what would your perpect/ideal place for work be? maybe a spot atop a cloud, and a chamber under the sea? would you desire hundreds of monitor all around you to feed you ideas, or a simple canvas and a chair in the middle of the desert do the trick?
would be kind of fun to add yourself to the picture too :D

how about a high-level prison facility on the most uninhabitable locations (on an asteroid, an island, a vulcanic environment, underwater, ...) Just to make sure than chances of survival after a possible escape are minimal.
And make it possible that some sections of the prison can be seen from the outside world, but not everything. So small sections coming out of the rock, like landing platforms, security checkpoints, etc.
Or have mining facilities outside the prison where convicts are working, and you can see transporting systems, conveyer belts, container terminals, and many more between the prison and the labor camps.

We can make the beaces of Normandy during D-DAY
You could draw from 2 perspectives. From the eyes of the defenders and from the eyes of the attackers.
Defenders: you can see and entire armada of naval vessels on the background, bombers and fighters in the air, landingschips coming closer to the shores, and even some of the coastal defences.
Attackers: Huge cliffs, bunkers, mine fields, barbed wire, cannons, machinegun nests, mortar pits, trenches, and many mire.
Let your imagination work and draw :lifedrawing:

The Beast's Prison: Hidden in a remote mountain range lies a fortress that has, for centuries, guarded to beasts of the old world. The beasts are immortal and are unkillable by known methods, but are far too dangerous and hostile to humankind to have roam the world, free. For centuries generations of guards have lived their lives guarding the beasts from childhood to their deaths.
The Dreamwood: The forest between an ethereal world of the subconscious and the real world. In these woods it is hard to tell which is which.
New Mecca: During the colonization period after interstellar travel was made viable, new religions and cults cropped up all over the galaxy. The mystery and adventure of the final frontier made people easy believers in what anyone with enough charisma would say to them. On the remote colony on planet Horus, travellers stumbled across a massive alien ruin, which a religious leader claimed a sign from the heavens and 'New Mecca' and became a sacred site for their religion. Pilgrims flocked to 'New Mecca' to see this sacred site.

Gringotts
yes, good Idea,
for those who dont know what that is ...
Gringotts Wizarding Bank
Gringotts is the only known bank of the wizarding world and it is operated primarily by goblins. A snowy white building, near the intersection of Knockturn Alley and Diagon Alley, Gringotts towers over all neighbouring shops. Customers pass through a set of bronze doors and then silver ones before entering the lobby. The main floor is paved with marble and has long counters stretching along its length. Within, wizards and witches keep their money and other valuables in vaults that are protected by very complex and strong security measures. The vaults extend for miles under London and are accessible through rough stone passageways and then by means of magic carts that travel speedily along their tracks.[PS Ch.5] Gringotts also offers Muggle-Wizarding currency exchange.[CS Ch.4]
When Harry first visits Gringotts, he is told by Hagrid that one would have to be mad to try to rob Gringotts.[PS Ch.5] Goblins are extremely greedy and will protect their money and valuables at any cost, which makes them ideal guardians for the valuables of the wizarding world. In addition, according to Hagrid, apart from Hogwarts, Gringotts is considered "the safest place in the world for anything you want to keep safe".[23] There are a number of methods to opening the vaults. Most vaults, such as Harry's, use small golden keys. Higher security vaults may have various enchantments upon the doors. For example, the door to Vault 713[24] needs to be stroked by a certified Gringotts goblin, which causes the locks to retract to the centre of the door. If anyone but a Gringotts goblin touches the door, the person will be sucked into the vault, which is checked for trapped thieves about once every 10 years. Dragons guard the especially high security vaults found in the lowest reaches of the bank.
Gringotts Vault 713 held a small parcel wrapped in paper, inside of which was the Philosopher's Stone. Dumbledore sent Hagrid to retrieve it while he escorted Harry.[PS Ch.5] Later that very same day, Professor Quirrell broke into the vault under orders of Voldemort. Although he was unsuccessful in obtaining the Philosopher's Stone, the break-in shocked the wizarding world because it was practically unheard of for Gringotts to be robbed. The culprit was not caught. In Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, aided by a reluctant Griphook, break into the vault of Bellatrix Lestrange where a Horcrux of Voldemort (Hufflepuff's cup) is hidden. However, when they go into Bellatrix's vault, which is stocked with all manners of treasure, they find out that the treasure has had Gemino and Flagrante charms placed on it, which, respectively, cause any item to multiply rapidly and go red-hot whenever it is touched. The trio escape with the Horcrux by freeing a half-blind dragon that was part of the security for the vault, and clambering onto its back. The trio inside the vault and the subsequent escape by dragon are illustrated in the U.K. Edition, the U.S. deluxe edition and on the cover of the Dutch translation of the book.
While Gringotts is largely staffed by goblins, including Griphook and Ragnok, it is known that the bank does employ humans, though not apparently for banking and accounting services. Bill Weasley worked as a curse-breaker for Gringotts in Egypt, retrieving artefacts from ancient Egyptian tombs and pyramids.[25] Fleur Delacour took a part-time job with Gringotts after participating in the Triwizard Tournament, apparently to improve her English skills, and Wizard guards are mentioned in Deathly Hallows during the break in.

