won't hurt :P

- Lord of the Rings-type moody landscape
- The beginning of the Earth, before most life forms existed, like just some sort of landscape with creative structures. It'd be cool to have 2 parts of it as well: 1 part before and 1 part of what it might look like now.
- Underwater base
- Colossal structure over an area. A ship, wall, base, etc.
- A city mixed of oldern-style buildings and sci-fi ones.

I think it'd be kind of fun to be given one stock image, and our job to come up with the best environment from it. The stock should be something completely random(chair, light structure, pile of junk, etc... just not a landscape) and full of color.

You know, I wanna paint this stuff now. :D

A planet - compressed gas-giant externally, with an interior space that is similar to Earth, yet more hilly, strange creatures and a beautiful tower where the pregnant woman Dajeil Gaelian lives; she can see the sky, but she has cameras that let her see the gas-giant, sky, land and water creatures. Maybe a two-part - paint the tower and its surroundings, and then the interior of the tower in her living space, which somehow displays all the different environments outside.

another idea I had was,

Ideal Future or not so Ideal Future ; not too distant, maybe year 2100 a.d.

Could make it more exciting by making it New Years eve 2100 I think it's year of the monkey if anyone was wondering. Thoughts to ponder would be how do people get around in the future, what's changed ? has climate change been halted and earth is recovering, or has extinction and disease gone rampant ? population dwindle due to food and water how does this effect how people live in the future, is travel between relatives common from moon to earth, have space elevators been installed in every major city, does every large factory / company have it's own space elevator ? has sattelite use been so excessive that space travel from earth is dangerous or non plausible, how can this be shown in a single image. What contemporary technology has been abandoned or banned in the future ? do people get around using pipes like super mario ? could go anywhere.

but as the winners thread is being updated I really want more recognition for the people who do such amazing work.

so any of you who might be inspired to make an EOW icon..Im taking submissions

Also I m planning to start offering the winners the option of choosing the next topic. only choosing them myself in default. So if you really want controll over the topics? GET ttto work! hehehe

how about a series of topics, something to help my Third Earth sketchbook. Maybe reflect into the other weekly design challenges. :) Consider this:

1000 years into the future, far beyond technology and what we know as the vision of the future to a world as a endless landscape of buildings. The society is harmonious of art, science, and religion. In their technology, a fluid biomechanica hybrid of both cybornetic sentinence and a living, breathing organism.

However, after a apocolyptic asteroid event drives out 95% of the world's population to escape to the stars, leaving behind others to fend for themselves in the aftermath.

Time passes, almost 3000 years since the disaster.

The ones who left for the stars, The Journeymen (now, some hyper-advanced hybrid of fluid machine and bioorganism. More or less human a result of living in space and alien breeding with various advance humaniod alien cultures) return to Earth, after hundreds of years of searching for their vestigial home. Upon landing, they find the distant descendants of the survivors, a culture of technologically inclined primatives in a vast, lush jungle planet (Earth undergone a climate hyper-restoration from the greenhouse gases. The planet's landmasses are 80% covered in thick woodlands, wild jungles, or dark forests of immense trees of at least 100 feet. The animals have balloned in size, almost 100 fold their present sizes. Imagine a spotted salamander a 100 feet long!)

The primatives discover one Journeyman sent on a mission of discovery and peace. The Journeyman (for the story's purpose, I'll name Anuk.) is taken into the cultures of various clans around whats left of the world: North America's wastelands; the myst-shrouded ruins of Asia; etc...

He takes sketches in his digital log to take back interpretative accounts from the planet before he is to return to the stars.

So, yes, think a bit future anachronism: hover sailcraft, propelled by a thrust vector but steered by a animal hide sail (IDW idea?). Tribal clansmen herding immense reptiles and mammals to power huge convoys in the dense of the jungles (CDW / CHOW)...

Well i hope this starts some ideas...:D

I love the Unreal games and the Concept Art is amazing. I tried talking to John Wallin, one of the artists, and asked where he got his inspiration for the detailed "machinery-like" maps, but I didn't get a response. Robmorfin... Here's some great examples of the equipment that's used to stimulate the natural gas wells (which is what I get to take part in.. I'm an electronic technician in the field)
This is an example of fracturing earth's rock formations to stimulate oil and gas.. for it to flow back up to the surface of the well.
If you take a look.. the well is at the top of the image and the trailers to the left and right are 2400hp engines that energize large plungers to pump water, sand, and various chemicals into the rock formations underground at around 5,000 g/min. Probably more than you want to know but it's pretty cool. The water is sucked from large water tanks or ponds and mixed with the additives from the unit aka a Blender. Which is at the bottom center of the image.