I was recently looking for images of a fantasy city-ship, based on an idea in an old book I'd read -- the idea was the ship was the home of a band of sea-gypsies who never settle on land, but build their tiny residences in and on these massive ships that get bigger with each generation.
I was baffled when I couldn't find any good images of some such online. Apparently, that ground's never been heavily trod. Might make for some interesting images! Could see slightly different takes from either a primitive or renaissance model, but my imagination's rusty.

A huge city within an extinct volcano , or inside a huge canyon with buildings along the steep walls, and many cranes, lifts, cables and bridges hanging around it.
On the lower levels you see the mining area with its foundries, mines, excavation sites, transportation belts, containerstations etc.
The next level you see the houses and government buildings.
The level above this the high temple and military structures.
And on the highest level the port, from which they trade the many mined metals and minerals, and an entire beacon system to communicate with the outside level.

Ok I looked through a lot of the pages but not all of them, there are just too many ideas to read - so I hope I don't post up an already done or posted idea, but here goes.
Starcraft!!: A painting of either a zerg, terran, or protoss colony, most concept art you see of the starcraft universe is depicting some kind of war-front imagery, but how about on their respective home worlds, colonies that aren't currently in combat? How would they look? Possibly interesting..
Alternate Earth!: A painting of any well known place on our planet, but with obvious and subtle changes to it, due to being in a slightly different, alternate universe! Still enough the same that it is recognizable however. For example; a scene of the pyramids and sphinx, but with a city around it instead of deserted, or new york city with the statue of liberty in an entirely different pose lol, something along those lines, any well known scene.
Those are my best ideas. I like the idea of a sound-track based EOW as well, although I think it might lead to a real lack of consistency and make it a little harder to judge, but that isn't that big of a deal.

Then we could do a mattepainting. I haven't done this but I think it couldn't be so tricky with an alfa-chanel or something. And optional make a still image.

It's based on Buzz ALdrin's words : "magnificent desolation".
Anyone could make his own interpretation of this expression, but would have to create a small description of the universe created.

I was thinking it would be fun to design environments based on D&D's famous party-killing adventures; namely, The Tomb of Horrors and The Temple of Elemental Evil. There are existing maps of the layout of each setting, so it would be interesting to see the artists interpret the information given into their personal style.

Greek fire factory!
Think about it- We still don't know how it was made. This leaves tons of room to play- have scientists rediscovered the recipe to use in times of war? Or are you depicting the factory of ancient times? I've also heard that small factories were set up on ships for making it. Greek fire was used by many cultures, and you can let your architecture speak as to which you're representing. This has the added bonus of most likely being an interior scene. :D

Gummy bear paradise, Or Unicorn Palace would both be wonderful as well! Gummy bear paradise would be fun, it would give a chance to play around with semi-translucent items. Unicorn palace would be fun to design a palace for creatures with different dimensions than humans.
Crystal would also be fun to play with, Crystal Waterfalls could be awesome as well... :)

Hi, this is the first time for my suggestion here, may we have an EoW about my home town, Ho Chi Minh city, in the future? May be in the 25th century.
My city is in a great development, mixing between modern, many new technology, and the traditional values: architecture, culture. If there's any occasion, you may come here, take a look at my country, I think you will find many inspiration for your design, I did too. If you don't, Google is would be good too.
Obviously, as a Vietnamese concept artist, I'd love to see what my home town city will become in the next 500 years, that will be very interesting, through the eyes, the hands, of many talent artists here and there.
Thanks a lot, guys :D

How about a Climbing City?! Where, instead of walking around, driving, or flying little ships, the inhabitants (whether human, alien, or creaturish) got around places by climbing to them. This would open up interesting, new, dimensions to the spatial conception of a city. The idea would be that because of geography, security (look up Meteora, Greece! - or various monasteries in the mountains), or the lack of space (pop density), the city began expanding vertically (or even upside-down), and people began climbing from day to day to get to their jobs, school, parks... etc. Think about it! Would the inhabitants need safety equipment or would they just all become bada$$es? Or maybe it is an alien world and the creatures prefer climbing over anything else!!!
Cheers,

Im paraphrasing but... blurry high altitude U2 photos of something in a giant concrete sacophagus at the end of a canal in the urals, something that the nazis scraped out of what looked like a giant ruined templed on the floor of the Baltic... mayan step pyaramids made of east german concrete, surrounded by slave labour camps... another pyramid constructed by Saddam deep in the desert... another ruined temple on the floor of Lake Vostok in Antarctica, with alien sunlight and impossibly ancient animals swimming through its eye-bending doorways... shoggoths on trucks paraded through Red Square... and the thing in the lead and gold lined sarcophagus, undead and sleeping till the war turns hot.....

since I need to get into the enviro groove, I'll start by suggesting some interesting things that have come to mind, any suggestions that have already been used are purley un-intentional...
-Colony of Space Vessels (people (or aliens) live on a large fleet of ships instead of on a planet or celestial body)
-Post-Apocalyptic Prison in the Rain (pretty self explanatory)
-Lava fields (perhaps a battlefield, or a path to take you to some hard to reach destination, or just a large field with lots of molten magma everywhere)
-The Bottomless Pit (or the room that houses the mythical bottomless pit, perhaps it is for sacrificial purposes, or a test of nerves, or just a large garbage chute)
-The Fall of Isengard or The Treasure of Lonely Mountain (or some kind of tolkein inspired enviro)

Some ideas that I had today..
+ Alien Cathedral: What if you visit an alien civilization and your first stop is their place of worship, what would their church look like? Their alien religion would inspire the architecture, mood, etc..
+ Spooky Graveyard for Villains: a place where they bury very, very bad people.
+ Nightmarish Toy Factory: Halloween is coming up :D

I agree with OchreHand's comment about Halloween, so why not a halloween themed round this time !
- Sleepy Hollow, 2 minutes before midnight.

Or something else;

Hmm, I didn't really have any one thing in mind. I think the ambiguity of it is what makes it a fun prompt. Maybe some version of heaven or an all-white city, or a shiny portal (though I guess that'd be "portal to the light?"), or a view of a majestic sky with a fiercely glowing sun.. or a building/tree just standing in sunlight, for that matter, contrasted by the ominous shadows all around them.
sorry if a prompt like this has already been done. I didn't check the archives. >>"

When i was a kid i read a story about a princess lost in a forest. She found a little lake, with flowers and light. She was so scared she didn't dare going back into the forest, so she sat down by the water. She sat unmoving so long she became a flower herself.

I have a couple:
- The hidden upside down city.
- The carnivorous island. This one's from the book, "Life of Pi." The island was made of a huge mass of vines that produced freshwater, and killed the fish that landed it. During the night, too, the vines produced acid and you couldn't sleep on it. The main character Pi later found a huge tree that produced fruit, and in the fruit he found body parts, like teeth and hair. You don't have to do this specific carnivorous island, per say, but a carnivorous island is still a cool concept.

Well, this is an idea suggestion, but not for a topic. I just tried my first ever few enviro's and im somewhat discouraged by the results. I looked for tutorials and whatever on the net. I found a few but for practise all they can do is suggest landscapes from ref and speedpaints. I wqnt to try and go ahead and practice those, but what i really miss is a place to post and discuss these with others. So, what I would really like is a feedback weekly activity thing, a bit like spartan camp, but with enviro's.
:D any chance of getting that?

I can also host something like that but wouldn't really know where to start. Is there someone in the EOW ranks who'd like to volunteer for something like this? Someone more involved in the industry who knows what areas need the most practice, like the mentor program on CA.org but more targetted towards the environmental aspect of art. I haven't been in that section much on this site but I'll check it out and get back to you through PM. As of right now, I'm sticking to just the EOW activity but I'd be more than happy to advertise it every time a new topic goes up if you guys wanted to start your own spartan camps for improving your enviros.

I had an idea today for this that I really wanted to see, stemming from this quote:
"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C. Clarke
I want to see an interpretation of a civilization, human or not, where this has become the case, where the technology is so advanced that it looks like magic by our standards of understanding of technology. This is a topic approachable from both a sci-fi and high-fantasy perspective.
I'd title this in two words "Fantastical future."

Greebly world.
Greebles are leftovers of technology. The forgotten bits that fall out of your stereo when you play it to loud. Make a town, mini city under the bed, planet or whatever location, just make it out of leftover tech.
